Burning Your Bridges

Posted by bebereader on Wednesday, March 3, 2010

“Don’t burn your bridges” is a warning you hear when you leave a job because you never know when the contacts you made will come in handy.  The original expression is actually, “burning your bridges” and it comes from the actions of the Spanish explorer, Cortez when he conquered Mexico in 1519.  To be sure there was no chance that his army would back down in war with the powerful Aztecs, he burned down his own ships.  Cortez’ army had to fight because he took away any excuse for retreat.  Translating this into everyday life, burning the mental bridge behind what you want to accomplish eliminates any excuse for not reaching a goal.

What does this have to do with David Archuleta?  Well, we’ve seen evidence that David puts himself into positions where he is forced to grow and change.  He wanted to audition for American Idol but was torn about having to give up his summer job at the park amphitheater in Murray.  Ultimately he decided to follow his dream and quit his job in favor of the audition.  He is now a successful recording artist and the world as we know it has been changed forever.  David said he was never good at public speaking and that he was glad he had music in his life because that was the only way he communicated.  When given the opportunity to speak at The Women’s Conference in Utah, he had the courage to break through his fears and accept the invitation despite the risk of failing.  He said that accepting the invitation would be a good way to overcome his fear of speaking in public.  He succeeded in giving a fifty minute speech.  David understands that challenges are not barriers but opportunities for growth.  He spoke about this in his speech:

“… sometimes even if it is a hard path to take, even if it has those big hills and climbs and all those scary trees and you can get scratches, and you can get hurt sometimes. But I think that’s what makes us grow. That’s what makes us learn in our lives. So when we get to that end of the path we have all those bruises and cuts and you can see that we had a difficult time getting to where we were; but at the same time, you can say, you know what, this is proof that I went and I took that path, and this is proof that I did all I could and that I was willing to take that path even if it wasn’t the easiest path to take.”

David accepts challenges with grace.  Doubtful that he’d be able to write songs for his second album, he mentioned in an interview that he had writer’s block 24/7.  But he rose to the challenge and is now writing with established songwriters in the field, determined to take a major role in writing all the songs for his sophomore album, to make the songs his own.

The courage David has shown in taking on new challenges, together with his ability to be insightful at such a young age is an inspiration to me.  Never did I envision myself writing for an online fan site.  I felt safer editing someone else’s work; my experience is in editing. When invited to come onboard The Voice, I was excited yet fearful that my writing wouldn’t measure up.  Then I thought of David, his summer job and his American Idol audition.  I thought of how he doesn’t shy away from challenges and how he welcomes new experiences in his life.  His strength made me jump in and burn my bridge behind me, the bridge that was stopping me from moving forward.  No more excuses. Unexpectedly, something amazing happened.  I found that I really enjoy writing plus it’s given me an outlet for this severe case of ODD.

Most people feel fear but successful people like David don’t let it stop them because to them it pales by comparison to the fear of not knowing what they could have been.  In his book, Chords of Strength, David admits how insecure he was about his voice due to having suffered vocal chord paralysis.  But he didn’t let his fears stand in the way of his dream of becoming a singer because “he loved the way singing made him feel more than he disliked the way he sounded.”  How different would David’s life be today had he chosen a different path? What if he let his doubts hold him back from auditioning for American Idol?  I don’t even want to entertain the thought of how different our lives would be without him.

It’s a slow learning process and it’s not easy but I try hard to take a cue from David who, by example, has taught me not to let fear stand in the way of accepting challenges and accomplishing my goals.  When in doubt I find myself tapping into his strength and it seems to empower me to push ahead.  If I burn the bridge behind me, the only way I can go is forward.

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.”

Aw, great article Bebereader. I, too, have learned sooo much from David — look at ME! Making videos…never in a gazillion years did I think I could do that…NOPE…I’m fearful of computers but it’s all because of David that I just had to TRY and HE gave me that inspiration! Your article is beautiful and the more we do it I guess the less scary it becomes! (Hope this posts!)

Bebe, you said…”I don’t even want to entertain the thought of how different our lives would be without him”. That is a scary thought but one that has floated across my mind on occassion. Without David and his music we would not have met each other and we come from most all regions of North America. Now we share our immense passion for his music and at the same time we are enlarging our knowledge of the music of so many other great musicians. We have been reintroduced to fantastic singers since watching the video tribute ‘Somos El Mundo’. Our lives have been deeply enriched because of our introduction to David. Without David’s music…let me see…can’t imagine it!

    Cheers to Bebe, 😉

Bebe, Well done — well-written and well-researched! You COULD be David’s ghost writer. 🙂

Betsy, I always wondered too what my life would be like now if I hadn’t watched some TV show two years ago. It is such an unexpected journey. It defies everything I knew about myself. Who could have scripted it? We write, create art, deftly use the latest technology, overcome our fear of travelling, learn to appreciate other people’s faith, share our innermost thoughts with complete strangers, and above all, we look into our heart and learn from a baby-faced young man. All these things and more that we didn’t know we are capable of. What a crazy and marvelous journey. Thank you David Archuleta!

Bebebebe… I love this article. I need it and I will re read it! I bet David had no idea when he auditioned for Idol he would only spend 16 days of his Sr year at home. He certainly had to loose sight of the shore! I think David has taken it all “step by step,” and it has been amazing to watch him grow before our very eyes. And my has he grown.

I love that David has not forgotten who he is, (present tense of the verb TO BE) in all of this. David’s talent has opened many doors for him and his kindness has opened many hearts. A lot in David has grown and changed, but the core things (his humility, kindness, love, gratitude and faith) I think he will never choose to loose, and they seem unchangable.

It is exicting and amazing to me that so much of what David represents and does,is available to each one of us, in our own day to day lives, as evidenced in the above posts. One of the best things David has modeled for me is his kindness and patience with himself thru the growth process and his acceptance of scrathes and bruises, not as overbearing, painful obstacles ( how I tend to view things) but as temporary reminders of good things.

David gives himself room to grow and has opened spaces for us to grow as well. I’m not sure even Elvis did that! I stand in awe and in anticipation of all that is to come. And I love making this trip with all ya’ll.

Bebe, I loved your article. I re-read it three times because there is a lot of depth and truth in it. Thank you.
I had watched David on idol and liked him but had held back from crossing the bridge to actually calling myself a fan because I thought perhaps I was prejudiced because he was from my home state and religion. Then David sang “Imagine!” I was blindsided. I got the chills and I barely breathed for most of that performance. I didn’t cry, but was surprised to realize that there were tears in my eyes when he finished.
David Archuleta gave us a glimpse into his soul with that performance. There was passion and sweetness, strength and vulnerability, and such a heartbreakingly beautiful belief in what he was singing. When he sang “a broootherhood of men” I was a goner. I loved him and I loved his spirit which touched my heart so deeply that night. Oh, and that voice!!!
I crossed a bridge on that night and it went up in flames and I never want to go back.
As YJfanofDavid said, this is a “crazy and marvelous journey,” and there are new horizons because this young man came into our lives.
Brooke White called him “pure as gold” yesterday and somehow, even in that early performance, that shone through. What we didn’t yet know about him with our minds, we felt with our hearts.

YJfanofdavid #9 Love this song “She’s not chu”. Have tried to get this tune out of my head but I tell you his voice on this just gets to me. It might be a reject from Album #1 but it still has legs for me.

The lyrics are catchy, not deep or thought-provoking, there’s just David’s voice. The background and acoustics don’t get in the way of THE VOICE so maybe that’s why I keep listening to it. Others are commenting how David uniquely pronounces the words sometimes, on purpose no doubt. The sound of the word as he draws it out that extra millisecond in that way that only David does, for me, is heaven.

I am really struggling here to explain myself.

Just going to listen to it one more time.

Ahhh Thanks you guys for your kind and insightful comments. This was a soul-searching article for me but it had to be written. David Archuleta will never know how far the scope of his greatness reaches. He just wanted to sing, yet has profoundly changed the lives of so many people, including me. There’s really no way to properly thank him. We shower him with gifts; we tweet him; we write fan letters; we buy concert tickets and cds; we stand in line for hours to get into his shows but aside from giving to his charities, I feel that the best way to thank him is to put it in writing and have it out there for eternity, with the hope that maybe, just maybe David will sneak a peek here and give us a read.

Pabuckie#1: “Your article is beautiful and the more we do it I guess the less scary it becomes!”

In fact only 3 comments has been made when I saw it, but life got in the way the rest of the day. I have had this in my mind all day. I just love how you seem to capture all that has happened to me in the last two years. I have never been this enthralled with just one person’s music before, but he is all I want to listen to. I go to bed listening to him, and wake up searching for any new thing about him. I was at the Women’s Conference, and to listen to him there was probably one of the most amazing things for me, cause here was this 18 year old young man giving all of us women a lesson to learn. That we can overcome anything we want to, we just have to do it. It might be hard, it might be real tough, but we can do anything we want to in this life, if we just do it. How will we know if we can get over that fear, if we don’t try what we are fearful of?
You all here at “The Voice” have really touched me with your true insight into the soul of this young man. My life has been enriched not only by David coming into my life, but all of you too!!!!

You have made it perfectly clear what you ‘got” from his talk. Spot on! I listen to the mp3 of that speech once a week at least, and never HEARD (in the context of the speech) the meaning about burning a bridge to assure that you must go forward. Bebe, beautiful article! David is an inspiration, a wonder, but yet still an enigma. I used to be very confused about the affect David had on so many people, especially me. Then I just stopped thinking about it and started enjoying the ride. These last two years have been like a roller-coaster for me. So many good times. David makes me happy. 😀

    BTW, has everyone seen this?

Good night all, and for David..

    Dear lord,

    Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to ALWAYS DO RIGHT by David.
Help us support David so that it’s ALWAYS IN HIS BEST INTERESTS.
CLOAK DAVID IN YOUR PROTECTIVE ARMS always and please keep David and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen

David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always! TAKE CARE!

    Bebe,

Thanks for all the labor and love you put into this article. It examines an aspect of David, being a fan of David, that is worth a closer look. There is so much we love about him, but this ability of his to inspire by just being true to himself is something rare and beautiful to experience. I have watched him, “take that path even if it wasn’t the easiest path to take.” I started out as a fan of his music, but somewhere along the way, I started to walk my own challenging path with him. His tenacity to be genuinely who he is, whatever the consequences, has somehow given me permission to be more fully myself. What I have learned in the process has astounded me. I have learned that just being me is enough; it was always enough, but it took the courage of one young man to show me that truth.

I’ve been wanting to put this to words for a long time. I am so thankful to David for this gift… his tenacity.. the permissioin.. the affirmation.. and his self acceptance…There is so much freesom in “being enough.” I kept thinking maybe I’d learn that from being older ( and older and older and older .. ha) And I am most surprised that I learned it from a teen. I have told plenty of teens as much in the form of advice, but here we have one walking it out and inviting us in, and finally making believers out of us.

This article is not only beautifully written but so insightful and refreshing. Never thought about that phrase (burning bridges) in the positive sense but from the viewpoint of ‘the voice’, it can only be positive. Definitely makes one rethink what drives reaching goals.

“David understands that challenges are not barriers but opportunities for growth.”

One of the things that has helped me “to be the change you want to see”. Funny how one can spend their entire life caught up in wanting change and all of a sudden a wise young man (less than a third her age) comes into her life and bestows these words (and so many more) of wisdom. It truly amazes me how he can grasp it all… and then I remind myself, he is a gift. My life is so much richer not only because of his music but all that he is. I will continue to thank him every opportunity i get.

A little homework before the book comes out. I found this about Vocal Chord Paralysis. This person had the surgery, see parts 1 & 2. I wonder how David’s look and function now. His vocal endurance still amazes me and it looks like he is very lucky.

    Good Morning!

Reading all the comments gives me hope for the future. If David has been able to touch us and move us so deeply, this must just be the beginning of the David effect as he moves forward.

I read the comments on the Somos El Mundo youtube and the question asked most by those who don’t know David is “Who is the cutie with the green eyes at such and such time” “Who is that gorgeous guy with the white shirt and black vest” then stating he sounds good, he sings good, he must be famous if they gave him three parts. And those who know him quickly inform them that it’s David Archuleta. Makes me so very happy because the reaction to him singing in this version has been so positive. It’d be great if he released two singles, in english and espanol.

@davidarchie tweet – Reunited and it feels so good!

bebe, what great thoughts!! I, too, had never thought of burning bridges in a positive aspect. Can David ever realize how he daily feeds us with inspiration to make changes in our own lives simply by the way he lives his own? Does he comprehend how much we glean from his inspirational quotes that he tweets and speaks to us? Where was this person of wisdom when I was younger and in need of what he delivers? All I can say now is that I’m glad I am able to be a part of the phenomenom of David Archuleta at this stage of my life. It is never too late to make changes, I’ve found. Although my kids are grown and my marriage is well past the 3 decades mark, I am finding peace and joy in following the example of a 19 year old young man.

    Tawna

PS–FG that video on vocal paralysis was very informative. It explains a lot about David’s sound—makes it even more beautiful to me. Yes, he is a blessed young man with a purpose for being here.

So many thoughtful comments. I’m glad that my writing made everyone think. Thinking is good! These quotes bear repeating:

Angelica #30 “His tenacity to be genuinely who he is, whatever the consequences, has somehow given me permission to be more fully myself. What I have learned in the process has astounded me. I have learned that just being me is enough; it was always enough, but it took the courage of one young man to show me that truth.”

Bravo, Angelica! In the quest to solve the riddle that is David Archuleta, you took my concept one step further and I appreciate that. It helps understand why we are all are all under his spell.

Emi#32 “I am so thankful to David for this gift… his tenacity.. the permissioin.. the affirmation.. and his self acceptance…There is so much freedom in “being enough.” I kept thinking maybe I’d learn that from being older (and older and older and older .. ha) And I am most surprised that I learned it from a teen. I have told plenty of teens as much in the form of advice, but here we have one walking it out and inviting us in, and finally making believers out of us.”

And Bravo to you, too! Piece by piece we come closer and closer to solving the wonder that is David Archuleta….

fandaforeverti48 #33 “Funny how one can spend their entire life caught up in wanting change and all of a sudden a wise young man (less than a third her age) comes into her life and bestows these words (and so many more) of wisdom. It truly amazes me how he can grasp it all… and then I remind myself, he is a gift. My life is so much richer not only because of his music but all that he is.”

    Beautiful words!!

Tawna21 #40 “Where was this person of wisdom when I was younger and in need of what he delivers? All I can say now is that I’m glad I am able to be a part of the phenomenom of David Archuleta at this stage of my life. It is never too late to make changes, I’ve found.”

Thank you Tawna! We are living examples!

djafan#37: Bee-you-tee-full pic from of the AI7 group reunited again. David’s hair is looking good! Love the tousled slightly messy look.

bebereader, can’t agree more with all that has been said about your beautiful, inspirational writing. There really is nothing I can add to all the wonderful comments except to thank you for sharing that.

and this…”Last night I couldn’t get to sleep at all. Three songs were fighting for space in my head and none of them would quit. Your solos in Somos El Mundo were the loudest, followed by Crush at The Mint and of course She’s Not You”

That version of Crush I love, love… the Somos El Mundo – something about the way his voice sounds, and for me, especially in the short *excurciatingly short* final solo at 6:19… it is a crime that they didn’t let him keep singing!

… and #15 Ram’s thoughts on She’s Not You is exactly what I’ve been thinking…can’t stop listening to it… the lyrics might be typical, but there is nothing typical about the way he sings it, the pronunciations, the way he gives actual meaning to these simple words, the extension of not just vowels but consonants, (does that make sense),and that VOICE!

…it’s just too much, too much.

David’s fans all speak the same language so yes, what you said makes perfect sense! I often think about how he decides the way he’s going to sing the lyrics. Does he decide spur of the moment, on the spot, or does he study the lyrics beforehand and ‘figger’ it all out before recording? It boggles the mind how he comes up with such unusual phrasing and emphasis on certain syllables. Now, did THAT make any sense? LOL

So excited about David’s new website. It makes me wonder if there’s a new photo shoot that will be used. *SPAZZ* I’m also wondering if this means that the new single is coming out sooner than we think!

bebereader – yep, it makes poifect sense! I guess you can call it “David-ese” – his fans speak it and understand it, no explanations necessary!

No tweets regarding writing sessions, so it makes you wonder, could they be done writing? Do they feel like they have enough good songs already? That would be incredible! … or are they just giving him a little break? Could he be working on a video for the single and then get back to writing?

haha – new photoshoot pics on website? Hate to admit it, but that’s the first thing I wondered too! So glad he is getting an updated one, he deserves nothing but the best!

In regards to your strange night trying to sleep I guess that maybe we should have just written back and forth on the site as it would have made more sense. I awoke at 3:00 am and no caffeine was involved for the reason. So, I wondered what to do because I wasn’t going to get back to sleep and I knew that. So I lay there and began to do a little mind work and was able to decide upon a topic for a new article. I wondered where is my ipod? I felt around in the dark and came up empty. Ah, it was on the hall table. I quietly crept down the hall and found it with the usual knotted earbuds. I hid it under the pillow and David’s solos in ‘Somos El Mundo’ were on there way…After a few runs of it and strange looks from our dog, I fell back to sleep…What can one really make of all of that?

Every day I leave work, get in my car and listen to one particular thing on the short drive home. My CFTH cd (((Abs)), track 4, The Riddle, & track 5, Fields of Gold. When I pull into the driveway, FOG is about 70% done. I cannot get out of my car until it is finished.
It’s been going on for a month or so, and I never ever tire of it. This lyric “see the children run as the sun goes down” still makes me cry about half the time. (the way he sings the word *goes* makes me crazy. It has fifty kinds of nuances. I believe nobody ever could or ever will be able to sing that word like that.

    Hi friends,
Today I had a conversation with a friend that I NEED to share. My good friend said to me, “I see David Archuleta is coming out with a book. Sounds like he is getting a little full of himself.” My friend liked David during AI and knows I am a fan, so I think she was baiting me, and, of course, I jumped right in.

    I said (more or less)
David is a spiritual person who believes his talent is a gift from God. But he also believes what he “does” with his talent is up to him and knows fame is “fickle”and may not last. He also believes he was given his talent as a way to communicate and connect with people and he has a lot to say.
(At this point I am beginning to tear up and get a little shaky.)David is such an amazingly good person. He treats all with love and respect. He is sooo wise for his age,, or any age,,,. He wants to share with people his conviction that all of us can do so much good in our lives if we aren’t afraid to try. David does this on a daily basis, he tries hard to “do good”.
He is putting out the book as another way to tell us how. He is doing it now while he has the opportunity.
(By this time I am trying not to full out cry.)
So, do you think I got it right? Did I say the right thing to a nonbeliever? Do you think my friend thinks I need to be committed?

You said everything perfectly. To say David is “full of himself”, tells you that this person was being insensitive to your feelings, bordering on cruel. Fans know him to be to humble, sincere, and giving.

When was the last time this person stopped (while out running) to help a neighbor lady rake her leaves or spend time going house to house to visit and talk with neighbors? All this on his one day off over a weekend while on tour.

Thanks for letting us know what the Latin community’s reaction to David was from watching the Somos el Mundo video.
I am bringing another comment from Lizzybee, a Spanish speaking fan from the GA who has also been following their tweets.

“It may not seem like much HOWEVER… I’ve been twitter watching his name and there has been a surge in mentions of David Archuleta amongst Spanish speaking users of twitter. Many tweets are shocked that he was in it because he’s not Latino – I tweet them his mom is Honduran and a link to Contigo. Many tweets are saying he’s BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS what a lovely boy, look at those eyes, I think I’m falling in love with him. Many tweets are AMAZED by his beautiful voice. It’s like watching the birth of new fans and it’s completely fantastic. It is SO GREAT that he is being exposed more and more to the latino market because he’s a total natural. All those at the ALMA awards saw it, I just watched that video again and Rita Moreno looks flabbergasted after he sings and says something “wow he’s good” to the people next to her. His performance that night probably was what made people think of him for this project. It was probably the reason this boy that most of Latin America has no clue about got multiple solo parts. The video and those solo parts of his are reaching people who never knew a thing about him. He stands out in the video! I thought it was just me being partial to him but he’s making a huge impression on Latin America. This makes my heart pitter pat so much :)”

Have you ever listened to the way he sings words with that begin with the letter “L” or have the letter “L” in the middle? It doesn’t happen 100% of the time but happens enough to notice. “Lawn”, “aLarm” parentaL controL in “My Hands”, “figger’ (figure) in ALTNOY, “cha-ruth” in Crush, dropping the ending letter g in ‘watchin’ and ‘waitin’ in SOT, turning one syllable words into six or seven syllables (“love” in “Fields of Gold”), the soft ds in almost every song (ay caramba), the ohh ahh ohh ahh, at the beginning of “My Hands”, the soft ‘b’ in ‘baby hold on’ in “My Hands”.

Not to mention the way sings the word/sound “OOOOOOH” in any song.

    This is nuts.

Anyone with any sense is gone to bed….But anyway, djafan I want to tell you that you must have an ipod. You take it everywhere with you and the music is so personal. Doing regular work that needs to be done every day is so much better with the use of your ipod. Best of all, the sound is absolute high quality…but you need soft earbuds. Any new song is right there with you…Be ready for David’s new cd.

SB I have a feeling everyone’s playing over at the new site today. The web seems to be quiet today.

    Let’s make some noise!!!

Is that a familiar sight to you, SB? 😉

Haven’t been home all day and yes it does seem quiet on the net in general. I haven’t been over to the new official David site today or twitter except to see that he is recording again today, Eman must be producing for him. Maybe they’ll be releasing one of these recordings real soon, hopefully…getting antsy…lol

bebe…hadn’t seen that one…don’t you just love him!? I do!

SB..I will have to invest in an ipod and some soft earbuds you’ve convinced me.

OK…Please people on this site, tell me what do you like the best about the new David site? Is it any more informative than the sites we have now? I am serious, I am not too excited so maybe I am missing something, I know how to do that. 😉

    SB,

Hey! Nope. Not too impressed either. Maybe we’re both missing something, though.

How’re you doing? This has been a quiet Saturday. I guess everyone has been like me, spending some quality time with family. That’s important to do sometimes.

Well, someone’s been busy today! Apparently David had a twitter party tonight and I missed it! He’s excited for next week; he’s going to Nashville!

I love that he’s going to Nashville too. I think it’s a good fit for him. Not so fast paced and he loves it there. Maybe he’s a southern boy at heart, since he was born in Florida.

I would be very happy if he settled in the South. 😉

    Hellooooo everybody!
    Crickets.
    Quiet tonight.

Angleica – I hope that one day he settles in the South. He seems to love it – the easy pace & friendliness of everyone he met there left it’s impression on him.
    Nicer climate too.

Who thinks David will get his haircut before he leaves for Nashville? LOL

djafan#102 I heard from emi by email. She is having computer issues and will try to be back online asap.

Had a fun time tonight at The Voice Unplugged. Thanks to all who joined me! We are quite a diverse fanbase, representing four different countries tonight! All because of a beautiful, brilliant and talented young man!

Dear David: You are so loved!!!
