This Time, It’s Personal

Posted by djafan on Wednesday, September 1, 2010

When David Archuleta cut his first CD during the demanding fifty-three show Idol tour, it was pretty much a corporate affair.  There was a minimum of input from him and precious little time to offer it up anyway.  Often he must have been given a song and expected to learn it quickly in order to get it recorded on his next rare day off.  In interviews promoting the album, he frequently injected the caveat that it was all done in a hurry.

Despite such time and artistic restraints, he delivered a jewel in the eponymous album, “David Archuleta,” which by the alchemy of exquisite vocals and ecstatic fans, was transmuted into gold shortly after its first single became platinum.

Fast forward to 2010 and a completely different scenario:  his new album titled “The Other Side of Down” was produced in a period of several months, months that were devoted almost entirely to its creation and are much the work of David himself.  Of the twelve songs that made the album, ten were written by him.

The release of his sophomore album on October 5th of this year may well presage a release of something more.  In performances of two preview songs that will be on the album, “Something ‘Bout Love” and “Elevator,” he has shown an expansion in confidence and a more liberal use of runs and vocal improvisations.  In these works he had a sizable hand in creating, we sense an unmistakable pride in ownership and a joy that comes from connecting deeply with his work.  These are songs that matter to him.  They are in a very real sense, his heart and soul laid bare, his unique, quirky personality, desires, and dreams exposed.  The act of creation is not reserved to procreation alone.  For an artist, his works are his children and the connection to them is very real and personal.

Those who have followed his career and attended his concerts know that besides his voice, David possesses another gift, equally extraordinary.  He has the ability to literally go into a song, tap into the emotion that lays beating at its core and convey that message back to the listener.

In a recent interview with Fox News he talked about writing his own songs and the importance of connecting to the music and ultimately, to the listener

“It’s made a really big difference in allowing myself to come through into the music and being able to talk about what is important to me and what I feel represents me…as an artist and as a person and…I feel like people will be able to connect a lot more with what I’m singing about because I’ll be able to connect to it.  I feel more like this means something to me and it’s my story and this is my personality and me that’s in here.”

In short, he will “tell it to us and make us understand” who he really is inside.  If the old saying, “to know him is to love him,” is true, then we must also understand this:  whatever release in artistic expression this means for David, there will be no release for us, his fans.

With the unveiling of his sophomore album and the tour to follow, we will find ourselves even more connected to him than we already are.

Angelica hi!~I love reading all your posts. I wanted to ask you a question. I saw David @ Pomona then later in the year Anaheim for CFTH. Did we talk each time? I had my perfume out & if it was you, I told you that it’s my special perfume I always wear when I get to see David. I think you liked it too. Anyway Angelica, you’re an excellent writer. Maybe we’ll see each other again. Looking forward to it! Really looking forward to David’s next tour and finally being able to listen to all those fabulous new songs!

A glowing article from Examiner.com on DA’s AAKD appearance

David Archuleta sings at the Arthur Ashe Kids Day: ‘American Idol’ contestant sounds awesome

August 30, 2010 — David Archuleta sang at the Arthur Ashe Kids Day in Flushing New York on Saturday. The event brought in kids from all over the community and gave Archuleta a chance to showcase new music from his upcoming album. The fans were delighted in hearing the new tunes and the new style.

If you think you have heard David Archuleta sing it all before, you need to hear how he sings at this performance at the Arthur Ashe Kids Day. He has got a strong new sound that is nothing like his previous performances on ‘American Idol’ and he definitely is far more confident than he has ever been – you can just see this on his set.

We definitely will be seeing more of David Archuleta when his new CD is released until next month. Until then take a peek at the video. It is absolutely delightful!

From the previous thread’s goodies I just gotta say:

He called his songs babies and cradled them. (thud)
He admitted he reads auras and looks into souls.(I knew it!!! and ruh-roh…)
He was brilliant in the Forbes interview. (yay!)

Angelica, please stop scaring me. More connected than we already are?

and Angelica, another thing – that pic up top of him singing…even his fingertips are sexy. What?? How on earth does he continue to get better looking? The Voice was enough. The sweet soul was enough. I fell in love with a shy youngster’s voice, then got to know his sweetness. Now he is a man, with a new confidence and ownership and new material and new distressed jeans, and a chiseled neck and face that holds that Voice. Not one part of this is fair. LOL

You know, this is exactly what we wanted for David. To do the album that HE wanted to do. I couldn’t be happier for him.
    And another thing.
Who does this? Who talks about connecting with people like he does? He never stops. He means it to his core.

“an aura is a field of subtle, luminous radiation supposedly surrounding a person or object”

    I’m seeing it.
    Love him dearly.

Thanks for that excellent write up on the AAKD from the Examiner. People are finally discovering the amazing performer he is NOW, not who they remember from AI.

Tawna21, it’s great to see the Teddy Bears singing their 1958 clssic again. I learned (or tried to learn) the Fox Trot to that song. BTW, the skinny guy playing the guitar is none other than Phil Spector, showing no signs of his musical genius or eventual raving lunacy. Alas, they were a “one hit wonder”, as were many artists of that era.

Angelica, you’re so right about this upcoming CD ushering in a new era of self examination and expression for David. If the first 2 songs that he’s shared with us are any indication (and they are) of what’s on this full CD, we’re in for a real humdinger. His first CD was thrown together to get it “out there” by Jive to cash in on David’s AI mega-popularity, and was still a fantastic CD. Given the time he’s had to work on this CD, along with his increased confidence and honing of his wonderful voice and performance skills, I cannot wait for this upcoming tour.

Also, thanks for putting my words under David’s handsome face on the home page. Any way that I can be associated with David is a pleasure and an honor.

Angelica, there is a look on his face when he said “the fans” that choked me up immediately. Earnest, real, vulnerable, honest – I don’t even know how to categorize it. All of the above?

When I edited, I deleted this, (didn’t want to speak for him) But I just read this quote on FOD..

“They [the songs on his new album] are like my babies. It’s very personal.”

It’s from the 6 Flags interview. I haven’t watched it yet and can’t at work but can’t wait!

What you notice first in a girl interview confirms that he does see into our souls.

Interview on Scene on 7 interview, David just tries to do what’s right, great example. It’s so interesting that David seems to be the go to guy regarding AI’s judges.

6FlagsTicket to Ride interview, David rocking his baby songs, tearing up again.

Angelica: As October 5 looms over our heads, the excitement about this new cd is getting stronger. In a recent interview in Greenville, someone asked David why it is that we never hear anything bad about him. He replied (paraphrased) that if you try to do what’s right and stay on track, you can’t go wrong. They also noted that he’s a happy person. He referred to the title “The Other Side of Down”. He couldn’t have picked a better title for this cd.

“Often he must have been given a song and expected to learn it quickly in order to get it recorded on his next rare day off.”

If songs like “Barriers” and “To Be With You” are any indication of David, learning a song quickly, I shudder to think of how these new songs will sound.

Here’s the Forbes interview again, because it demands multiple views:

BEBEREADER – for some reason I get choked up listening to that interview. From his soft statement of directness about pushing for more involvement in his craft and not to be known as AI runner-up all his life to what actually drives him… just shows why a whole bunch of us are in this for life.

JR: I totally agree. The Forbes interview showed a vulnerability that most artists will never let the public see. David thought about the question and by the look on his face, was sure of his reply. *choke*

I’m not 100% certain but it looks like The Forbes interview was done the same day as the Bookends book signing in NJ that I attended. I remember David said how overwhelmed he was at the size of the crowd lining the streets, waiting for him as his car pulled up. The hair, the shirt…See for yourself. The shirt shows up a little differently on camera. It’s striped.

    Angelica, great article, great title!

“He has the ability to literally go into a song, tap into the emotion that lays beating at its core and convey that message back to the listener” … a mystery how someone so young can do it so effectively.

A good example for me was “Longer” on AI. Not a song that I ever cared for much or really gave a second thought… and then he sat on that stool, kept it “simple” as they instructed him,(he said he had worked out and wanted to do a version similar to a Sara Bareilles)and sang a song about growing old together… for me, he gave that song a soul, he made me really listen to it for the first time – and he was 17.

Betsy, don’t know that I have ever heard another singer talk as much and as passionately about connecting and sharing as David.

This stood out for me because while David is self deprecating about his looks and the sound of his voice, he never negates the music or it’s power to connect. His pride for this album is evident in that he leaked some of the songs HIMSELF! He wants feedback and he sure got the response he was looking for.

On our way to check out a couple of things at the theatre…I hope that no one has any intentions of standing outside in the heat. We have to pick up the tickets at 6 and so on.

Yes, it was a wonderful discovery to hear David’s soundcheck because there are other theatres in arts building and we followd the sign. I thought that in the distance I heard a most familiar voice. Then he did a run that identified him and the song. I hope that they were over the moon when they listened to him because I think that I was for awhile.

Oh, I had a poor sleep and calls back and forth to family because we are in line for a direct hit from Earl, dang that Earl. Trying to get home earlier but I am ready to enjoy the moments.

You are one of the few I know who will be seeing David for the very first time in live concert. There is an excitement about that moment when he bounces onto the stage and waves at the crowd. Or when he is in place and the spotlight shines on him as he grips the microphone to sing the first note. The anticipation of that moment is what I wait for. I hope you capture your special moment and relive it many times over.

I have been trying to rest before the concert, but it is difficult to do that when you think that people as crazy as some of us, are probably lining up at the theatre on such a hot day.

I rode up and then down on the elevator with David’s dad today and we both spoke about how awesome the concert is going to be. A good chance to talk while riding the elevator!! Pat A Pan has been confirmed…

For me this is the ultimate experience with David. Several months ago I wrote the article “The Power of Passion and The Prayer” in which I said that it would be the finest moment for me to see David sing with Andrea Bocelli, but an ultimate experience just as grand is soon to take place here in Nashville. This is the magnificent, classical side of David’s music, the one that cannot be duplicated by anyone.

I am waiting for SF to arrive and then we will make the decision on just how crazy we are as fans and that means how early are we going to get in to the line. My husband has gone over to see what is going on there right now and if he calls we will be gone.

Oh my, this is so exciting. I will send along what I can as it happens.

David has mentioned how much more these songs for TOSOD are more him, in one interview he even says they’re like his babies as he pretended to cradle one. Your words are perfect. Listening to the new songs he’s performed have me at the edge of my seat waiting for October 5th, the anticipation for his new songs have me all in knots. And if that wasn’t enough we get a bubbletweet from the very playful Eman leaking a small clip of another David song. I’ve listened to it several times and that sound of his voice, that melody, those lyrics, there is something hauntingly beautiful just with that short clip. Claude Kelly also tweeted that this song is amazing. These next few weeks can’t go by fast enough.

    Hello everyone!

Just got home from Nashville. I’m feeling euphoric now as I usually do after seeing David perform live. But THIS..this was more than just a performance! This was something dreams are
made of. Indescribable. I can use every word used in all the highest accolades given David and it still would not describe what we witnessed last night. Something magical took place & David the Artist was elevated to another level. The audio tapes you heard just DO NOT do justice at all to David’s superd vocals or the way he first walked out on stage amid the mist surrounding the stage as Orla was playing the harp. The mist made their performance surreal, so moving & beautiful. For those who may have thought David is not the same league as Orla, this wonderfully talented & beautiful lady and that perhaps the bar was too high for David…let me just say, David met & surpassed the bar! Their voices complimented each other beautifully. It was amazing! And “Pat-A-Pan”..OMG! It was unreal. HE was unreal. Orla sang “background” on PAP & David’s voice was so powerful & strong. I think the adult audience, most of whom were there for Orla & Maev (they have very vocal & faithful fans) were struck dumb when this “little kid from a talent show” started singing in French..struck dumb that is, until they all stood up & cheered, giving David a standing-O! You can’t really get the full impact of how loud the cheers & applause were. The same for Memories of Christmas..just fabulous! The first taping, David was absolute PERFECTION. No “cut” from the director who could not believe, along with everyone else on stage & the crew backstage, the effect David was having on this “adult” audience. I don’t think he counted on three S/O’s & the sad part is…those very much deserved S/O’s may not make the TV broadcast. You see…the audience was directed to applaud many times BEFORE the show began which will be edited on to the final broadcast after each performance. This was Orla Fallon’s Special. She did not get a S/O until the end of the show. But it was HER show. I HOPE all of David’s performances on stage make the final edit for the TV broadcast, but due to time constraints, they may not. HOWEVER…this is PBS after all, so a DVD of the entire show will be available with a pledge of a million $…just kidding but honestly, David was worth that & more! Biased much, am I??? 😉

SB & I were in HEAVEN. This was truly a dream come true for us. We had a such a great time. There is nothing quite like spending an exquisite evening with a lovely friend listening to beautiful music by a beautiful artist with an exquisite voice we both love & adore like there’s no tomorrow! I’m sure SB will have a more eloquent & detailed recap when she gets home safe & sound hopefully before the hurricane reaches her area.

One more thing. I offered to give SB & hubby a lift to the airport & as we were waiting for my car to be brought out by the valet, who happens to walk over to a waiting limo on HIS way to the airport? Two guesses! 🙂 He shakes the valet’s hand & thanks him! How very polite & gracious he is! There is no other like David in the universe!

OK…I have to finish packing for my vacation to California tomorrow. Going to spend quality time with my sisters road tripping. No internet while I’m there. Can’t spend quality time with sisters if I’m surfing the net as I do here at home.

Sorry for the rambling & typos..as I said, I am totally on a euphoric high! 😀

Thank you for this site for making this a great place to read about David. I come and visit here everyday but don’t leave comments except a few times. Anyway, I am excited for David. This album is coming pretty soon–just a few more days, or less than a month! Are you guys excited or do you have butterflies in your stomach? Do you worry that you might not like a lot of the songs? I love SBL, by the way. I was a little sad that I didn’t like Elevator when I heard David sing it the first few times. I thought, why did he use such high notes in some parts which he knew he would have a hard time singing? I heard the studio version a couple of hours ago and have been replaying it over and over. I am liking it more and more but I have to admit that it took at least 10 replays before it’s stuck in my head. I could imagine myself driving on the freeway and blasting it on my stereo. Those snippets from last night are amazing, by the way. Can’t wait for the DVD. I will definitely get one, or more, when it comes out. I hope they use the Christmas special to raise funds for PBS. That would be awesome promotion for him. My thanks to the very devoted fans who go to these events and take videos to give us a glimpse of what it was like to be there. So thanks to my fellow David fans for life!

What a wonderful recap SF has written, it brought chills and misty eyes. To me that it the official recap and I will add, as you call it tidbits.

Some of the David that we saw last night, has never been seen and that is because of who he was on stage with. He captured my heart all over again if that is anything understandible. He shocked the producer, the choir, the orchestra and Orla when he walked out on stage and the audience erupted in applause. I wanted them to stop so that I could hear him sing!

In the finale, when they were in a straight line, there was a break when it was instrumental and Orla looked at him (as well as the others) to do something, like dance. He amused them all right with his little gig and dance moves of his own. Why were they looking towards him to dance? There will be fantastic material for some MGRs.

When everyone was on their feet for his standing O’s I looked around to see that the audience was comprised of 98% adults. This was a first for David, they loved him.

I have this small story to share:

MikeK pm’ed me last week or the other week, wanting to find out if I got the footage of the DJs’ reaction to Elevator. It would appear that the DJs went bonkers wherever they played it.

That would explain the early release of Elevator, prompted by the radio stations themselves. This bodes well for that single and the album then, woo-hoo! When DJs are excited for a song, they support it wholeheartedly.

Goodness David is generating fantastic impressions in both pop and classical sides of the market. Why the US music industry is so slow on the uptake is not entirely a mystery but definitely frustrating. This, from a fan million miles away but where he gets instant support. I think the Asian Archie contingent should focus on promoting him in China so we can approximate the size of the US/Canada market. Oh, excuse my ramblin…

Thanks JR (and others)for your concern. It was never really any threat after about 10 am here where I am in Massachusetts. The outer islands got some heavy rain and wind. We got a downpour at noon, then it stopped. Earl was a wimp! 😉

Silverfox#182: Was so happy to see your recap; I love to read your take on everything David. Last night, when SandyBeaches said that you and she “can’t even describe this right now” I knew you were experiencing something very special. Thanks for your detailed account of last night; we can never get too many details! Now the long wait for the show to be aired on PBS. At least we won’t have to wait for Christmas since rumor has it that it will be aired on Thanksgiving. Last year, David was on TV on Thanksgiving Day, too. Have a great vacation and safe travels.

Dak#205 “Oh, what a night early September back in 2010. What a David –what a night.” <<< That be true! By the way, I love that song by The Four Seasons!

#JR#208 I like the way you think!

SB…I remember him doing a sort of jig on one of the behind the scenes icarly’s from his appearance there and have been looking for it like a crazy woman! I’ll keep on trying…lol

JR, really interesting the reaction of the dj’s, I for one don’t get them. Elevator is a great quirky catchy song and I’m loving it. Something Bout Love is equally good and I wish they would play it. Both of these songs are tons better than the so called music being played on radio. Irregardless you’re right, he could sing any genre beautifully.

SB, Glad you and SF were representing!

JR,”why the US music industry is so slow on the uptake is not entirely a mystery but definitely frustrating.”

… do not get me started on “pop culture” in this country.
It makes my blood boil and my head want to explode!

Dakgal, yep, I went back for seconds thirds and fourths.

To those who seldom post that peeked in today…nice to see you all. Don’t be a stranger.:)

Promoting All Music by Pamela Pike

Arguing about taste is as fundamental as having it in the first place. We take for granted that different people enjoy different things–and that others feel as confident in their judgments as we do in ours.

Our choices in books, music, art, and design go to the core of who we are. Taste can offer us a doorway into people’s lives.

Even as a child, David Archuleta’s appetite for exploring music was insatiable beginning with Jazz from his father’s influence and salsa from his mother. Like many who seek out a wide range of art at a young age, David continued to be artistically open-minded. To this day he still seeks out new music.

David is high in openness, the characteristic of creative, curious, and imaginative people, constantly sampling new music. Openness correlates to a great range of tastes. These individuals have a greater conception of what makes great music.

He listens to other people’s music and pays attention to what is playing such as Oldies, Pop, Rock, and gives each song a chance. He goes to concerts and checks out opening acts that may not be well-known and recommends to his fans listening to their music.

His recommendation of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Misty” from his latest blog shows great taste not only in songs but great singers as well. Being a great singer involves the ability to stay on pitch and convey emotion, the message of the song. They also should be as good live as they are recorded. Hearing a performer in concert tells the tale. The voice should be distinctly recognizable.

Ella could not only make a song come alive, but she brought an element of sweetness to her songs. She was able to make you feel that you were right there with her in the emotion of the song.

David has that ability, he understands music, he is young but his voice sounds experienced. He has a smile that will knock your socks off and draws you right into the emotions he is emitting. He also has the ability to enjoy himself when he performs and allows others to share in that pleasure.

Music is his life, commitment, work, discipline, fun, sorrowful, joyful – it’s just all things in one, it’s the rhythm of life. Music is the link to his dreams. Music is also the thing that brings David the closest to God.

His pen has been a fountain of joyful songs and I am longing to hear the results of all his hard work and dedication on October 5, 2010.

River, “I have long given up trying to rationally figure it out.”

Lol, I try to figure it out at least once a week, never successfully.
