The King is Dead, Long Live the King
Posted by djafan on Tuesday, September 14, 2010
I arrived home Monday about 3pm and after unpacking and making supper, the exhaustion from all the sensory overload set in. In short, I fell asleep and awoke a few hours ago to a late start on my recap. But I will try my best to get this all down so bear with me.
After posting my squeee on the site, I drove the hour and a half to meet LuvieD, aka bizemom43 whose tweets you may have seen from the concert. Ordinarily a very health conscious, nurturing soccer mom, I arrived at her home at 7:30 am to find her, like any self-respecting woman with ODD and a concert to get to, feeding her children a breakfast of microwave popcorn. “Popcorn for breakfast?” I asked. She was unapologetic. “It’s a vegetable, isn’t it? Besides, they asked for it and it’s fast.”
That made perfectly good sense to me, so we loaded up her car with my stuff and the GPS, and were off for Memphis or bust! She has been my long-time concert buddy and you have no idea how invaluable a satellite guidance system is to us while traveling. Even with the GPS lady’s help, we managed to get lost several times between the hotel and the fair less than a mile away. Bwahahaaa! We are hilarious. If only someone would follow us around with a camera, we could be a reality show called,
“Lost. Again.”
So we get to Memphis at noon and finally make it to the fair at 2pm. Naturally we make a bee-line for the Firm Mattress Main Stage where David will be that evening. The stage was outside and there were rows of chairs set back about thirty feet from the stage. Several folks had already staked out chairs on the front row and had been there since noon! We found us a couple of front row seats too and started mingling. What a lovely bunch of people David’s fans are! It’s like you never meet a stranger who has ODD. Some had come from a long way off. Anyway, we talked to Paula FOD. She had won a VIP with David and talked to us about being afraid of crying when she saw him because she so wanted to be able to tell him how she felt and what his music and fans had done for her. She teared up while talking to us about it which was not encouraging to her resolve! We promised to say a little prayer for her and later we read that she did just fine! We also met and spoke at length with the amazing videographer, 8thRowCenter, who I liked very much. I liked everyone we met in fact and won’t name them all but it was a real treat to once again get to talk with David’s fans because they are all so positive and just good folks.
So there we sat in the hot Memphis sun and took turns leaving to get something to eat or drink or walk around the fair while others watched our seats and likewise. We forgot to bring sunscreen and noticed several folks were using umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun. They told us they bought them at the fair for five dollars so bizemom left to go buy one for her and me.
I
A little while later he came on stage to do sound check and was so sweet and then came Alexis’ set. Everyone sat politely in their chairs and she was quite good but when, toward the end of her performance, she mentioned that David would be there soon, many in the crowd moved from chairs to the barricades three feet from the stage. Biz and I made it to the rail at the very front and stood there with the others guarding our spot for an hour till David arrived. It was an acoustic set, just David accompanied by Mike on guitar. He sang only one song on keyboard, “Crush,” but when he first sat down to play, the keyboard didn’t work so while two men came to investigate the trouble, he stood back up. I was close enough to hear him say to Mike, “Just play anything,” and Mike at once started the first notes of “Somebody Out There.” David sang it like it was all carefully planned and rehearsed when it was totally impromptu. Throughout the entire show, there was nothing to interfere with the perfect instrument of his voice, which was as lovely and sublime as a symphony. It was acoustic perfection from start to the beautiful, poignant finish of “God Bless America.” I was able to see for myself at last the new charm and confidence in his stage presence and in his performance. Maybe it was the spirit of Elvis in the air but he often said, “Thank you very much,” and laughed at himself for saying it so much. The crowd was large and very excited, there was so much screaming! I have never heard a more excited crowd and at one point the mosh pit got a little crazy where we were standing against the rail. He decided to do “Touch My Hand” after the 16 year old birthday girl asked if she could touch his hand. There was so much reaching and shoving of people to get to him when he reached out at times during the song that the movable barricade we were standing against began to give way. We were slightly to the left of center stage and you can see him at one point on the video reach out and then make a gesture with his hand for the crowd to back up. A security guard came and stood in front of our barricade and held onto it while pushing against the stage to hold the barricade up against the onslaught of the pushing crowd. I put my hand on his shoulder and pushed against him to keep upright and he let me. I really think if not for that, the barricade would have given way and those on the front would have been trampled by the enthusiastic, screaming crowd. I wasn’t really afraid, just very aware of the situation. Nothing took away from the enjoyment of his performance. Even the excitement from the crowd was an adrenalin rush that only added to the whole, awesome experience. It was pure, intense joy, all of it and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
After the show, there were so many armed guards keeping the crowd at bay and at last he was hurried past a screaming crowd to a waiting golf cart where large guards sat on either side, him wedged between them, and two more rode up front. I think the Ferris wheel ride took place after the fair closed at 10pm because I don’t see how it could have happened otherwise. It was clear from the mannerisms of the sheriffs and guards that they had a situation on their hands and I don’t think anyone was prepared for it. Of course David smiled and waved at the fans from between the guards and seemed perfectly serene and appreciative of all the love.
I am glad the label was with him. If there was ever any uncertainty about the South’s love for David Archuleta, that myth was put to rest on a warm September night in Memphis.

Fantastic re-cap, Angelica. I felt as though I was right there with you. The mosh pit experience sounded a bit daunting but, otherwise, heavenly. Thrilled that you got a hug from him and I imagine those previous no-hug statements were words you were more than happy to “eat”.

I felt this way when I saw David up close at the booksigning last June. How can a man be so beautiful? And yet he is. Blows my mind.
I’m glad that your entire experience went so well…the show, meeting David, meeting the fans, and that you arrived there and back home safely, despite your “Lost. Again.” reality show! LOL
So there’s hope for a hug for me, too? 😉 I’m one of those silly people who would never ask for hug because idk maybe it feels like begging. But now that you did it with np, hmmm.

“I was able to see for myself at last the new charm and confidence in his stage presence and in his performance.”
Isn’t it something to behold? It is so visible on the videos, his comfort on stage and with his loving audiences. He continues to surprise and amaze at every step he takes. I’m so glad you went and got a hug…lol, but after witnessing this who wouldn’t?
“Those jewel-like, sparkling eyes framed by thick, jet black lashes against a complexion the color of which is indescribable: fair without being pale and suffused with daylight while surrounded by hair the color of the darkest night.”
I think someday you’ll have to write that Elven king story.

New pic on AOL’s description of “Elevator”
Courtesy of JIVE
American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, graces us with ‘Elevator,’ yet another hot single from his upcoming album, ‘The Other Side of Down,’ out Oct. 5.
Driven by an acoustic-laden guitar melody and catchy percussion, Archuleta sings of pursuing one’s dreams and accepting the journey — not always knowing the outcome: “It’s an endless ride / Sometimes it takes you up / Sometimes it tears you down inside / But it’s the butterflies / That keep you feeling so alive, so alive.”
The uptempo track was co-penned by Archuleta and his guitarist, Mike Krompass. To hear ‘Elevator,’ which follows Archuleta’s lead-off single, ‘Something ‘Bout Love,’ head over to AOL Radio’s New Pop First station.

Angelica, nice recap. What non-fans don’t realize is that going to see David live is not just about the performance. The experience begins the second you wake up and realize that you are going to actually see him. It’s an all day “high”, whether it’s a concert, a book signing, a CD signing, etc. No amount of travel, standing, waiting, or lousy weather
dampens the quality of the experience one bit. It’s always a completely satisfying experience that you can’t wait to repeat.
I’ve been amazed at some of the travel experiences other fans have told me or I’ve read about (like yours right here). I’ll never complain again about my little trip in from New Jersey to see David after hearing stories about driving through blizzards, hundreds of miles, etc. to see David.
The title of this article is spot on. David has worked through the kinks in his confidence and is now the rightful heir to Elvis and Michael Jackson. He owns every stage he walks on, and, without a trace of self importance, takes his adoring audience anywhere he wants them to go with a smile, a look, and of course, a voice to which none other can be compared.

So frustrated! I wrong a super long comment about the recap and then somehow deleted it when I tried to post it. GRRRRR Awesome recap Angelica. You have such a gift with your writing. I felt like I was there with you, and the way you describe how David looked that day is just sublime. It always amazes me that in person he looks different and even more beautiful than photos can capture. His hair never looks as coal black or his eyes as lovely and heavily lashed in photos.
It’s so sweet that he asked you your name. He could just as easily have taken the card, said thanks, and kept walking. And yay for you getting a hug! I’ve always said that I don’t want one, but I’m starting to reconsider. Seems like it’s worth the embarrassment/discomfort of asking. Us Northeasterners tend to not be very touchy/feely so it’s a hard hurdle for me to overcome. Maybe next time if I ever get another opportunity. 🙂
So glad to hear that the Memphis crowd loved him! It certainly looked as if he owned the stage that night. I’m glad that the day was so perfect for you. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and experience.

Wow! Angelica what an exciting time for you and bizemom! Your re-cap had me right there at your side (probably not eating the fried grease tho’). I’m afraid I would have been afraid at the barricade–being short brings with it some innate fears. Thank goodness the guard was a nice guy and let you brace yourself. Your description of David’s physical beauty that afternoon swallowed me up as I read it. I could almost feel his gentle hug and see his genuine smile. Good job Lady Eagle Eyes for spotting him when no one else did and for following thru on your promptings! I’m so glad you had a laughing, getting lost, eating fried fair food, talking to and touching David, listening to The Voice, good time. It’s good to have you back safe and sound.

Angelica, Thank you for your brilliant recap of the concert. I liked all the details. I could tell from the videos that David was more comfortable than I had ever seen in the past. I don’t know what’s happened to make this concert so relazed for him but he was certainly enjoying his fans. You don’t think that hug before the concert had anything to do with it, do you? Haha
Why so many armed security around David? I don’t recall David having to be that protected anywhere else in the U.S. Was the fair grounds in a rough neighborhood?
I could see a reality show starring you. A camera could follow your activities concerning this site, your concert attendance, your interaction with David, your interaction with fellow fans on site and off and anything else you’re not telling us about that would make it even more delicious. You have the fun personality for it and I would certainly watch along with a million others, I am sure. What would we call it? {:D

Just loved this recap! Every time I know I’m going to see him there are days of little sleep and preparations and general “high” that just barely stays under control. Wasting time just
Going mindless
Watching your charades
When you were younger
Did it occur to you
Ten years from then
You’d act the same age?

“Among the ordinary people that surrounded him, he seemed the only thing real. He was beautiful. He was so utterly, enchantingly, beautiful up close it was unreal and more real than anything or anyone else. It is so strange and hard to describe.”
It’s so true, being in his presence is surreal. Nothing & no one else matters but David & those few minutes, or seconds spent with him.
I’m another one who could never bring myself to ask for a hug. Even after so many close encounters with David, it was enough to just hold his hand for a few seconds…but asking for a hug…maybe someday cause as they say…”never say never”. 😉
I just got back from vacation with no access to the Internet by choice. I cannot tell you how happy I was to come here to catch up on the David happenings, then to read your recap & the way you felt which is so clear it makes me wish I had been there too! Thank you!
I also just listened to David’s radio interview the following morning after the concert & I just loved listening to David’s husky & smooth morning talking voice. 😀
Now I have to go back & review everything David did while I was out of the loop. It’s a good thing I was having such a great time with my sister’s, otherwise I would have been out of my mind thinking about what I was most likely missing, & OMG, did I miss alot! 😆

Abrra, I was also taken with the image of David in his suitcoat in the elevator….can’t quite put my finger on why….I think it’s because it looks like his age could be 13 or 30.

The artistry of this video is most enjoyable, appearing to be fun like in the days of the Beatles in so many ways. We have seen too little of the actual happenings behind the scenes.

It’s hypnotic, that voice.
I was lucky enough that my David hug kind of just happened, but I can assure you that I have no qualms about asking for a David one armed hug…lol because being in his presence is surreal indeed, unexplainable.
Palm, it looks like Katie Moore is a professional. I wonder if we’re just seeing snippets of footage taken because then SB might be on to something.
“The artistry of this video is most enjoyable, appearing to be fun like in the days of the Beatles in so many ways. We have seen too little of the actual happenings behind the scenes.”
Wouldn’t it be out of this world if they are recording behind the scenes footage for a future DVD release? David is into keeping a journal, history of his life he said in the something pitchy interview, so it would in the realm of possibilities that he is keeping video of all that’s happening to him. Ok I’m rambling here…just getting a little excited…lol

Stomping the Roses is really catchy and I like the lyrics. Can’t wait till October 5th!
That vimeo video from the fair made me giddy with happiness for him! It was just so great getting to see what went on after he went into the room through the curtain while we stood outside. He seemed in that video overwhelmed by the reception the crowd had just given him and so happy!
I watched him go into the room behind the curtain after high fiving everyone. Then the crowd (which included Biz and I) followed right behind him into the lobby there but some teens were still screaming and the guards got nervous and told everyone to clear the building cause he wasn’t coming back out. Most of the crowd went back outside. But Biz and I knew better than to believe that malarkey. The guards weren’t hanging around that curtain and the doorway to the outside for nothing. So instead of leaving, we just nonchalantly lounged against the glass wall to the left of the room he entered. The sheriffs and security guards kept watching us but made no move to throw us out. We were deep in a conversation, initiated by Biz, which went something like this. I was a little slow on the uptake.
Biz: So are you attending the Red Hat Club luncheon this month?
Me: Huh?
Biz: The Red Hat Club luncheon *spoken louder with rolling eyes*
Me: What are you talking about? What Red Hat Club?
Biz: The Red Hat Club Luncheon where everyone has to wear a red hat? Don’t turn around!!
Me: Hah?
Biz: I’m trying to act like we don’t care about who just went in that room so they will let us stay here. (this said through tight lips in a hushed voice)
Me: Can I wear roses on my red hat?
Biz: You can wear anything you want on it as long as it’s red. Do you know what hat I think would look good on you?
Me: No.
Biz: A red kid’s cowboy hat.
Me: 😯
Biz: Seriously.
Me: Can I wear roses on it?
They let us two crazy women who were soOo not interested in anything but our next Red Hat Club meeting stay right where we were and in a little while, out comes David right past us, smiling on his way to the golf cart. 😆

I hate that we didn’t meet. I think I even saw you but I didn’t know it was you! But when you talked about giving David the card it clicked in my memory. My niece and I got there just after noon so we spent all day soaking in the sun in front of that stage lol.
I saw when the van pulled up with David but I was afraid to say anything. Afraid it wasn’t real. I’m kind of ridiculous. And then I saw his feet. I don’t know how I knew they were his feet since that’s all I could see from the other side of the van, but I did. And sure enough, there he was walking backstage. 🙂
We were extremely lucky to see him as he was leaving the park that night. He was gracious as ever and agreed happily to take pictures with my niece and I. I am always startled by how REAL — how solid — he feels when you stand beside him. Is that strange? It’s like he should be some whisp of an amazing dream you once had.
An amazing night. Thank you again for putting it to words so beautifully.

I know I just kind of “imagine” David (as an Elven king) and even tho’ I know he is real, he really isn’t real until I meet him, and hopefully, get to actually touch him–be it a handshake or a hug. It seems kind of weird to think of in that way. Even now, it’s only been 3 months since I saw David, and he is now the Elven king that I am again waiting to meet to make him real again. I know, I’m dorky, but that’s how it is for me.

He has such a PULL. It can’t really even be explained with words. People are just drawn to him. The crowd is Memphis sure was. It was such a diverse crowd — male, female, young, old but all drawn together under this spell and united in their appreciation of David.
I never know what to say to him and have never talked myself into asking for a hug. But when he puts his hand on your back for a picture…and you put your hand on his back in response…it’s like a hug for shy people lolol. Probably as close as I’ll ever get to a hug.
My niece did ask for a hug — a request which David granted cheerfully. He is such a giver of joy in so many big and little ways.

David Archuleta — “Other Side Of Down”
Forget Kelly and Carrie — Billboard magazine’s 2010 reader poll declared David Archuleta the best American Idol ever. His sophomore CD, “Other Side of Down,” is another wholesome pop record showing off his powerhouse vocals. Archuleta described it as “about moving forward in life, making progress in accomplishing your goals and dreams while appreciating what life has given you.” (Oct. 5)

Hi everybody~
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your well wishes. I really appreciate it. I am hoping for a speedy recovery after the surgery. There WILL be a TOSOD tour coming up afterall! One leg or two, I WILL be there, “Put one foot in front of the other..na na na nothings gonna break my stride” as the man himself sings.. 🙂
I have a lot to catch up on since the Six Flags injury and the sudden and unexpected passing of my Dad 3 days later. Life is tough at times but being surrounded by family and friends, near and far, has been a tremendous support at such a difficult time. And then there is the voice of an angel who knows how to touch us just when we need it the most. There are no words to describe what I felt when David sang TAGGB on the MDA telethon. I was blown away. Then he did it again with his impromptu SOT in Memphis. He makes my heart smile. God Bless Him.
So now I shall journey back a week or two and catch up on all the amazing articles, comments and recaps as you all make me smile too..{{Hugs}}to all~
Angelica~ You are too funny.. “I don’t hug and tell”..LOL..I think if you put that red hat on, roses and all, you may just “squeee and spill” 😉 I loved your recap!

Angelica, congratulations on the superb write up of your day/evening in Memphis with David. I had to read it a couple of times, just to soak it all in. We all LOVE living vicariously with all the fans of David who are so blessed to see and experience him live!! I am feeling particularly blessed right now because I will be sitting at David’s table at the Mentor’s International charity event in SLC on Oct. 8th. (Shawna wants me to send to The Voice my write up of the experiences that opened this special door for me—it is kinda long, so I don’t know…) But I do have to pinch myself everyday with this reality.
I loved the story about your hug from David. When I got my hug from David I wasn’t so bold as to ask him directly for one. I turned around after the VIP picture in Las Vegas last year and said, “oh, I forgot, I promised my seven daughters I would give you a hug from them.” lol He smiled and gave me a big hug. Well, they really would want to hug him, I promise!!
Angelica, you are so gifted in your descriptive writing that there are phrases in your write-up that are so beautiful in describing David and his essence that I had to print it out so I can read it again and again, “Among the ordinary people that surrounded him, he seemed the only thing real. He was beautiful. He was so utterly, enchantingly, beautiful up close it was unreal and more real than anything or anyone else.” *sighs* Or how about, “Those jewel like, sparkling eyes framed by thick, jet black lashes against a complexion the color of which is indescribable: fair without being pale, and suffused with daylight while surrounded by hair the color of the darkest night.” Wow, really?? How do you do it? What a gift!
Thank you for taking the time to remember so well and describe so perfectly.
DJxox, my love to you and your family. Heal physically and emotionally very soon, please. God be with you.
Sorry this is so long, love you all.

We (my family) love to follow tennis (especially RAFA hoot hoot RAFA!!), so we watched David Cook’s performance of “America the Beautiful” at the US Open men’s final. This, of course, let me to relisten to our David’s US Open performance last year at the women’s final. When I scrolled down, I saw for the first time a video called “My Reaction To David Archuleta Singing At US Open”. It is way cute, and it sure reminded me of someone I know, (now who could that be,,,) listening last year. I don’t know how to bring it over here. Could someone do that for me?

From Idolater:
David Archuleta Previews New Track “Stomping The Roses” In His Video Blog
As he did last week, the generous angel of music known as David Archuleta previewed two songs from his album The Other Side Of Down in a video blog on his official website. Jump below to check out Archie discussing the back story behind writing “Something ‘Bout Love“, and listen to a preview of the totally new, never-heard-before track “Stomping The Roses” while David takes a touristy horsey ride around Central Park! Giddyup!
“Something ‘Bout Love”, claims Archie, was written while up on a rooftop, with “pigeons as company.”
The upbeat, cheery tune “Stomping The Roses” actually started off with a beautiful piano melody, but David explains none of the 88 keys made it into the cut of the finished track.
The Other Side Of Down drops October 5, as though you don’t already have that day furiously circled in red on your calendar.

#127 I like that picture of David and Jennette. They look good together.
Anyway, I don’t know what to do with myself. I will always love and support David, don’t get me wrong. But I’m feeling like the stars are not quite lining up with this second pop album. I maybe worrying way too much about nothing. I think it’s because I don’t know what to think with this music business thing. SBL is a great song and I loved it right away but it has not picked up steam since a few weeks ago. And now the next single Elevator is released and I don’t think it’s that great of a song, but what do I know. Maybe I don’t know what’s good for radio and what’s not.
I really, really hope and pray that Elevator will do much better than SBL. I would be very sad to see 2 singles of his that would never get a day in the top 40 sun. I also hope and pray that he will have a band performing with him in these gigs he is doing. These acoustic shows don’t have the “wow!” effect for me. Just David’s voice isn’t doing it for me with these mid tempo songs. (Please Jive, pay for a band.) I don’t want to say this but I have to be honest. The songs seem to fall in the category of “not as memorable” and the fact that he seems to have a hard time hitting those high notes is emphasized without the backing of a band. I can see tomatoes flying in my direction. So sorry but I have to voice this frustration I have with whoever is responsible for these gigs. Please provide the band, I beg you.
I don’t know. Why am I so worried about a 19 year old’s career in music? I think it’s because I love him and I really, really want him to succeed. Yes, my ODD is off the wall. I wished I never have this ailment but there is no escaping it. I will always love David until the day I die.

I will ‘Trust the Archuleta” on the way this album is being handled. Things have changed in how music is promoted and sold. There is little that makes sense here. Making a video for a song that isn’t being called a single? This may explain why David was not talking about the song in glowing terms. It seems to be one of the parts to the whole album, not the feature. Very confusing. He is doing things his way by having Elevator promoted as the first single. He is learning the business. We may not agree on what is happening, but in the end talent will win out. David has a broad range of styles. Whether radio stations get him and will play his music is debatable. He needs a “hit” that they can grab onto for replays.
I don’t worry that he has no band for the “radio” promotional appearances. Notice I didn’t say “shows”. Think back to when the first CD was promoted, he was going to all the radio stations there was only him and his keyboard. That’s how it’s done.
I know one thing to be true, David loves to sing. He loves being with fans. Some singers do not become radio hit makers, they tour and sing to fans. CFTH CD proves this point. That was purely for the fans, and we supported the tour in droves. I will support David in his career unconditionally.
Things Are gonna Get Better

I suppose it’s just natural for us to have some concerns when things don’t progress just the way we think they should, eg. the apparent non-full-acceptance of SBL by those who make decisions about radio-play. I love the song – the melody, the lyrics and the message – so it is indeed difficult for me to understand why it did not grab on. As to the SBL video, I do have a problem with it. I know it has been very well and sensibly analyzed with attention to every nuance and detail. Somehow, I don’t enjoy watching it. I bought the MV on iTunes (along with several audios) but don’t watch it. I do however play the audio because I love the song. I’m uncomfortable watching the MV – I have a problem with whatever they did with David’s hair (it’s just not him) – I have a problem with David through it all not smiling, in fact he appeared glum (that’s not him either) even though the song is uplifting with a positive message. As well, I think about the day the video was shot – outdoors in Los Angeles, 100 degrees, working from early morning until late at night – I just keep feeling bad for all those involved, professional as they are.
Moving on, I love Elevator and oh my, I hope it does exceptionally well – David’s favourite on the album. It seems to be making a very favourable impression with DJ’s and reviewers so that does bode well. Why isn’t it on iTunes? What a video it would make – can’t even imagine the fascinating and fun scenarios (well, some fans are already coming up with ideas).
I’m so impressed with the Central Park promo videos – what an original and fun concept. Kudos to David or those who came up with it. Such a happy David that we cannot keep from smiling while watching – and again we hear him say ‘life is good’!
We still have more snippets to listen to and I am hoping for a ballad or two or three. Nobody can sing a ballad the way David can. Just before midnight on November 10/08 (release date was the 11th) when his first album was downloaded on iTunes, I was breathless and in tears listening to TBWY and You Can. Those songs were sung so beautifully and poignantly. I kept returning to them and listening until the wee hours. I’ll be thrilled to do that again on October 5th.
Bottom line – yes, Abrra, we should trust The Archuleta – David is everywhere these days and I’m looking forward to his influence being felt even more by everyone in and out of the industry. His talent is unstoppable – he is just simply a musical genius. We are so lucky!

#121 This is in response to Mandi’s concerns that are all ligitimate and ones that we have felt on any given day. We don’t have the answers either.
After I saw the MTV awards, an answer came to me, helping just a little more to understand David’s chosen career path.
When I saw Lady Gaga draped in real meat as her costume and heard her excuse that she needed help to stand because she never thought that she would win anything, I realized that I don’t want David and his magnificent musical talents to be anywhere near the fabircations, cheapness and madness that has been created in the name of entertainment.
To me they are not good company to be a part of. Justin Bieber being interviewed the other day by Ellen kept saying the only thing that he could and that the particular person in their conversation was “hot”, “she’s hot”. He was cute maybe but he was out of line and slow down people, this is becoming trashy.
What clearly is the music scene today comprised of and is there another way to sing to the masses? I believe so and it isn’t with Rhinna’s/ Emenen’s song with violence included or Gaga’s degrading outfits.
Hold on tight, he means it because he will get there, but not the way that these stars are. I think that they are desperate to find a way to shock people and how sad is that really when musicality is the key ingredient to lasting success?

I LOVE that HAIR!!!!! See my avatar? The day the “red pants” photo showed up, I was on the phone to Bebe and djafan talking incoherently about how much I loved that hair did. To me it gives David a more mature look. His face framed by that hair is very smexy! All the months of “what will I do with my hair’ was worth it when this was the result. I always knew a stylist would give him a great look for his photo shoot. Just look at this and tell me his hair is unattractive.
GAH!!!

I don’t know much about the current business of radio promo. I only remember how things used to be in “the olden days” when new artists would practically beg to have their songs played on radio. Aside from the TV shows “American Bandstand” and “Soul Train”, radio was the only vehicle used to get their songs heard. There was no Internet with AOL Radio, nor was there MTV or VH1 back then.
Things have changed. Presently, there are very successful artists whose songs are not played on radio such as Jason Mraz, Josh Groban et al. It appears that artists no longer have to depend on radio play to ensure that their career progresses. They depend more on album sales and concert ticket sales.
David is different than most artists. His voice is pure; he barely if at all, needs instrumentation behind it. He sings clean lyrics that send a message. He will not compromise his values and cave in to what sells, namely shock.
Shock sells. That’s why Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert sell. That’s why songs with profanity sell. Radio may not be ready for a David Archuleta. That might be why “Something ‘Bout Love” isn’t getting as much radio time as we’d like. It’s not shocking enough. It’s not shocking at all. It’s a song about wholesome values, and about doing what’s right, and it’s universal theme of love might not be shocking enough for current radio.
Enter “Elevator”, another wholesome song with no profanity, except that this time it’s catching on. It’s not shocking but it is quirky; it’s out of the ordinary. It’s different and because of this, it’s getting the attention of DJs.
If that’s what works, I’m okay with it. As much as I love SBL and still expect it to go multi-platinum, as long as David is singing and making music I won’t labor over what isn’t. I trust him and will do my best to promote his music and will support his career, unconditionally.

Mandi, “I don’t know. Why am I so worried about a 19 year old’s career in music? I think it’s because I love him and I really, really want him to succeed. Yes, my ODD is off the wall. I wished I never have this ailment but there is no escaping it. I will always love David until the day I die.”
Your concern is coming from a good place. I’ve made a conscious decision not to worry, do I get frustrated at times? Oh yes, I wonder why do they do the things they do, I just don’t understand. I’ve been listening to the radio just to hear David sing SBL and E, I love them both for different reasons. But this so called music that they’re playing is shameful IMO. It confuses the heck out of me on why they won’t play David. I don’t know if it’s because it’s wholesome, they keep playing Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars at least every hour and I’m sick of it, but it is a clean song and they play it. In other words I’m confused by it all.
As much as I want everyone to fall in love with David like we have, I don’t know how one doesn’t..lol I have to recognize that David trusts God and his gut and doesn’t appear to be to concerned I’ll take his lead.
Just watch the video link above, all your worries will be washed away. 🙂

David Archuleta
By: ALYSSA MCKENDRICK
Bucks County Courier Times
“But I know this crush ain’t going away.” – David Archuleta, “Crush”
So it seems for all of the girls screaming: “We love you, Archie!”
Since finishing second on the seventh season of “American Idol” in 2008, David Archuleta, 19, has done concerts tours and has even written his own book, “Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song and the Power of Perseverance!”
Archuleta has recently finished recording his new album, “The Other Side of Down,” which will be in stores Oct. 5.
I had the chance to chat with him for a few minutes before he helped rock the house at the kickoff for the US Open at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day in August.
Q: Why did you decide you wanted to be involved with Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day?
A: I actually got to come to the US Open last year, too, which was fun. It’s always great to do events that encourage family things. I think it’s great to see kids and their parents come out to the event and find something in common that they all enjoy and want to celebrate. People can enjoy the music – but at the same time, tennis – and kicking off the US Open.
Q: Do you have any advice for kids who want to pursue music?
A: Keep going for it. So many people feel like dreams are impossible and are not likely to happen. That’s not the case, though that’s what the world wants you to believe. People can be afraid themselves to do what they want, but you can really make a great impact if you follow what your heart wants you to do. You can also see how it affects other people, too. Don’t be afraid to take a risk.
Q: What is the biggest thing you have learned from your experience on “American Idol?”
A: That you shouldn’t say you can’t do something without trying it out. At first, I never thought I could do any of this. I tried it, and worked really hard, and surprised myself. You should always go for new challenges. If you are willing to work hard for something and feel passionate about it, you can surprise yourself.
Q: What are three things you always have with you on tour?
A: My phone, my journal and my computer.
Q: What is one song your never get sick of singing live?
A: I love singing “Angles” by Robbie Williams. It’s a great song to cover, and one of my songs on the new album “The Other Side of Down.”
Q: How would you describe your new album?
A: I feel like it’s a lot more of me this time. The music + I am still experimenting with, like the pop styles and sounds. The messages that the songs are talking about are definitely more of who I am.
Q: Can we expect a new tour soon?
A: Yes, with the new album, there will be a tour in the future. We are going to be setting it up soon and I’ll let everyone know when the tour will start.

I am loving Davids hair right now.especially in those fabulous pics posted here at #37!!! (Personally, I liked how it looked in the video, I love seeing his forehead.)
134. Bebereader…I totally agree with all 6 paragraphs you just wrote.
sure seems like we heard a lot more artists on the radio back in the 60’s then we do now. Now it’s the same ‘handful’ of artists, played over and over again.
Current radio seems to be ‘locked in’ to a mere handful of artists with crappy voices, that all sound the same,or talentless little twits who haven’t reached puberty but have been pimped out to the public as the most talented people on the planet.I think David’s talent scares them.and it scares the people who are making money off ‘pretend’ artists.
Frustrating as it is, their time in the limelight will be short lived. David will become one of the greats. He’s honing his craft, putting one foot in front of the other. And we’ve all got his back.

But somehow it knocked me off my feet,
But I know better than to let it get the best of me,
I could give up, I could stay stuck, I could move on,

Singer/Songwriter Priscilla Renea Talks About Working With “Sweetest, Nicest” David Archuleta http://bit.ly/9nmfUW
2 minutes ago via twitterfeed
Singer/songwriter Priscilla Renea has worked with a long list of musical artists, but when she began working with American Idol alum and Neon Limelight fav David Archuleta on his sophomore album, The Other Side Of Down, she noticed something special about the 19-year-old. “He’s one of the ones that kind of was like, even though he’s been through the whole American Idol thing and he had all this fame when he was 16 years old, he’s still the sweetest, nicest person,” she told NeonLimelight.com in a telephone interview.
Priscilla, who released her debut album, Jukebox, last year, found that the early fame didn’t blind Archie’s vision for his album or change who he is as a person. “We were in the studio and things were going slow, and he was like, ‘Why are we wasting all this money, you know we could go write songs in the car.’ And that’s the type of writer that you kind of gravitate towards because he hasn’t gotten lost in it.”
“He just loves to sing, that’s his thing,” she continued. “He has a beautiful voice and he loves to sing.”
She was also impressed with the topics David chose to sing about. Instead of looking to get raunchy as he matures in the business, he’s keen on promoting positivity. Priscilla adds: “He doesn’t really like to talk about ‘Ooh girl, I wanna kiss you.’ You know that type of typical stuff. He likes to talk about life and things that will make people wanna get up and do something.”
She describes the songs they worked on together as “touching, moving songs.” “More like a pop/Josh Groban type of thing,” she told us.
So true Priscilla Renea!!!

I was thinking while watching David’s impromptu singing which simply blew me away, that he should really try not to use the hand mic & maybe try one of those clip-on mics for his tour. Seeing him use both his hands, snapping his fingers & moving his hands while singing…well, wow! Just wow! And besides, we can’t see his beautiful face when he has the hand mic up against his it. Thinking of David just letting go while singing the songs he wrote straight from his heart, moving around the stage unencumbered by a hand mic…wow! And maybe David will, whether he wants to or not because it comes naturally, give us some Latino dance moves which he obviously can do. 😉
I can understand now why the writers who collaborate with David were blown away, per their tweets, during their writing sessions. If David just bursts out singing his ideas like he did in that video, how could they not be in complete awe of David’s genius. He is unreal!
As for David’s hair, it has never looked better. The thing I noticed immediately in the SBL video that there was something “off” about his face. David has perfect facial features, eyes, nose, lips, chin, cheeks & framed by perfect eyebrows, not too thin & not too full. IMO that was it..his eyebrows don’t look natural, they look darker & fuller. Was not that big a deal. He still looked great in the video, & David seemed to be happy with it didn’t he? Or was the release of SBL as the first single & the making of the video a compromise with TPTB at Jive in order to get the songs HE wanted on the album?? We will never know, not from David. But I can see David compromising instead of being difficult to work with. He has too much class. Curiously, he does seem much more excited about “Elevator” though. I am VERY anxious for Oct 5th. I love “Things Are Gonna Get Better”, I think I will love “Stomping The Roses” & I KNOW I will love the title song “The Other Side Of Down”, just based on the snippets. 😀

Didn’t realize he was home schooled until 9th grade.
It’s easy to forget that he only went to high school for 2 1/2 years – has had to grow up in a hurry. Kinda wish he could have had a little more time to just be a kid.
That said, my guess is if you asked him he would say he wouldn’t change a thing, things happen for a reason. 🙂

I agree with SF–if he didn’t have to hold that mic–Lord help us all– I have secretly been waiting for him to drop it one of these days–the way he switches back and forth between hands so fast –and I swear at least 20 times in any given song–I’m tellin ya it’s going to happen! Skydancer#141 We’re on the same ticket. David is unstoppable, his progress in the industry may be slow and steady, but he’s moving at his own pace and in the right direction.
SandyBeaches#145 I love when people in the industry get David. Pricilla Rhea sure gets him and realizes how special he is. I hope one of the songs they collaborated on made it to TOSOD.
Silverfox#146 You have a point about David not using the standard mic when performing. His body language changes while singing without a mic. Very interesting. Like you, I also noticed that his eyebrows looked a little darker than usual in the photoshoot pics. I guess they were going for a dark, brooding look. But it would have worked without darkening his eyebrows, too.
I just posted this on snowangelz, regarding today’s video and thought I’d bring it home.
“I cannot watch this video without smiling! 😀
I’ve been a fan of music forever but have never seen anything like this! This is an artist who is so in tune with his fans; from connecting with the audience when he sings to tweeting to giving high fives to a line of waiting fans to staying up until all hours reading AND responding to fan mail to wearing gifts fans give him to epic vlogs and phone messages…and now this–answering questions from fans on video, including an impromptu song! This guy is too much! What a privilege to be his fan!”

SF,
I hadn’t thought of that, no mic in his hand during his performances, he wouldn’t be able to contain himself! Somehow we should suggest it to him, anyone have any ideas?
It’s the eyebrows, that’s what looks different! I really enjoy SBL, the song and video, your right SF David will never tell how it went down. He did what he needed to do. I’m just so happy that he seems so satisfied with the album and he is so excited for us to hear “his” songs and with all the songs and snippets I’ve heard so far I more than love it already.
SB, Priscella Rena gave us such a wonderful glimpse of how David works. My heart could explode with admiration and pride.
Emmegirl,
“That said, my guess is if you asked him he would say he wouldn’t change a thing, things happen for a reason. :)”
I believe your right, he wouldn’t change a thing. He’s living his dream.
Skydancer, David or someone is coming up with these genius ideas to present his music and to endear us more with him with these videos being released to us a bit at a time, as if we’re not already OTT for him.
Going to watch some more.

Abrra, Thanks for posting that video. It really tugged at my heart.
David: It kind of put me in a down kind of mood, just because I didn’t, I felt like I wasn’t really good at anything else, so I just thought well, wells OK, singing is what I can do, I guess, but then,it felt like that was taken away from me so I felt like, what am I supposed to do now? I felt like the one thing I was, I could be useful with, was not there anymore, so…I was like, what good am I right now? But I just tried to work hard in school and get good grades and…
Brian: It all ended up working out, right? You’re fine today..
David: Yeah, pretty much, I guess. You know I went into the doctor and they said my vocal cord learned to work around the other one so..
Brian: Cool.
David: So it’s like Oh, wow, so they said it was just very fortunate that it worked out the way it did and that my voice was, my vocal cord was able to work around the weaker one.
I just can not bring myself to worry about David’s career because there is a frequency greater than radio waves working in him and FOR him that will bring to pass his ultimate success in due time.
How long and what form that success will take, I don’t know. Success means different things to different people. If radio today is not ready for David, then maybe it’s not good enough for him. It is NOT the fault of dj’s that they are limited to playing a handful of the same artists. Don’t you think they get sick of listening to it too? Much of radio fare is a dung heap and if David rises to the top of that, where is he?
Consider this:
David will succeed but it may not be by the ordinary route. There is a higher road that leads to success and he will find his own way to reach it.
Fact:
Alison Krauss has won 27 Grammys. More than any other female artist in history. Sans radio play. I’d say that’s a fair amount of success by anyone’s standards.

Maybe we just need to ‘let it be’.
‘Elevator’, is the newest single from David’s album. The song was written quickly following a dream one night. In the dream, David was on an elevator riding up and down stopping off at different floors while different management teams came into his view. At this particular time, David was in the midst of acquiring new management and the decision must have been weighing rather heavily on his mind, so what came to him in that dream was the “Elevator”.
When Paul McCartney was asked about his inspiration for the song “Let It Be” he said that it came to him after a dream that he had about his mother. Many believe that the song has religious connotations but according to Paul the mother Mary lyric refers to his mother. He claims that the dream came to him during a stressed period in his life and his mother told him, “It will be alright, just let it be.”
Ah, the greats, that is how they do it. Live, love, laugh, sleep, dream and write mega hits in the morning.

Knee update~ Good news/bad news, Part of the tear can be reapired with sutures and part of the meniscus will have to removed…blahh! I am focusing on the good part.. More good news is that the knee is very healthy and that should help with the recovery and make the surgery less complicated.. : smile: … and it is NOT my driving leg so I can still drive when needed *coughtoDAconcertscough* after some recovery time.. 🙂 Surgery to come in the next few weeks as I begged for some time to catch up at home before I am off my feet. It cost me an injection to the knee, but it was worth it.
..and correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t all the chocolate ice cream you can eat while listeneg to the new David Archuleta CD on replay thru super-uber awesome earbuds the recommened treatment for knee surgery??? Works for me!
Loving all the pics and postings, he sure is a very busy young man. The expression on his face listening to those 2 young girls is the real deal. How does one have their ENTIRE face twinkle?? I hope vid of the girls reation to hearing him sing to them surfaces soon >> priceless.

btw~ the wailing in the acoustic My Hands followed by the GROWL…. OH MY!! 😯 I immediately thought of you and was hoping you did not have a mouth full of Dr.Pepper at the time..LOL huh?

“..and correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t all the chocolate ice cream you can eat while listeneg to the new David Archuleta CD on replay thru super-uber awesome earbuds the recommened treatment for knee surgery??? Works for me!”
You are exactly correct and on the right track for a full and speedy recovery post knee surgery. I have taken the liberty of preparing a prescription for you.

Djxox…I knew that you were hurt, but not as badly as you are. I am like the ‘little drummer boy’ (we are getting close to Christmas and carols by David) and I have little to give to you, but we will be nearby when you are healing your knee. I am certain that we can entertain you, it is the least that we can do while we enjoy David’s music of course. For more laughs (that help to heal), we will have The Voice Unplugged get-togethers whenever Bebe gives us notice (which is usually after something exciting happens) or when we simply need a night of ‘David in concert’!
Until then, 😉

I found this tonight in a Nashville online review mentioning David. examioner.com Nashville
Comments:
.2 weeks ago. What a classy young man! Can sing with any age, genre….
.2 weeks ago. I can’t wait to hear Orla and David’s Silent Night. I know it will be beautiful.
.1 week ago. Where’s David?
.1 week ago. Really looking forward to watching the show on TV…The Pat -A-Pan duet will be beautiful. So glad that David was asked to be a guest. He’s simply a class act!
.1 week ago. Orla has an angelic voice and David restrained his powerhouse to match Orla’s voice. What a duet. Heavenly.
.1 week ago. I’ve always enjoyed listening to the Celtic Women. This performance was extra special because David Archuleta and his terrific VOICE added such a nice touch to the show. I can’t wait to hear this performance in November and will definately be purchasing the DVD.
.1 week ago. I’m looking forward to hearing the blending of David Archuleta’s fabulous voice with the lovely ones of Orla Fallon and Meav. From all accounts, I understand it was a captivating evening. I can’t wait to watch the special on PBS!
Just a little inside info. from Nashville.

I have to write it again 😉
“David ‘restrained his powerhouse’ to match Orla’s voice.” We have never IMM (in my memory), called his voice a powerhouse and that has been a definate faux pas.

Been gone all day doing family stuff, but thinking about The Voice at the same time. I missed everyone! ODD withdrawal, ya think?
SB#168 “Ah, the greats, that is how they do it. Live, love, laugh, sleep, dream and write mega hits in the morning.” <<< I just loved this, SandyBeaches! And I have a feeling there's a lot of truth in that line!
Betsy#174 Thanks for taking us back to Ford Day! That "Imagine" has always been one of my favorites.
Hey Djxox is back! haha Great to hear from you!
"Bebe~ I could feel the NY moment in your recap as only a NY’er could. I loved it! So did you get a NY knish?? The best ever!
btw~ the wailing in the acoustic My Hands followed by the GROWL…. OH MY!! 😯 I immediately thought of you…"
haha No potato knish that day at Arthur Ashe. Water was barely affordable at $5 a bottle! But who needed food anyway? Was waiting until you noticed the archuwail and archugrowl in My Hands/Memphis! Unbelievable, huh? 😉
SB#191 Thanks for bringing over the comments from Nashville. Waiting impatiently for Thanksgiving, not so much for the turkey but for the entertainment. I'm getting used to David entertaining us every Thanksgiving, last year at the ice skating show and this year from Nashville. Epic is the word!

SB, Love your post #168!!
And thanks for the Nashville reviews! Can you believe WE were there? And can you believe once we got in the theater & in our seats, we didn’t even think of checking how we “looked”? After all, we could be on TV! All we were thinking about was hearing The Voice again at last! We were so giddy with excitement and David did not disappoint. Even enjoyed watching David interact with his fans during the break. What I can’t believe is that we didn’t go up to David to congratulate & thank him for his mind-blowing performance when we had the chance! What was up with that? 😆

Well SF, there is a lot that I can’t believe now that you mention it! Big mistake to not check in the mirror. I just read that the afternoon taping was for the singers, the first of the eveniong was for the audience and so on. I remember when the camera was right in front of us by about three feet and stayed there…wow, this could be less than awesome!
Sadly enough we did not go and congratulate him. ;(
I just stood back and watched him with fans I believe had never approached him before and were so excited to be meeting him. My father was always involved in music as it was his career and when I went to a concert with him, it was polite to stay and congratulate, give a handshake to and speak with the artist. I will never miss that again.

Dear djxox~ note to self…TYPO MUCH??? sheesh.. I had a least 2 or 3 or ten more than TOfans “askfgjlsdhlalkdfjalaasdlkkfj” LOL… blame it on the meds 😉
Angelica~ I am soooo bringing that RX to my Ortho.. and then I shall reveal to him it was a David Archuleta/Flo Rida concert I was “reliving my youth at” as he put it…LOL…I am going for the double eyebrow raise to go along with his chuckles. He has already called me a “pip” and then he stuck a needle in me…an I squeaked, so I guess that makes me an official “pip-squeak” !! I am a dork, I know..
River~ I guess you could say I was in adrenaline overdrive with a lil bit of Irish thrown in. I knew it was bad but I was not about to leave. You should be glad you were not in the car when I saw him at the gas station on the way home. It was the quickest spontaneous U-turn I have ever made. Safely of course! But I did give you a scare with the bus in Providence..haha. 🙂 I will be in touch soon.

Djxox, can just see it…tires squealing and smokin’, as the sedan makes a deft illegal, but safe, u-turn into the gas station. Onlookers see the occupants and assume it is an IBB (itty-bitty bladder), no one suspecting it is a DJA.

~Angelica..don’t know how I missed your recap until now but thoroughly enjoyed it. How wonderful that you had that very special moment with David & thanks for sharing it with us.
