The Power of Passion and a Prayer

Our personal passions have brought us to this place at this exact moment in time. Our passions may in part be different from each other, but together we are here with an enduring passion and appreciation for the music given to us by David Archuleta. Like many of you, I have an immeasurable admiration for David and his music. I am astonished that this young man has the ability to make me smile, laugh heartily and shed tears throughout the span of one song. I never in all of my life thought that I could be brought so close to observing an onstage spiritual presence, but many of us did just that this past December. Perhaps we are in need of reflection to see where we are, what we are doing and what we have been wonderfully given. We have become fussy people and not much else that we hear has us turning our heads even for a moment. During this time I have reflected upon David and his Christmas album that took the music world and enthralled it. I fixed my interest upon the Larry King Live shows just before Christmas, which included Christmas music and conversations with three male artists, Sting, Andrea Bocelli and David. Each of the singers had a Christmas album that was chosen to be highlighted on television. All three albums are different but magnificent in their compositions.
These artists are exceptionally beyond the norm and are passionate people in many walks of their lives. Much has already been written about David and his musical abilities but I learned more about David when I read about Andrea Bocelli. I learned that perhaps when the stars and moon are aligned in the sky, or perhaps when we are desperately in need of feeling the inspirational passions in life, a person who can give us that music comes our way.
I have two dreams I dare to dream and one is that David will sing “The Lord’s Prayer” with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the other is that someday he will sing it with Andrea. So many singers from all avenues of music have sung with Andrea including Pavaroti, Christina Aguilera and even the Muppets! I have here the video of “The Lord’s Prayer” introduced to me by tawna21. Hopefully the stars will line up and make it possible for these two fantastic voices to eventually collide. After listening to David sing the glorious carols including “Ave Maria” and “O Holy Night”, and listening to Andrea Bocelli sing “The Lord’s Prayer” performed in Salt Lake City in December 2009, an immediate visualization came to me of David and Andrea singing it together. David and Andrea both slowly execute the words of a song, a technique called adagio, allowing time for the listener to capture the true meanings and feel the emotions. When we look at “The Lord’s Prayer”, the words are few but the song is immense.
Here is my vision but it seems so real to me. Please listen to the video as you imagine them singing together with the Tabernacle choir, harp and orchestra.

Seems I may not be the only one having a hard time letting go of CFTH tour (and special appearances) memories. Feed my need listening & watching videos in the chat room. Made a CD of the billboard concert & that remains in my car ready for long rides home alone (2 nites a week).

I loved the song Collide (perfect song) with the pics of Bocelli and David and now more than ever I wish these two would get together and sing something.

I just want to thank you for introducing me to Andrea Bocelli. I was not really familiar with him except by name and reputation. Your article tweeked my interest and I learned from you and by googling that he has been blind since the age of 12, and in spite of that adversity, went on to become a lawyer. His first love was always music though and he sang in nightclubs until he was discovered in 1987. The rest is history and he has become world-renowned.
I have watched the video several times since getting this ready for posting and it was on about the 5th viewing first thing this morning that the full impact of this beautiful understated performance hit me. So many amazing nuances suddenly revealed themselves. It is SO powerful as he ever so gradually builds to that ethereal crescendo of an ending.
How I would love to witness and hear David and Andrea perform this song together in that glorious setting. I hope the stars align and your dream comes true.
One of the things you pointed out to me as we discussed this article is Andrea’s penchant for wearing scarves. We know who else loves to protect his lovely throat that way. I included some pics you sent me of both of them wearing scarves in the slide show I did. Thanks for a sharing this soul-enriching article and your vision of a little glimpse of what can only be described as heaven on earth. From your lips to God’s ears.

SandyBeaches: Bravo! Your writing talents are warmly welcomed here at The Voice! The dream of an Archuleta/Bocelli collaboration is very exciting and I can actually see it happening one day. I’m sure David would be proud to be compared to Bocelli, one of the greatest singers of all time. I watched the Larry King special too and remember thinking that David was finally being recognized for his amazing talents and being placed where he rightfully belongs, on a list alongside Andrea Bocelli.

SandyBeaches—what can I say?! Thank you for your warm thoughts on this chilly February day. I, too, hope that your dreams come true. It is a dream that I certainly want to be a part of. I’ve been told by a couple of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir members that I know, that when David and Kendra sang with them during practice one day they were in complete awe of his abilities and love for music. The choir is a tough group, too, as they are all very trained musicians. Their auditions are incredible.
Anyway, I love the feelings that have come from reading your words and listening again to the music. I just can’t describe them other than I was completely swept into another place.
I must, at this point, thank Abrra for creating the mp4 of the Lord’s Prayer for me. I originally received it as an email link. Thanks, Abs.

Bebe…For some reason I am not wanting to actually compare David to Andrea even though so much falls into place about them that is familiar. They are totally devoted to their music, their families, their religions, children’s charities and I could go on from there. But, there is something about them that carries a different air and perhaps it is something passionate and gentle that is amazingly attractive.

I’m a great admirer of Andrea Bocelli, I had read about his life story and purchased his music regularly. I would listen to him for relaxation, quieting the mind. Have loved the duets he’s had over the years, some more than others, but to have him share the stage with this young man you describe, it would be such an epic event for them and us the fans of both. Hope the collision happens in the near future.

Needless to say, today had to be one of the longest days at work! I didn’t have time to read your article before I left for work and there was no way I could sneak a peek at The Voice at work. I was so anxious to get home..and it was worth the wait!
I knew your article would be wonderful, but I was not prepared for just how inspiring it is. I’m sure David would be honored by your words. I have always admired Andrea especially after I read his story. It amazing to me that even though his voice is operatic, many more pop singers would love to the opportunity to sing a duet with Andrea. Someday David may have the confidence to sing with Andrea, but knowing what we know about David..at this point in his career, I think he would think he is not worthy to sing a duet with Andrea Bocelli. He would be wrong of course! Someday though, I believe your dream of a duet between The Voice and Andrea will come to pass..sooner than we think. Maybe next Christmas. Your article is a masterpiece!
A note to Angelica..after every video, after every slide show, when I think there is no way you can top yourself..you top yourself! Are you for real? WHO ARE YOU and WHERE DID YOU COME FROM? Must be the same place as David. Absolute perfect video for a perfect article!

First SB’s article caused me to get down on the floor, on my knees and pray that this will happen, or because I’m selfish, just David singing it with the Choir. THEN Angelicas slide show, well that was a big THUD to the floor .Oh my God, those pictures! I’ll never be the same. THEN to add insult to injury DJA’s discovery of the book cover. I knew something was up when I saw djafan’s text to me this morning:
“Beeeeeeebeeeeee”.
And then I signed online and saw the book cover! Holy Moly! The book is real! Not that I ever doubted it but somehow seeing it makes it more real! I takes a lot to make me scream out loud. hehe dja are your eardrums okay? I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by it’s cover but who can help it? David looks adorably pensive; the font is similar to the one used on his first CD cover; love the light shining in the background. Oh did I mention that I just love it?
Okay I’m done. For now.

And SB, I love the idea of David singing someday with Andrea and MTC. I recently watched the David Foster and Friends show and when Andrea sang The Prayer with Katherine McPhee (who did a beautiful job, IMO), I couldn’t help but get all dreamy thinking about how magnificent the pairing of Andrea and David would be. Here’s hoping someday. And I would like to add a favorite of mine, Amazing Grace, to that performance.
David’s book will be 224 pages??? That’s a whole lota words coming from one who has often complained about his inability to express himself. Excuse me while I squee!!!

Well, that’s what I thought at first. 😉 Then I went to Amazon and OMG! I saw it was REAL! David’s very awesomeage, gorgeous, stunning cover-photo for his book! WOWZEEEE! When did he have a photo-shoot for the book? He usually lets us know when he’s doing a photo-shoot, doesn’t he? I am so “delighted” (his word) it’s a recent photo and not one from two years’ or even a year ago. He looks like HIMSELF, a 19 year old young MAN. GAHHHHHH!

Hi everyone. I thought I’d chime in with some random thoughts and pithy observations regarding the Archu-universe:
Loved that impromptu, coffee house performance of “Crush” the other night. David has earned the respect and admiration of the folks who write his songs, It’s hard to tell if their songs are even that good, because as soon as David gets a hold of it, it is transformed into an instant classic. David can also sing the same song many different ways. In David’s hands ,”Crush” can be a uptempo pop song and can also be a “torch” song, equally terrific.
I’ve been watching American Idol with a remote in one hand and a barf bag in the other. These unfair comparisons of Aaron Kelly to David speak to the desperation the Producers of the show are obviously experiencing. Give Aaron a break. He’s a nice kid. Could these contestants be more generic? Seeing these folks on the same stage that David made TV history is tough to take. Could you imagine if David was in this year’s group? At least there will be a competition this year since no one is showing any star power. At least there were some very talented people in Season 7 to keep it interesting.
Along with with everyone else I have my fingers crossed for a book signing tour when David’s book comes out. The Barnes and Noble on 46th St. and Fifth Ave will do fine, with the line stretching to the Staten Island ferry. With the chance to have David sign their book and meet him for a few seconds, “Chords of Strength” should make the Times Best Seller list overnight.
Regarding the cover of the book, David is so impossibly handsome and captivating in that pic (and in real life), I wonder how much actual reading of the book will take place.
Hope everyone here is well, and enduring this insane winter in the Northeast. I look forward to seeing many of you at future concerts and, I hope, at a book signing.

This is a demo and David (Cook) is pretty exacting in his standards I don’t know if this is what he meant by a surprise.
Yeah, he seemed pretty annoyed when the SNIPPETS from Cherry Lane were found and fans started tweeting him about them. He was like, they’re demos and not finished, etc. etc. I’m pretty sure he didn’t want this to be leaked, but this kinda stuff happens.
I doubt a 2008 leftover will make this album though. That’s fine– it’s decent but not amazing melodically or lyrically… I think I’d like the new album to have different sounds and even more Cook’ian lyrics. Wonder how that Brazilian site got their hands on these songs. I wonder if it’s getting used for something, like that One Second to Change Your Life song for ESPN…
Archie’s song sounds pretty good though. I can hear something like that on the radio– in fact it’s better than similar songs on the radio. As usual Archie elevates the entire genre with his vocals.

I’m taking bets that “She’s Not You” is a leftover from David’s first cd. Clue: The writers listed are Eman, Jesse Cates and Lindsey Robbins. David is co-writing EVERY song for his new CD and his name is not listed for this song. JMHO.

Amuses me when I read comments that David would not write or want to sing a song with a line about “trying to kiss” a girl. Whaaat! My goodness.. shocking, shameful… why on earth would David sing those scathing lyrics?
The irony is, the words aren’t even used in the context that it sounds like they are objecting to.
*Please excuse my crankiness. Maybe “amuse” isn’t the right verb.
(Wasn’t there a VIP where he talked about how he really like some of the songs that didn’t make the album?)
I like the song – he sounds great, catchy, and something the younger fans can relate to.

Just wanted to share my thoughts on this “new” leak! I LOVE IT!!
It’s catchy, and David’s voice sounds more mature so I don’t feel like it’s something from his first album. The whole vibe sounds different to me — even the instruments are not as prudent as they were on the first album — you can really hear him!! It actually reminds me of two artists — Natasha Beddingfield (who has great pop/soul songs) and Jon Secada! haha remember him?? I can even picture everyone swinging their arms like (Waiting for Yesterday) to this. Ok, ok, I’m a little giddy over this. JMO. 🙂

Have listened to the leaked song numerous times and I love it, it’s stuck in my head, super catchy. So I’m biased, had my granddaughter and daughter listen, they love it. My granddaughter immediately put it on her ipod. Is it old or is it newish? Who knows at this point, but we have a new song for now and I’m enjoying.

Hey SB,
I do want to comment on your article even though I am a day late. I’ve been thinking about it, and it occured to me that when I was in high school, my church had a Andrea Bocelle sounding tenor as our youth choir director and Sunday worship leader. He was tall, dark and handsome, and I was not without a crush on him. His singing was beautiful and almost perfect, marred only by his arrogance. (not seen in David or Andrea) I rememeber though, at the time, wishing that pop music, or “my music,” had more singers that expressed words like and sang like our tenor did. … that must be that “adagio.” I am just so glad to have the word adajio for it now. David certainally has more than fulfiled my wish! Thanks for the beautiful, sensory filled article.. I could see it, hear it and feel it!

Listen closely to the words that seem to match the pics because they are saying something. Angelica always has meaning (sometimes hidden) and that is one part of her work that is awesome. Well Abrra, #163 I have to be serious for a minute. Look at his ear and down his neck below his ear . He is so dang allergic to that serious looking ear phone that it amazes me that no one has said “David that is causing you a major reaction” and it isn’t the first time that he has had a very red ear. There is too much electricity going through it. My spazz is over but someone please don’t put him through that again as it is unhealthy.
I am calm now…until I see that thing in his ear again charging up his head, now I am calm, really.

Everyone who has heard the “new” song loves it. I don’t exactly “love” it, but I do like it very much but I must be honest. I don’t think it’s a song I would listen to over & over, like SOT, TBWY, Desperate, Falling or his live versions of DLG, WFY & My Hands, or his cover of Angels or The Riddle, POTC or FOG. Or most of the songs on CFTH, which I still listen too almost daily. What I envisioned David would be recording for this next album would rival any and all those songs. He said himself he wanted this album to reflect him & his personality & thoughts. I understood him to mean there will be deep messages as well as upbeat quirky lyrics, with some soul & R&B grooves as well as pop. I think this is why he’s collaborating with so many different style writers. He’s a complex personality and it may not be so easy for some of the writers he’s working with to come up with exactly what David wants. This is all my opinion and I have been known to be wrong. I think if David & his collaborators can interpret what is swirling in his beautiful head & heart, they may very well come up with Grammy-worthy material. She’s Not You is a really good pop song, but it’s not really what he’s “about”, not yet anyway, now is it? 🙂
If this leaked song is a new song (which I doubt) and it’s on his new album..well it will just prove I was wrong and it won’t be the first or last time. 😉
