David Archuleta Packs His Bag

Posted by Abrra on Thursday, December 9, 2010

An interesting book title crossed my email the other day, “Repacking Your Bags: Lighten Your Load for the Rest of Your Life .”

One review by Peter Senge, author of “The Fifth Discipline” on Amazon said “Repacking Your Bags will help you figure out where you want to go in your life and what you really need for the journey.”  I didn’t need to read the book to find the idea fascinating .

As you can see from this graphic, much of what David shared were practical items he carried with him when he traveled.  Note the dozen Sharpies?  Like any good Eagle Scout, he wanted to be prepared for any fan encounter that would require an autograph.  I have wondered about what we can’t see, but must surely be inside his “backpack for living,” not in the physical sense but metaphorically.

At the beginning of Idol his canvas backpack was relatively empty.  A few sentimental reminders of home and of a friend who gave him a flattened milk carton.  Typical of a teenager who wants to hold tight to memories of high school, no matter how strange it may seem.  He packs a personal journal to ensure he keeps track of daily events to measure his progress.  Little did he know how important this journal would mean to his future.  It was just the right inspiration for his best-selling book, “Chords of Strength.”  Perhaps he also took along a few unfinished melodies to comfort him and work on whenever the spirit or muse moved him.

With long stretches away from home and his family and friends, the bag became a bit lighter in some ways.  His metaphorical backpack began to evolve; the meaning of its contents becoming more precious than the tangibles.  Some high school chums had gone away for two years but not forgotten.  He will see them when he can, when they return from their mission or perhaps in photographs they send from college or when they come to his concerts.  Another reduction came as he had to put education on hold.  That can be achieved over time and when the time is right.  In fact, just recently a radio DJ reported that David said he was doing studies again.

As time progressed his backpack took on new weight.  He was now the boss.  Hiring a new management team was a solid move forward into his future.  I can only imagine the weight on a young man’s shoulders who is responsible for the livelihood of band mates and a host of others involved with a national concert tour.

Looking ahead to more appearances and touring to promote his new CD, The Other Side of Down, the responsibilities and commitments he carries around on a daily basis will become greater in scope and number.  David may need to pack a few extra items to guide him along this journey.  I envisioned a few new items that he may find useful to help him move forward in his career.

What might be in David’s metaphorical backpack?  I gave it some thought!

Last Summer in Greenville, South Carolina, a fan gave him a ring engraved with the letters CTR.  The initials stand for Choose The Right.  It’s a Mormon tradition to give this ring so that youth will always think before they act in any situation.  Maintaining the courage of his personal convictions will be tested in a business where young talent can be lead down the wrong path.  David understands that being in the limelight places him in the position of a role model.  He is more than worthy of this honor.  His recipe for happiness is, “What can I do to make others happy?”  Will he be packing a few extra rings to give guidance to those who are in need of support to always Choose The Right?

A dream catcher is always handy.  David says the lyrics to his new song, “Elevator,” came to him in a dream.  But a dream catcher may be useful for more than songwriting.  He once said that his ultimate dream is to sing at the Olympics.  A dream of a lifetime!  Oh to witness him in a stadium with the world watching and hearing the power of  the Voice!  In the process of promoting, touring and participating in charity events, David has gained valuable exposure.  His hard work does get him noticed.  I am confident that one day he WILL sing at the Olympics!

Having a spiritual anchor tucked away inside the bag keeps David grounded.  He can access the warmth of his family no matter where he is.  Knowing that collectively and individually they are a soft place to fall when he has concerns, eases the loneliness of traveling.  Being on the road so much can blow David in so many directions as he crisscrosses the country.  Family love and his strong faith in God keeps him firm and anchors him from a possible shipwreck.  At a time when many young people are “all sail and no anchor,” David stays the steady course, with a strong sense of duty and a confident eye on the future.

The invisible contents in David’s “backpack for living” are just as noteworthy as the more tangible items inside.  If David were to actually share the contents of his real backpack for living, it would reveal how far he’s come in a very short time.  It would also make known some life lessons about loyalty, responsibility, commitment and courage.  Lessons we would all do well to pack in our own bags as we navigate through life.

Abrra, very thoughtful and insightful article. I really enjoyed it. It’s really interesting to think of what he carries and the meaning of it all.

This line in particular struck me: “Knowing that collectively and individually they are a soft place to fall when he has concerns, eases the loneliness of traveling>” I’ve often thought of how lonely he must get some days. When he is travelling is when he seems to like to make blogs, or have his little twitter parties. I like to think he sees his fans as an extension of his family/friends when on the road and feeling alone. (And, I do think he reads the blogs sometimes, when he is bored and the time differences make it hard to be in contact with his family, or when his ego may need a little boost. And I mean that in the nicest way.) I like to think that we, in some way, can provide a little comfort for him in times like those.

Thank you for this article. I was thinking David must be keeping his bag packed now. He gets up and goes to work almost daily. I appreciate how dedicated he is in his efforts to make a difference.
My eye was drawn to #4 Personal Journal where he says he made a resolution to write in his journal once a week, but then adds that he writes daily. Overachieving again.

    Abrra,

I like the way you packed his bags. Making right choices (CTR), holding fast to his dreams (dream catcher), and keeping a firm foundation of support (anchor, spiritual/family). Nice use of symbolism. You’ve included all the stuff that really matters to keep our David on course as he continues his journery. I say our David…he is ours, isn’t he? Can we keep him. lol. Love this. Love you. 😉

Bringing this over from the last thread. It was posted late last night. Kaycee, my heart and prayers are with you and your lovely daughter. So glad David’s music gave her spirit a lift. (((hugs))) to you both.

Wow! I think it’s been almost a month since I’ve been able to check out videos of David or even get on this site. My teenage daughter (and fellow concert-goer) became very ill about a month ago and after weeks of great discomfort, hospitalizations, and stumping doctors was diagnosed with a very rare and serious disorder. She has just started a very aggressive chemotherapy and steroid treatment, and we are hoping for the best. Her spirits were quite low today, so we went out driving, and she turned to me with such sad eyes and said, “I just want to listen to David.” So we stuck in TOSOD and then CFTH, and the heaviness seemed to lift and the sadness seemed to fade.

    Another skating video credit davidfankimbee

An in depth recap of Kaleidoscope by Kurt. Here are some excerpts, full recap at link.

Dorothy Hamill then came out to introduce Paul Wylie skating to David Archuleta performing “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” I will admit, I’ve never watched American Idol so while I knew who David Archuleta is by name, I’ve never really heard him sing before. I was pretty impressed – he’s got a beautiful voice and tone which filled the arena with warmth.

Both David’s were given the opportunity to perform a song without a skater on the ice, and David Archuleta’s song was next. Scott talked about how he was now a bona fide star with web sites, fan clubs, bestselling albums, and a 20th birthday coming up really soon. David sang “Falling Stars”, which was absolutely gorgeous and heartfelt. His voice just filled the arena, and he can definitely emote while singing.

David Archuleta was noticeably more comfortable on the ice, even trying a little 360 degree turn at one point, and skating unassisted around waving at the audience with the other skaters.

Thank you for reading this article. Backpacks can come in many intangible forms. I think we repack our hopes and dreams on a daily basis. Life kinda dictates and we adjust. I like that!

The skating video’s are so sweet. I had to laugh out loud when David had to join the chain of hands beside the bright pink bikini. He does not have a sharpie big enough to fill in the flesh! ( shades of Angelica in her boots?). Don’t they know his hand holding standard? 😉

    Val’s pictures are amazingly good.

Good news! Boston has Orla’s concert on now! After telling me they would not carry it. Orla is there to promote the DVD.

First thing she says is that David is making her COOL!

And the interviewer says ( I swear , learn your facts woman! ) “But he’s ITALIAN, right?” 😉

Oh my heck! She seemed surprised that a Irish lady and an “eye-talian” ( /sarcasm off) could sing beautiful songs together.

Abrra, your article is very thought provoking and insightful. You talked about how lonely he must get at times, for his friends and family. I was thinking today about how much his Mother must miss him. I remember when my first son went off to college, and then my second son joined the Army and went to Germany. I missed both of them so much at times I actually ached. His Mother had to give him up, so to speak, when he was only 17. He’s been gone so much of the time since then, and I’m sure she misses him dearly. I know I would.

Kaycee, I am praying for your daughter and hope that God will bless you both this Christmas.

Abrra, Finally someone wrote a beautiful story about David’s backpack! It is like he packs everything meaningful to him in his life into that bag and carries them on his slender shoulder whenever he goes. What’s in the bag reminds him where he had come from and guides him where he is going. As he travels, he literally feels the love on his back from the things given to him by family, friends and fans — every step of the way.

These were the thoughts that went through my mind when I snapped the picture above (the one with him in the blue shirt carrying his backpack). When he got up from the autograph table and getting ready to leave the M&G, he immediately reached for his raggedy backpack and I quickly grabbed my camera. I am glad I did…

I really think he should wear that every time he sings his Christmas songs on the upcoming tour, like he did with the suit last year, Or, he could just wear it every single day. Someone call him and suggest it, okay? 😀

69 Suzy-Q.I’m with you! Thank you sooo much! This is such a gift!

David gave such an amazing performance in Denver.I don’t know what came over me tonite, but watching these performances,I have just had tears running down my face. The beauty of Davids voice just overwhelmed me, and at the same time, the people who talked incessantly through his performance made me crazy, and upset me.Someone who puts on a performance like David just gave these people deserves an attentive audience. I’m sorry, but it just went all over me.

“Will he be packing a few extra rings to give guidance to those who are in need of support to always Choose The Right?” Abrra

I should have added that during the VIP at the Demi concert, I gave David 30 CTR children’s rings. They only cost a couple of dollars and they are adjustable. I wrote him a note that told him if he wanted to give these out to the children at hospitals etc. that I would appreciate it. I thought that it would mean so much coming from him. I don’t know what happened because I didn’t give him my address but now I am thinking that when I see him at the book signing in SLC, I would give him more. They sell them at the Deseret Book Store.

That sounds like a plan. The rings serve as a reminder to think through a situation before moving forward. People can be impulsive at the worst times it seems.

Be sure you include your mailing address and a note telling him you’d like to know how he gave them away. His reply would be interesting, I bet!

Abrra, just went back to re-read as FG mentioned. It’s such a fascinating article in so many ways. I agree with so much that you said. That backpack is a reminder of who he was, where he came from, what’s important, and helps to keep him grounded. It’s a little piece of home. I agree also that the intangable contents, such as responsibility, can become much heavier than the actual physical backpack. And I, too, love that he still carries all those friendship bracelets to remind him of all the different kinds of relationships he has with so many people everywhere. I also wonder if the fact that the backpack physically sits on his back is good reminder of all those that “have his back.” I hope so.

I also want to say to ALL of you here, thank you. When I want a gorgeous photo of David to drool over, I know where to come. Gahhhh!! Isn’t he just beautiful!

FIONA – your pictures are so… they leave me speechless. I may just have to borrow from FG: YA-YA fer sure!

ABRRA – David’s bag was out of site when he was in Manila. Probably because he really didn’t go anywhere. People went to his room to see him. So the only time he went out was to go to Skydome and to leave for the airport. And in both cases, he had lots of people taking care of him and his personal stuff

    From Snarkies–

Important information for anyone going to the CD signing at Deseret Books after Friday’s MoTab:

“Singer-songwriter David Archuleta will sign copies of his album, The Other Side of Down, immediately following his performance at the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s Christmas Concert on Friday, Dec. 17.

    =====================================================
Due to the demands of Mr. Archuleta’s schedule, he will only be able to sign for a limited time that evening. He will start signing at approximately 9:30 p.m. and is scheduled to sign until 11 p.m.
    =====================================================

    – One product signed per person
    – No memorabilia
    – No posed photographs with Mr. Archuleta. There will be a designated area to take a photo after leaving the signing line.
    – No personalization. Unfortunately Mr. Archuleta only has time to sign his name.

The line will form at the store’s northeast entrance.

Archuleta rose to instant stardom when, at the age of 16, he became one of the youngest contestants on the seventh season of American Idol. In May 2008 he finished in second place, receiving over 44 million votes. He has since gone on to release a successful Gold-selling pop album, a Christmas album and a New York Times bestselling memoir, and on 5 October released a brand new pop album.

    Friday, December 17, 9:30-11:00 p.m.

    Downtown Deseret Book
45 W. South Temple (Across the street from Temple Square)
    Salt Lake City, Utah

Off- Topic- I was wondering if someone would please send a link to David’s mentor’s gala performances & make an MP3 Of “Nothing Else Better To Do”. I wold buy the Japanese CD, but, I really can’t afford to after buying 3 copies already.

I LOVE this article; and the fact that David makes the choice to make these things so evidently important to him! His family can be sure he misses them too.

He is hardly ever with out his bag. It’s his life line in a few ways, I am guessing 🙂

To copy that song is piracy. David worked so hard for his songs, we must respect that.

The mp3’s posted on this site are of live performances that come from youtube audio.
