If You Can Make it There, You’ll Make it Anywhere…
Posted by Abrra on Tuesday, June 15, 2010
With the news that David’s book “Chords of Strength” made #15 on the New York Times best seller non-fiction list, I began to wonder how a book makes it to the list. I was interested to read that the New York Times “tracks” a book (not every book published) they deem a potential best seller and ask 4,000 bookstores, both chain and independent, to report sales. Other times they are alerted by the publisher to a book that has gained a fast rise in sales. The fact that David’s first attempt at something outside the music world made it to this standard in publishing is astonishing.
He is hard at work doing interviews on national television and local radio stations, as well as meeting and signing books for those fortunate enough to attend a book signing. This is a smart move rather than simply relying on word of mouth or fan sites to promote the product. According to Alan T. Sorensen of Stanford Business School, who studied sales, the majority of book buyers look to the Times list to see what is worth reading. Making the list is huge for David in that he is an unknown in the world of writers. Consider how many copies of his book have been or will be gifted over the next 6 months. Or how many who never heard of Idol or him, will pick up that book from a store display and buy it. The snowball effect for him is obvious. Buy a book. Buy a CD. Become a fan for life!

One last thing. Bestsellers can play a significant role in the movie industry. David is iconic in that most fans agree he may be the best choice to star in a movie adapted from “Chords of Strength.” Put on a pair of 3-D glasses and imagine with me a twenty foot David defending Midnight and Cloudy’s honor from the evil tomcat who comes a-courting!

When I mention to people (non-fans) that David’s book is #15 on the NY Times Best Seller List, they look at me in disbelief! But, I can tell it does impress them and I just smile at their reaction. This is so huge for David and I love that this is happening for him. I also loved that Mr. Garcia from Penguin Publishing has clarified (for doubters)and stated that the book was written by David himself in his own words. I really do wonder how many non-fans will pick up the book out of curiosity and instantly become a fan because of what they read. He is so extraordinary, fascinating, thoughtful, generous, gifted, funny, sincere, humble, giving, and down right adorable. This adventure has made him so happy—the book signings were incredible (SLC & Orem.)You could just feel how excited he is about the whole thing. I do hope he is able to have more signings in the future–sounds like he is working on it. Looking forward to Rexburg on Saturday and seeing all my wonderful David friends that have come to mean so much to me. *hugs*

Abrra, Thank your for the information about NYT bestsellers. We kind of established that he is the youngest NYT bestseller. (Children’s books like Miley Cyrus’s don’t count.) Now do we know how many NYT bestselling authors also have platinum CD’s? (Looking at you Abrra). His achievements at a young age are just astounding.

I’m certainly looking forward to Rexburg this weekend (patience is being one of my virtues right now).
I can’t even comprehend a movie with David in it. They would have to have oxygen and de-fibs in great supply on hand as it would be such an epic event. What a dream!!

Abrra, thank you for the details about the process. So interesting.
Thanks Angelica for that fascinating slideshow — heartwarming.
Our ultimate thanks for all things wonderfully David must be directed to his parents who “… reminded me that my gift was not something to keep to myself, and that in fact, ‘even the Bible teaches us that we are not supposed to hide our light under a bushel; that we are instead supposed to let our light shine bright.'” How fortunate for us that a very young and very insecure David listened to his parents and began to share his gift. I’m sure I’m not the only one who shed many tears when reading those pages but inwardly applauded David for his courage. Truly, his light is dazzling!

Thank you for a very timely article and for a chance to celebrate! This is BIG TIME!
The New York Times Bestseller’s List is the most prestigious book list in the United States. Getting on this list is a HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT!! I couldn’t be more proud of David for making this list!
Libraries, schools, stores and people rely solely on this list for their book choices. Being on this list brings more attention to the book and could make the publisher promote it even more, leading to more sales. Barnes & Nobles sells New York Times best sellers at a discount which increases sales even more.
Bring on more book signings!
Angelica: Your slide show is magical! I couldn’t love it more.

Brought this over from Snarkies –Oh my gosh, you go David!
David is an ~ENTREPRENEUR
From Forbes.com list of 11 Teen Celebrity Entrepreneurs
David Archuleta, 18
Musician, actor, author
Defeated in the seventh season of American Idol by David Cook, Archuleta went on to release a self-titled album on Jive records that reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts, and a Christmas album in October 2009. He even customized a Christmas singing game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. He has played more than 100 live shows since Idol. This year he released an autobiography, Chords of Strength, and last year toured with fellow teen star Demi Lovato. He’s also guest-starred on Nickelodeon’s iCarly and Disney’s Hannah Montana.
On a lighter note–very late last night I posted an update of the things you should know to survive the oncoming storm. It can be found at the end of the last thread. Tee Hee

Bringing Dakgal’s posts over here from the last thread:
And while I’m on the subject, I think we have let ourselves slip into a lackadaisical attitude during this recent drought.
We have a David Hurricane season staring us smack in the face and with all the new music, videos, appearances, concerts and Lord knows what else, we have to be prepared. So I have taken the liberty of making a list to renew your awareness and what you WILL need for survival when you come to this site, because as witnessed tonight anything can appear at any time out of the blue!
1. Have your paddles fully charged _______
2. Have your oxygen tanks full _______
3. Have enough pillows thrown on the floor ( in case of fainting) _____
4. Have 911 on speed dial _______
5. It’s a good idea to have your life insurance paid up and
your will in order.
Oh, my bad–I left out some important instructions you should have:
Alert a family member or neighbor on what to do if they should find you in front of the computer….
Weeping silently but uncontrollably
Mumbling incoherently
Looking like you just stuck your finger in a light socket
Staring–unable to speak
In the fetal position in your chair
Babbling and drooling
Have them immediately gently guide you to a darkened room so you can lie down–put David’s Ave Maria on to play–and shut the door.. You’ll be fine–until the next time.
Be afraid–be very afraid!

Abrra, thanks for the heads up on The Bestseller List and for the great slide shows.
When it comes to promotion, nobody is a better promoter of David than the man himself. In many ways, this book signing tour gives his fans better access to him than his concert tours. His interaction with people is very personal and eye to eye, and you can see how utterly mesmerized and transfixed everyone who meets him becomes. It’s as if one is walking into another dimension after walking past David at a signing. I mean, you’re one person when you get on the line to meet him, and you are a different person after.
I would like to see David expand this book tour to many other cities. He doesn’t need PR, he just needs access to readers. Heck, he reduced the President of the United States to just another person in the room.

So did Clay Aiken’s memoir, “Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music In Your Life,” which he co-authored, and Fantasia’s “Life is Not a Fairytale.” But David remains the youngest!

Hi everyone. With all the excitement swirling around the book signings and meeting David, the actual content of the book has taken the proverbial back seat. This is what makes David so totally unique. No matter what David creates, it is always just him that is the most compelling aspect of him.
As for the book itself. I’m loving it. It’s so “David” in its honesty, humility and sincerity. At times, I get the same chills I get when I hear him sing, and, like everyone else, am learning so many things about David that I either didn’t know or had only a vague understanding. David is, above all else, our dear friend, and he relates to us as such. I guess you can say that I kinda like him.

A new article by Rexburg Standard Journal
David Archuleta comes to Rexburg for book signing, concert
Posted: Wednesday, June 16, 2010 4:18 pm
Tony Potter apotter@uvsj.com | 0 comments
David Archuleta will be up close and personal as well as rocking the stage this week in Rexburg.
Up close and personal
The book signing
6 p.m. Thursday at Deseret Book
Thursday at 6 p.m., Archuleta will be at Deseret Book signing copies of his new book “Chords of Strength.”
“He’ll personalize each book,” said Deseret Book manager Mike Jenkins. “A lot of authors don’t do that.”
Jenkins also said there is no time limit to Archuleta’s stay at the store. “He’ll stay until he has signed everyone’s book.”
Archuleta was unsure if he should write a book when approached with the idea by the publishers. “I’m only 19,” said Archuleta. “People usually do that later in life.” Yet despite fears of not having enough to say, and never having thought to write a book, Archuleta took the opportunity.
“There are some things I have gone through that are unique,” he said. “Thought processes I have are similar to other teenagers.”
Knowing that teenagers often question and doubt themselves helped motivate Archuleta to get his story written.
“I felt like sharing what I have seen in my life, the results of trials, how my life has been blessed,” he said.
“Chords of Strength,” which is No. 15 on the New York Times Best Sellers list, finds Archuleta discussing many aspects of his path to this point in his life, including career, faith and family.
“I hope [the book] will help in a way that people can get something out of it.
Rocking the stage
The concert
7:30 p.m. Saturday in BYU-Idaho’s Hart Auditorium
According to Don Sparhawk, concert coordinator at Brigham Young University-Idaho, “Since we sold out so quickly when David performed here in December [2009], we wanted to bring him back so others could have a chance to hear him.” Quickly means the show sold out in one day. A show at the Idaho Falls Civic Auditorium in March 2009 sold out in four minutes.
It goes without saying that Archuleta has some serious fans in eastern Idaho. “Idaho always has the loudest crowds,” Archuleta said, citing the close proximity Idaho shares to Utah, his home, as a possible reason. Though a little baffling, Archuleta, a runner-up in the seventh season of American Idol, is thrilled with his reception in this area.
“Idaho has always been so great.”
This show, part of BYU-Idaho’s Spirit Week activities, may or may not include new music for the fans. Archuleta wouldn’t give anything away. He has a new album coming out in the Fall, with the single arriving in July, both far enough in the future that Archuleta wouldn’t give up details.
“Because [Saturday’s show] is before the album cycle, there will be a lot of familiar songs, but there will also be some surprises. You’d better come and see.”
Though not drastically different in style, Archuleta said he’s wanting to show more of his personality in the new album.
“I’m young, but I still want meaning in the songs I sing, to have more of my personality and thoughts and ideas in them,” he said.
“I want them to be relatable to me, and I hope that will make them relatable to others.”
It seems everything about the concert is a mystery, except one thing: It is 100 percent Archuleta.
