“One More Song!!!”
Posted by betsy on Monday, October 4, 2010
To begin this recap, let me just say that the day hadn’t gone well. I almost didn’t go, and then on the way there, I almost turned around ten times.
But I didn’t.
After talking to a good friend, 🙂 I was ready to stay on my path (or interstate, lol) Thank you, love.
I had horrible directions (and a horrible sense of direction), so I parked and walked. Five blocks down, I entered the pavilion. There were quite a few people standing around the front of the stage, about 15 feet of people. There is no real way of guessing how many people, but maybe 500-700. Not too crowded. There were some people sitting casually around the semi-circle of graduated steps toward the back. Not too bad. I walked up and staked out a spot. David’s band was setting up for their soundcheck. I was there maybe ten minutes when he came out.
“Uno, dos, tres”, said he, testing his mic, all wrapped up in a radio logo’d gray parka. Adorable. He launched into Elevator. Or was it STR? I know he did both, but the order? I am all confused and sleep deprived.
While he was singing, I looked behind me. People were being drawn to the pavilion. There was an endless sea of people swarming in. His voice was so clear and loud, the downtown night was filled with his voice. People there for the Art Prize heard his voice and just came towards it. Goodness, I can still see the people. And hear his voice. I figured that after the soundcheck, some would probably leave. But no. They stayed and their numbers grew.
The other bands soundchecked, yada, yada. The other bands played. I liked Ryan Star, yada, yada. Oh, before the bands played, the dj’s came out and were talking about the show. Who came to see so and so? When he got to David’s name the screams ERUPTED. I kid you not. Louder than for anyone, and that included Natasha Bedingfield. He asked who followed @Davidarchie on Twitter. Mentioned how many people tweeted them from all over the world when they tweeted about David.
Then. David came out and blew everyone in that crowd away. The crowd which, we were told, had grown to twenty thousand. His voice sounded strong and husky and beautiful and I can still hear it in my head, almost 24 hours later.
There was a group of teenage girls next to me who were in love with David. IN LOVE. I heard it many times, lol. I knew they were real fans when they sang along with Altnoy, Crush, and Zero Gravity. But when David sang MKOP, the 20 thousand melted away and it was almost quiet. And those girls were in tears, along with many others. I loved those girls. I love that they love David, and have him to look up to. A yardstick to measure boys by. I think he teaches them that they deserve respect.
David and his band left the stage after Crush. It was over. Really David? That crowd thought not. I heard a few people start chanting “ONE MORE SONG, ONE MORE SONG”. Soon the entire place was chanting. Then it was “DAVID, DAVID, DAVID!!!” The DJ came out and said, “Keep it up, it might work!”
Video credit GeminiJJ22
Then out from behind the stage, David and his band ran out on stage.
Video credit JAproductions
And history was made. Awww. His encore was Zero Gravity. He told the crowd to jump with him, and twenty thousand did.
David was a SUPERSTAR last night.

Dear Betsy,
I really appreciate the fact that you stuck it out and went! And I loved your heartwarming write-up.
May your ears vibrate to that sound for many a day. Keeping rhythm with your memories. (I think a bit of spontaneous vocal exuberance would be in line as well.)
(If I were Yogi Bear I would contribute my own: “Hey, hey, hey!!!”) (Watch me as I blithely substitute “Laid back” for “I’m only lying here because I lack the strength to stand.”)

So much excitement that night! His very first encore on demand! History indeed. Thank you for taking the time to put this all down for us.
I was lurking in the cell cast and all present were as anxious as the crowd in Grand Rapids wondering for a few seconds if he would return to sing one more song. Then when he stated singing Zero Gravity, the chat exploded! It’s very obvious he is getting comfortable with these new songs, embracing them with his voice like a proud Papa.
Found this on snowangelzz, ha!

Justin’s Take On The Other Side of Down
Posted by Justin Vaughn in Music
In a world filled with music that has a tendency to degrade women, condone violence or promote a vocabulary that would be improper for any appropriate conversation, David Archuleta brings a positive message to everyone that is willing to listen. What a breath of fresh air in the music industry! David co-wrote 10 of the 12 songs on this album. You are sure to get a glimpse of the real “David” throughout this entire record. This is one reason that I have been so excited about getting to listen to his new music, because I knew it was going to be 100% David.

It was 4:00 am and there was a disturbing noise outside our window. All of the dogs rushed to a viewing station but all was well so perhaps it was a raccoon or the neighbor’s cat. In the still of the night, when everyone was settled, I found that I was wide awake. I reached for my ipod but to no avail it was battery dead. So next to it was my iphone and I held it for awhile trying to lower the brightness. I think that I almost fell back to sleep when there was this lovely “ping” that made me smile. I only get “pings” at this hour when there is a new article posted. So of course I was smiling as we do for everything in David’s world.
Betsy, I enjoyed every word of your story. I was able to appreciate the encore a significant part of the performance. The pictures being taken are becoming real works of art!
I think that we are in a mulitiplication phase where we will see everything that he has worked towards, every path that he has taken, every lesson that he has tried to pass along (patience for example), now vastly multiply his performances and the number of his new admirers. Where it was 1,000 new fans x 2, now it will be 1,000,000 x 2 new fans every other week or every month. It is all rather limitless and wonderful.
Thank you Betsy, it was so fine.

Oh Betsy…so glad you were able to complete your journey…just one foot in front of the other. I was so excited when you said… “There was an endless sea of people swarming in” and then “They stayed and their numbers grew.”
I got a message yesterday from my sister-in-law telling me of an article in the paper that said David Archuleta’s popularity was increasing. She said…”I think it is because of you being such a loyal fan.” I laughed a little at this and then “I took all the credit”. Haha! After taking all the credit I then added that actually David has many loyal fans and that I had made many friends from all over the world because of David. I continued to tell her what an example of goodness he is..not only in his singing but also in the way he lives his life. She agreed!!!
Thanks for your recap…you made my morning bright and cheerful!

Great recap of a thrilling experience! I was on the cellcast too and we were so excited when the crowd started chanting! So glad you finally got there and brought us along. It must have been intoxicating to have actually been there. I love what you said about the teenage girls near you.
“There was a group of teenage girls next to me who were in love with David. IN LOVE. I heard it many times, lol. I knew they were real fans when they sang along with Altnoy, Crush, and Zero Gravity. Bringing over these last two posts from the last thread. This pic (omyheart) and lastly, Skydancerx1’s comment. I think many of us can relate after these past few days. Sky, nice try but you know as well as I do he has no intentions of cutting us any slack. 😛

“My sleep hours are all messed up! Took 2 long naps to catch up on some sleep today ….DAVID, it’s all your fault! Why do you have to be so dang wonderful and adorable and fun, and sweet and spontaneous and quirky and funny, and unique and then take to the stage and kill us with your one of a kind smile smile, flawless skin, smokin’passionate vocals and smooth moves, and strutting across the stage like that with your peeking belt So just stop it some more, don’t do it again, and knock it off never ever!!Got it Mister??”

Music Monday: Something ‘Bout Love – David Archuleta’s NEW Album {Giveaway}
Do you remember the first time you fell in love? Your heart beats faster. Your stomach turns upside down. You can’t help, but smile when you see that certain someone. Then it ends. Your heart is broken, but you do it all over again. Why? Because there’s something about love.
I’ve been married for 10 years this Spring, but I still remember how he made me feel the first time I met him because he still makes me feel that way. When he’s telling spooky stories with the kids by the chiminea, or when he’s playing with our new puppy, and even when the stress of life is falling down all around us. There’s just something ’bout love.
This morning, I’m bundled up with my favorite sweater, in my pjs, with a warm cup of coffee. I’m organizing my editorial calendar and listening to David Archuletta. He has a new album hitting stores mañana (that’s tomorrow folks) and I was lucky enough to grab a sneak peek of the WHOLE thing the last few weeks.
Yeah. The kids thought I was the COOLEST.
One particular song that I can’t get out of my head is Something ‘Bout Love. It describes how you feel when you first meet someone. When you fall in love. When you have an attraction to someone. When you can’t get them out of your head. When you’re longing for just another afternoon with them, even for just an hour. Oh, and it’s a great little song to add to your iPod for that long run (which I TOTALLY plan to do today in this beautiful weather).
Love is heartbreaking, but oh the freedom of emotions is SO worth it. Don’t you think?

Betsy: Such a heartfelt recap; thank you! And thank you for your texts and tweets during the show. It couldn’t have been easy to shuffle your camera and phone while watching what was taking place onstage.
That he came back out to the screaming fans chant of “One More Song” is very telling. He was not the headliner; he was the opening act. Normally, openers don’t get the privilege of an encore. It takes away from the headliner in terms of time and accolades. That the dj and or/Natasha allowed this is groundbreaking!
“I loved those girls. I love that they love David, and have him to look up to. A yardstick to measure boys by. I think he teaches them that they deserve respect.” <<< Beautiful!
David has this amazing ability of making his fans do things we never thought we'd do. We drive for hours and hours, through ice storms, walk for miles just to hear him sing even two songs. On second thought, he doesn't even have to sing. An autograph is enough. Yes, there is something special about him.
I'm glad you persevered, Betsy! The prize is so worth the effort.
(Found this on Twitter but neglected to get the name. My bad.)

This from USA Today Idol Chatter…David is something else.
David Archuleta learns to embrace his inner dork
David Archuleta had a dream last week that really spooked him. He was singing at an outdoor event when, suddenly, the entire audience got up during the middle of his performance and walked out.
“It didn’t look like they hated it, or that I did something,” the 19-year-old singer recalls. “It just freaked me out. It was one of the creepiest dreams I’ve had. The fact that everyone left: Was I making any kind of impact on anyone?”
David hopes The Other Side of Down, out Tuesday, will make an impact. Concerned that his 2008 debut album revealed very little about him — other than that he could sing — he determined his follow-up would have a more personal touch.
“This album, it’s definitely more quirky,” David says. “It’s more of a lighthearted side of David than ever before. There are always different sides to people, but I wanted to show that light, fun, dorky side to me this time.”
There was just one problem: David was so worried that he wouldn’t have anything worth saying or that people wouldn’t find him very interesting that he practically paralyzed himself creatively.
One on level, The Other Side of Down is David’s fight through those fears. The album begins with a bunch of questions hanging over David’s head.
“There are so many to ask,” he says. “That’s the thing.
“Sometimes, I think the reason I get stuck is because I ask myself so many things, more than I can handle. I dig myself a hole, wondering what I should do, what’s going on. Sometimes, I need to stop over-thinking and just go for something.”
That hole that David sometimes digs himself into is central to the new album. Many of his fans heard the album’s title and thought, “That’s a clever way of saying, ‘Up’!” But for all the album’s self-described quirkiness and light-heartedness, the album finds David starting at Down — in that hole, beneath those questions — and hoping to reach that other side.
David eventually overcame that block, writing more than 50 songs with more than a dozen other writers during the year he spent working on The Other Side of Down. Along the way, he learned to embrace his “inner dork.”
“I know the kind of person I am,” he says. I know how the world looks at impressive people and cool people and people who succeed. I do not fit that mold.
“So how am I supposed to be in a position where everyone’s looking at me? How am I going to make that positive impact and be impressive to people?
“I could try to be cool. A lot of artist get developed, get an image and get that whole mysterious persona. I can not do that. I could try, but I know that’s not me. One of the biggest things for me is to be honest with myself and real with other people. If I were to try to create an image that’s not who I am to look appealing to other people, I’d be so uncomfortable with that.
“It’s like I was fighting with myself: ‘David, you’re not cool! What if people don’t like who you are, because you’re not that image?’ Then I was like, ‘Not everyone’s going to like who you are, no matter what you do. Somebody’s always going to have a problem with you.’
“This is what I realized: What if there are other people out there who are like me? Who are wondering the same things as me, feeling the same way? I can relate to them!”
Buried in the middle of the ninth song on The Other Side of Down, there’s a key line: “I could be a memory tomorrow,” David sings in Good Place. “I could be nothing at all.” It’s the kind of lyric someone familiar with the career arcs of American Idol finalists might be expected to write, but, for David, the lines are about more than the possibility of peaking as a teen then returning to anonymity.
“That’s one of my biggest fears, to not mean anything,” David says. “I’m always afraid of being left behind.
“Even when I was in school, I didn’t want to be left behind. “It was, like, ‘Man, I wonder if these kids are even going to be remember me in a few years, when high school’s over? ‘Cause everybody goes their separate ways. Am I going to make an impact? Am I going to influence these kids, or am I just going to have been a kid who was at high school years ago?
“I want to be able to something meaningful, leave a lasting impression on people.
“The scariest thing for me, I guess, is being useless. It’s not like I want to be remembered, period. I want to be remembered for the right thing.”

Betsy, love this recap of your experience. It must have been the most amazing experience in the world. The videos, even though they are awesome, I am sure don’t capture what you witnessed that night. I can hardly wait for Friday and my chance to see him sing these songs live at “The Mentor’s International” event here in SLC.
Off subject here, but I have a fun little story to tell about yesterday!
Yesterday I was up in Park City again for the day with my daughter and her darling little family and we were sitting on the couch and my little sweet, not yet 4 yr old, granddaughter Kate asked her, not yet 6 yr old brother Tyler if he had seen David’s movie of “Something ‘Bout Love” and he said he didn’t know, so she asked me to show him. I sat between them and played it for them. And lo and behold, she sang every single word perfect along with the whoa oh oh’s and her parents looked at me like, what have you done to her, and her brother not wanting to be outsung, learned it fast and was singing it word for word by the second viewing of it and he said it was because he had learned some of it while listening in my car. Never too young to start these little ones realizing what a GEM he is. Alot of my other grandkids (11 total and the oldest one is 8 yrs old) love him too and either ask me to play “Elevator” or “SBL” every time they get in the car with me or see me on the computer looking at the sites. They are always asking me if they can play my phone, and when they look at the pix they are always saying, you have so many pictures of David on here!! “Do you love him, Grandma? Is he your boyfriend? and on and on.” It is so fun to explain to them why I do love this young man and that, no, he is not my boyfriend, that their grandpa is my boyfriend!!! They used to play the games on my phone, but now they just look for anything David. I luv it!! HAHA!! Even though I can’t convert their parents, I can them!!!:))) Then they can work on their parents as they get older and really learn to appreciate his music, not just cause Grandma likes his music and him.

I missed the AP Livestream! But thanks to Snarkies, here’s a partial transcript. Thank you, Snarkies!
“I want to make a lasting impression.” He says he’s always nervous working in a studio because it’s so permanent – “There’s no turning back when it’s on the album.” He says the first few takes are usually used from the studio because there’s more emotion in them – he’s feeling rather than thinking.
Does he have a favorite track?
They all mean something to him but there’s a reason the title track is the title track. “That song and what it meant represents so much of what’s going on with me right now in this stage of my life. It talks about those confusions and what goes on in my head a little bit. … I could get stuck or I could keep moving forward. Despite the confusions or frustrations, you have to keep moving forward. … You can’t really plan out your future because you don’t know what’s going to happen.” He said if you’d asked him 5 years ago what his life would be like now, he would’ve had no idea. “Everyone has opportunities, and it’s just a matter of how you handle them and if you’re gonna go for them or not. They exist in everyone’s lives. … Everyone has an opportunity to make a difference and make an impact and enjoy life.” The idea of “the other side of down” makes people think, and that was the point of the album, to make people think more creatively or abstractly.
Interviewer: “You’re traveling a lot – you’re here, you’re there…”
David, singing: “Eeeeverywheeereee.”

Does he wish he could have a more normal life of someone his age?
He loves music and when he didn’t do music, it felt like there was something missing. He knew he had to have music involved in his life somehow. “I really enjoy doing this. Nothing in life comes free. If it’s something, I think the true desires in your life and that you feel inside, those aren’t gonna come easy becaues the most valuable things and the things that are most worth it are… they come with more of a cost. It’s gonna be harder. But that’s what kinda makes its value so great, is how hard you worked for it. No-one can take away the experiences and what you learned on your journey. If everything was just given to you, it’s like, you don’t appreciate it at much. So it’s not easy but it’s definitely worth it, and I really do love it. If you stick through it, you’re not gonna have those regrets of ‘Oh, why didn’t I stick to it? Why didn’t I keep going?'”
Would he change anything?
He wouldn’t. “There’s always a reason why you went through something, and you don’t always realize that now. There are times when it takes years to realize that. … I don’t want to change something that might have been difficult in my past that might teach me something down the road, because you never know. The only thing I can change is my attitude about what’s going to happen. … That’s the thing we have most control over – the attitude we’re gonna keep in whatever happens. … That’s what’s going to have the biggest impact on other people too. People pay attention to how you handle things. It’s not the millionaire who has all the nice things and stuff that teaches you the most.” He gave the examples of a widow who lives a simple life down the street, or the cleaning lady, who can teach the most. “Those are people I learn a lot from, and they don’t have to be the mots famous person in the world.”
“Have you had the chance to buy yourself anything special? Like a big-ticket item?”
“Hm… I don’t know.”
“Like a car?”
“Nooo. No, because there’s a car that we won on ‘American Idol.'”
“Do you still have that car?”
“Yeah! It still works! I wouldn’t have bought a car like that by myself, so I think it’s a… it’s been a good blessing having that car. … I probably spent the most money on flights to places, but what’s interesting is a lot of those flights have been going back home when I have a few days off. … That’s helped me value home more, and value my family. I think I definitely took my family for granted, and home, and the simple things. And it’s amazing how much I love those simple things.” He said he wants to be a part of his brother and sisters’ growth and they grow up. He doesn’t want to be the brother who was only there a little bit. “I want them to feel like ‘my brother was there for me.'”
How would it have been for him to go through AI with J-Lo and Stephen Tyler as judges?
“It would’ve been different, because people are really paying attention to what the judges say, so it’ll be interesting to see the kind of technique that Stephen Tyler and J-Lo judge and what their opinions are going to be like, because it really does influence what people are going to think of your performance.” He thinks Simon had a lot of influence. “I think J-Lo’s very talented. She’s very experienced. She’s worked hard. She came from, you know, the Bronx … and she’s made a really great career for herself, and she’s also Hispanic, which I think is great. It’s awesome to bring a bit of that into ‘American Idol.’ And Stephen Tyler is a legend.”
THE END!

Oh my Methinks a stylist is afoot ! GAH ! Jean jacket indeed.
Today I played some of the snippets for the lady of the house where I was working. (She loved his CFTH which I had gifted her last Christmas.) She said she liked what she heard as I played them. Then asked if he was coming around here to sing. Then I showed her a few pics from my phone of the CD cover and some face shots. She remarked, “Oh my he is surely a handsome MAN now!” I asked her to pick up his Cd at target when she goes there for supplies for me. She assured me she wants to hear the whole thing. I love her for that.

TOSOD cd arrived in the mail today from amazon.com. Luckily I swung by the mailbox before the school bus delivered my son. I was able to meet the bus with the sun roof open and TOSOD blaring full volume/bass thumpin’. Just for added effect I waved the cd insert poster out the sunroof. Little A and Something ‘Bout Love and I drove a victory lap around the block. It was a joyous day!
Now, tomorrow, we’ll both go get fitted for hearing aids! Soooo worth it IMHO.

awww betsy, gosh loved, loved your recap and so thankful you went for it and didn’t listen to any crazy gremlins.
Especially loved the part about the people gravitating toward his voice during soundcheck; and then your thought about him being used as a measuring stick, showing girls about the respect they deserve… one of the most touching, reverant things I have ever read written about him, and a sentiment I will never ever forget.
Jen A, LOL! am still waaaiting for my CD/DVD order, so I blasted my StR mp3 from Grand Rapids, with my windows down too!
dja, no DVD yet but can’t wait. I think he likes us to believe he’s awkward around females, but I’m not buying it… and am quite positive he has had enough female attention in his life equal to that of oh, say 10,000 men or so.

I’m not buying it either. He has never seemed the least bit awkward in my presence and though at my age I may not qualify as a “female” to a 19 year old, I have seen him interact with young women. He was always completely at his ease and in control. I think he genuinely thinks what he’d like us to think, but he is so mistaken.

‘Elevator’…I believe that it was the ultimate fabulous performance of Elevator because he did not have the mic. pressed to his lips and his hands were both free to become completely involved in his wonderful performance. SF had mentioned awhile ago (if I remember correctly) that it would be good to see him use a head mic. and “the proof is in the pudding!” Or…”All the proof of a pudding is in the eating (1605). For David, “The proof of his magnificent singing is in his voice”.

I’ve got my DVR programmed to tape Regis & Kelly tomorrow and I only hope I can get through the long day tomorrow. Thank Heavens I have my iPod with TOSOD to make my day a little easier to bare until I get home.
Emmegirl,
One observation about the “Behind the scenes for the photo shoot”, (from the DVD in the Fan Pac)looked to me like David was having a blast with all the women there and the women were lapping it up & David was being a bit of a flirt! Does he even realize it? I wonder. He sure didn’t act awkward at all with those women at the photo shoot! In fact, looked to me like he was loving all the attention! 😀
Anyway, I loved all the screen caps, videos & interviews from today, but now I must go to bed. Good night!

“Today, David Archuleta released his new album entitled ”The Other Side of Down.” In addition to his new album, Archuleta’s best selling book, Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance, was released earlier this year. A young adult who is not yet even 20 years old, really cannot ask for more.
Ever since competing for the top prize on American Idol, Archuleta has had one of the biggest fans bases of any contestant on the show. Archuleta is the epitome of a class act, and no amount of success will make him forget his loyal fans. In fact, Archuleta tells us that he is amazed by his fans and is speechless when they approach him and tell him the impact he has had on their lives.”

I also thought that David did so well on the Regis show The leather jacket always looks great on him. I wish that he would wear it more often. I don’t remember him ever wearing a leather jacket on stage. Maybe he gets too hot in it or maybe he’s afraid of looking too hawt. I was sooooo excited when Regis said that he would be singing another song and then it turned out to be my favorite. Happy dance until they cut David off just when he was building to the best part. Oh well. Maybe the audience will go out and buy the album so they can hear the rest?
I can’t get over David’s performance of “Elevator” on Z100. I didn’t particulary care for that song until I heard him sing it on the radio. Now, I am gaw gaw over it. I just get chills listening it over and over. just WOW!!!
What exciting times we are experiencing with David again. Love him!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is an interesting write up regarding David and wikipedia.
10.06.10 – 10:30AM – by Daniel D’Addario
David Archuleta, Wikipedia’s Most-Edited Music Star, and Either a Tenor or Baritone
David Archuleta, American Idol runner-up in 2008, has become in 2010 the subject of a Wikipedia free-for-all, where the facts of his personal history and his career are up for grabs. On the “most edited pages” list for Wikipedia articles, his article sits at #91 – very high for an artist who’s been on the scene for two years, especially as Michael Jackson is #115, Barack Obama is #110, and Lady Gaga falls outside the top 5,000.
Yes, young David – only 19, though soon, perhaps, even that will come up for debate – is the object of much Wikipedia speculation. While many of his entry’s edits are minor, some questions arise again and again.
“He sings in the baritone range. But thank you for the input. =)”
Is Archuleta a baritone, for instance? Or a tenor? The nation had perhaps moved on, but Wikipedia’s speculation on Archuleta’s Talk page gives an idea of the uncertainty that persisted throughout the spring of 2009. Users Aznality and Greg D. Barnes – with some interlopers – exchanged some tough talk and posturing about who knew music better. It all began on February 12, 2009, when Aznality declared, “Archuleta is Baritone, not Tenor. I’m positive about it.”
He should have known that simply declaring knowledge, even about so cherished a subject as one’s favorite teen singer, wasn’t enough for Wikipedia, and Greg D. Barnes put him in his place sharply, six days later: “Tenor. But I won’t add it until I find a source.” And then it was on, in a fight fueled by claims of expertise and studded with passive-aggressive emoticons. Aznality said a day later:
What makes you think he is a tenor? Doesn’t require a source in my opinion. Just ask musical experts. On idol, I’ve never heard him go higher than a G4 (C5 to be considered a tenor). He sings in the baritone range. But thank you for the input. =)
Keep in mind that Archuleta’s Idol season was by then a year removed.
Archuleta-tenor-gate had many twists in loyalties: Greg D. Barnes, in an unsigned comment, abandoned his need for sourcing and embraced random speculation. “David is 18-not at his vocal peak. By the time he’s in his 20’s I’m sure he could hit C5. Anyway in OPERA you do need to hit C5. This is POP music–a little different.” Banjeboi, an editor of Wikipedia unable to detect sarcasm in print, provided a link to a Vulture article that speculated about Archuleta’s “little-heard raspy baritone” on a rap album. By the time the conversation tapered out, Greg D. Barnes was posting fan-made videos “so user Aznality could see that he could sing a C5.” Barnes had won, anyway – Archuleta is cross-referenced under “American tenors,” though neither the word “tenor” nor “baritone” is to be found elsewhere on his page.
Is he Honduran, or is he Basque?
Nationality Debate
The vocal-type debate has been settled between Barnes and Aznality, but there’s always something new to debate in Archuleta fandom. The ethnicity debate is a perennial: unsigned or –sourced comments haunt the Talk page; a section headed with “Where Is His Honduran Nacionalty” declares: “Is Unfair that Only Put His United States Nacionality!!!!!” And then there are the even-more-explicit fans: an unsigned comment from October 2, 2010 asks the Wikipedia editors to do advance work on Archuleta’s new album, The Other Side of Down:
Hi. It’s October 2010. When was his main/cover picture taken? lol I like this picture and it should be kept in the article, but since a new album release is in, well a matter of days, a new picture(s) would make this even better. Thanks!
Confidential to Wikipedia reader at IP address 147.226.192.81 – the most satisfying edit is the one you make yourself! In August 2009, a user edited the Talk page section “WHAT?!!!!!!!!GAY???” The change they made? “I ANNA KNOW HIM MORE JUST ABOUT HIS PERSONALITY AND HIS REAL IDENTITY…………………” became “I WANNA,” etc. The rest remained the same, though it’s since all been deleted.
Occupation: Singer-songwriter, student, and boyfriend.
Perhaps this is just the new way fandom is expressed. In the absence of sourcing – which is to say, in the absence of much serious media coverage – Archuleta fans are creating their own reality, a world of debate that brings them closer to their idol, and their idol closer to the center of the web. Jenny Haley, a writer for Fansofdavid.com, indicated that the debates are just ways of showing love: “I believe that any hard-core Archie knows what comprises David’s ethnicity (his mother is Honduran, and as his career unfolds, he has been identifying more and more with his Hispanic roots) and whether or not he is a tenor or baritone (David is definitely closer to tenor, but his voice encompasses such an amazing range, the question of classification is really inconsequential).” It’s all sound and fury – signifying that, at least on Wikipedia, Archuleta’s the most important man in music.

Jim Cantiello’s Review of TOSOD
David Archuleta’s Other Side Of Down Doesn’t Ignore ‘Rough Patches’
‘I want people to know that you don’t have to stay in that place,’ he tells MTV News.
By Jim Cantiello (@jambajim)
David Archuleta has high hopes for his new CD, The Other Side of Down. It’s not to launch another successful radio smash, à la “Crush” in 2008. It’s not to sell another gold record. Although, let’s face it, those achievements would be nice to repeat.

Instead, Archuleta hopes The Other Side of Down will help people through the dark times of life by admitting that, yup, even the adorable, giggly, happy-go-lucky “American Idol” runner-up gets supremely bummed out sometimes.
“No one goes through life just smooth sailing, coasting,” Archuleta told MTV News. “Everyone has those rough patches, and so I don’t want to ignore them and act like everything’s hunky-dory, but I do feel like … there’s always something to be happy and grateful about no matter what you’re going through.”
That’s not to say Archuleta’s album is filled with mopey, “woe is me” ballads. In fact, anytime the pop star found his songwriting going to a dark place, he switched gears. “I wanted to look at it from a different perspective,” Archuleta said. “It’s like, ‘Yes, I do feel a little confused and it can be a little frustrating, but things will be OK.’ I want people to know that you don’t have to stay in that place, and I feel like sometimes people get stuck there so much. I wanted to get people out of there with this album.”
His “don’t give up” attitude is reflected all over The Other Side of Down, from the self-questioning “Who I Am” to the choir-enhanced “Things Are Gonna Get Better.” Even Archie’s infectious single “Elevator” has the 19-year-old taking a dream about a girl as an opportunity to wax poetically about the ups and downs of growing pains. It’s a message all the more eerily prescient given the recent onslaught of teen suicides.
“I’ve been getting a couple letters about bullying and stuff,” the soft-spoken singer said. “It’s interesting how that issue’s come up again. But I think that’s why it’s important to surround yourself with good friends too. I think they can really help you get that support, and they don’t always have to be the most popular kids. … You just need good people who have a good heart and care about you. That’s what matters.”
The Other Side of Down arrived in stores Tuesday (October 5).

David is getting so good at interviews without loosing his honesty and humility…amazing.
NeonLimelight Interview: David Archuleta: Young, Talented, And The Other Side Of Dorky
Many American Idol finalists fizzle out into obscurity after releasing their debut album. Not David Archuleta. The 19-year-old fresh-faced, golden-voiced crooner enjoyed a successful co-headlining tour with Disney darling Demi Lovato, made our Christmas a bit more melodic with the release of his Christmas From The Heart album and accompanying tour, released his memoirs, Chord of Strength, which prompted a nation-wide book tour, and became an ambassador for Stand Up 2 Cancer.
There’s no stopping Archie now. On Tuesday, October 5, David released The Other Side Of Down, his long-awaited sophomore album. This time around, Archuleta got more involved in the creative process, co-writing 10 of its 12 tracks, and experimented vocally.
The self-proclaimed dork says he wanted to show a different side of himself on this album: a fun, goofy side. The album captures his youthful exuberance in songs about love, strength, and positivity; all things his fans have come to know and love him for.
David is the other side of dorky; his self-awareness and honesty (and did we mention tremendous talent?) is what makes him cool.
We caught up with David by phone on his album release day to talk about his new album, how he’s grown as a songwriter and vocalist, why it’s OK to be dorky, and the tragedy of teen bullying.
Neon Limelight: It’s album release day!
David Archuleta: Yeah! It is!
NL: How are you celebrating?
DA: I guess I’m celebrating by talking to a bunch of people. [laughs] Interviews and chats and things like that.
NL: Do you have any plans to do a little partying tonight? How would you celebrate if you weren’t doing interviews and everything?
DA: I don’t know. I guess we’re not really celebrating in any way. Maybe we’ll go out to dinner, but I think it’s a pretty busy day.
NL: Awesome! We really loved your first album, but we’re really happy that on The Other Side Of Down you’re playing with songs that are a little more your age. Was that on purpose when you started the record?
DA: I didn’t really try to put a certain age on any of the songs, really. It was really just about what felt appropriate. How can the music compliment whatever story’s being told and what’s being said. That was the main focus. This is my last year as a teenager, so this is my last chance to do something and say, you know, I’m a teenage. So, I wanted to make sure that it was still youthful but not like in a childish way. I still wanted it to have some sort of substance to it. I think there’s a good balance with it.
NL: Definitely. You have such a knack for making music that kind of crosses the age barrier.
DA: Aww, thanks!
NL: Are you mindful of how far your demographic reaches when you get into the studio?
DA: The mindset I always keep is ‘keep things universal.’ It doesn’t matter who is gonna automatically listen to it without a doubt or anything. I’m thinking of who is gonna start listening to the music — who could potentially start listening. I try to make sure the music doesn’t have boundaries — as few boundaries as possibly at least. I want all kinds of people to listen to it. I don’t want it to be targeted toward a certain audience just because they’re the buying audience or anything like that. Everyone listens to music and everyone can be affected by it. That’s what I try to keep in mind.
NL: So, we spoke to your songwriting friend Priscilla Renea not too long ago.
DA: Ooooh!
NL: And she was just absolutely smitten with you.
DA: Really? Aww.
NL: Yes! She was very, very impressed with you as a songwriter. How would you say your songwriting has evolved from the first album? You’ve gotten really involved in the whole lyric process this time around.
DA: You know, I’ve never been good with words. I’ve gotten a lot better now, especially after interviews and writing the book and things like that. I’ve gotten so much better. I guess that’s one of the biggest things I’ve improved on in the last couple of years. But it was a real challenge, but at the same time, it was cool being able to say, ‘OK, I have control over what’s going to be said and what I’m going to talk about.’ There was such freedom in knowing that. It just opened my eyes. I can choose what I can say and what I’m going to sing about! I don’t have to just say, ‘well, here’s a song and I like the music, but I don’t like the words.’ Or ‘Oh, OK. This is a good enough song and I guess if I just think of it this way then I can connect to the song.’ Like, no. I have control. This is my music. This is MY album! I have a say! [laughs] And that’s something I had to figure out and kind of push for. So, it’s been amazing getting to be involved in the lyrics and the words and the stories, because the music kind of tells a story by itself too.
NL: Awesome! That’s a really great way to look at it. It’s your album. You should have the say over everything, all of the words, so it can connect with you and then we can connect with it.
DA: Yeah. That’s the goal. [laughs]
NL: She was also impressed with the subjects you choose to write about. It’s not about, and I’m quoting her loosely, ‘Ooh baby, I wanna kiss you.’ It’s inspirational.
DA: [lots of laughs]
NL: Why do you lean towards inspirational songs over making, I guess you could say, dirty love songs like other artists your age?
DA: [still laughing]… I guess I just want people to feel good. I want people to feel better. I don’t want to do anything that would be degrading to someone else or make anyone feel awkward or feel a way I don’t want them to feel. I just want people to feel happy. I’m a pretty — I guess I keep a pretty clean image with the way I act. I try to keep track of that. I don’t want to have to sing about those kinds of things just because that’s how the song is or that’s how it goes. That’s not the kind of person I am. I don’t feel very comfortable with that kind of stuff. I wanted to focus on things that I could really be comfortable with and that I could really relate to as a person. I want the songs, when people listen to it, I want them to identify with me as a person and as an artist and who I am and relate to that. I want my music, again, to just have a kind of universal outreach. There are a lot of younger kids who listen to my music. I don’t want to leave them out. And there are a lot of older people as well. I just want to make sure that everyone can relate to the music.
NL: Just listening to some of the songs on The Other Side of Down, you play a little bit more with your voice and its different tones and ranges. How do you think your voice as grown since your first album?
DA: Yeah. You know, it’s interesting. I had different influences this time. In the beginning, I was really listening to a lot of Adele, A Fine Frenzy, Imogen Heap, and, of course, Natasha Bedingfield, and Jason Mraz. I guess the things that you’re listening to have a big impact on the way you’re thinking subconsciously. It made me want to experiment a little bit with my voice and see what can I do, how can I make it sound. Different textures of your voice bring out a different kind of emotion and make people think of it differently and gives it a different personality. It was really fun getting to try different things instead of singing everything the same way. I kind of wanted to show a more fun, lighthearted side, so I naturally sang things a different way, especially based on the different quirky influences that I had in mind.
NL: What song would you say gives the best vocal performance on the album?
DA: Aaahh [laughs]. In what way? Technically? Emotionally?
NL: Any way that you feel is the best vocal performance. We love when you belt it out–
DA: That’s what’s really interesting. I didn’t do anything [on this album] that was about belting it out. I guess there are certain parts of songs where I do, but there wasn’t a song that really focused on that because I kind of wanted to focus on personality and just try something a little different. But there’s a song called — there are two songs for me that were emotionally…I was more emotionally involved when I was singing them. There’s one called “Good Place” that I think shows a lot of range. I sing the verses in my lower register and then the choruses are more powerful. It just really had the space for me to pour out what I was feeling at the time and the feeling that’s in the song, and let me kind of dig into that a lot. I feel like the emotion is very present and transparent in that song. And then another one which kind of has that sensitivity and just really allowed me to feel was “My Kind Of Perfect.” It was just very honest. I guess what allowed it to really be apparent was the honesty of those songs and how personal they were to me.
NL: You’ve said a lot in interviews about The Other Side of Down that it’s sort of a dorky, quirky album.
DA: [laugh] Yeah.
NL: That’s so relatable to other people. When did you decide to embrace your inner dork?
DA: I kind of always did that. I try to always be real and honest with myself and say, ‘David, you’re not the coolest person out there.’ [laughs] So why act and pretend like it? I didn’t want to be like, ‘Well, I’m gonna act like I’m cool and try to convince people!’ It’s like, I’m just not into that because that’s not who I am. I didn’t want to be a different person on stage and on the camera versus off camera. I just couldn’t do that. It was too hard for me. It’s like, who am I kidding? I’m a weird person…I’m goofy. And I’m awkward! [laughs] I can’t hide that! It’s always been hard to convince myself of anything other than reality. This is reality, I’m a dork. So, I wanted to be who I was in my music. I wanted to be honest and I wanted to be real, because I felt like that would be the best way for people to connect with the songs. So I really just let that lighthearted personality, that fun, goofy side of me to just come out with this album. It was just a different side of me, because I could be more serious too, but that’s the part of David I wanted to show this time.
NL: You say you’re a dork, but I know a lot of your fans find dorky sexy.
DA: [laugh] Oh, no! I don’t know about that!
NL: You’ve been able to embrace your quirks and differences and have a lot of fans to give you the affirmation that it’s OK, and you’ve also been good about dealing with it by yourself. But there’s a lot about teen bullying in the news right now. How do you feel about that and what would you say to that kid who is a little different, is a little dorky and feels alone?
DA: I think it’s so weird that that’s been coming up again for some reason. It’s interesting because the last few letters I’ve been getting over the last month have been about bullying. I don’t know if there’s a focus on it right now and I don’t know what’s going on.
I know sometimes it makes people feel like they have power and authority over something…bullying someone and degrading someone makes them feel better, makes them feel like ‘this person is lower than me and I’m going to show that to them,’ but I feel like we’re all on even ground. We all have our imperfections. We all have things that are going on. If someone looks differently or believes differently or acts differently…I feel there’s always something good about someone. There’s always something inside of someone. I usually like to talk to [the people getting bullied]. Usually these are the people that people sort of look past. There’s usually something about them, like a hidden gem. I know that sounds kind of cheesy. There’s always something about someone that people don’t know about and they’re usually really cool. And all you have to do is talk to them and ask them and say ‘how are you doing’ and ‘what kind of things are you interested in?’ There’s always a light inside of someone.
For the people who are dealing with that stuff, I…it can be difficult. There were times when I got picked on. You just have to focus on the good friends you may have around you. Sometimes I think people can overlook that because they focus so much on the people who are degrading them and making fun of them, bullying them, and giving them a hard time. People usually have someone there. I hope people don’t forget that. Don’t overlook the good because of the bad. There are always good friends there and you just have to look out for them. And maybe you need to reach out to them, too. Maybe the people that are close and can be there for you, you’re ignoring.
Some of the good people for me were willing to say hi and how are you even though I was quiet. I was a quiet, shy person in junior high, and the good friends that I had were willing to look past that and say ‘there’s something different in David that maybe other people aren’t seeing and I want to get to know him and find out about him.’ And they’re still some of my really good friends and they’re the ones who have always been there. I don’t know. I guess I’m over-talking.
NL: No! Everything you said is so true and it was a great answer.
DA: Well, thank you! [laughs]

David Archuleta seems to have made a career of coming in second place. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After the fan favorite was voted runner-up on Season 7 of “American Idol,” his self-titled 2008 debut album entered the charts at No. 2. For his second, non-holiday full-length, “The Other Side of Down,” the 19-year-old assumes more responsibility, writing or co-writing 10 out of the 12 tunes. If you’re over 25, this disc may not resonate, but younger listeners will undoubtedly respond to the explosive chorus of “Something ‘Bout Love,” the acoustic guitar-driven “Elevator” (about—you guessed it—life’s ups and downs), the driving “Stomping the Roses,” and a title track that sounds like something Kelly Clarkson might’ve recorded if Archie hadn’t beaten her to it.

I screamed so loud that I asked in my house, gladys happens to you?? try to speak ….. but no sound came out.
thanks david

Gladys, I heard him say hi to you. That was so exciting! He really noticed people in different countries and there were quite a few people from around the world.

Trying to catch up again. David’s R&K appearance was perfect. He seems so comfortable with them and you can tell they love him to death. His song performances were perfection, and at that time of the morning, nothing short of amazing…but what’s new.
Just love love this feel good album which is exactly what I needed on the drive home from work today.
It totally lifts my mood,(good news for those at home.)

Just listened & watched the chat with David. So much fun! He is something else! I just can’t get over how no matter what artist he’s asked about, he knows them & the songs they sing, then he sings a snippet of a song by the artist!! Any artist..current or not..doesn’t matter. He’s familiar with them all AND their songs. Amazing!
Thank you for all the videos & photos posted for those of us who have to work & have no access to the Internet or the daytime TV shows. My DVR did not record R&K for some reason, so I really appreciate being able to watch here what I’m missing while at work. 😀
It doesn’t look like The Wendy Williams Show airs here, or at least I can’t find a listing. 😦
Anyway, I’m still listening almost non-stop to TOSOD & know most of the songs by heart and I’m finding that when I’m not listening to TOSOD, I’m humming or thinking of one or another of the songs. 😀
Good night!
Dear David, Buenas Noches! Sleep well with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always! God Bless & keep you in his care.

Gladys! You’re the “Gladys he said Hi to?! Of course! How many Gladys’ from Argentina could there be, right?
You must be on Cloud Nine and he has no idea how much a “HI” from him means! 😆
Sweet Dreams, Gladys!

Dear David,
Please, please do the chats again. We love them!
He’s so multi-faceted; laid-back, light-hearted, good-natured, fun-loving…his love of life is contagious! One hour went by like it was one minute!
Glady~~I jumped for joy when he said your name. Happy Birthday, Gladys! How’s that for a birthday gift? 😉
