“I Sing Because It Makes People Feel Good..”

Unique. Angelic. Powerful. Calming. Expressive. One-of-a kind. Mesmerizing. Priceless. Unmatched. Addictive. Healing. The kind of voice that comes along once in a lifetime. I am nearly out of adjectives to describe The Voice of David Archuleta. For two and a half years I have craved the pure sound of his voice ad infinitum. Could there be a scientific explanation for this? Is it possible that his voice has a healing power?
It occurred to me that David’s voice might actually contain a quality similar to other sounds I find soothing like waves crashing at the beach, birds singing or the sound of rain falling. When I hear his voice, very simply, I feel good. His speaking voice has the same effect on me. There is a magical quality in his voice that is hard to define and, for me, remains a mystery. The timbre of his voice makes my blood pressure go down and my endorphins begin to multiply. But there’s more.
Music has always been a very large part of my life. My favorite songs are like comfort food but this is different. It’s personal. David’s voice speaks directly to me and makes me feel happy to be alive. It transports me to another hemisphere, eases any emotional pain and somehow makes me feel whole again. David’s voice puts all the fragments of my hurting soul back together like a completed puzzle. How he does this I don’t know but I do know that it’s part of his gift. His voice is healing for me.
Aiming to create a balance in the body, hospitals use music to help patients heal. The desired outcome is, of course, to promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, relieve muscle tension and to improve quality of life. Music is played in the background in doctors and dentist’s offices to make people relax; in elevators, in malls, in gyms to put you in a good mood. There is a theory that when we were babies, still in the womb, we were influenced by our mother’s heartbeat, the first calming sound. And we never stop craving that safe environment.
Science is now documenting what mystics have known forever, that everything that exists does so with vibrations. Humans and animals respond to certain tones and frequencies. Anything that heals us somehow alters our frequency resonance. Our brains produce wave patterns that can be measured with instruments. Our voices also produce wave patterns that show frequency information which relates to our physical and emotional health.

…but does he realize how healing his own voice is?
David Archuleta and his voice will continue to touch people’s hearts and lives. In Chords of Strength, he said “I sing because it makes people feel good, and that is the truth.” Perhaps his destiny is to bring happiness and healing to the world with his voice. Onstage, he dares to give it all away and he surrenders his heart and soul to the music. His voice may be as soothing as ocean waves. It may have the same frequency as the patter of rain falling on the ground. It may even have the same vibration as that of a songbird. But I won’t put it to the test because I don’t have to. The proof is already out there.

bebereader, you said everything I feel. Music has been a major force in my life too. I still have 200 or so songs on my iPod not recorded by David. BUT! David has not become ordinary to me. I have all of his songs on there too and he is who I always want to hear. Angels a capella/New Orleans, Imagine at the Hollywood Christmas Tree Lighting. Pure bliss,comfort.
Any live Zero Gravity still gives me butterflies. I wish everyone felt like we do about him. I feel certain David will have a long successful career. I’m so glad I’m alive at this time. So fortunate to know of David Archuleta.

Bebe, I absolutely love this! Since first coming to this site I have become far more educated than I ever thought possible for me!!
Today I drove in the car with 4 teenage girls on a church outing and I methodically placed David ‘s book inside the pouch behind my seat in the car so they could see it!! It is well known my fascination with him amongst all the girls, but I don’t think they knew how much!! When they got in my car, I warned them that the only music in my car was him and they were all okay with that!!! They noticed the book as soon as they hot in the car, and they thumbed through it and talked about how much they loved him on idol and come to find out, even one of them had gone to his March 2009 concert in SLC even. They were familiar with his CD and even Zero Gravity, but had no idea about his book nor his Christmas CD. So since we had a good hours ride ahead of us, I told them I had it in my car and they all wanted to listen to it! But instead of playing his CD I played them Abbra’s CD of his live singing of the songs!! We listened to Christmas music in July our whole way there and just before we got there I played them “Be Still My Soul” with him bearing his soul before singing it and they were so moved by it!!! Two of the girls love “Beaver” right now, but I was able to explain to them the difference between them, and Bebe, by dang, I used some of the words you used here to try to explain to them what it is about David Archuleta that is so special!! It just amazes me to know that this young man has affected so many in exactly the same way he has me! That there really is something extra special about him and I am not alone in my awe of him, that I have all of you to share it with!!!
One thing they shared with me is that they have never watched AI again cause they were so upset that he lost and because no season could compare with it ever!! I loved that!! I had so much fun telling them all about what he has been doing the past 2 years and also shared his new song with them!! They wanted to listen to it over and over again on the way home and said they were all going to iTunes as soon as they got home to download it!!! Woohoo!!! I certainly didn’t mind this little road trip today one bit!! I was in my happy “David” place the whole time!!!
Sorry this is so long, but one more thing…..”Something ‘Bout Love” has a very strong healing power to it also! This past week I had my heart literally broken! I felt how love can break your heart and tear you apart!! My heart honestly hurt more than I ever thought possible for hours and hours that day. But as I lay there feeling so sad, I thought, I need David’s voice to get me through this! First I listened to “Desparate”, then “Somebody Out There” and I could feel my heart healing slowly, and the “Something ‘Bout Love” came on my iPod next and as I really listened to the words , the tears stopped flowing and as the song came to an end, I knew I was going to be all right and that I would live through this!! I felt whole again and I wasn’t going to let this take me down!! His voice healed me that day and I will be forever grateful for that!
Thank you, Bebe, I needed this article tonight more than you will ever know! I love everyone here at The Voice, and can’t wait for the day we may all get to meet in one place! Won’t that be grand??

Wow thanks Bebe what a wonderful article! It’s true that David’s voice and music can heal someone. What I’ve come to realize is that every time I am sad or depressed or angry I automatically put a David song on and it makes me feel better. During one of the hardest times of my life so far I felt so alone and helpless like nothing could help and every night I would listen to Falling and Desperate and through time it helped me get out of my rut. I think the most powerful lyric in falling is the end when David sings about how the person will not commit suicide and keep pushin to the end. Another example is when i saw David perfrom Not a very good liar I was going through the almost same thing the girl in his song was going through and it helped me so much. I’m glad Somethin bout Love is his single because I am hoping that this song will help somebody else and they will stumble across one of The Voices concert videos and they will see what we’ve been seeing all along.

I love David’s voice (his timbre and speaking voice too)!
His music makes me happy and I can’t go a day without listening to it.
All I know is when I’m having a bad day if I haven’t heard him sing, I feel out of sorts and stressed out. His music is like medicine and once I hear him sing he just “changes” the way I feel. He gives me hope, he lifts my soul, he “changes” my mood, he makes me feel that no matter what is going on, everything will be alright.
The messages in his music are powerful and uplifting and his rich, velvety voice is soooo soothing like nothing I’ve ever heard before.
When David sings I don’t just “hear” a beautiful voice or song…I “feel” his voice…it pierces right through my soul.

In this article you did a wonderful job in explaining how David’s music heals the soul. It matters not if they are a long time fan or first time listener. The emotion he evokes from a song invites us stand beside him in spirit and feel what he feels. I did not own an iPod until I began listening to David’s music. He is the only artist I have playing on mine. I don’t really need any other to entertain me. What Shawna said about choosing the live Cd music is the reason I make Cd’s from live performances. Studio recordings are good but the live recordings reveal David’s truth in the moment in front of an audience. While we draw a sense of healing from his voice, he draws energy and rebirth for each song that he performs live. This is evidenced by how he changes up some notes on the fly when he sings.
I have this mp3 mash up of vocalizations taken from his CFTH tour. It’s quite soothing. I do not recall (sorry!) how it came to me, so I can’t give proper credit. I will share it here:

It is amazing when you think about the fact that many others are affected the same way we are when we hear David sing.You have done a great job describing that feeling, and I’m glad because it is hard to explain to people sometimes. When I read those quotes you selected from Chords of Strength, it is surprising that they came from an 18 (then) or 19 year old. He is so insightful, I’m glad music has always affected David the way it has as that is part of what encourages him to share his gift with others. I just hope he realizes how much good he has done for so many.

Dear David,
Your voice jumped out of my television and into my heart as I tuned into another season of American Idol. I have watched the show every season, and was ready for another entertaining one this year. I had no idea that I was about to be overcome with a rush of emotions, and plunge head-first into a joy I hadn’t experienced before.
From the first moment I heard you sing, I knew that you were something special. It seemed as though you weren’t singing, or performing, but acting as a channel though which the music came. Your voice touched a place in me that I didn’t even know existed, a place where flying feels possible, and love and beauty abounds. I have never been so moved by someone’s voice before, and I don’t believe that I will be again. I didn’t know I needed to feel that place, but you came and showed it to me. I didn’t know that my heart could soar so high and I that I could be so uplifted by a voice, but you sang and the path became illuminated, and I’ve been in flight ever since.
Getting to know you during the season just endeared you to me all the more. Your sweet spirit and humility, your joy and strength of character are an inspiration and a blessing. Thank you for sharing your gift with us. It means more to me than you will ever know.

David’s voice is healing and calming and brings me happiness….makes me laugh, makes me dance, makes me cry happy tears… I had to travel an hour to a doctor yesterday. I was really apprehensive and scared… I listened to “Be Still My Soul” and other “David music” all the way. You are absolutely right. I don’t just “hear” David’s voice and music but I “feel” it. I felt a great calm come over me. I am so grateful for David sharing his gift with me. He is just plain awesome!
PS! Can’t wait for the new CD! This year is going to be so much fun!

It’s funny how yesterday I was just thinking how much I love the sound of David’s speaking voice. I had been watching his Capital One performance over and over again and I thought about how I love his speaking voice. Like you said, Bebereader, his soothing voice does has a familiar sound. You have given us such a wonderful article Bebe, and it is really quite impossible to find anything else to add. But let me tell you guys about a conversation I had with a young man 1 week ago:
He asked me which singer I liked.
I told him.
He said: that American Idol Ar-ke-le-ta?
I corrected him and said “yes”.
I then made several attempts to tell him about David, but he was not listening, or just refused to listen, poor sod.
Then he asked: Who else do you listen to?
I said: No one.
He said: No one?
I said: No one.
He looked at me with a strange expression which I interprete as: Hey lady, you ARE limited.
Little does he know that in David’s voice and singing, I have found everything I need and ever want. Instead of being limited, I feel he has opened up to me a whole new world of new-found joy and pain sublimated, and a huge universe of beauty of sound.
He has uplifted me to the other side of down.
He has energized me to a feeling of zero gravity.
I am now at a place where I can look into my own soul and be happy with myself. I do not need any other singer. It is very difficult for me now to listen to others after having listened to David. I have settled for the best… ever.

Beautifully said. When I was wondering if I should get an ipod sandybeaches said it was a must have, I have it and all it has is David, David singing, David speaking, David making wonderful sounds. It calms me and it helps me sleep. If the medical world is using sound for healing then I know I must not be crazy…lol

Bebe, love your article. Several times before I tried to to stay away or to give up David. I worried about weather I had an unhealthy obsession or addiction. Of course now I know that’s not the case. I don’t neglect my duties at work or at home and I have a sense of priority. But I do know of that special place in my heart that only David could have opened up in me and I didn’t know I had. On those times when I tried to stay away, after going for days without having him in them I would not only feel that yearning, but I would hear David’s voice in my head. And it would actually feel and sound like a “calling”. A calling that said “It’s ok. It’s safe” And it is. When I hear his voice in Zero Gravity or Touch My Hand I can’t help but smile. Solace and peace are the gifts his voice gives me with Be Still My Soul and Ave Maria. His precious talking voice makes him so endearing to me. And what can be said about that glorious laughter?! I keep asking myself what is it about him and that voice of his that has touched me like no one or nothing has ever before. What a blessing to be here at this time with David in our lives.

I also had problems with English, yet today I have some. The only requirement for entry was: respect, respect for David and to all the habitants of this wonderful home. And every day I try to honor that request. I feel blessed to have come to this house, I am accompanied, I feel protected. If David did not exist I’d never met these people, never have begun to study again. So great was my despair to communicate that I had to start to study English again.
Sometimes my English is not understandable, I know the girls understand me and especially Abrra, I love her very much and sometimes I like to give back a little bit of everything she gives me, will never be enough.
Do not worry, as there is love and respect in the words we head towards david, we always understood, always.

How can you watch this adorable blog of David’s and not grin from ear to ear! Honestly, he brings me so much joy, I can hardly contain myself. Just hearing this right now makes me even more giddy with excitement for his new CD. I bet the songs are incredible!!

Even though I have read COS, the quotes you stated from the book mean even more to me reading them from this context. All I could think of to say after reading them was just “wow!!” he is pure wonderment. Thank you again, Bebe this truly is a treasure.

Yes, not only his singing voice, but his speaking voice as well, bring comfort to my stress-filled days. I’m constantly, it seems, in a dither about what life brings to me. If I stop and ‘listen’ to David, whether it’s music or his spoken word, I can calm myself and move forward. I’m completely converted to the fact that David is here on this earth, at this time, not by chance but because of a plan from God to help those of us that are open to David’s spirit. I’ve been blessed to work with an amazing group of admins who are respectful and supportive of each other. Abrra, the inspiration for this article, saw how enthused I was when I heard she wanted to write about how David’s voice makes us feel. She handed the idea over to me, no questions asked. That kind of generousity of spirit is rare these days. Djafan is my rock. She listens to my tribulations and advises me to forge ahead, anyway. Her screenshot of “David in the rain” from the ALTNOY video is amazing. Angelica, the heart and soul of The Voice, dares me to step outside of my comfort zone and encourages me to stretch my writing muscles.

You are so right about the timbre of his voice, it just cuts to the quick. I have never experienced anything like it. And it matters not what he is singing, that voice just fills you up. Your article is just so full of so much of the wonder of the Voice. You beautifully juxtaposed what people feel when listening to his voice with what David feels and wants to convey. I love how you compare his voice to the feelings of listening to the ocean, rain, or birdsong. It IS like that, isn’t it? There is something natural and familiar about his voice that soothes and puts you in an altered state.
BTW, it wasn’t a bad explicative I shouted when I clicked on the vlog. It was a fairly mild one but still…not in the habit of doing that but I was just not prepared for that LOOK.

This article is beautiful! It is full of mind and heart and explores a beautiful mystery- the depths of David’s gift. I love the ocean picture too.. I can almost hear it. I am writing this without having read the previous comments due to the busyness of this day, but I wanted to be quick about saying “Congratulations on writing a stellar, keeper post!”
I have thought about this topic a lot and though I have not met David nor heard him in person, I have concluded that David walks with God daily and enjoys the connection with God that continually fills David with the Holy Spirit–It overflows from him to others –and hence is the Source of the healing that comes from his music. I don’t mean to sound preachy or weird about it, it’s just how I have come to understand it in the way I understand things.
I love the scientific approach to this topic, and I am aware that “they” have shown that music integrates both sides of our brain– to take music in, we have to translate form, function, rhythm, lyric, context, melody etc etc– so we process music with our whole mental capacity. I have even heard that playing classical music to babies enhances their IQ. No wonder music can cut to the very core of our being– and David’s music is safe- it is filled with love, joy, tenderness, fun, all the good things.
So no matter why or how, we are blessed and filled with gratitude to David for his sharing, his hard work, his self discipline, his risk taking… no need to go on, I know I am singing to the choir now! Xoxo Emifriend

Love the scientific approach you took to decipher the affects his voice has on the listener – healing, calming/relaxation & energizer (endorphins). Kind of like what Yoga used to do for me. Who needs meds – he is so much more than a happy pill (oh there’s money to be made if one knew how to market this). Bottom line for me is he has enriched my life and resolved any issues (sleep deprivation no longer amongst them with my dPod) because as he said “I sing because it makes people feel good”. Really good – just my evolving playlist of David songs & his covers.

David’s vlogs makes everything come into focus for me. When life gets blurry, there he is, making it clear…that life is good or as good as we want it to be. It’s all in us, how we determine the path we take. Either we wallow in self pity while lamenting “woe is me” or we can be thankful for the good in our lives even when it seems there’s not much good at any given moment. David is a “GOOD” in my life. He makes me smile, sometimes makes me laugh..out loud too! He is like a cool breeze in this sweltering heat wave that seems to be never ending.
I am happy David is doing what he feels he must to make sure his album is the best it can be. However long it takes, we will be waiting. I was very happy when he said “HE” was in the process of choosing the songs for the album. That tells me HE is in control of the direction of the album. He will not be compromised. He will not be deterred from his standards & goals. Whether the album is gold or platinum seems to be of no consequence to David as long as “The Other Side Of Down” reflects who he is & what he thinks & believes.
He deserves to take a break this weekend & I hope he gets to go home. But whatever he does, I hope he has a great time!

Let me tell you about my own experience:
I had a lost-parking-ticket situation a few months ago in a shopping mall. I was getting flustered, angry with myself and blubbering all over with the tickets people (because I knew I had the ticket somewhere and I’ve already paid for it).
This rather ugly scene went on for about 10 minutes, when all of a sudden, ALTNOY started to play. My ears perked up and I actually calmed down. And less than a minute later, someone found the ticket under the car next to mine. I had dropped it and the wind must have blown it away.
I believe in energy.
I think my noisy energy woke God from his siesta or somethin’ (need to rest witnessing all the troubles of the world!). He sent a message to me through David, to tell me to “shut up”! haha
I have had more than a couple of similar experiences in the past which I dismissed as coincidences at the beginning, but when it continues to happen, I can no longer ignore what I believe deep inside, to be true.

I’ve never been a fan or follow anyone before, the first time I heard his voice I thouhgt that this guy is special and when he sang “imagine” for the first time on Idol I had to leave the room so that my family wouldn’t see tears in my eyes and think I lost it. I had to fix my jaw many times cause it always drop freely and happily when he sings ouch ha. I can never put my finger on what and how he does what he does to me and this article really enlighted me and reassure that I’m not alone here. So there I said it. Thanks again for the wonderful site I come here everyday but never dare to post any comments since my English is limited. By the way I’m a Thai fan living in Malaysia and loving David’s Voice.

I’m still at the beach with my family, but I have a quick story for you. Last night we were at Barefoot Landing, an big outdoor, boardwalk-like shopping complex in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. My 9 year old brother got separated from us. We split up to look for him, after a couple of long minutes I found him, crying, waiting with a few nice people near where we lost him. Today, out of the blue, while we were all out in the ocean together, Nick says ” I know what I should have done yesterday when I was lost. I should have yelled “Oh my gosh, there’s David Archuleta!”, because you would have found me faster.” haha, sadly, that might be true. 🙂

Its an interesting read written by a boyfriend of lady in hot pursuit of David in Hawaii last year. The comments are a fun read as well. The poster Julie may have been sucking lemons or licking a cheese grater in the wrong direction to find herself in such a mood. 😉 Just proves that nothing really has changed. Ladies still pull out all the stops to be near David. And boyfriends have to tread lightly. This one even goes overboard to assist.

Guess what I just did?
I watched David’s “Epic Vlog” (as djafan called it when she emailed me about it).
I have to admit I am addicted to it. His happiness, his enthusiasm, his excitement is infectious.
There was one part I think he was just a little bit tired & weary & it was just a slight expression & the sound of his voice when he said he was “in sunny California”. IMO.
Not that he dislikes CA, I’m sure he loves it, just that he may be as anxious to hit the road touring again as we are! 😀

Ah dakgal, thank you! I remember first watching this video performance of ZG from Columbus and shaking so bad I could hardly type to comment on it. I had just posted a comment right before that, lamenting something to the effect that, “ever since Sayreville, he just isn’t bringing the same intensity to this song” As soon as I hit submit I saw this vid posted from that night’s concert in Columbus and BAM!!! He blew me away and made me eat my words! I realized that the low key performances between Sayreville and this night were just an example of retract before impact taking place in his skills. It was a lesson in “Trusting the Archulator” I’ll never forget.
