We Concur, He Conquers: Bebe’s Recap

Posted by bebereader on Monday, August 30, 2010

Get out your sparklers; there were fireworks at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Stadium on Saturday as David struck the stage to perform his two singles.  One, a double-platinum hit and the other, by all indications, will one day reach multi-platinum.

I bought tickets for this event early, but wasn’t sure if I’d be able to attend due to other commitments.  I was ecstatic when those other plans fell through.

Mr. Bebe and I, in our General Admission seats high in the sky, sat through a few other acts before the STAR came onstage.  I have wondered what all the hoopla was about the Jonas Brothers.  Clearly, the kids in this New York City crowd love them and the people running the show took every opportunity to mention their names to get the crowd roaring. However, let it be said that at the mention of David’s name, the crowd went wild with excitement, too.  The Jonas Brothers, up first, are nice guys who sing a generic blend of mediocre pop songs.  They sound good onstage but are not outstanding in any way, in terms of talent, in my humble opinion.  Take each bro singularly and they don’t come close to being in David Archuleta’s ballpark or in this case, tennis stadium.  When you can have filet mignon, why settle for ground beef?  But kids love McJonas burgers; that’s why the fast food industry does so well.  Demi Lovato’s turn was next.  I enjoyed her but truthfully, I was too busy admiring her hair and boots to pay attention to her songs.

It felt like forever but finally it was David’s turn! Although it was 95 degrees on Saturday, I got the chills when Adrienne Bailon introduced him as “one of the most gifted performers on the planet.”  You ain’t kidding!  Make sure you check out David’s modest smile, in reply, on the video.  He looked beautiful in khaki pants and a blue plaid shirt with rolled-up sleeves.

“Something ‘Bout Love” took on new dimensions as David led the crowd to a more stepped-up version of the song as he instructed us to jump with him.  Keywords: LED THE CROWD.  Clearly this was no American Idol runner-up; this was an artist with stature, charisma, stamina, talent and enough experience to lead a stadium packed full with 24,000 people.  This song is an epic arena song and conducive to audience participation.  It is magnificent LIVE.  David lived and breathed SBL as if his life depended on it.  He stepped up the beat and flew across the stage with confidence and made people believe the song.  I was watching the audience.  Most didn’t know the song but that didn’t stop them from participating and trying to follow the lyrics.  The audience was transfixed on this young singer, and seemed very interested in hearing his message about love.  “Crush” was done a little differently this time. David stood and played the keyboard, then walked away with the mic, each time to sing the chorus. Very fresh and new.  The song was well-received and much of the audience sang along.

It dawned on me that David is now a businessman.  This was a huge deal; the beginning of the US Open.  There were thousands there who probably were exposed to his music for the very first time.  Well aware that the show was being taped by CBS for airing on national TV the next day, he was out there to share his music and to gain new fans.  It was evident that he accomplished his goal.

I find it remarkable that, although in his memoirs, he claimed to be painfully shy, in a very short time, David has now come full circle, and is able to take full command of an entire arena.  I was filled with pride as he had that audience in the palm of his hand.  We sat in the sun for three hours, after having walked a few miles from the parking lot to the stadium, then another half an hour to find our seats, only to do it all backwards again.  Does that make me crazy?  Does that make me cray-zee, cray-zee, cray-zee?  Possibly.  But, oh my stars!!!  What a wonderful time we had!  David sparkled like a jewel on that stage and I was there to witness it!  I’d do it again in a New York minute!

    Bebe dear,

Great recap. I can feel the pounding of the SBL beat in your narration. Funny how as fans we get chills and thrills whenever others finally get a sampling of David’s magnificent talent. Arena setting and worldwide broadcast event — this is a very good exposure for him 🙂

I also like that in mere seconds, Adrienne was able to help promote SBL, the forthcoming album & the book! Way to go CheetahGirl!

Talking of the reaction of the crowd, I think I best re-post this video from the end of the previous thread, as it magnifies how much fun the crowd got from SBL, live & with a band 🙂

This is actually, the 2nd vid of this performance I uploaded from the CBS broadcast. Some archies asked me eaalier if I missed the intro to David’s segment where a clip of SBL MV was televised. I didn’t but I was in a hurry to upload so here ya go:

And then for some action off-stage, here is David posing for pics before the show and signing autographs after the show:

Again thanks Bebe I enjoyed reading your post 🙂

Bebe, loved your recap. The show was in NYC and your vibe was very “New Yawk”. I have a sudden need for an egg cream after reading it. You did plenty of schlepping, but it was, of course, worth it, because of what you knew was waiting for you when you got there.

I’ve seen the videos of this performance and the other recent ones, and I gotta tell you, David has taken it to the stratosphere. His complete ownership of of any stage he is on, no matter its size, is reserved for the “giants”, and David casts a Goliath-esque shadow the second he shows up.

His physical appearance is so shockingly handsome that it forces the viewer to pay more attention to the music than ususal. Fortunately, David is such a fantastic singer and performer that even the distraction of his “looks” cannot undermine the power of his vocal prowess. David has shed much of his on stage inhibitions without sacrificing an iota of his humility, making him even more charismatic.

BTW, props to Shontelle for her beautiful performance. She’s a classy lady, very talented, and loves David. In other words, she’s got it all.

What an amazing performance! David just keeps raising his own bar. The thing of it is, no one else can even hope to reach it, let alone go over it. All they can do is limbo under it.

Bebe, it looks like it was kind of warm there yesterday. I’ll bet it was like a really cool drink of water and a refreshing breeze when David came on–probably completely forgot about the temps. How exciting for you to have been there!

And as for his outfit….lookin’ mighty fine! gaaahhhh

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the comments; I really do! I wish you all could have been there with me on Saturday to see in person how far David has come! There are no words to describe the feeling as I watched people get him like we do! Kudos go to Angelica and Djafan for the collage and screencaps included in my recap. Thank you!

JR#3 Thanks for posting those videos! I had to watch again to re-live the moment!

YJ#5 “Is this the biggest live venue he had sung his own songs?” Good question. I’m not sure. Maybe someone else can answer that. Anyone?

YJ#12 Yes! David confirmed on Twitter this morning that he’s heading to Vegas next, for the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. A good cause and more TV exposure! 😀

Bliss#13 As they say, “You can take the girl out of the city but you can’t take the city out of the girl! haha I was born and raised in New Yawk City. I don’t live there anymore but I’ll always love the Big Apple!

And this: “David has shed much of his on stage inhibitions without sacrificing an iota of his humility, making him even more charismatic.” <<< So true.

Umm, Bliss, want a pretzel rod to go with that egg cream? 😉

I noticed that David had a twitter party this morning with mention of a new vlog coming our way. We'll soon see.

Do you realize how many celebs would not have batted an eye when referred to as “one of the greatest performers on the planet.” ?

As to the size of the audience and singing his own songs, don’t forget that mammoth Phillipines concert. He was in command then too. I remember when the Del Mar concert was over and I turned to my friend and said “he lives for this”. There is no doubt that his comfort level is uncanny when he’s sharing his gift. On Saturday he bounced onto the stage, greeted the mob, turned to his sound guy and was very clear when he was ready to roll. His professionalism is amazing, especially when he’s all alone on the stage. Randy Jackson got it so right two years ago “you’re just born to do what you’re doin there…”. Indeed. It’s such a priviledge to watch it all happen.

Aside from the crazy crowd here in the Philippines – 50k+ within the concert arena and estimated 40k+ more outside – I think the other bigger crowd is any of the three — the recent 4th of July and singing the anthem during 2009 US Open or ProBowl?

Clearly, David breathes to perform. But I think he is still at his finest & best in intimate settings. Among friends, families and fans for whom he doesn’t have to prove anything anymore; where trust is implicit in his gift. In such setting, he is himself and just sharing… no fear of being judged.

Ah! To be just feet away from him and hear that voice in all its soul-piercing glory!

    New David Blog – 8/30/10

Helloo to everyone from Nashville. It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog, so I thought it’d be a good week to write one.

I’ve had a really great past couple of weeks! I’ve been on the first leg of a radio promo tour, and it’s been great visiting all the different radio stations and getting to perform again! I started in Greenville, South Carolina for B93.7’s Zoo-A-Palooza to help raise money for the local Greenville Zoo there. I then went to Louisville, Kentucky where I got to do a show for WDJX with other performers like We The Kings, Hot Chelle Rae, Iyaz, and Kris Allen as the host. It was really fun hanging with everyone there. We then made stops at 106.3 in Lexington, Q102 in Cincinnati, WNCI in Columbus, and Q102 in Philly. It’s fun getting to go to all of the different radio stations! We also went to PRO FM in Rhode Island, which is always great going over to see them! After that we went to Sixflags New England for a show with KC 101 where Auburn, Boys Like Girls, Flo Rida, and Bruno Mars performed at too. I must admit that I’m a pretty big fan of Bruno Mars’s stuff. He has an awesome voice. I’m sure you guys know his new song Just the Way You Are, but if you haven’t then you should really check it out.

After all the radio promo, it was time to go to New York for Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day where Shontelle, Allstar Weekend, Demi Lovato, and Jonas Brothers also performed. It was really fun. It was cool meeting Allstar Weekend and hanging with them, and then seeing Shontelle and Demi again. I didn’t really get to say much to the Jonas Brothers, but I did catch a bit of their soundcheck. It was cool getting to sing “Something ‘Bout Love” for the first time live.. period.. lol, then also first time live on TV both acoustically on Good Day NY and then with the energy of the band on AAKD. Hope you guys have been enjoying the performances! It’s also been fun getting to introduce another new song from the album called “Elevator” that I first sang in Greenville. It’s one of my favorite songs on the album and I feel is a good representation of what else you’ll be getting from the album :). More of the David vibe haha.

So… we’ve been getting things wrapped up with the album The Other Side of Down!! It’s been pretty crazy trying to get everything finalized but we’re pretty much finished and have done all we can under the amount of time that there was to work with haha. I’m really excited! We’re a little over a month away from it coming out October 5th, and I’m already starting to feel the anxious and the jitters. I really hope all the work this last year pays off though for all of you! Anyway I am going to end for today, and talk to you guys later!

Songs for the day: Just the Way You Are – Bruno Mars

    Misty – Ella Fitzgerald

This song has really been growing on me lately for some reason. Ella is incredible.

These words make me think of some other words spoken by our sweetie–He said. “I’m going to go out there and I’m just gonna make them understand this song.” I think of that quite often when he is performing. Also the Paula comment “You just have this aura about you.”

What a hectic schedule he has had lately and yet each performance is brand new. So much we have to look forward to every time he starts to sing. Then he takes time to write a blog and take us step by step through his appearances, making mention of the radio stations, etc. — who else does that? He is so appreciative of all in his life. Ella? My family and I watched the U.S open together and thought his SBL performance was amazing! Actually my fam and I watch all the David appearances lol. But hopefully he gets alot of new fans and more recognition. Bebe your right about what Adrienne Bailon said. It gave me goosebumps too! Plus David has amazing musical taste! Bruno Mars is my 2nd fave artist next to David which is pretty high lol. I would literally die if he sang Just the way you are cuz it’s my face song now! Gah why is he so dang gorgeous and talented?

angelica #31 LOL! He is simply a music man. God love him. I wish he’d cover every song in the world. I actually downloaded that Bruno Mars song a few weeks ago. I’m glad there is a clean but awesome song getting airplay. Modest is hottest. Who knew? David did. 🙂

Hey hey! It’s Tuesday! Got a lot done this am.

FG, I really liked Bruno Mars too. Checked him out, as instructed, by David. Did not steer me wrong, of course. I loved Just the Way You Are and listened to several others. There is one called, Love, that is really good. Nice to see a rap song with uplifting lyrics.

Anyone think there is a chance in hades of ninja videos from the Celtic Woman show? Keep hope alive!

Please donate to Crush Kids for Cancer which is having its fund drive right now. See Djafan’s post #53. There is also a permanent link to it on the right sidebar.

Betsy #71 and Betsy #73. Thank you! I’m so blown away by the Forbes interview. I’ve watched it four times and going back for a fifth. Finally, a respectful interview where he isn’t asked the same old questions and he is treated as a respected recording artist in his own right by one of the leading magazines in the country.

Thanks everyone of you for making life in Archuland so eventful! It’s a mighty fine and sturdy friendship tree that’s growing here.

BEBEREADER – for some reason I get choked up listening to that interview. From his soft statement of directness about pushing for more involvement in his craft and not to be known as AI runner-up all his life to what actually drives him… just shows why a whole bunch of us are in this for life.

Of all of David’s remarkable traits, it is his honesty and sincerity that touches me the most. The Forbes interview clearly shows these qualities, and I was very moved by it. David does not have to sing a note to be a significant and positive person in our culture. He has taken the concept of “being yourself” and turned it into an art form.

“got more mama’s than a patch of sunflowers have seeds” OMG, how true Tawna21! That reminds me of the token I sent Lupe (tho I have no idea whether it reached her, hehe) — made-of-clay wind chimes — and my note said that for every chime it creates, there is another arch angel taking care of David whenever he is away from home/her.
