Many months ago as I was leaving one of David’s concerts, the following lyrics kept running through my mind…
That is why all the girls in town,
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
I arrived back at our hotel and looked up the words ‘Close to You’ on YouTube, a classic song by The Carpenters. I listened to the song a few times and it came to my mind that we feel as David’s fans, to be relatively close to him and that emotion must have triggered the song from my memory. 
Often in the early months of David’s fandom, we questioned how did we as fans, get where we are, following the career of one fabulous David Archuleta and how did we come to develop special friendships with other fans from around the world? It is because of the evolution in the relationship between the music industry and the fans that we see fans worldwide coming closer together in their online fandom. It is becoming more obvious that music fans and musicians belong to each other and that relationship happens more easily because of the empowerment of the intermediary, the internet. Fans want to feel that they are being brought closer to the music and the musicians that they admire.

Musicians like David, can see reviews on sites, read blogs, talk to fans on twitter and learn how everyone enjoyed their show soon after they get back to their hotel, which can be valuable information leading into the next night’s performance. There is an increased sense of closeness to the fans that never existed before. It is interesting to think how the potential of the internet to create relative closeness between fans and artists affects the artists not just financially but emotionally. The internet gives names, faces, personalities and a sense of individualized realness to their audience. This can be very powerful to the artist who has in the past been used to fans being mainly in groups held back and at a distance.
Fans of artists are recorded in history dating as far back as the 1200’s. Around 1850, Charles Dickens, one of the most popular novelists of all time, had a large number of fans in America. The fans of Charles Dickens novels were noted to have often gathered at the docks waiting for newspapers that carried his latest novel chapters. There was no medium for fans to discuss the artist.

Fan bases today are being built worldwide in never before locations due to the ability to transcend distances through the internet. David’s fan communities have enriched our lives. We learn about David’s fans in countries we sometimes know little about until the morning when we awake after a concert and scramble to our computers to savor every minute detail. We bring information provided to us by fans from web sites afar, and quickly write stories with transferred pictures and videos, for everyone to linger over.
New fan communities are building more rapidly and successfully than ever before. The positive consequences reach from the fan to everyone involved in the making and distribution of the albums and the planning of tours worldwide. There is a new music scene on the horizon that is changing the long-standing balance of power between the fans and the people of the music industry.
David has created an undeniably respectful and caring closeness with his fans that reach young and old everywhere.

What a great article! I love the pic on top — that says it all to me the way that girl is looking at David! I have never been a fan of any artist in this way before. What I mean is the need to look up every “nook & cranny” of info. on David. He is just such a special person that I think his “fans” feel the need to defend and protect him because he is worth it and his character is just beyond goodness. (I can never put into words what I am thinking like you guys do!) Everyone wants to be “Close to Him” (love the song!) because I think he just brings out the best in everyone and inspires people to do good things! Loved the video too! David sure does have a very strong fanbase and I only see it getting stronger & stronger.

Really weird, I wake up and read your article this morning because I was just thinking about this last night. It seems the tweets have slowed down a bit and how much I miss the breakfast tweets and the exercising tweets and the heading off to here tweets and the hush-cat tweets and weird guy in the room next door tweets and the beach tweets and the ortho tweets and the done for the day tweets….
And that being said, I don’t even want him to tweet more cause I only want him to tweet if he wants to and feel no obligation whatsoever to do so and how can anyone ask more from him because that is so completely selfish and he does not have to report to his fans 24/7, okay, 24/6, and well, just sayin…. miss them tweets.

This is such a great article for our time and especially as we near the end of this drought. So much will be happening on the internet about David and the fans at book signings, appearances to promote the single and album. Then the tour/tours here and abroad.

I know David is very active on twitter but I wonder if he ever logs on after a show to check out fan site spazzing. It does seem like an invaluble tool but I don’t know. If I were him, I would be tempted if only in a practical way of analyzing what went right or wrong. Of course, we never find anything wrong except in his clothing, and he never pays any attention to us on that.
I think there is a special bond between David and his fans that isn’t often there with other artists and fans. It has everything to do with who he is as a person…so kind, selfless, and loving. So devoid of any trace of arrogance or pretence. He doesn’t try to be anything other than who he is and he totally accepts his fans for who they are. He meets us as equals.

great post sb! i enjoy listening to the carpenters and this song has always reminded me of david too. also, one of my fav images of the carpenters includes karen playing the drums during “close to you” while richard is on the piano.

SB, wonderful article. “Close To You” was the Carpenters first of many great songs. Like David, they were not considered “cool” by those “in the know” back in the ’70s, but, also like David, they had a solid fan base who supported them, bought their singles and albums (remember those things), and made them one of the most successful groups of the pop era.
This will happen for David too. David rememds me a great deal of the great Karen Carpenter. She was a joy to listen to, and had a golden voice that made everything she sang a delight. Sound familiar? She was also loved and respected by her peers in the business, another David similarity.
I would love to hear David’s versions of “We’ve Only Just Begun” or “For All We Know”. Only he could do them justice.
The picture of that girl looking at David with a mixture of adoration and wonderment is a classic. David is the embodiment of every young (and, ahem, not so young) girl’s “dream guy”. As far as I am concerned, anyone, of any age, who is so inclined is guilty of only one thing… possessing impeccable taste.

I ran into the girl in that picture exiting the House of Blues concert last March in Chicago. She was there with her mom and laughed when I asked her if she WAS in fact “that girl”. I think MANY people had asked before me! But it was definitely a hoot to see her as I do adore that picture of ‘pure adoration’. 🙂

SB….great article…love the picture of the girl. Sometimes I think I look just like her as I look at his videos and the many wonderful photos out there…. I’m just a lot older, have a lot more wrinkles and my hair is showing streaks of gray.
I love the song “Close to You” and feel it is so true as to the way Davids fans feel…We just want to be close to him!

If ever an expression said “What a guy” it is the one on that girl’s face. What I really like about it is that she is having a private moment. David is not looking or interacting with her, and he is otherwise occupied. It’s as if she is thinking “Wow, it’s really him, and he’s everything I hoped he’d be”. One thing about David is that he never disappoints, no matter how high the expectations.

This is so true and not apparent to the casual fan, but it’s only a matter of time before this changes. David is evolving into a serious singer/songwriter and now author. I listened the Idolsnow interview, if you haven’t you should, it’s worth the cost to get it on your ipod or iphone. David being asked questions and allowed to answer them about the book and songwriting in such depth, he continues to amaze me.

I marvel at his grace under pressure, and his high spiritedness in the face of all that he has to endure as a “new” celebrity. His next book should be a “how to” be yourself and retain your dignity in this wacky world we live in.

I came across this old video of a song David co-wrote around the time of ZG? I had forgotten how moving the lyrics are. NO idea who the lady singer is. I can see this song fitting so well with his inspirational book.

Richard Carpenter once wrote to their fans along with a ‘Thank you’, “Your notes and comments are read, and listened to, and taken to heart, and your great ideas are added to “the drawing board”.
So in some artists circles, fans are listened to and read. I can well imagine that David himself is a great listener!

SandyBeaches! What a wonderful article and the photos & video are perfect! I’m just floored at the writers here. So creative and so in tune to David, not to mention interesting & educational. Every article teaches me something I never knew or thought about before. Thank you SB! 😀
“Close To You” really says it all! We all want to be close to HIM. Even though the majority of us become tongue-tied, star-struck, completely hypnotized and mesmerized in HIS presence. We practice & rehearse what we want to say to him, then when HE is there in front of us, all the words just elude us! That’s what happens to ME anyway..almost EVERY dang time I have been fortunate to be in his presence.
We are very lucky to be living in this day & age which allows us to at least “feel” close to HIM as much as we want at the click of a mouse. How sad if we had fallen under HIS spell during AI or at any of his concerts and there were NO Internet! What a nightmare just thinking about that!
We have so many fans sites we can go to, all offering different perspective & themes. Before the Internet, if you were a fan of an artist, you had to “join” a fan club, pay “dues” to get a photo & maybe a newsletter if you wanted to know what your idol was up to. And isn’t it grand that David really loves Twitter? He said he’s addicted! And what a gem he is to WANT to keep us informed as much as he feels he can. I am so grateful to him for letting us see glimpses of what he does when he’s working as well as when he’s not. We are indeed fortunate. He never gives us too much info, but just enough to keep us wanting more. He is one of the most interesting men in the world today…yes he is, at 19 years old..but he’ll never believe it. 🙂
Anyway, SB, I love your article. Karen Carpenter had a very lovely voice with a very soothing quality. Her vocals sounded effortless & sublime. I really enjoyed listening to her.

Great article SB. Close to you is the perfect title.
It’s why so many people travel the country to be in his presence for a short time. Am forever grateful to know that I’m not alone. As I found out at my very first David concert, which happened to be a solo one. And I met so many people who had traveled across country to be there. He draws people to him.
p.s. I went back to my old store today to pick up a few things, and no less than 4 people asked how David was. :)They all said they saw him sing Imagine on idol a few weeks ago, and that it was beautiful.

Thank you to everyone who has read the article and commented. I learn so much more from the comments added especially because some of you know your music history so well. Many of you have obviously been in tune with the artists for a long time.
#13 Bliss, thank you for showing the similarities between David and The Carpenters as I had not thought about that at all. I love to listen to the song and look at the lead picture as there is so much emotion expressed in the eyes and the smiles.
The video ‘My Hands’ captured my attention because it includes his family and friends along with his fans. Nearly every beat produces a new picture which fascinated me because there are close to 350 pictures. For the first time I looked up the lyrics for ‘My Hands’ and read them as I had only guessed at some of the words before. I have a whole new respect for the song as the lyrics are awesome…

I’ve been noticing the slowdown on tweets too! I’m actually happy about it because it tells me that he has more important things to do than tweet. Or maybe he just needs some space. Whatever the case, I agree with you Emmegirl, would never want David to feel any twitter pressure from us.

“Crush” earns BMI Pop Songwriting award for David Hodges!
“Crush” just keeps on delivering. Early this morning, Eman, Claude Kelly, LadyV and Lisa Murray were tweeting away about “Crush” earning a BMI songwriting award [BMI is a major songwriting organization (along with ASCAP) for David Hodges – what an honor for him, and David… this song has struck a chord in the pop music industry, and was a great introduction for David in it.

Serendipity…. Daughter and grandson (4 months old) and I were out last night at a retirement party, GB was rather fussy and did not want to nurse etc… daughter was beginning to stress as well, trying to do the discreet nursing thing! My phone rings> guess which text came through?? From MR Thoughtful Perfection?? When I showed my daughter (disceetly lol,) she smiled calmed gb down and everything went well after that. On the way home I explained that quite often David’s text are very helpful to me in my day to day…She commented that it was “strange but wonderful”!

I love your serendipity story and the ‘strange but wonderful’ part is something that we have to endure from family, but we are familiar with it now.

Enjoying this article. Reminds me of the ultimate up close and personal. The Meet & Greets! Those of us who are fortunate to attend… can then spread the good Archu-news and share with others on-line.
Two years ago in July after first meeting David at the barricades during an AI Tour show, (when I could barely say more than a “Thank you” for your music), I never imagined I would have all these future opportunities to see and speak to him again, to hand him gifts and letters… and more importantly to join in with others who are so proud and happy to be David fans!
From our hearts to his! I am thankful every day that David has let us into his world!

I used to calm my grandson(who at the time had the nickname of Letta Boy because he said Letta instead of Archuleta) by taking him for a ride in the car and playing Letta’s music! He would calm right down and want more Letta!
Angelica has probably heard this story about “Letta Boy” but thought I would share with you all.
My daughter and my grandson were with a friend at Arbys one afternoon. Arbys had background music playing. They had begun to eat their food when my grandson began saying Letta..which was what he always said when he would hear Davids music. My daughter explained to her friend that Letta Boy thinks all guy singers are David Archuleta. The friend laughed and said…Hey that is David Archuleta singing Crush. My daughter was impressed but a little embarassed. By the way my grandson is almost 3 now and no longer says Letta…he can say David Archuleta without missing a beat!

Poof #69, thanks so much. So much of what passes for love in this world is of the “I’ll love you as long as you please me and don’t challenge me in any way” variety. We all know that feeling of “that person says they love me, so why don’t I feel it.” That’s what conditional love is, and it isn’t really love.
My love for David is, literally, unconditional. He doesn’t have to live up to any preconceived standard of excellence or behavior. I loved him when he sang “Imagine” and I loved him in the exact same way when he took a hatchet to “We Can Work It Out”. I loved him when he went to a retirement home in Idaho to sing for the residents last December, and I loved him when he wandered into that silly bar in NYC last month. It’s all the same because it’s all David.
The Beatles wrote “The love you take is equal to the love you make”. David is the easiest person to love I have ever encountered. He’s a real person, and not afraid of his own humanity. Look again at the picture of that girl’s expression in this article. Who else but David gets looked at like that?

Congrats to Dave Hodges on winning the BMI award for Crush!
Was wondering why Eman and Claude Kelly didn’t receive it too since they wrote Crush w/ Dave Hodges but of the three writers, Dave Hodges is the only one who is a member of BMI.
A little BMI: “Broadcast Music, Inc. collects license fees from businesses that use music, which it distributes as royalties to songwriters, composers & music publishers. ” (from the BMI website)
The talented Mr. Hodges also co-wrote “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal” by Evanescence. (Love those songs!)

We’re so excited about David Archuleta’s new single and new album of songs and extremely impatient waiting to hear them. How much longer? Two more weeks, or two weeks less to wait, could we get something, the tract list, picture of the cover maybe.
I wake up in the middle of the night and smile, skipping around the office during the day and sometimes humming as the excitement begins to swell with anticipation. That fateful Tuesday when his album will be released and the world hears his inner most thoughts in song and the certain series of events his fanatic fans will take part in to finding every last detail about the new tracks.
The true test of David’s new album is the inescapable leaked music. Will it be out there, will we all exercise self control and not download those precious tunes?
Some of the magic is lost if we download. I’m going to take part in the delight of ripping that annoying plastic from the CD case, then digging my nails into that sticker seal stuck to each case. It may not seem apparent but they really do want us to get it open.
Of course there will be some of you that just download from iTunes or Amazon.com. But the true music consumer wants that hard copy so they can physically hold on to something solid just in case your ipod explodes or your computer comes down with that unexpected virus.
We won’t even get the car door closed before we have it inserted into the player and counting the mega-seconds before the #1 track appears on the screen. But wait, I am ahead of myself, we first need the single so we can all discuss how great it is and can’t wait for the entire CD.
Please Mr. Jive Label put us out of our misery!

Totally off topic (kind of relates to bliss’ comment above)–after watching Miley Cyrus on DWTS last night (my cousin’s wife danced with the UVU dance team), and Justin Bieber on AI tonite (for some reason I’ve become interested in the outcome of AI9), I am sooooo ready for The Voice to release some music I can’t stand it. I just can’t believe the “music” that is out there. Enough of this.

The adult son of one of my best friends died unexpectedly a few days ago. I am just having a bit of trouble connecting. I feel the total goodness of life and am grateful. It is just difficult to think of being in a crowd. Even a very happy and loving crowd.

I have a signed book on order, but who knows when that will get to eastern Canada? So I have been reading all about Barnes & Noble of course and realizing that in just a few days there will be talk all over tht place about this quote and that aswesome picture taken by what’s her name? Then there will be revelations of different sorts and possibly incomplete tales trying not to tell all for the sake of others who are envious to the point of searching all over the net for anything at all…

What’s interesting to me is that I follow Eman, Hodges, Claude and other writers David has collaborated with and I don’t see any tweeting of any other artists or their fans for that matter. This is a very unique situation for one unique young man.

Event Guidelines:
1. You must have a Mall of America® issued wristband to enter the autograph line.
2. A limited number of wristbands will be distributed in Sears Court starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 5. To receive a wristband, you must have a copy of David Archuleta’s book “Chords of Strength”.
3. Each person in your party must be present to receive a wristband. Wristbands are non-transferable. No exceptions.
4. When you enter the autograph line, please remain in single file.
5. You must stay in line to keep your place. You may leave the line to use the restroom or get food for a short period of time. One person in your party must stay in line at all times.
6. If you choose to leave for an extended period of time, you must go to the end of the line when you return.
7. People wearing wristbands that have been tampered or altered will not be allowed through the autograph line. No exceptions.
8. No personalizations will be allowed.
9. No photographs will be allowed.

Been really busy with “real life” the last couple of days again. I can see there has been much excitement & anticipation for THE BOOK. And some fans here in America have already received theirs! I’m really so happy there hasn’t been any more pages of THE BOOK leaked on the net. David’s fans are so respectful of him. 🙂
BTW, David singing ONE NOTE on that bubble tweet…well how do you describe that little piece of heaven? I don’t know whether to thank you or smack you Abrra, for the MGR because it’s just making it even more difficult, for me anyway to continue to be ever so patient for David’s “Portrait In Music”. 😉

I would like to make a humble plea to all the lucky folks that will be receiving their book before the rest of us poor slobs who have to wait until at least June 1. Please refrain from sharing any line, passage, or punctuation mark before the huddled masses get their copy. I feel the same way about snippets from songs, but this is much worse. The book is a private conversation David is having with each individual reader, and to take his thoughts out of context is not, IMHO, a good thing.
I realize that there might be some people who are chomping at the bit to get a preview, but I , for one, would prefer to wait.

Bliss, not only will some receive their books on June 1st but many will be receiving their books at the scheduled book signings up until June 17 th. People perhaps can wait an appropriate time to allow most fans to have received their books not only from the book signings but also from Amazon.
Actually, the books are out in the public around the world enough now that there could be partial reprints of chapters or paragraphs, but I believe that people have the idea to let Santa bring their present and not spoil it for anyone.
I don’t believe that any of us want to hear about the contents early and we will surely do the same for everyone else…at least it looks that way now. Book talk has been nil (as far as I have noticed) since the two pages were printed…
