An Attitude of Gratitude
Posted by emifriend on Tuesday, April 27, 2010
I don’t think I have ever heard an interview with David Archuleta that I was not able to glean some wisdom about the art of living. David is so young, yet he gets so much of it so right. One of his best attributes, and one of the things about David that I think is key to understanding him, is his sense of gratitude. But I did not fully appreciate the impact of gratitude until I read a blog by John Fischer* about the POWER of gratitude.
“It’s hard to think of one vice that the virtue of thankfulness cannot render useless. One does not need to steal when one is thankful. A man does not covet his neighbor’s wife when he is thankful for his own. No one craves more when he is grateful for what he has. In the same way, a thankful heart cancels out pride and arrogance. No need to judge other people when you are thankful for who you are. No need to measure yourself by and compare yourself to others when you are thankful for what God has done in your life.”
Humility not arrogance, inclusiveness not judgments, hope and thankfulness instead of a shred of bitterness… It all reminds me of David’s steadfast and sincere refusal to take a second place win on American Idol as anything less than the best thing that ever happened to him. David lives his life grateful for every blessing that comes his way. And for David, it’s all blessings. So I am grateful to David for putting his words and actions to this theory of gratitude. He might not ever know that I love seeing this beautiful truth at work in him almost as much as I love hearing him sing.
Some other quotes about gratitude:
Buddha:
Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.
Cicero:Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.
G. K. Chesterton:You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.

Abrra hi. I haven’t posted in some time. Just had to tell you what a wonderful post you’ve written. Yes, I know David’s gratitude and sheer goodness have motivated me to be a kinder more accepting and thankful person. His love of family really touches me. For a 19 year old guy he’s the exception to the rule. I’m happy to be alive now and able to watch him mature into a beautiful, insanely handsome young man with a heart of gold.
Still hoping we will meet one day at a concert!

Lovely article, Emifriend. The translation of my screen name is “extreme thankfulness” which I chose to remind me of David and the attitude I should have in all things. He appears to live this attitude better than anyone I have ever encountered. I love learning from young people!
Have a good day everyone!

HI! I don’t post here very often, but I am here nearly every day reading articles and posts. I just have to say that I love this article. I think gratitude is one of the foundational characteristics of David. It motivates him to good works. He has been a doer of good works all of his life. He doesn’t reach out and help others so everyone can see. He does it privately and with love. His quiet strength and example are before us. He motivates me to be better. I don’t know if I will ever have the great opportunity to meet him and say thank you. I can tweet “thank you”, but I don’t know if he will ever see it or ever really understand what I mean. But someday……I just hope someday he will know what a difference he has made in my little life and in the lives of many. I appreciate his courage and integrity in the midst of the storms of life. He is an anchor.

I think you’ve discovered the source of his power. Gratitude keeps him positively grounded and propells him forward. Thinking about it this morning as I type, I think that pride must be the exact opposite of gratitude. No wonder he doesn’t get a big head; he doesn’t run on that high octane fuel but on the warmth of a thankful heart. I have such tremendous respect for him. He is what Rudyard Kipling would call a “man.”

Let’s see now – time for me to show some gratitude:
– To angelica, djafan, bebereader, abrra and emifriend for this site — the layout and information are exceptional;
– To all the online friends I have come to know, be it mostly in cyberspace;
– To all the posters and writers for the thought-provoking and insightful articles and comments;
– For the chat site – so nice to be able to visit, share our thoughts and, yes, have tons of fun;
– To David – for everything!
– To God for giving me whatever years I have left to follow David’s journey.

Thanks! Emifriend is not really an admin but at times you will see the author of an article listed there when their work is published. I remove it after they get credit for the article but wordpress has a delay in picking that up. Just be aware that if you see someone under admins that is not me, bebe, abrra, or dj, an article from them is either up on the site or imminent.

Emifriend…Love the article. I too learn some type of wisdom from David in just about everything he talks about. The way he is able to answer questions so wisely is amazing.
When my kids were young we had cassette tapes about Honesty, Gratitude, Joy and several of the other great attributes of life. I remember the song from the Graditude Attitude cassette…I think it will be stuck in my head all day now…but that is good. My kids loved these cassettes. My 32 year old son even asked me if I still had these cassettes because he was telling his wife about how much fun they were when he was a kid. I will have to go look them up and see if I still know how to work a cassette player. LOL!

Emifriend, in light of the recent histrionics surrounding David, your article is not only poignant, it is timely. Being a fan of David is really a matter of his heart. Sure, he’s handsome, he’s funny, he’s charming. But, it’s his heart, so pure and and grounded in love and appreciation, that is his true gift to us. And it is, literally, the gift that keeps on giving.
If I may be allowed to repeat something I wrote a while back:
David’s singing is his heart, set to music.

Thank you everybody, for the positive comments! It really gives me an adrenaline rush to see all the comments. There’s something so affirming about the whole process of saying “this is what I see” and having people say ” yes, I see it too and did you see this? and wow look at that! ”
Thank you admins for the opportunity to experience that here. I’ve been smiling all day at the beautiful comments! And then came those beautiful pictures. I don’t even have words for how stunning the pictures are.
David truly walks as one who knows that he will “always be blessed with love.” It seems that his gratitude, his response to that knowledge, is the foundation for each of his steps. His security and confidence are so strong he can tolerate the vulnerability of showing and sharing his loving heart with every person he meets.
Rich Mullins wrote a song for his best friend’s baby boy called “Let Mercy Lead” and the lyric reminds me of David:
Let mercy lead
Let love be the strength in your legs
And in every footprint that you leave
There’ll be a drop of grace
If we can reach
Beyond the wisdom of this age
Into the foolishness of God
That foolishness will save
Let mercy lead
David’s gratitude enables him to walk in mercy and grace, goodness and love. And it’s all so real that I know these things and have never even met him!
I think part of the reason I keep showing up is to see what will happen next… how will David respond.. what more can I learn… how will my heart grow? And I just love it that you are all here with me.
Thank you!

Thanks for this article. David seems to embody the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Love This:
I don’t think I have ever heard an interview with David Archuleta that I was not able to glean some wisdom about the art of living. David is so young, yet he gets so much of it so right.
~ YES. Poignantly put. I’m constantly in awe and inspired by this. Whether I’m reading his blogs, tweets or watching interviews or performances, I’m often saying outloud to myself….”Where did you come from?!!”
And I’ve never expected or wanted the “superhuman” or perfection of David (though he does keep delivering) On the contrary…all that “stuff of which we make SUPERSTARS” is far less captivating to what David brings as..he puts it…”just David.” It’s David’s humanity, authenticity, realness I adore and respect.
and this:
David lives his life grateful for every blessing that comes his way. And for David, it’s all blessings. So I am grateful to David for putting his words and actions to this theory of gratitude. He might not ever know that I love seeing this beautiful truth at work in him almost as much as I love hearing him sing.
Absolutely. It was the Voice that first pulled me in for life, with a few notes on AI7. The rest of the total package has been the unexpected gift. Though.. even the first time I saw him during the audition, I recall saying to myself…besides being “a singer’s singer”, the real deal…”there’s something else about his demeanor…hmm”…boy was there…ever.
and Bliss…“David’s singing is his heart, set to music.” love that.
…I love the vibe here.

I was sitting in chat and In This Moment came on. So after that finished, I had to go watch it 3 more times on youtube. Found an interesting comment. (people are still finding David, which I love)
” I only watched idol season 8 so basically I don’t know Archi has such an amazing voice. I don’t know who should have won but I do know that he is much more visible than Cook now. Considering about the age, I think he would win in the long run”
This song needs to be celebrated again. The moment at 1:43-47 is the most beautiful sound I have ever heard.

I love the beautiful words and then the retelling of all the beautiful words and the (rehearing and the reseeing of David’s beautiful music and images) It’s almost like if we can just think about it, say it, realize it enough, can it all be ours too? And I look at the bottom of the page and read ” I am not a robot and I don’t have wooden heart” and I am thankful all over again, because the answer is YES–This is for all of us too- it is within our reach!
We watch a “reality tv show” and finally get a good dose of “real” with David Archuleta, and it is so refreshing and brings such good hope. I never saw it coming but I am so glad it is here now.
I once overheard my funny Arizona cousin trying to convince his visiting fiance that in the South, it is a requirement for everybody in a household to “put on their jammies and kiss everybody goodnight” before retiring for the evening. I swear, if i could do that here, I would!
I hope you all have sweet dreams and wake up with the joy of the morning and hearts full of thanks!

emifriend…I thoroughly enjoyed your article…’An attitude of gratitude”.
This is the light that most of us would like to live under in regards to David for all that he is and all that we appreciate.
If we (meaning the fan population) ever get back our fan logic and respect and appreciation for our artist then I will enjoy fandom once again. To me, this is why your article is important and of course others like it. It is so easy for other sites to do diservice to David while expressing their verbal powers, but it is all for the ‘self’ and not for the love of David.
So cheers to the writers who keep writing articles we are proud enough for the people of the world to read, because they do read them and what we write is a huge reflection upon our ourselves and who we are.
