I’m Loving Angels in Vegas
Posted by djafan on Friday, July 9, 2010
Trying to hold out for a book signing closer to home, I had been debating to go or not to go to the Nevada signing last Wednesday. Clearly a two-hour drive would make more sense than a four-hour drive, riiiight? But when I woke up on Wednesday morning, I knew I had to go. I just couldn’t take the chance of missing out, in case no more dates materialized. I called my parents and asked them if they wanted to go on a road trip and do some gambling. I knew they would say yes; it was, after all, Las Vegas! They were ready in record time and by 6:30 am we were on the road!
I mapped out the distance from the state line and the book store…15 minutes…great! I dropped off parents at the casino and headed off to see and hear David! As I approached the line I saw SweetOnDA and JH! I was so glad they recognized me from the Christmas concert in December. Thank you all who didn’t mind me cutting in line. You hear it over and over and it’s true; seeing David’s fans is like running into old friends. We chatted the time away until the time came to gather around the stage. We were so lucky to be up close. Several people noticed The Voice button and mentioned they loved the site. I handed some buttons out. It’s great to hear the positive feedback.
I had never used this camera before and the instructions I received from my son came in handy. I practiced a little and I apologize for the shaking in some parts. All of a sudden, they announced he was there! And there he was, standing in front of me. The beautiful pictures of him DO NOT do him justice. David Archuleta is by far, even more stunning in person. Unreal!
Crush was amazing and Angels came from another universe. His voice just reached out to us and put us in some sort of trance because that was the quietest group of fans I had seen. I looked around and everyone was just in awe. That eye contact during his singing everyone talks about is true. He makes sure to share with us what it is he feels and we feel it and let him know as he finished singing.
Time to sign books! We were up towards the front of the line and in no time David was before us, as gracious and welcoming as ever. He signed my book for my granddaughter as I told him she couldn’t make it because of school and that my own signed book was at home because Bebe from The Voice had him sign one for me in New Jersey, as I pointed to my button. He said, “Oh yeah” (as he looked at the button), “that’s great!” I put my hand out; he gave me a firm handshake. I thanked him and he said, “Thank you for coming.” Oh so fast.
I went to the side and started recording as he chatted and signed books. Suddenly the alarm on my cell phone went off playing Zero Gravity! Uh oh. David looked up at me as I turned five shades of red! I was mortified and explained that it was my alarm. Leave it to David to ease my embarrassment. He smiled and then started singing Zero Gravity along with my phone! LOL! My hands were busy trying to hold the camera steady so I decided to just let it play out.

Zero Gravity - Looking at me
I spoke to David’s Mom, Lupe, in Spanish, letting her know how much we appreciate and love David. She gave thanks in the same manner David does. I gave her The Voice button which she took and looked at as I told her about this site and she thanked me again.
The ladies and I walked around the bookstore taking a picture here and there. Watching David interact with his fans is so heartwarming. He sure is one special young man. I left the bookstore and the first thing I did when I got in my car was blast “Something ‘Bout Love!” Then I picked up my parents and we all headed home.
Eight hours of driving in one day to see David. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I wake up early each morning and log in – I start with this site and jump to others and get my fill of all DA news (including watching youtube). I envy all of you have have seen, spoken, heard David in person. When will I ever get the chance to look at those beautiful eyes?
My friends laugh at me and last year when some relatives came to visit, I almost got into a huge fight with my sister because she was so sarcastic (even hurtful) when she knew a nephew from DC sent me David’s cds (practically called me a cougar!)
I bought COS – but took off the jacket when I read it. So the list goes on and on why I am like a thief doing my fangirling for David.
Thank you for all the good times I have had with this site. I feel I am blessed having found a cure to my lonely days and nights. My husband understands a little but I cannot be sure if he is just humoring me or what.
Have a good weekend everyone!

Dja!
You had such a fun day! I bet he will remember you for that alarm ZG.
Interviewer: “So, David tell us about your most memorable book signing with fans?”
David: ” OH! There was this woman in Las Vegas who stood next to the table where I was signing books. While she was filming me, her phone alarm went off. It was ME singing Zero Gravity! Haha!”
Interviewer: “What did you do?”
David: “I sang along! I love to sing even when it is awkward. I can’t help myself. I sang the whole song! Haha!”
Priceless moment, Dja!
And because we need this picture in every thread:
It has to be smaller so it will not cover the sidebar to the right. It still packs a punch , eh?

It is so nice to always meet people from this site and I also love to read what you write. David was amazing that day. It is really something to see him in person and words just can’t say the feeling that a person gets when you meet him. He always is so kind and nice to everyone he meets and as old as I’m, he takes your breath away. An amazing voice. Thank-you for the buttons…. nice video and really nice article…

I just had to share this with all of you. I visited Snarky Archies this morning and they have a picture of Paul Anka next to David’s asking if anyone sees any similarities. What made me laugh out loud was what was written under the pictures:
“Violet4ever sent us this cover. Who even is Paul Anka?? I had to youtube. I found a song I know. Sort of.”
Talk about feeling really OLD!!!! And the song they found was Put Your Head on My Shoulder – oh, how I remember that one!

Djafan, Love the screencaps and your shoes pic turned out much better than mine, thanks for getting it. We’ll have to do this again real soon. Had so much fun and you’re right the long drive was well worth.
I lost my wallet yesterday and usually I would be in a turmoil, but I just turned on my David CD and went about canceling all my credit cards, getting a duplicate Driver’s License and medical insurance cards. Then I got on The Voice and read Dakgal’s fun mouse tale again along with listening to Angels from Vegas and thought David’s voice just makes anything and everything better. Now it’s just a waiting game to get new ones before I leave for vacation on the 13th.
I was looking forward to getting his single on the 13th but since they’ve put it of til the 20th I don’t think I can get it till I get home. I won’t have a computer with me. That means I won’t be able to help with his first day numbers. Does anyone have any suggestions?

dja, MY favorite part of YOUR day was when your phone alarm went off, signaling to you that it was your regular lunch time. (LOL) You couldn’t have planned it better if you’d tried! The look on David’s face was priceless and what a guy, to ‘ease your embarrassment’ by singing along with himself. Without saying a word to you, he made you feel better.
And people wonder how we could love a nineteen year old!

Djafan, great recap. Any “visit” with David is an all day affair, but, when it’s over, everyone is left with the same feeling: “It was so worth it”. Beacuse David transcends time and space, it is never about quantity, and always about quality. Having David look into your eyes for one second is no small matter. He plants a seed with his eyes that never stops bearing fruit, and his warmth and nurturing become your constant companion. I would have never thought this was possible, but I live it every day, so I know it’s true.
Archiesfa4life, all of us Baby Boomers remember Paul Anka, who shot to stardom in the mid ’50s with “Diana” and went on to have a long, successful career as a singer and Vegas-type performer. He also wrote the famous Tonight Show intro for Johnny Carson. I read somewhere that he is considering producing a Broadway Show of his life and music, and when asked who he would like to play him, he immediately named David. Could you imagine David on Broadway every night, singing “Puppy Love” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder”. On the other hand, it might be a stretch for David to sing “You’re Having My Baby” (LOL).

Letter from Matt Clayton …
Hey guys,
Matt Clayton here. I knew something might be up when the friend requests started popping up a day after I wrote a certain status update on Facebook, a few weeks ago. I haven’t had that many friend requests in one day since, say, January 2009 and it didn’t take me long to figure out what might be the cause of it. So, after some internet sleuthing (two can play at this game :)), I wasn’t surprised to find that the surge in friend requests was because of a little Archuleta mystery going on. I’d be lying if I said that I haven’t enjoyed reading about all the speculation. And I hate to even take away some of the mystery. But, I hate to mislead any of you.
So, are you ready for some answers? I’m not sure how much I can share with you about what went on while I was in NYC, but I can tell you this, I was not the photographer for David’s album cover. That was left in the capable hands of a much better photographer whose work I greatly admire. David is very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with this photographer. You will not be disappointed with the results. I was, however, on set but used in a different capacity.
I appreciate all of you that have emailed and sent messages with kind words. David’s very lucky to have such a supportive and enthusiastic fan base. I’m grateful for the kindness you’ve shown me.
Sincerely, your friend…who will spell ‘Thia’ correctly for the rest of his life,
Matt

Oh boy…All of Como La Flor this weekend! This interview on Selena’s website!
SAN ANTONIO — David Archuleta began his singing career with the music of Selena Quintanilla-Perez.
“One of the first songs I learned was ‘Como La Flor,’” said the former “American Idol” runner-up.
On Sunday, Archuleta will pay homage to one of his musical inspirations during the 30th annual Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio.
The Tejano Music Awards are part of the Tejano Music Historic Weekend, which also includes the 7th Annual Tejano Music National Convention and the 6th Annual Tejano Academy Awards.
Archuleta said he sang parts of “Como La Flor” a cappella during his tour last year, including a stop in San Antonio.
He can’t wait to return and sing the full version Sunday.
“It’ll be fun,” Archuleta said, “to finally get to do that and sing one of the songs that had a big impact on me.”

Thought I’d repeat my post from Snowangelz. Of course, I’m a pre-babyboomer! Oh my!
Old? That would be me. I was around to see Paul’s career pretty much from the start. He, of course, was a genius/prodigy having been a singer/songwriter from his early teens. Here is his website — the intro is interesting when you hear him singing She’s a Lady (the Tom Jones song which Paul wrote); he shouts out “sing it” with the same inflection David uses. Cool! His bio is fascinating — amazing work ethic and prolific songwriting, from his first hit ‘Diana’ to ‘This Is It’ co-written with Michael Jackson last year. At 67, he is still performing: “I perform because I still need to,” he says. “It’s one of those things that’s in your blood.” Sounds like someone else we know.

And Dja, love this recap and the vids. Awesome is all I can say. Wasn’t that so much fun filming him while signing all his books. I loved doing that at the Orem book signing. That girl was so cute when she tweeted about that “Zero Gravity” ring. So funny that was you! Tee hee:):):)
And driving any distance is so worth it to see David. My first experience driving any longer than 30 minutes to see him was to Rexburg, and as Pattirae and I were talking this morning, we are going to forgo VIP’s this year, so that we can use that money to go to all the within driving distance concerts with his tour for this album and fly to wherever his last concert is too. I don’t care what my family says anymore! They are so critical of my passion with him, but heck, they all have passions of their own, and I can have mine too! So there, family!!! I will do what I want. (OK, now I got that off my chest!) Pattirae and I were also talking about the single pic this morning and we were talking about who would have ever thought that we could get twitterpated (sp?) over a 19 year old at out age. We need help bad!!
Abs, you are my hero!! Love the MGR. You are amazing and so quick to keep us on our toes!! And when you posted that huge pic yesterday, well let’s just say, it is now my wallpaper on my phone, thank you very much!!
And Sweet, so sorry about your loss of your wallet, but I so understand how listening to DA can make things so much easier to deal with! Just yesterday I had a really bad day with my two married sons being jealous of the relationship I have with my married daughter and her little family and letting me know about it! They say I show favoritism with her kids. I was absolutely crushed, because I have tried so hard to be a good grandma and to show all my 10 grandchildren how much I love them and to spend quality time with them when they are with me, and I cried for awhile after, and then I laid down on my bed and turned on my ipod and “Desperate” came on right off! For some reason that song is one that I really love, and the words just made me feel peaceful and I was able to stop crying. And then “Somethig ‘Bout Love” came on right after that in the rotation and just completely soothed my broken heart. He just has a way with reaching deep into my soul when I listen to him sing. He is one in a million!!

DJA—thanks for driving those 8 hrs and sharing your story and video– when your alarm went off and David looked — your video makes it seem he is looking right at ME–and abrra’s MGR has him looking at ME every 43 seconds–so thanks for a little slice of heaven–then there’s the album cover–and I’m in fantasy land all day.
What impresses me about David looking to see where the song was coming from –is that he could have ( which I’m sure many celebs would) made it a “me” moment and really drew more attention to himself–instead he kept his complete attention focused on the person he was signing a book for–as if they were the only person there.
VLM–I feel your pain, I think most of us have been through a similar situation–it’s nice to have the understanding of our flesh friends and family ( as emilyluvsarchie puts it), but if they choose to stay in the dark, you ALWAYS have your friends and family here. Your fellow Archunuts!
Angelica– “If David ever came within 2 hours of me I’d probably shoot out the door so fast I would be half way there before I realized I had forgotten the car!! LOL!”
Now , that’s hilarious, but no doubt true. See what you made me do? Ha Ha

That’s a good description. When I saw it I thought of a courageous naval officer in the Napoleonic War, like Captain Horatio Hornblower, standing on the deck of his ship, the fate of his crew and country weighing heavily on his mind…

Ahem– I don’t mean to be dense, but it seems to come naturally to me. I don’t understand the whole thing about pre-ordering the album and the fan edition thingy from Davids site. Will it give you a i-tune or Amazon link? And why a free download of SBL ? Isn’t the whole idea to order and pay for his single so it charts and he gets $$.
Anybody help me? Please

Let me try this. Below is taken from David’s official site.
“On July 20th, right here on the site, you will be able to pre-order David’s brand new, upcoming album!”
** You enter your info to buy his new CD and maybe get a code#(for itunes) for when it come out in the fall. Or wait for an email with a download link.
” When you pre-order you’ll be able to receive “Something ‘Bout Love” as an instant download, but that’s not all.”
**This song is on the CD. You can get it July 20th instead of waiting for the Cd to be released. Reads to me like there is no extra charge, but they will count the instant download as a sale for the Billboard chart.
” Also on the 20th, you’ll be able to pre-order a very special fan edition of David’s new album!”
**When I read this, it made me think we will get something like Not A Very Good Liar or Parachutes & Airplanes as a bonus( some song that isn’t on the released CD) if we buy the “fan” package edition. We get the chance to buy 2 CD’s and download the single.
” We’ll give you all the details on what it is soon!”
**All will become clear on the 20th of July. Jive isn’t about to cheat David out of any sales numbers. (famous last words?)

You’re wonderful to see,
You oughta be in pictures,
Oh what a hit you would be!
Your voice would thrill a nation,
Your face would be adored,
You’d make a great sensation
with wealth and fame your reward;
And if you should kiss the way you kiss,
When we’re alone,
You’d make ev’ry girl and man
A fan worshiping at your throne.
You oughta shine as brightly
As Jupiter and Mars;
You oughta be in pictures,

Well, guess we have to leave out the kissy stuff for now.

Angelica – just watched your video and Dakgal – you’re right – something about it does pull at your heartstrings. Of course this is just what I think he’s thinking – no one really knows – but I was thinking he looks like being at the Capitol singing for 7/4th and thinking about the troops, visiting all those museums and historical places and how we got to where we are today with our freedom — and then them announcing all his achievements — it’s gotta be a little mind-blowing for him how far he’s come – and yet he still is so appreciative of how far he’s come. And then again, I have to laugh when he giggles on that Fox Interview when they saw “best selling author” — David giggles as if “Yea! I still don’t know how all this is happening to me”. haha Like he’s wondering too!!! I love the contemplative look though — I feel like I’m watching him on the BIG SCREEN!

Here’s my entry for the 20 most beautiful issue. I’m worried – does it make them see what I see?
I want to nominate David Archuleta. David was the first runner-up on American Idol, season 7. Since then he has reached platinum in his album sales, and his first single “Crush” was a huge hit, selling almost 2 million digital copies. Last year David released a Christmas album called Christmas from the Heart. On it he sings in English, Spanish, French and Latin. This summer David published a book called Chords of Strength, that deserved a spot on the New York Times best seller list. David has toured numerous times, even in Asia and UK. He has an album coming out in the fall and will tour after the release. Right now he has a single out called “Something ’bout Love”, which has gotten a very positive response from fans and radio stations.
David’s outer beauty is obvious – the flawless skin, the thick, black hair, those hazel eyes framed by long, black eyelashes, the killer smile, which is always sincere. David’s sporty figure is also easy on the eye 😉
David may be small in physical stature, but his stage-presence and ability to capture any human being in a magical moment by just looking at them is hugely mind-blowing.
David is always polite, even to paparazzi. Every interviewer has commented on David’s incredibly down-to-earth attitude, and the fact that he never acts or pretends. David is very firm about setting a good example, and he doesn’t like revealing or raunchy clothing, anything overtly sexual or rude. He never swears and his band members have said they’ve never heard David raise his voice.
David cares about his fans as individuals and appreciates every single scream he hears coming from the audience at his concerts. During his book tour, he personalized every book that he signed, never once complaining about being tired or hungry. He said he would stay for as long as it took to sign everyone’s book. He even signed books for fans that couldn’t attend his signings, and even international fans could then order them from Bookends. I am one of those lucky fans who own a copy of Chords of Strength signed by David, even though I live in Finland!
David’s voice is just as beautiful as he himself. People have tried to describe it, but often find themselves at loss for words. There’s something velvety, at times a bit raspy, airy and even sensual in David’s powerful instrument that it takes you to a different universe everytime you hear it.
David is very involved in charity work. Invisible Children, Make a Wish, Angels for a Cause, Rising Star Outreach, Crush MS, Crush Kid’s Cancer and Jamie Oliver’s food revolution are all examples of David’s giving spirit. David visited the White House recently. He was with a group of kids from the Children’s Miracle Network. In every interview he emphasized the kids and how amazing they are and how the charity works. He didn’t talk about meeting the president, and when mr Obama was standing right in front of them, David kept watching the KIDS watching the president. It is all about the kids for David.
I could keep writing forever about why I think David is the most beautiful creature on this planet, but unfortunately no words can describe him in a way that would do him justice. David Archuleta is eye-, ear- and soul-candy.

good morning everyone!
More of my thoughts,,,:)(oh dear!)
I love gardening, so I do my fair share of pickin, pullin, pluckin and hummin. I know it won’t surprise anyone here that I have been humming SBL. What surprised me, however, when I listened to myself, was the part of the song I was continually humming. It wasn’t the “Oh, oh, ohs”,(so catchy), but this:
“When you were young,
Scared in the night,
Waiting for love to come and make it right.”
Sitting on my bum in the garden, I couldn’t even remember what words came next, so I finally went in and checked.
“Your day will come,
the past is gone,
So take your time and live and let live.”
Oh man! I overwhelmed myself! Not everyone may have romantic love, or even loving friendships in their lives, but All have known the love of a caregiver,,,or maybe not.
I think David intuitively is taking us to that Essential Love when we “know” that when we need love, it will be there for us,,,, or it’s not.
I work with families of infants and toddlers. This love and knowledge of “that love” is not there for many children, and this can “hurt” them for life. I think this is what he is talking about, out in the middle of a catchy, joyful, summer pop song. For me, in this song, David takes you to that painful spot, then tells you what you needed to hear when you were two: “It’s going to be alright. Hold on tight.”
I am overwhelmed.

So… he is our “Mary Poppins”?
Seems to sweep in, clean up the room, make our medicine sweet and take us to unheard of, imaginary places that put the rest of life into perspective: “Have a little, DA. Eat cake on the ceiling. Jump into pictures. See love where you thought there was only pain. Welcome to the reality of Life.”

Poof #106.
I am glad you wrote what you wrote. I’ve been feeling kind of alone with how SBL affects me. Somehow, when you mentioned “that painful spot”, I felt some relief that at last someone felt it too – it’s not just me. I wrote down my thoughts about SBL on the second night of listening to it on continuous loop. I’ve hesitated sharing this because I was afraid to come out like a drama queen amidst all the excitement of the new single release and then the heart-melting single cover art. It is truly mindboggling how much this young man has affected me for the past couple of years, considering how calm, cool and unperturbed I am to my peers, friends and family. And yet, this:
“Yesterday when SBL was released, I listened to it on repeat and got chills every time. Yes. Those chills. Undeniable. I remember those same chills when I listened to his first performance of WYSYLM in Arizona via cellcast. I also had the same chills when I heard Crush as it first debuted in Z100 radio, and when the Crush video was released earlier than scheduled. I had it again the day after the last day of the AI7 tour in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Those chills were like an anxiety attack, akin to a foreboding of sorts. Something inexplicably exciting is going to happen after this, but what will it be? On all these occasions, I felt weak yet exhilarated, like my knees were giving in, even when I was seated. I could feel my heart beating in my head, in my arms, in my belly, all over my body. It is an unusual feeling that you never forget. And it happened again yesterday when I first heard SBL. And with the chills came the tears as always. I was teary and in denial that it was because of so much pride for David, that he outdid himself again. Bravo, David!
It is my second night of listening to the full version of SBL. And I can’t sleep because I am tearful once more. But tonight the tears were a realization of something else. As I listened to the continuous play of SBL at the official DA site, the tears came again but not because I was happy for David. The tears streamed every time for the length of the song because I could feel David’s pain… his pain…(?!) It was masked behind all the synthetic sounds and the upbeat tempo. Why am I feeling this? Am I alone in recognizing the sadness in his voice? I’ve read all the enthusiastic, positive reviews, the exhuberant comments, the loving excitement for the song. Someone even tweeted him to make a dance video, and he replied that it was a heartfelt song, puzzled that it was received differently. When I saw that tweet, it confirmed what I felt about SBL. But then, how is it that David allowed the song to sound that way, like it’s such a happy tune? Why is the song such a paradox in itself? Then I recalled what David said in his SomethingPitchy interview. He could not suddenly come up with a dark, mature, brooding cd because he was still young and would like to show his age in his songs. It would be very out of character for him to do so, as gleaned from his less popular dark songs, like Falling and Desperate, both of which I believe are great songs but terribly underrated. Although there are hopeful lyrics infused in these songs, it cannot be denied that most of his fans see him as a bright ray of sunshine that could not be darkened by the negativities of life. But David is a human being and experiences what regular people go through. I sensed a feeling of loneliness in the song. Is it because of his sudden rise to stardom? The distance from and situation of his family? The challenges of his faith in show business? Then a myriad of questions go through my mind. The love he sings about: is it romantic, platonic, familial, humanitarian, philosophical, theocentric? We will always be guessing because we respect his privacy even if we are aware of some turmoils that have happened in his life. But then again, it is because of his celebrity status that we conjure an image of him that is far beyond his own expectations of himself. This is the paradox David has to live up to, and this is quite a burden in itself.
On the practical side, SBL has to sound upbeat and electronically charged to be radio-friendly. It is the trend nowadays for hit songs, and I bemoan the fact that these hits make the singers sound all alike – synthesized. It’s always been difficult for me to differentiate which are songs of Akon, Kanye West, Craig David, Ne-Yo or Chris Brown. Sorry to say this, but their recorded singing voices all sound alike to me.
Thankfully, David’s voice is so distinct, that even some autotuned parts of SBL could not make it indistinct. He has even surprised me with his vocal range in it, considering that he has had issues with his high notes. On the lines in the refrain “when the world falls down like the rain, it will bring you to your knees”, his highest notes on “world” and “bring” have a tremor to his voice that punches the heart. It is soul-piercing, just as much as his toned down, low notes at the end of the bridge on “there’s something ’bout love that breaks your heart, woh oh oh oh”. It is a sadly sung phrase, like the energy was sucked out of him. And every time he sings the word “breaks”, it is very emphatic. You feel the angst in his voice. It IS a heartfelt song, ingeniously presented as a foot-stomping, head-bopping, body-shaking song that ticks all the right boxes in the criteria of a radio hit.
Right now, I could not bring myself to dance to SBL because of how it makes me feel. But that’s just me. Maybe that will change when I watch him sing it live in a concert with the full emotive power of a DLG performance. Now that’s something to look forward to.
03 July 2010 4:30 A.M.”
I wrote all of this before David came out with his latest vlog and recent interviews about SBL. He has tried to explain what the song is about, referring to the difficulties that come along with relationships based on love. He has mentioned that it could be about a family member or someone close to you. That was a good enough hint which has satisfied my curiosity. And I certainly look forward to the MTV of SBL, the visuals of which might change my mood about the song.
Nevertheless, I am always in awe of David’s ability to draw out emotions in me that I never experienced with any other singer or any type of music before. After reading what I wrote and re-reading the last few chapters of COS, I have concluded that David is an old soul who has come back to remind me how to live my life well. I certainly have the tendency to look at the dark side of things too much, and I need the kind of spirit David has to keep bringing the light back into them.

Angelica (Hi ^_^)
For me, his expression evinces the discomfort of having it “all about ‘him'”, when he would rather have it “all about Him”.
He knows something of the pitfalls and lures of “being more recognizable” than others. Even in our position as fans, we cannot help but want more publicity for him. The dichotomy is, that could make it more challenging for him to remain the person we wish everyone could see – the tender and inexpressible creation of ‘being’ to which he has surrendered himself.
We (sorta) want people to be inspired by DA. DA wants people to be inspired.
I trust his source of inspiration to carry him. Can I? Am I willing for it to also carry me?
Dear DA,
For your vulnerability and strength, your delight and sobriety, the things you worry about and the things you do not: thank you.
Just do what you feel is right and we will be here.

You are not alone in your feelings about this song at all, and I am glad you put words to them. When I listened to the song for a day I realized it was one of those songs with more power and anointing than meets the eye. Several times it stopped me in my tracks and took my breath away…at different parts… as the lyrics sank into my “unguarded heart” because after all this is “just pop music!” I really can’t even put words to it yet– and I have tried. So, I really appreciate your offering.

Embe #99, I’m amazed you have so complete & accurate an insight to who David is & what he stands for since you have followed David from afar, never having seen or met David in person, in THIS life anyway. A very good argument for why, to others who don’t understand, we have no real explanation why we adore him. We, young & old, male & female, all races, believers & non-believers, loved him deeply in another life & have been searching for HIM in this life…No I’m not crazy, just a little weird. 🙂
Ascphil #114, Your post in response to Poof, I found myself catching my breath as I read your words about SBL. The first time I heard SBL, I felt it sounded to “poppy” for my taste. Then Djafan & Angelica opened my eyes to the meaning of the song. I was wrong in listening to the music & beat of the song instead of the lyrics. So I listened again & again. What you wrote is so close to what I feel about the song and what David is sharing with us in the only way he can, through melodies & lyrics. Everything you wrote…could have come me only not nearly as eloquent & well written, so I want to thank you for letting me know there is another who gets the same feeling about SBL & David, & perhaps many others feel it too. That it’s not JUST a great “radio-friendly, POP song” but a deeply heartfelt song as David described it.
I am amazed how ONE photo can cause such hysteria! I wonder, are we the only fanbase who goes bonkers over every thing concerning David, from what he eats to what he does on a flight to what he wears to EVERY LITTLE THING??? We are a crazy, fanatic & fun fanbase for sure, but even David has to shake his head in total confused amazement at the way we react to him & what he does. No wonder he tries to keep his tweets at a minimum & his blogs at once every couple of weeks…it’s to keep the frenzy down & the heart rates even! :lol

Ascphil – Thank you so much for your post. When I first heard Not A Very Good Liar my first thought was this is about Lupe. David deserves privacy and he also deserves time for his feelings. He has said these new songs are about him and his thoughts and who he is. David has said that he wants to have songs with positive messages and he is able to make songs that are about heartfelt, difficult feelings have hopeful, positive messages. When I heard Something ‘Bout Love I felt…he’s talking about how difficult the changes in his family situation are but that love is still worthwhile and we need to keep trying. He has said that he has feelings and gets sad like everyone else, but we always see him with that big trademark smile that could light up the sun. I’m sure the smile is genuine and that he is happy and grateful to be with fans and doing the music he loves to do. But he’s a person who has gone through life situations like the rest of us and he has found a way through his music to show us that there’s always a way through the pain to something better. “It IS a heartfelt song, ingeniously presented as a foot-stomping, head-bopping, body-shaking song that ticks all the right boxes in the criteria of a radio hit.” Somehow he is able to incorporate his deepest feelings and present them in a way that people will respond to and hopefully understand the meaning behind while they’re tapping their feet and dancing to the great radio hit music. Sorry this got so long.

Ascphil,
No need to apologize for your long post. I enjoyed every word and understand what you are saying. SBL, co-written by David, is so much more than radio friendly pop pap. It carries layers of meaning that everyone can relate to and his delivery of the lyrics conveys the sadness within us ALL at times. Love hurts. Do we not all agree with this message? We have all experienced this truth in a myriad of forms since we were little children, “scared in the night.” But the truth is we need love and endure the pain because we must and because the joy far outweighs the pain.
David…what can I say that you haven’t already said so well…he just makes you understand that we are all the same, deep down, and we are not alone. They want, and he needs, for the sake of his career to be radio friendly. Alright then. He will take to the airwaves and lay down these gifts from his soul all wrapped up in friendly packaging. And radio will never be the same.

Asphil and Nancy – thanks for what you said – and I wholeheartedly agree with both of you! David could never just sing a “POP” song without it having a deeper and more meaningful connection to it.

Thank you so much for your incredible posts.
I recently played SBL for my sister – a fan, yes, ODD’er, not quite there. She had no preconceived expectations or ideas or personal desires regarding this single.
All I can hear is her subdued yet heartfelt reaction as she sat very still, quietly and intently listening, “oh,” ,”my”, “wow,” “ohmygosh.” She got it. “Wow, that is really good. Boy, his voice. How he sings it. Can I listen again.”

Poof…I caught the angst on first listen in this “you BLAME yourself”, the sound and tone in that word captivated me. Bebe and I discussed at length. Upon hearing the whole song the parts you’ve quoted hit me the same way. Imagine me driving blasting SBL with tears streaming down my face…he is a genius.
Ascphil…yes to every single sentiment you shared (((hugs)))
SF, Bluesky, Nancy, Emifriend….really appreciate your heartfelt comments! Thank you
Time to listen to SBL…

Hi Ascphil
Aren’t you glad you shared? A lot of people felt what you felt. I’m just not so “quick” on the uptake. I was totally pulled in by the joyful beat. But, maybe I will be like a lot of other people; “Caught Unawares,,, then gently whacked long side the head! What is important, to me, is that he is out there, helping us think and feel more than we did before he came along.
Hugs to all.

Been busy with family today but been checking in to read the discussion regarding “Something ‘Bout Love”. I was so enamored of the pop beat and melody when I first heard the song that I didn’t want to stop to analyze the lyrics because I sensed they were a little heavier than a normal pop song. But of course they are; David never sings a song without a message. Also, since these new songs are more about him, we can expect more profound lyrics than those from his first cd.
David tweeted a twitpic from San Antonio, of two children doing a mexican dance. His comments were: “how awesome is this kid” and “haha” It reminded me of a very similar pic of David and his sister at that same age.

Ascphil – Thanks for the welcoming group hug! Abrra has been encouraging me to come out of lurkdom and overcome my shyness and fear that I’m not at the writing caliber of the rest of you. Look what your post made me do.
The things we do because of David. I am so computer-challenged. I never thought I’d be looking at fan sites (more times a day than I care to admit) or on twitter or looking at You Tube videos (thank goodness for David’s wonderful fans!) or going to as many VIP concerts as possible (and no, I can’t explain to non-David fans who don’t have ODD why I need to go to the same concert more than once, twice or three times). Thank you all for making me feel I’m not alone in this.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who has those feelings about SBL (and NAVGL). He is an amazing man who is able to make very profound lyrics and messages in a great melody. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the songs he has on the new CD for us!

Poof- I’m so happy you wrote about this subject.
This song is sheer poety–cleverly set to a happenin beat- he has taken every thought you all have so eloquently expressed and condensed them down to just a FEW simple words that speak VOLUMES. He has us analyzing and putting deep meaning into each individual word. Each individual person relates to this song with their own experiences -with all kinds of love- and comes away with a positive feeling. How does he do that?
What I really love about this song is -these words ( which he has put in their language) are going to eventually sneak into young peoples minds and get them to think about the meaning of the song- because even at their tender ages they can relate to it in one way or another.
I know I haven’t expressed this the way I wanted to–I need some David to give me some lessons!
Happy Birthday FG

I think the lyrics in this song are the type that will rise up in people as they walk down scary, dark, unhappy places.. Sort of like “you might be right The walls are high The sky is higher
And ,yes, I know, the pain is strong But love is stronger” and “there’s a future worth fighting for” and ” Be still my soul, the Lord is on thy side.” And sometimes, that is all it takes to help a person get thru something. I know I held on to Billy Crocket’s “Death can’t bury love” tight for a long time on my grief journey, a line I’d heard years before in a song I didn’t even particularly like, but it kept me going. One line at a time, encouraging us to hold strong and believe, because this is what works for David. Surely, it is going to impact our children for good.

Emifriend–Thanks for helping me on that–positive words that are made of glue that wiggle their way into your mind and are always there for you to call on.
With the rest of the songs on David’s new album, I wonder how many buried corners of my mind are going to have the cobwebs swept away.

#88 Dakgal, I just said close to the same thing on the youtube site. There is something that pulls at the heartstrings in this MGR. Mr. Archuleta is definitely an enigma!
Thanks Angelica for the MGR. Now one of my favs1
Bebe, glad you like the shoe shot. I did send it over to Snowangels for TOfan.
Abrra, I have borrowed a laptop to take on vacation, but not sure if I can purchase from itunes with someone else’s computer. I think I can pre-order the album on the OS website though. I guess I’ll find out on the 20th. Thanks for getting the pics up.

David looks so good in that SBL pic, that it will probably be banned from being used as a billboard to promote the song. This is because it will create too much of a distraction for drivers as they pass by it on the highway.
If there is such a thing as being “too” good looking, David might be it. I was always afraid that was going to happen, and, alas, it has.

Kinda like that mall lady ” Your Ricky Archuleta aren’t you” I say no. She walks away. Bwhahahaha
If I were that lady I would never confess that was me. Hahahah

Just finished reading this thread and want to say thanks to everyone that commented on how SBL has affected them. Thank you for sharing your feelings and thought with such sincerity. It is a song with much depth and draws different feelings with each listen.
Embe, I loved what you said about David in your entry for Portrait Mag. IMO, David is over and above all other nominees no matter who they may be. 🙂

Love that vlog. He mentioned the new pic for the single cover and seemed to get really excited when he started talking about the “rest of the pictures,” from the photo shoot. Oh dear. I think he has it in for us.
“Sorry for my sticky sweatiness. It feels good on my throat and…I don’t know, *looks at armpit* on my skin. *snorts* Idk, I guess I just like it…”
Ah HAA!! Here is all the proof I need that what I have said all along is true! He enjoys his sweat. He never uses a towel on stage even though they are right next to him and it is pouring off him like rain. Just wipes with his hand. Like that does any good. Works for me though. So there you are.
1)He loves his own sweat.
2)He apparently loves the new pics coming out.
3)He hates us and wants us to die.

Good evening David fans…
I believe that we have had an epic article…thanks djafan…and the comments and discussions by everyone are fantastic.
The pictures of David introduced here, even the ones besides his album cover are beyond anything I could imagine. Bliss has given us a wonderful description so I will not compete with that.
We have the striking lyrics of a song given by steno, that describe David so perfectly that now we might believe even more, that David was here before. Thanks for the reminder SF on that one…
The two MGRs by Angelica and Abrra, I love so much. #85, a fantastic picture of David in red by Bebe…there, I had to catch my breath…It seems that throughout these pictures and comments we are seeing a turning point. But then, David himself has made the turning point. David is determined to tell us all about himself like a boyfriend sets out to do with his new girlfriend. It all started with the writing of his book and now we are going to be able to know him even more through his songs. David is all about what is real and caring and loving and giving…his messages are there for us to find.
Then we have in the comments, the welcomes to new friends, the Happy Birthday to FG!!!
David has completed the day with a wonderful VLOG…We are so fortunate…
Oh and David is…Friday’s Child, Who is Loving and Giving…

ROTFL!!! You’re hilarious, and you noticed the snort, too!!! Couldn’t resist mentioning it!
He seemed kind of loopy in the vlog though. Heehee!
And am still laughing at: “3) He hates us and wants us to die.”
Gosh, we’re such crazy people. And I love it.

SUNGLASSES?!
He has a pair of sunglasses hanging on his shirt!! I can’t believe, but am very glad
David was wearing SUNGLASSES! He never wears sunglasses, except once at a performance or just playing around. He seems to think he’s not “cool” enough to wear sunglasses. He’s kinda strange about his perception of himself. 🙂
Bet mama Lupe MADE him wear sunglasses! 😆
