“If the Fates Allow” ~ David Archuleta and the MOTAB

Posted by SandyBeaches on Thursday, December 16, 2010

Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus
Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our death

Amen

Ever peaceful, ever beautiful, Ave Maria the song “prayer” is one of the most spiritual and uplifting songs known to mankind. The history of the beginnings of the hymn starts with two biblical passages which were joined together as far back as the fourth or fifth centuries. The hymn is admired by twelve religions and sung in several different languages. Ave Maria was composed in about 1825 by Franz Schubert when he was twenty-eight years old. The words used with Schubert’s music are not the words that the composer originally set to music. Franz Schubert actually wrote the music for an excerpt from the poem “The Lady of the Lake” by Sir Walter Scott. In this particular excerpt from the poem, the heroine is in hiding in a mountain cave with her father, while she prays to the Virgin Mary. A letter from Schubert to his father refers to his music Ave Maria: “My newest song from Scott’s Lady of the Lake especially had much success. They also wondered greatly at my piety, which I expressed in a hymn to the Holy Virgin and which it appears, grips every soul and turns it to devotion”. The original words by Sir Walter Scott include references to the Latin “Ave Maria” prayer. The Latin words of Ave Maria prayer (Hail Mary) is most commonly performed with the music of Schubert.
The well known, Emmy award winning composer Kurt Bestor from Utah, arranged and produced Ave Maria for David. David was demanding of himself and spent several hours working on the piece, striving for perfection. As Mr. Bestor stated about David, “He’s not happy unless it’s right”. The city of Prague Philharmonic orchestra recorded the strings, conducted by Mr. Bestor for Ave Maria.
One of my favourite videos of David singing Ave Maria took place in Salt Lake City on the second evening of the concert tour. The most profound moments of devotion that captured my heart, takes place within the song at the 3:47 to 4:12 mark. These are the moments in his song that show us the depth of his musicality and then the magnificence of his voice.

When we saw David on his Christmas tour in Providence in 2009, my VIP ticket number was drawn, giving me the chance to ask David a question. I talked it over with friends and we thought that I should ask him to sing a little of Ave Maria. I wondered if it was asking a lot but I went ahead and presented my request. After thinking for a moment David said to me, “Sure, ok”.  After preparing it in his mind he started to sing my most favorite Christmas hymn, but then he was told that perhaps he should not continue and understandably so. But he did sing these two symbolic words, “Ave Maria (Hail Mary)”.

Admin. addendum:  This video was posted on YouTube December 2, 2010 of a recent performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  It is the glorious Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.  Imagine the “Voice” in the video above backed up by this magnificent choir.
