David Archuleta – The Early Collection
Posted by bebereader on Friday, August 13, 2010
I was in the Voice Unplugged a few nights ago, watching old videos of David’s first tour, when it dawned on me that with the release of “The Other Side of Down” on October 5, there will be a whole new set of songs. I am more than ready for new music and I wish David the best of luck with the release of his new CD, especially since he had a hand in writing most, if not all the songs.
Yet, as a hardcore fan of The Voice, who attends multiple concerts, I will always yearn for David to sing the songs from his first, self-titled CD, the songs which will one day be referred to as ‘The Early Collection.” These songs are dear to my heart because I have come to love them not only for their merit but because they are the original songs David sang on his first tour.
Video credit chicagoarchie0000
I realize that the new setlist will be a combination of old and new songs but I can’t help but feel nostalgic because I won’t hear my personal favorites, “Barriers”, “My Hands” and “Waiting For Yesterday” like I did before.
Do you feel like I do? Are there any “must-have” songs from David’s “early collection” that you hope he includes in the setlist for his next tour? Now is your chance to voice your opinion. Please choose three ‘must-have’ songs from David’s early collection.
We will tally up the votes and present them to David at an upcoming M&G, the top three songs that we can’t live without.
(Crush is not listed because it’s a given that David will sing it since it was his first hit.)

How to pick 3?? It’s hard to imagine not hearing To Be With You, You Can, Zero Gravity and all the dearly loved songs that we all know every word to. And then there’s Angels, and Imagine and Apologize and … oh well, we all get the picture. We’ll take ANYTHING we can get. I’d listen to the Xmas songs if it were live right now in August. Can’t wait to see him, if only for a few songs, on the 27th.

Today I am a “Zero Gravity”, “Barriers” and “To Be With You” gal! Tomorrow it may be “Angels”, “Imagine” and “You Can” because I can’t imagine not having all of his songs at the next concert! Yikes…I never thought of it this way!

YAY! You made it to The Voice! It was my pleasure to share some LIVE performances with you. Bless the YouTubers who film at shows. There is nothing so good as David singing live.
Bebe
You are so right about the “old” songs. The main reason for having the Unplugged video site is to preserve our fondest memories of David performing his music.
Anyone can come by to watch and listen.

David to perform at the Mentor’s 20th Anniversary Gala on Oct. 8!
Attending a David Archuleta concert and dinner on Oct. 8 could be one of the most charitable acts you’ll perform all year.
Those familiar with Mentors International (Mentors) already know of its the impact on impoverished families in third world countries. The cycle of improvement is never-ending with our simple but profound model. People who might otherwise be resigned to begging on the streets are now self-reliant. They are able to feed their families and send their children to school. As people work hard and learn to be accountable, they lift and employ people around them.
We are excited to announce the 20th anniversary year of this great work. Please join us at our annual gala on October 8, 2010 to celebrate.
In addition to an evening meal, the gala will feature a special performance by American Idol star David Archuleta and an awards ceremony honoring John Hatch, microfinance pioneer great. It will be an exciting evening, and those interested in making the world a better place won’t want to miss out.
Mentors is pressing forward and bringing some exciting new programs to the table. Come see for yourself how Mentors continues to lift more and more families from poverty. Register for the gala at http://www.RegOnline.com/mentors_international or call 801-676-7776 ext.10.

I will miss these songs as well.
The a cappella ending of My Hands, the amazing showcasing of his vocals on To Be With You, and Barriers – he has so much fun with it. Like everyone else, the list could change tomorrow. 🙂
I was watching Something ‘Bout Love yesterday and noticed his other vids to the right of the page and rewatched Touch My Hand. I noticed the new fans had been there as well.
This comment stood out to me:
Okay… um… who won American Idol, anyway? ‘Cause, clearly… he’s better than whoever it was

Bebe, that wasn’t easy!! I chose “Zero Gravity” because it’s such a fun interaction with the audience experience. “Don’t Let Go” shows so much of David’s passion that I get goosebumps. I voted for “Desperate” because I hope someday to hear him do that one live.

I was not a fan of “Touch my Hand” when the album came out, but his improvisations on it, especially at Rexburg, make it stand Way Out for me. Speaking of Rexburg, and Touch my Hand, is there any video tape anywhere? The one on YouTube was removed.

There is one not on the list that he wrote that I would love to hear, Falling. I loved it from the first listen, I read somewhere that he sang some of it a VIP.
And then I love sassy, flirty David, so Your Eyes Don’t Lie and Works for me.
And then because I love romantic, ballad David, To Be With You.
And then because I love inspiring, hope giver David, Somebody Out There and Save The Day.
And then because I love dancy, bouncy David Zero Gravity and Waiting For Yesterday.
Well you see where I’m going with this…I love all David music…lol

So hard to pick three…I loved them all. My choices are Zero Gravity, To Be With You & Desperate even though he only sang the latter once live. Must have been a difficult song to sing live is my guess or perhaps he didn’t identify with it since he’s such a happy-go-lucky kind of guy 🙂 Based on what he’s told us, thinking his new album will be full of upbeat songs that reflect his personality. Whatever it turns out to be, we’re gonna’ love it!

Boy teach, you don’t hand out easy assignments do you? I can’t imagine David opening with anything other than “Touch my Hand”, maybe a stripped down version ( leave out a chorus ), but it is his signature opener, like “Crush” is the closer.
Barriers , because it is so intense and really shows off his vocals skills, but they ALL do. This one really appeals to all ages.
“Waiting for Yesterday , because he should have an audience participation song. He likes that and so does the audience.
# 16 Heidijoy–I agree with you about ” Let me Go”, it is a very under rated song, like “Zero Gravity” was. My teenage grand daughters really like this one, wasn’t it on a bonus track from i-tunes? Have I ever heard this on The Voice Unplugged? If not, Abs you should make a picture video to go with it, I’ll bet a lot of people have never heard it. I think this one would really go over well on the radio. GRRR
Let’s face it, there isn’t a bad one in the whole lot, I say he should stay on the stage til he drops! Let’s clone him!!

Bebe, I really like that, “David, the early collection”, as everything David sings becomes a part of his repertoire he can draw from forever. To Be With You, Angels and Zero Gravity got my votes, but David gave us an even earlier collection on Idol and Idol tour. I’ve considered these performances his first album, even with shortened songs. I’d pay big bucks to hear him sing Smokey Mountain Memories, Shop Around, Think of Me, When you Believe, When You Say You Love Me, and need I say Imagine, and even songs he hasn’t sang that I’d love to hear him put his voice to. His performances are legendary, and he’s not even 20. So, I guess I’m no help at all, lol.

Welcome Akang and Yuni!
Djafan, Heidijoy, and Dakgal,
In Bebe’s defense she actually did include Falling and Let Me Go in her list but I left them out because David did too. He never sang either of those songs in concert so I stuck with the ones he had. I also love those songs too and would love to hear him sing them live. Especially Let Me Go, which may turn out to be a sleeper one day. *hoping*
It was really hard to narrow it down to three. I finally chose
Your Eyes Don’t Lie, (because life without that whistle just don’t hold no meaning for me) lol, jk. Sort of. 😉
Desperate, because hearing him accompany himself on piano and sing that power ballad is almost an out of body experience for me.
Zero Gravity, because it is, IMO, one of the best pop songs to come along in a long time and should have hit the charts big. We are just fortunate David and Mike insisted on doing it live on tour, despite the lack of support for it from the label. It should have made the album.
But really, I love each and every one of his songs from his first CD. Considering it was a debut album and the lack of time he had to make it, on odd weekends during a grueling tour, it’s a remarkable body of work. There are no bad songs on the whole CD.
And LIVE they are even better. Makes me wonder what the heck is in store for us on the sophomore album which has had a completely different scenario in its creation.

It was really tough to vote for the top 3 as most of it are my favourites except two on the list. When I first listened to the album, the 2 songs that had me hooked were “you can” and “your eyes don’t lie”. I really enjoyed YEDL especially the whistling part and thought it was brilliant on a pop song and some fans even commented that it has the cowboy feeling…hahaha…. Whenever the song is on, I always whistle together with David 🙂 but at that time, I wasn’t sure who the whistler was until David did it at one of his concerts. Thanks Djafan for posting the video!!

I also really love his LIVE versions of Don’t Let Go, Barriers, Works For Me, Zero Gravity, and….well, I guess I love just about all the songs on his first album. But that was not the case initially. David’s LIVE performances of the songs I wasn’t crazy about completely changed my mind & I grew to really love them all. That’s the genius of David.
And don’t get me started on his “covers”!

Just wondering, (and who knows if this is a duet or not) how much input would they give him in selecting a duet partner. I would think he has a fair amount of say, don’t think they would have him do it with someone he was opposed to; and I don’t think David would care if it is a big name or not, just someone he respects as an artist.

This from Orla Fallon
I also have some very exciting news to announce in that I am filming two PBS Specials in September. It’s been hard to keep the news quiet, but I’m delighted that I can at last tell you that the first will be filmed at the beautiful Polk Theatre in Nashville on September 2. It’s a Christmas Show and I am thrilled to announce that I will be joined by former Celtic Woman Meav and American Idol sensation David Archuleta. It will be the first time for Meav and I to perform together since our CW days so it will be very special. We are both really excited about working with David, who is an extraordinary talent.

Angelica – thanks for finding that video. That girl can sing! She reminds me of Joss Stone. I bet our musical genius found her. 🙂
Soul + Soul = I cannot wait for this album.

Couldn’t AGREE more about Lara Johnston. To me, she is a cross between Joss Stone & Kelly Clarkston, with a voice that can sing soul, R&B, blues & rock. She is very good. I’m surprised she is relatively unknown.
I’m salivating just thinking of what a duet between her & David would be like. 😀
A tour with David as his opener would be fine with me. 😉

This announcement is a gem, an exciting find to me, that David has been asked to be part of this Christmas Special. To have David and Celtic singers on the stage together basically blows me away as the high level of artistry is in a place of its own. Celtic music is highly prevalent in our province and a part of our culture. It will be extraordinary…

It’s funny how some days, one can get stuck on a certain song. Tonight I was hooked again by You Can.
And then I remembered this:
Just David and a guitar (and no screaming)
Have a beautiful night all.

SB#90 I’m excited as well! I’ve always loved Celtic music. Pre-David, I was a big fan of The Corrs.
Our Nashville girl, Emifriend has been on vacation. I called and got to tell her about this event since I’m sure tickets will go fast.
Hope David will appear on more specials on TV, Christmas or otherwise. Seeing him in my livingroom on the big screen is high on my wish list.
Betsy#91 Just what I needed! Thank you!
Djafan#92 Love the interactive look at the Polk Theater in Nashville. Thanks!
