Pattirae’s Recap From Mentor’s Gala
Posted by pattirae4dja on Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Patti and her husband, Delos, with Lupe and David.
Back in mid-summer, when I saw a post on a fansite of a charitable concert and dinner for Mentor’s International my heart started pounding and I began to cry because I felt so blessed. Please allow me share my story with you. I live near Ogden Utah, just north of Salt Lake City. Several weeks ago, my husband’s brother and his wife came to visit us from Arizona. That Sunday they wanted to go to SLC to hear the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing in their weekly broadcast, “The Spoken Word” at the conference center. My husband has a cousin, Ron, who not only sings in the Choir but is the Choir’s Special Projects PR person. Ron knew we were coming that morning and when he came into the audience to visit with us before the performance, he mentioned that he had just arrived home from India. When we asked why he had been to India he said that he was involved with a charity called Rising Star Outreach. When I could start breathing once again, and felt like I could utter an intelligent sentence, I calmly asked, “Isn’t that the charity that David Archuleta is involved with?” He smiled warmly and said “Yes, in fact, David and I will be going to India sometime together early next year.” He could “read” my interest and began talking with me about David. Among other things, he mentioned that he had been to Honduras with David—to which I rudely broke in and said, “Last January, with his mom, right?” Again with a smile, he said yes. Then he mentioned that David was going to be performing in SLC on October 8th, and would we like tickets? Gasp! Faint! Stutter! Oh, for sure, I said. Well, I didn’t hear from him after that and didn’t know whether to call him or not. It was July, after all, and I felt like I had some time. But I did feel a little in limbo just hoping he would call and let me know about tickets and when they would be going on sale.
Now for the fun part!!! My husband is a dentist, and Ron’s wife brought one of their daughters up to see him for a checkup. My “angel” husband (also a David fan) brought up the subject of David to her because of our conversation with her husband Ron a few weeks earlier. My husband proceeded to tell her all about my love and admiration for David, about all the concerts, the VIP’s, the fan parties, the hours spent on fan sites, how I still listen to his Christmas album, the numerous book signings, watching his videos, over and over, etc. He told me that she just kept smiling and saying “really!!!” every time he would mention something else. Then, the most beautiful words ever spoken, spilled from her lips, “I think that Ron and I should make sure that you and Patti sit at our table with David and his mother when he performs at a special dinner and concert here in Salt Lake on Oct. 8th. In fact, I am going to call Ron right now.” When she mentioned to Ron what her call was about, he said to her, “that’s funny, I am with David’s mother right now!” So, you can imagine my tears when I saw the post for the first time about the Mentors International event and realized that not only will I be there, but I will be sitting at or near the table with precious, adorable, humble, loving, talented, special human being, David Archuleta.
I awoke the morning of October 8th with “butterflies” in my tummy, and “stars” in my eyes. My special day with David was finally here. The day seemed to drag at first and then all of a sudden it was time for my husband and me to head for Salt Lake City. On the way, hubby was describing every golf shot he had made that day and I was sooo pretending to listen to him. My stomach was in such a state, and my mind was racing with so many thoughts—how many songs, what songs, how close to the stage? How close to David will I sit? How many David friends will I get to see and hug? Will Ron introduce us to David? And will I get some pictures with him?

Delos, Lupe, Me, Ron and David
The concert began with “Angels” on the keyboard, followed by “Things Are Gonna Get Better.” His mother then came on the stage and performed two Spanish songs. The first one was very tender, about family, and when she stepped off the platform and came to our table and reached for her father who was sitting close to me, she started to cry. They stood together with their arms around each other for several minutes before she stepped back up and finished the song. Her next song, “Mi Tierra,” was so much fun when she went out into the audience and pulled several people up on stage to dance with her during the song. David then returned to the stage to sing “Contigo En La Distancia” to which I burst into tears, just couldn’t help myself. His mother returned to sing a duet with him “A Puro Dolor” with the two of them dancing—you heard me, dancing! He then brought the house down with his closing remarks and song “Dream Sky High.”
When the concert was over, a huge crowd instantly surrounded David. Ron was trying to get him out fast, so I quickly gave Ron a bag with all the gifts and letters in it (I had given him notice beforehand) to which he assured me that he personally would give them to David. Lupe turned around and gave me a hug. It felt like a warm gratitude hug. I will never forget how I felt at that moment. Wow, it was over. They were quickly gone and the crowd dissipated. I had waited for this evening since July 25th and it was more glorious than I could have ever imagined.
When we returned home and my husband was downloading the pictures we’d taken, he called me into the room and proceeded to show me the videos he had taken. WHAT!!!! I didn’t know he had even taken them! I didn’t even dream!!! He said he perched our small camera on a glass and let it roll. So the angle is not the best…and some are just snippets, but best of all is the full recording of “Dream Sky High.” I still have to pinch myself that all of this really happened. But you can well “imagine” I will never forget it.
Videos hubby took. 😉 Enjoy!

Pattirae, this is fantastic. Seeing David perform these songs (and dance!) adds so much. PS, is Delos Greek, by any chance? It’s a Greek name, so I’m wondering! If so, tell him yiasu 😉

#1 Nicola, I just re-read your comment and didn’t realize at first that you were wondering if my husband WAS Greek! No, when his father was in Dental School his best friend was named Delos so they named my husband after this friend. But there IS for sure an island named Delos in Greek mythology.
I really am still pinching myself that all of this really happened. I was thinking today that none of this would have happened if we hadn’t asked Ron what he’d been up to lately (he is so involved with so many enterprises, charities, the Choir, etc.) and he said he’d “just returned home from India.” Well, the rest is history as they say.
My love to everyone here.

What a classy night! The picture of the four of you is fabulous, all of you are so good looking!
Then and it was THEN, I clicked on to the video of David and Lupe’s duet. The dancing! I have felt forever that his dancing will astound us as much as his singing, or nearly, just give it the chance.
This is so rich and that is the only way to describe it. Thank you to your husband, our newest Ninja, for capturing the most wonderful moments on video. This is the most dancing that we have had the pleasure of seeing. I am in awe of the video, the Spanish singing and the dancing. I seriously have to take some deep breaths…

The pictures are b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l, what an opportunity to have been there and so close. Dream Sky High is probably one of my favorite songs of when he was young, I have it on my ipod and because of your ninja husband we all have a David now version, it was heaven to my heart and soul.
I always knew David could dance and being familiar with this dancing I loved when he put his hand on her waist and led the dancing, the turn, incredible. We will see an increase in fans and the demand for David even more when the spanish album is done and his live performances blow everyone away.
The Other Side Of Down debuted at #13 on the billboard 200, very very good. Everyone’s sales numbers are down for a slew of reasons so this showing is great. Now the label and new management have to do their job and we his fans will continue to support and promote him, (try not to look to crazed in the process..lol)
David Archuleta makes his debut on The Billboard 200 this week at No. 13, selling 24,000 copies of his The Other Side of Down album. The latest albums by Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and Adam Lambert also made the top 200, according to Nielsen SoundScan, though none of them saw increases to their weekly sales totals.

I agree with Skydancer1x, my precious husband is the “fan kingdom’s man of the hour.” I know that he was only thinking of me when he took those videos, knowing it would make me so happy. Little does he know what an impact it now has on the fans to experience just a little of what we were able to experience Friday evening. Pattirae, I’m in awe of your recap and, well, just your whole experience. What a choice memory this will be forever. You were in the right place at the right time and as the saying goes, things happen for a reason. I’d say that one of those reasons was for your wonderful husband to get these marvelous video’s and then sharing them with all of us, especially the dancing and “Dream Sky High”. How I’ve been waiting to hear him sing this live. Please tell your husband thank you and give him a big ((((HUG))) from me.
Lupe and David look like they had a joyous time together. Their relationship is an inspiration and very heartfelt. Having had the opportunity of meeting Lupe, I would agree with you that she is one gracious lady and so proud of your son.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. Love the pictures too.

I had the honor of having you share this story with Claudia and I from the beginning and it has been pure joy to watch you anticipating this epic night. I was able to also be there on this special night and I will cherish the memory forever of the whole evening! It was unbelievable in every way.
I just want to say here, that as you can see Patti and her husband are awesome people, not only from what you see, but they are absolutely beautiful people inside and out. From the second picture of all of them above, you can see that David feels that too about Patti. David, the one who doesn’t like holding hands, let Patti hold on to his hand the whole time she was talking to him here!! She is such a sweet, loving person, and you can’t help but be drawn to her.(And by the way, so is her amazing ninja husband!!) And beleive me, when she tells you she has tears, she does!. We went together to the Utah Fan Event that David called on the day of the CD release and she was so giddy and tearful and happy, and on the way home while listening to “A Good Place” she started tearing up again. I am so thankful that David brought us together as friends and I will be forever grateful to him. Thank you Patti for this article and for being my sweet friend. I have copied it to keep with all of my David stuff. You are an amazing writer and should write more articles here. I loved this and thanks for forwarning me about the vids so I didn’t have a heart attack when I opened this site today. You are the best ever.

O, and on another note, I have a little tidbit to share with you from last Sunday at church. The woman who has interviewed David now twice for the Deseret News, lives in my church ward and she knows how much I love David, well everyone does there now!Surprise, surprise!! She stopped me after church was over and told me about doing the last interview. First I had to tell her she was in big trouble for not taking me with her(she told me she would the next time she got to interview him), but she said it was between the two conference sessions a week ago Sunday, and she tried to call our house, but we weren’t home. Anyways, enough details already, she told me about talking to him about not being able to serve a “normal” church mission which she did not add to the article. He explained to her that he would not be able to serve the conventional two year mission cause he needs to honor his contract with Jive, but he feels he is serving a different type of mission by showing people that you can still be yourself and succeed and live your dreams. You can live true to your standards and he feels it is his mission not to ever cave into the pressures of being a celebrity like so many do. That is why he wrote the book, so that he could let people know what he believes and now he knows people know all of that and he can be an example of living true to who you are. He says so many people are watching every move he makes and he needs to just be him and not try to be something he is not. We all know this, but I just thought I would share.
She now has my cell phone number, so next time she can get a hold of me so I can maybe be the photographer or something or hold her tape recorder or whatever. She was also at the Mentor Gala that night, somehow I missed her, but she got to help accompany David and his mom out of the ballroom at the end of the event. She just loves him too and she gets to speak to him in Spanish cause she is from Columbia, and her English is not too good at all. I have a very hard time understanding her.
Just thought I would share this with all of you.

I e-mailed Mentors with a query about them producing a video that we could purchase, and this is what I got back from Lauren K., the office manager 😦
“Unfortunately, due to David’s contractual agreement with Sony, we will be unable to upload any video or pictures of him. I apologize for this but we do appreciate your support of Mentors International.”
So you can see how precious these from your husband are. 🙂

Hi! It’s my 1st time to post here. I discovered the site thru Snarkies. I just want to say that I love reading all the articles and comments here. They always make me smile and sometimes cry tears of joy. Your love for David comes through loud and clear on these pages. 🙂 I love David because his music and his voice have been with me through a lot of experiences – both good and bad. Actually, he’s the only singer I can listen to without wanting to change the music. I can listen to him sing for hours on end. Usually, when I listen to my ipod, I need to mix the songs around because I get tired of just listening to 1 voice. But not with David. I’ve been listening to TOSOD so much that bits and pieces of the songs just suddenly come to mind. MKOP makes me cry because I feel his heart in that song. TOSOD makes me smile and there’s something about his voice in that song. He sings it in a different tone I think which I absolutely love. STR and Parachutes just make me want to dance around my room. Basically, I just love the whole album and wanted to share with other David fans. 🙂

BTW I just stopped at a Walmart to pick up Bruno Mars album (saw him in August and he is adorable AND talented) and I did not see David’s album on the new release display. After a hunt I found about 6 copies buried in the A file behind C Aguilera. That would not do, so I grabbed a handful and gave him a prominent spot on the New Release shelf. I mean…. come on!!!

The Chilean Miners have been rescued! I noticed they all looked clean & most looked like they shaved before coming up to meet their loved ones. They were all smiles but I imagine most of them will have on-going post-tramatic stress issues for a very long time, much like frontline soldiers coming home from war. One can only imagine what they went through. It will be interesting which talk show has the first interview with one or all of the miners. 😉

Just a funny little mention I have to make. We all remember the night that David sang “Imagine”. Almost all of the time I write something about him, I use the word imagine and for the moment I remember the song. It seems a little odd, but we all do it when we write about David. Patti’s last sentence once again, ” But you can well ‘imagine’ I will never forget it”. It sometimes spooks me just a little.

We do what we have to do! I went to my Target yesterday to buy a few more TOSODs. The good news is that they were playing the SBL video! The bad news is that TOSOD was not under “New Releases”. It was instead under ‘Coming Soon’! Are they for real? I told the manager that the cd has been out for a week and watched as he moved all the TOSODs to the proper rack. I then scooped up a few of the regular ones and left four of the deluxes there for someone else.

Pattirae,
Your experience also has me in tears! What an amazing time you had with David and his beautiful mother! So many of us only dream of something like that happening to us, and have to come to the sad realization that it probably just won’t ever happen. 😦 But thanks to you and your generous heart of sharing and telling us all in detail what you got to do is so wonderful. I laughed at the part of you sitting at your table discreetly staring at David w/o him noticing!! HAHA You’re a girl after my own heart! I would have done the same exact thing!! *wink* Once you gaze upon that angelic face it’s impossible to look away.
I could not believe it when I saw on twitter the tweets of videos that had surfaced of David dancing with his mother!!! And then the complete shock of Dream Sky High not to mention the FULL VERSION!!! I have been so moved and inspired by Dream Sky High time and time again! I thought I would never hear him sing it live. I am SO THANKFUL to you and your stealth husband! You both are bright lights yourselves and I think it’s so wonderful that you both share admiration for David!
Now, where do we sign up to go on that mission trip with Ron and David???!!!! I’ll be the first!

Most dear and lovely people:
I am coming back from a very interesting experience with doctors and surgery and… would you believe staples?
(Well actually, I asked the the nurse if she would please count the staples before she took them out cause I wanted to be able to tell my grandkids how many “body piercings” I have had. The number was 47. *_* )
Through it all I have tried to peek in here as I could and get my foggy brain and emotions to wrap around all the love you all share and all the service you give in support of “goodness”, talent, light and DA.
I just want to say “Thank You” for being here and being who you are.
Just thanks, thankfulness, thanksgiving, appreciation, gratitude, gladness, heartwarming hugs, acknowledgement, best wishes for continuing good fortune and respect and love and much abundance of shared inspiration.
That’s all.

From NanDeeAy regarding MOTAB tickets
1. Everyone will be able to see David sing 2-3 songs on TV on Sunday, Dec
19 on the program “Music and the Spoken Word.” They always invite the guest
artist to be part of this program. Those who are in attendance at the
Conference Center during this broadcast will be able to stay after the
broadcast and listen to him sing a few more songs. At least that is the way
it has always been done in the past.
2. If there are fans who won’t be able to come to Salt Lake City for any of
the concerts, they can still apply for tickets. If they get tickets, they
could give them to other fans who can attend but didn’t get tickets. In
other words, the tickets are transferable. You can apply for 4 tickets per
household. You can also rank your preference on which concerts you wish to
attend.
The link to apply on-line or over the phone is:

Patti you should find out if they need volunteers to go on this trip to India. We could turn it into a real humanitarian project with the amount of volunteers just this fansite could come up with!!
Once again, I loved your re-cap and the videos.

Skydancer#105 I’m not familiar with the Ultimate Chart either but up 240 points sounds good to me.
Here’s a little more about the Ultimate Chart:
“How did we reach the Ultimate?
By standing on the shoulders of giants. The Ultimate Chart is an unprecedented aggregation of timely, relevant metrics and a product of our friends’ and partners’ hard work and well-deserved success. We analyze and integrate information about music everywhere — from Amazon and iTunes and YouTube and VEVO and Pandora and Clear Channel and Myspace and Facebook and Yahoo and AOL and many, many others.
How do we put it all together?
The Ultimate Chart is a chart for the 21st century, based on a scalable technology platform developed over more than ten years. We collect billions of points of data, online and off. Our machines are very clever but our analysts are too. Real people grade the computers’ work to ensure accuracy. We collect more relevant information from more sources than anyone ever has, by our count.
But don’t worry. We’re not taking a day off. The Ultimate 100 is just the beginning. Stay tuned.”

A DA Season
In Chinese 5-element theory the “earth” symbol stands for late summer: abundance.
People feel grounded, experience gratitude. Full harvest is everywhere. The social aspect is to be connected, to experience giving and receiving in abundance.
The sound the Chinese associate with this season is “singing”.
Some people have a gift that makes it easy for them to give. They experience great joy in the act of sharing. Others can receive. They are able to absorb from the abundance of goodness around them and look with an open, kind and appreciative eye towards others, to “receive” from life, to be fed and sustained by its fullness.
I believe DA shows both of these abilities in… (well), abundance.
Times this by his yearning towards God.
So that when I hear him sing “Dream Sky High” (blessings on Mr. Pattirae forever), I feel as though DA has, through his own conscious, dynamic and inimitable willingness, opened a conduit through himself to me.
A conduit through which I hear the combined chorus of: my conscience (Jiminy Cricket), the throng of guardian angles assigned to me (my father insists it would take much more than just one), my own three Spirits of Christmas (past, present and future), the ‘wise child’ within who waits for me to listen and… the eye of heaven.
Bless you, DA for your willingness to both give and receive!
Bless you for your song.
Though at times I have to shade my eyes, it scours my soul with light.

Perhaps those of you in the US can still submit it on her behalf? Is it still on?
