Memorial Day
Posted by djafan on Monday, May 31, 2010
To ensure the sacrifices of America ’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, in December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and the president signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” P.L. 106-579, creating the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance. The commission’s charter is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity” by encouraging and coordinating commemorations in the United States of Memorial Day and the National Moment of Remembrance.
The National Moment of Remembrance encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation. As Moment of Remembrance founder Carmella LaSpada states: “It’s a way we can all help put the memorial back in Memorial Day.”

Taps
Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.
Fades the light;
And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise,
For our days,
‘Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
‘Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.
Listen to TAPS:
If you are able, please take a moment at 3pm today to think of those who gave their all for all of us.

Thank you for this timely article. I had not seen Taps (lyrics) only heard the music. Reading them give me a mental picture of a soul swirling, rising to meet God as the day’s light fades.
I still learn something new each day.

Thank you Angelica for the Memorial Day Post and the reminder of the Moment of Remembrance.
Abrra – I don’t know how to do it but your video was so amazing and thanks to David, gives us a sense of hope no matter how dark the day and night. I remember when he said that he wouldn’t sing a song that had no hope in it. It always lifts me up in time of need.
I know David loves to sing Patriotic Songs and I hope he is able to do that today.
Betsy – I did not know that your son served in the military in these past two years. I am thankful to your family and to him for giving of himself to make the world a safer place. I am so glad to hear he is home and safe now and you can rest. I hope that David’s music has helped you get through this time and brought you a sense of faith and hope.
ps Betsy – did you get the message from Rene about tomorrow?

Pabuckie: Another great find in that “God Bless America” video from “younger David”. That soothing quality in his voice was there from the very beginning.
New York welcomes David with beautiful weather. It’s 80 degrees here and sunny with not a cloud in the sky.
Prayers to the accident victim David tweeted about.
Brought this beautiful screencap posted by djafan over from the last thread.
Notice the twinkle in David’s eyes. Do you think it’s a reflection from the sun or from a new sense of confidence? Maybe both.

Thank you to all who have posted and commented here. I enjoy everything of this site immensely, and I check out this site at least 3-4 times a day even though my work day is usually 10 to 11 hours.
I downloaded “God Bls Amer (9_11_02 Fire Station #54 memorial)”in Oct ’08. I don’t remember exactly where I downloaded from. It is not the live version at the fire station, but I think it is the same version as the one in the video posted by pabuckie. You can download from my mediafire site. This “inspirational” folder is public, and you can download any song in this folder, including the rarely mentioned “Nature Boy” originally sung by Natalie Cole.

Thank you to those who commented on my video. I wanted to use Save the Day in a video. I wasn’t sure what approach I was going to take until I found this image.

It is about children who play at being a “superhero” only to grow up to be soldiers and become Superheros to the children of war torn countries. Ambassadors of hope despite the conditions. Betsy’s son Peter is a true American hero in anyone’s book. His personal sacrifice is immeasurable.

Hey Pabuckie…thanks to you I’ve deleted…didn’t realize it being a spoiler since I’ve read the book!
I’ve left the picture to click on on the right sidebar to the Salt Lake City Weekly for whoever would like to read.
Here’s the intro with no spoilers.
David Archuleta
David Archuleta may be young, but his memoir still inspires.
By Brandon Burt
There was a time when the writing of memoirs was solely the bailiwick of old people. In those days, the autobiographer had to wait at least until middle age before amassing enough experiences to fill an interesting tome.
Ah, but now we live in an accelerated era, an age when a callow youth can find himself rocketed to national celebrity through the auspices of a popular TV talent show—and then go on to write a pretty damned good book about it.
Obviously, the June 1 release of David Archuleta’s Chords of Strength will elicit howls of amusement from literary naysayers. And, admittedly, the very idea that a young man not yet in his 20s—whose claim to fame is having been a runner-up on Fox’s American Idol a two years ago—could dare publish a memoir comes as something as a shock. Even l’enfant terrible Augusten Burroughs, who ushered in the memoir craze of the past decade with his candid memoir of his bizarre childhood, had the courtesy to hold off publication until he was in his 30s. But, I say, screw those literary naysayers. The bigger shock for them will be that, despite his youth, Archuleta (with the help of journalist/ethnomusicologist Monica Haim) managed to come up with a personal account that is engaging, readable and even inspiring.
Archuleta is not the fame-hungry, celebrity-obsessed Hollywood child star one might expect. He comes across as a sensitive, introspective and bright young man.

I get daily inspiration quotes from a friend here at The Voice. Today’s is very appropriate so I will repeat it here for all to read.
“The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name & the inheritance of a great example. The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children. The brave die never, though they sleep in dust: Their courage nerves a thousand living men. Today we come, not to mourn our dead soldiers, but to praise them. For love of country & it’s people they accepted death, which is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.” ~~Unknown

Djafan, I am struck by the last line of that very good review. Who would ever expect that David would be a “fame-hungry,celebrity-obsessed Hollywood child star”? I certainly hope that these “Martians” get to read the book.
We also learned a new word in this review. I’ve missed my calling in life. I should have been an “ethnomusicologist”.
The literary world is an elitist, snobby bunch. We may have to endure some unctuous reviewers that cannot bear the fact that a 19 year old had the presumptuousness to write a memoir. David will handle this issue with his characteristic charm and self-effacing wit, causing countless non- believers to fall hopelessly in love with him.
Trying to resist David’s charm and warmth is like trying to defend yourself against a charging lion, with a fly-swatter.

That is not the end of the review. She cut the review off from the spoiler content. Pabuckie posted a link to it, then asked for it to be removed for spoiler content. Then djafans posted a partial review. The reviewer was not talking about David but rather that David was NOT like that at all. He was simply amazed that David is so down to earth and real. FYI The last line in the review is that he has become a fan after reading David’s book. I hope this was clear 🙂
Here is the end of the review(no spoiler)
” His book is the work of a sweetly insecure, though very talented, young man. And, in the end, it is his fans—not snooty grad students—who will be the ultimate judge.
Count me as one who has become a fan. ”
haha what are the odds of finding this picture?

Celebs Tweet Memorial Day Support For Fallen U.S. Soldiers
This Memorial Day, celebrities weren’t just grilling hamburgers and jet setting around the world.
Several stars took the opportunity this holiday to remember why so many take the day off from work today – to commemorate U.S. soldiers who died in the course of duty.
And “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta wrote one of the day’s most profound Tweets: “On this memorial day it’s so important to remember all of the brave men and women who gave their lives because they believed in life, liberty, and all the amazing freedoms we all have in this great country that we live in today. I hope we can all pause a bit. From our activities to remember them and give thanks to each soldier who has fought, and to those who are out there today… As well as their families who’ve sacrificed so much for each of us. But thank you so much Angelica and all for this lovely and heartfelt tribute for Memorial Day. The videos, the comments… just thank you all. There is something so close and personal about this day. It is hard to describe and touch, yet it is universally real.
The young men and women, the resolute demeanor, the tenderness and sacrifice, the humanity all draw us together and “we cannot hallow” this day, they have already done that. We can only remember. And do our best to make their efforts count.
I struggle to achieve or accomplish, but am humbled instead. With us or with God, may God grant them peace.
