Love and Blood ~ CB’s Night at the Mentors
Posted by accord15 on Friday, October 15, 2010
I was lucky enough to get to go to the Mentors charity event the other night. It was wonderful of course! It was semi formal so we all dressed up and that made it kind of exciting too. When we arrived I learned that some of the fans had gotten there early and had been allowed into David’s sound check!!! (Note to self, show up early. LOL) They saw him dancing but weren’t sure if he would actually dance for the program. (I was thinking, “Kill me now, I could have seen David actually Latin dancing!”) Also he was asking his mom and fans about which songs he should sing. Should he sing “Things Are Gonna Get Better?” They (Jonerz) told him yes, to sing it. (Duhh David, and thank you, Joni, and whoever else said to sing it!) TAGGB is a PERFECT charity event song. The dancing information certainly heightened the anticipation! Would David dance with his mom or not????
We all had name tags and assigned tables, and soon the doors opened, and we were allowed in. Our table was far to the right, but on either side of the center of the stage were large screens, so we knew we would be able to see David. At each place setting was a card with a story of one of the people Mentors had helped to start a business and a carved gourd ornament on a string (which will be on my Christmas tree from now on) produced by a small enterprise fostered by Mentors International in Chile. This was the largest order they had ever received. We were served a gourmet dinner starting with salad, then steak wrapped in a crust, kind of like mini beef wellington, and a delicious pumpkin cheesecake with raspberry sauce for dessert. I was sitting with some very lovely fans of David and the excitement you could feel during dinner, waiting for David, was palpable. Oh what fun this David experience always is!
Dinner finally ended and we were ready for David! But no, there were talks and awards to be given. Surprisingly, despite the anticipation for David to come out, I really enjoyed the presentation. We were told about Mentors International and shown pictures of the people that are being helped. The goal is to help them help themselves. Mentors helps the people start and run small banks, which give the people small loans to help them get started, and teaches them skills they need. There is an amazing 96% payback rate on these loans! When David came out he had them put up slides of people he knew from his trip. He loved these people and called them by name as he talked about how little these people had compared to what we are used to, yet how kind, loving, hardworking, and optimistic they are, and how willing they were to share what little they had. He talked about a smiling lady in one picture that sewed purses to support her family. He had his mother hold up the purse she had given Lupe, and told how long it took this lady to make each purse, and that she just wanted to give it to his mom. You could tell David was deeply affected and moved by this trip and these people. David spoke well and eloquently before his songs. He was truly inspirational.
When they were showing a slide show with David, one of the mentor people talked about David, and said David brought hope, and light, and joy, to these people. I liked how they used the word “light” since David seems to just exude light. We, his fans, all know he “glows.” I was impressed with this organization that David supports, and I will continue to support it in any small way I can. None of the money you donate goes to administrative costs. It goes to the people. One point a speaker made is, that instead of giving money you don’t have, just give up something each day that you do have. Give up buying a coke a day and that dollar can support a family for a day. I can do that. 🙂
Time for David! “Angels!” You all know what David sang by now. He was incredible and I think that he put a little extra into his songs because this charity is so very real to him. He did this performance for free. He feels such a connection to these people. As he says, it is his blood.
David sang, Lupe sang, then an epic duet, “A Puro Doror” with David doing incredible runs, howls, hunkerdowns, AND LATIN DANCING!!!! David has some moves! It is in your blood David, and won’t be denied. Ha! (Thank you Lupe!) Oh yeah, the camera man was driving me NUTS! He would show just Lupe while David was dancing or David from the just waist up! What was he thinking??? Come on cameraman! Full length shots of this epic moment PLEASE!!! We just need to watch every second of David dancing. LOL
Another moment I loved was when David introduced a very special person in his life, his mother Lupe Archuleta and the look of love he had on his face. David truly loves his mom.
I hope you all hear “Contigo En La Distancia” live someday. It is just heartbreakingly beautiful. I thought life couldn’t get much better at that point.
I heard some comments about how sparkly David’s eyes are! I think it was because of the emotion he felt so strongly on this evening. Before the last song in particular, I could see his eyes well up with tears as he spoke one last time, of his feelings for these people and this cause. He is such a loving, tenderhearted person. I have to say, I could see a few teary eyes at my table too. For his final number he sang “Dream Sky High.” We have all heard a young David sing this song, but a now more mature David took it to a whole new level! It was one of those performances where he just laid his heart and soul right out there for you. I got chills, had tears in my eyes, and my heart was filled. His ability to communicate the feelings he feels is like nothing I have ever experienced. There is simply no one like him. This David Archuleta guy is one incredible human being!!!
A funny thing happened the next day when I was telling my husband about the evening. I had told him I was going to a charity event that David was singing at on the 8th. I started telling him about Mentors International and their purpose and what a great charity it is. “Mentors?” he says. He grabs his computer and looks up his email and proceeds to read me an email from his law firm. They represent Mentors and had bought a table up front and had offered him tickets, but he turned them down because he knew I was busy at a “David Archuleta thing” that night. I could have been right upfront??? LOLOL! We need a little better communication skills at our house apparently. Oh well, it was so great to enjoy it with friends who love David too. What an amazing, memorable night!

Sometimes I do not give enough importance to the lyrics of the songs of David, because I do not understand its meaning, my language is Spanish. But when I read what you feel, I strive to try to translate and understand the meaning david gives each word.
Reading your article, cb, I think I made a big mistake by not listening to this song “Dream Sky High”, I promise that I will seek And find the meaning that gives the voice of david.
It would be false if a person did not say that I would have liked to be in your place, but David showed me something very valuable, I have to work very hard in my desires to be fulfilled.
I acknowledge that I am sometimes very critical when david sings in Spanish, but then I tell myself, “Gladys, David, not a diamond, it is not finished and polished and ready to sell, David is a gem something newly discovered, which lack polish, embellish, and then to be admired and revered, then emerge a beautiful invaluable.
I have decided that from now on do not I think if david, speak well or badly Spanish, if he forgets a letter or look at a photo a forced laugh, now it’s time to enjoy a 19-year-old singer relieves me soul every time I hear his voice.
Dream to be sitting at a table, dining, watching David sing like you cb.
Three years ago I was a totally different person, but now I can say, you were not alone in that table, I was also smiling, enjoying, listening to David and grateful that I’ve been there with you, thanks cb.
Thanks to each of you for allowing to be by your side when you are with David, when I read their articles and talk about his travels, his concerts, his VIP, I’m there too.
THANKS GIRLS.

Dear Gladys
I appreciate your comments and I agree 100%. DA does so many things in an extraordinary way that I can wish for him to “be” right now who I see him as.
But I have sons. And I know that it is so important for them to be able to grow at their own pace, to find and express themselves. It is worth it in the end. DA trusts us and asks us to trust him. He is generous in his vulnerability. Like my own sons, the moments of pure brilliance make it all worth while.
More than anyone, DA deserves the right to be 19.

I have enjoyed both write ups of the Mentor’s Gala. Hearing “Dream Sky High” live, I can’t even imagine it.
I would also like to tell jackryan4DA how much I enjoyed her analysis of “Who I Am” on the David Chronicles. I have an impossible time commenting on that sight, and she sometimes comes here.
I was buying my copy at itunes today and read their horrible review. Boy, that will help sales! Perhaps Everyone buying his CD should leave a positive comment. If I just read that review, without paying much attention to David or his music, I would pass right by. Boy, itunes sure gives that review a lot of power! Ugh.

Cb – loved your recap. Thanks for the in-depth details on Mentors. It is such a good cause. Instead of just throwing money at a cause and hoping it helps, they are starting people on a path to help themselves. I read about a similar thing awhile ago in Africa. The women were making brooms and selling them. Their own businesses. What a lift.
Also loved the food details. 🙂 I always enjoy hearing about that for some reason.
And David. ♥
He deserves some type of humanitarian award already. I have no doubt that he will be shining a light on certain causes for the rest of his life.

cb It’s interesting to read two recaps from the same event, both full of details. I remember hearing about a similar program to Mentors, but from the UN, where people in poverty-stricken areas were taught a skill, well enough to open and maintain a business. The chinese proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” comes to mind. But Mentor’s is special because as you said “None of the money you donate goes to administrative costs. It goes to the people.” By the comments and reaction of the audience, it was clear that they loved David!
Thank you for bringing that night to us, cb.
Gladys#2 We were waiting for you to notice your quote! 😀

Bluesky#3, I agree 100%! I respect David so much more for staying true to himself and trying HARD to still be a normal 19 year old! What an effort that must be with all he has on his plate and the ever-pressing media/haters trying to make him something he is not in order to sell records. He is really one smart young man. I trust his choices and will support him unconditionally whenever/wherever he needs me! 😉
P.S. I’ve missed your posts recently. I’m praying you are in a “Good Place” and recovery is speedy!

Thanks for sharing your own unique experience at this once in a lifetime event. Some things you brought out that I especially enjoyed~
How well-spoken and passionate, even tearful, David was while speaking for this cause.
The look of love on his face when introducing his mom.
Your excitement for his epic bachata dancing. “Kill me now.” haha.
What you had to eat. Like Betsy, I enjoy those little details that make me feel more there.
Your reaction to hearing “Dream Sky High” live.
“We have all heard a young David sing this song, but a now more mature David took it to a whole new level! It was one of those performances where he just laid his heart and soul right out there for you. I got chills, had tears in my eyes, and my heart was filled. His ability to communicate the feelings he feels is like nothing I have ever experienced. There is simply no one like him. This David Archuleta guy is one incredible human being!!!”
But the best part for me that never fails to make me LOL is the end when your husband checks his email on your return.
“Mentors?” he says. He grabs his computer and looks up his email and proceeds to read me an email from his law firm. They represent Mentors and had bought a table up front and had offered him tickets, but he turned them down because he knew I was busy at a “David Archuleta thing” that night. OMGOSH that is too hilarious! If you communicated half as well at home as you do in your writing that would never have happened. Thank you so much for including us in this very special night.
Gladys, I want to say something to you about your comment but will save it for a little later. 😉

I’ve noticed this respect and love for his mom that is so special. It reminds me of my own mother’s advice when I was a young teen about boyfriend material, “Always observe how he treats his mother because that is how he will treat the girl in his life”
Watching Dream Sky High brings me to tears and the experience of watching him sing it live you describe would have had me sobbing.
Going to check out those grammy submissions.

Bringing this over from the last thread that was posted just now. I think Bluesky wanted it to be seen by Pattirae and her husband but it is pure out-of-the Bluesky David love and needs to be shared.
A DA Season
In Chinese 5-element theory the “earth” symbol stands for late summer: abundance.
People feel grounded, experience gratitude. Full harvest is everywhere. The social aspect is to be connected, to experience giving and receiving in abundance.
The sound the Chinese associate with this season is “singing”.
Some people have a gift that makes it easy for them to give. They experience great joy in the act of sharing. Others can receive. They are able to absorb from the abundance of goodness around them and look with an open, kind and appreciative eye towards others, to “receive” from life, to be fed and sustained by its fullness.
I believe DA shows both of these abilities in… (well), abundance.
Times this by his yearning towards God.
So that when I hear him sing “Dream Sky High” (blessings on Mr. Pattirae forever), I feel as though DA has, through his own conscious, dynamic and inimitable willingness, opened a conduit through himself to me.
A conduit through which I hear the combined chorus of: my conscience (Jiminy Cricket), the throng of guardian angles assigned to me (my father insists it would take much more than just one), my own three Spirits of Christmas (past, present and future), the ‘wise child’ within who waits for me to listen and… the eye of heaven.
Bless you, DA for your willingness to both give and receive!
Bless you for your song.
Though at times I have to shade my eyes, it scours my soul with light.

Angelica, Djafan, Bebe, Betsy, Poof, Gladys, Thank you for your comments. I almost asked Angelica not to post my re-cap after reading Patti’s, I thought she had pretty well covered, so I’m glad really you still enjoyed it.
One thing I have been pondering after watching the video of “Dream Sky High.” is, it was DIFFERENT hearing it on video. I ask myself is it the difference in sound quality? There was really excellent sound there that night and his voice just filled the room. But I don’t think that is all there is to it. I think when you are in the room with David while he is singing, there is more. Some spirit that flows out of him and right to those who are open to hear it, or feel it, or something. I don’t really can’t explain it, but what I experienced that night was more than what can be captured on a camera. It was powerful, and touched people I talked to that weren’t his fans, yet. Somehow, I think those of you who went to the Christmas concert or maybe any concert must understand. All I know is this young man is a blessing.
A couple from the north east coast who are on the Board of Directors were talking about him after. The woman said she had told him he was adorable in VIP. Her husband said,” I hear him called cute, or adorable, but there is something more. There is a pureness or goodness or (he was struggling for words) just something about him and his voice.” The wife said, ” Well, I am now a fan, that was amazing.”
Angelica, VIP went along with the expensive seats. LOLOL I laugh so I don’t cry. LOL

I do get this. It happens. When it does , the whole room feels it. They become still and can’t move. The spirit he gives off grabs your full attention. All eyes and ears are focused on him. Pure magic that no camera can capture. You just have to be in the same room.

I agree, cb and Abrra. There is a big difference between seeing David on a youtube video and seeing him perform LIVE in person. While we are so grateful for youtubes, something gets lost in the translation. There is another dimension that doesn’t get picked up on the monitor. That’s what everyone means when they say ‘you have to see him live!” There’s just nothing like it. His voice fills up not only the whole room but all of your senses and takes control until he finishes singing. I’ve never experienced this with any other artist.

I knew you were thinking of doing this. But thank goodness the email I was dreading never came for though Patti’s recap was wonderful and she covered the gala well, she could not cover YOUR experience and feelings. You say that the video of Dream Sky High was not the same as being in the same room…

I agree so much with Angelica when she is talking about both recaps of the Mentor’s event (mine and yours) when she says that even though mine may have “covered the gala well,” cb, “YOUR experience and feelings,” were unique to you. I LOVED reading your recap of that special evening when we all felt so much love, emotion, and devotion for David. But you added a whole other layer to the event that was very much needed for everyone to get a grasp of what transpired that evening. Mentor’s International and the work they do around the world to fight poverty was so much a part of the evening and needed your voice to tell it. It means so much to me personally to have both reviews, which I have printed as a keepsake to describe the entire scope of the evening. Again, I loved your recap and the feelings it brought out in me to read it.
I absolutely loved it when you said, “His ability to communicate the feelings he feels is like nothing I have ever experienced. There is simply no one like him. This David Archuleta guy is one incredible human being!!!” Amen sister!!!
Then I loved it in your comments at #13 when you said, “…when you are in the room with David while he is singing, there is more. Some spirit that flows out of him and right to those who are open to hear it, or feel it, or something.” I also agree with you that a camera cannot capture what is in the room when he is performing. And yes, he truly “…is a blessing.”
I Love you so much, cb, thanks for your special friendship and thank you for this inspiring recap of Friday, Oct 8th (a night we will never forget.)

I am glad for other fans who were there, and glad that pattrirae’s husband perched that little camera on a glass and “let it roll” for those who weren’t.
I tried to soak it all up while in the moment, but with David, you sometimes feel like you need more than five senses to take it all in. I love hearing or reading about every tiny tidbit of what others observed or felt. David’s impact on us diehard fans is both collective and very personal, and I don’t want to miss anything that anyone is willing to share. Thank you again!

Hi CB, Pattirae and everyone,
I rarely post any comments on here(I lurk here at every opportunity I get)cause most of the time all the comments were exactly the thing I had in mind so don’t want to bore anyone with the same comment. After reading about Mentors gala dinner from Pattirae and Cb, I have to say…. this is why I’m stuck here in Archuleta Kingdom and never want to leave……though half way around the world this 19 years old guy has such an impact on me like no others. I still cannot fathom the admiration and RESPECT I have for him and that’s weird since I’m like only about 30 years older than him (man, I’m really that old), I’m pretty sure that he’s one of the most (if not the most) respected 19 year old guy on the planet I feel so blessed that I discover him. “The light” that he’s shone through his examples is so brigh yet warm and tender. He really is like what CB said “one incredible human being there’s simply no one like him”. I’m greatful for The Voice, you guys are like his massenger of some sort…I’ve learnt about this special young man through your posts and comments and it’s changed me for the better and am happier……so I have to settle for this simple “THANK YOU” since I have yet to find a better word(s) to express my gratitude to you guys, please never stop posting anything and everything Archuleta. By the way do I have to metion his voice and his look nah I guess not that picture on #19 and #20 said it all….whoaaa..flat line—————

A little personal story:
My 19 year-old daughter received a last-minute invite to her co-worker’s child’s 14th Birthday party tonight. It was too late to buy a gift so she asked me if I had any extra copies of TOSOD. (Of course I have extras; I bought a few in Target last week.) Always happy to share David’s music, I quickly wrapped one up for her to take to the party. She texted me a little while ago: “Mom, Carla loves David’s CD. She said she was going to buy one, anyway!”
😀 😀 😀 Made my day!

Claudia, I am so glad you didn’t stop this from being posted. It is awesome and so completes the whole picture of what we all experienced that night. Even though I was right there with you, through both you and Patti’s articles, I have been able to literally relive that night. When Patti called me and let me know about her article and the video’s her hubby took, I was elated to know that the whole fanbase would get to experience part of what we did. And then when you read me your article here, I knew everyone would be able to feel a bit of what we did. You both so captured that night perfectly. I love you both so much and am so thankful to David and the beautiful friendships we now have with each other because of our love of this extraordinary young man. And also for all the “online” friendships we all have now. If feels like family and it is so wonderful to be able to share our David joy with all of us here at “The Voice”. I too have to laugh that you and hubby did not communicate about that night. Cause we could have also gone to the Meet and Greet with David if we had sat at that table and introduced our hubby’s to this fabulous human being named David Archuleta and I know they would have felt of his spirit and his goodness as we do, and then when they heard him and watched him, they would have been gonners too, I think. Cause who isn’t when they witness him live!! It is a given!
On another note, just recruited a few more to register for the MoTab Christmas Concert. I am being postive here that I will at least get 4 tickets to one of the nights! Lookin on the up side here with fingers crossed. When I went last year to this event I so wanted it to be David singing with them instead of Natalie Cole, and my dream has come true, and I feel I have done all I can to try to get those coveted tickets. Any extras I might win will be a bonus to share with any fans who might not win and want to come. I will for sure let you all know how it goes.

Hello regulars, some time posters, and lurkers!!!
I love reading all you all have to say whether it’s been said before or not, it could never be said to much! I know I sometimes just need to verbalize my feelings even I’ve done it a dozen times here amongst friends who get “it”. It helps with the ODD…lol So please never hesitate to comment and thank you for all the kind words regarding this site, you all make it what it is.
Fanclub news! Can’t wait to become an official card carrying member!

Pocoelsy, I loved your comments.Especially these, “I still cannot fathom the admiration and RESPECT I have for him.” and “The light” that he’s shone through his examples is so bright yet warm and tender.” It touches my heart to know that wonderful people half way around the world feel what we feel about David. I am usually kind of a lurker but sometimes you just have to speak out when your heart is so full. I hope we hear more from you.
Skydancer1x You made me laugh with your desserts is stressed backwards comment. Does that mean we can eat dessert when we are stressed and it will balance everything out? I hope so. LOL
Ray #32 and Abbra #16 It is REAL and maybe explains why seeing him once is not enough and you want, need, MORE of the feeling.
Thanks Archugeezer and Shawna. I am so glad you were there. And Archugeezer, I loved, and laughed, at what you wrote on MomJulee”s blog. That was really, really entertaining. I wrote my recap up and sent it before I read the others. If I had read them first, I would have just filed mine quietly away in my personal “memory box!” LOL But, I can never hear enough either when I can’t be there and I really appreciate getting to read what you all write.

“…but he turned them down because he knew I was busy at a “David Archuleta thing” that night.” bahahahahahahahahaha! The twists & turns of an archie!
Thanks you for sharing your story. It was as if I was there. Hope someday I can share a table with you guys and with David live singing CELD, Dream Sky High, MKOP, STR, WIA… the whole enchilada!
