Confessions of a Grown Up Woman With ODD

Funny thing how love starts. You never know where Cupid is lurking, or where his arrow is pointed. You are even less suspecting if you are minding your own business, and living a typical married with kids life. The next thing you know, while casually tuning into one of your favorite TV shows, you feel a sudden sting squarely on your backside. You shake it off and everything is fine. Until the next Tuesday night anyway. The arrows just keep on flying. Surely this must be some mistake. What else could explain this rush of feelings? You start looking around for someone to blame. Where is Cupid hiding now? Where does he get the nerve flinging arrows at you anyway? Isn’t there some invisible force field protecting you? You are madly truly in love with your husband.
Sure David is crazy talented and you are very impressed. Week after week you can’t bear the thought of him getting voted off. You start to NEED to hear him sing every week. The show ceases to be fun. So what..he can sing. You start to ask yourself the hard questions. What are you doing? Why are you so taken with this kid? Why does your heart break every time he opens his mouth? Why does he smile so much? Why is he so sweet? Why are you rewatching the performances on YouTube? What if they get deleted? What will you do if he goes home? You must vote more. When did he become so pretty? Isn’t he a minor? Should you be looking so closely at his lips?
The spiral into ODD has taken over.
You are no longer in control. Whatever it is that fills you up when he sings has taken the wheel. Powerless, weak, afraid, overwhelmed and at the same time strong, powerful, fearless, and at peace. For the first time in a long time, you feel weightless, yet the burden of the show sits quietly on your shoulders. The archu-albatross is heavy, and you bear it alone. Who can you tell that would understand? How can you explain something that you don’t even understand yourself? People are already starting to notice your nerves on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and your constant comments about the show. Then, in a moment of dumb luck, and perhaps the guiding hand of God, you find an on-line community of others that seem to be struck just as sharply by Cupid’s arrow. Finally, you have come home.
The best and the worst happens – the show is over. And your boy doesn’t win. You will get on with your life now. You’ll go to the Idols Tour and buy his CD. Everything will be OK.
You can’t believe your ears now that you’ve seen him live. Is there another show you could make it to? YouTube videos start popping up after every AI tour stop. You’ll just watch a few. You start to love the sparkly suit. The tour ends. You miss the suit. You have seen fifty-three sets of videos from the tour and it isn’t enough. The album is coming out soon. There is talk of a solo tour! How many shows can you make it to? There are polls to vote on. Appearances, talk shows, Jingle Jams. Overseas tour with McFly. US tour with Demi…when are tickets on sale? No way you are joining Demi’s fan club for earlier tix! What’s the website again? VIP upgrades. How many can I drive to? Maybe I have some frequent flier miles I can use? Christmas album. New CD next year.
The madness shall never end my friend. All we are left with is the ODD Lifestyle Maintenance Guide. Sadly, such a reference doesn’t exist yet. There are many ways to scale it back, make it more manageable. Keep it under wraps. You learn when to talk and when to hide it. You make peace with it. You accept it. You stop judging yourself. You no longer care what anyone thinks of your “hobby.” You can then simply become one with the Voice.
When I first saw the Hartford Apologize, you know the close-up one…something struck me. When I watch his jaw and mouth it makes me think of sweet woodland animals foraging for nuts and berries. There is something so primal, so universal, and sweet about his mouth forming words.
The experience of the Voice is like the first time seeing the ocean, the first cry from your newborn baby, the sweetest candy to ever touch your tongue, and the first kiss from your true love. I don’t know what it is about that Voice, coming out of that face, that hurts so good. Lord have Mercy on us all David – but please don’t stop.
*now off to therapy with that mic stand from the last performance* It ain’t gonna be pretty.

Love that twilight zone song with David’s serious face on the embeded video. Trying to explain the ODD to my logical mind has been a frustrating endeavor.

Hello,No explanation for the “effect david”, two people living in different parts of the world feel the same way about David. Our condition called ODD has no cure and I hope I never find it, by that since I’ve been happy. I feel I can do everything. There is a story by Edgar Allan Poe: a madman who had chased a moonbeam and was happy, but when retrieve the reason, his happiness was gone. And its also moonlight.
David will always be my moonlight, I do not care anyone says, I’m happy and I know David is happy, that’s enough.

FG, you really need to stop this before I hurt myself laughing. And phooey on hiding the ODD, I vote for rampant exploitation of it. The night of David’s Billboard Live concert I had my son upstairs hooking up my laptop to the big screen TV with surround sound and my husband in the barn doing the last feeding of the animals. Those who did not want to watch the concert were asked (okay, maybe told) not to make noise. They were good boys and watched and enjoyed….

Having been thrown into a circumstance of not hearing David sing one note and not seeing even one eyelash for a week, I am here to give testimony that going cold turkey doesn’t even work on ODD.
On the third day of abstinence, I thought maybe I wouldn’t be as obsessed with him when I got home– I’ve made it this far and I’m still breathing, right. NOT!!
Arriving home and literally tripping over my own feet in a mad dash to the computer, what do I do first? Feast my eyes on his face in silence or turn the volume up and soak in “No Air” (with the tucked in shirt, no less). AAAH pure heaven! Even better than getting to sleep in your own bed!
This young man is so deeply embedded in my heart and being, that five days of medication didn’t even touch the disease of ODD.
Therefore, don’t anybody waste their time using that approach.
FG that arrow is in a place that can not be touched nor do I want it to be.
What’s next? The LOONEY BIN?

That is the sweetest comment. I have a very special place in my heart for fans such as you. Many thousands of miles away from David, yet you stay connected as if you were here in the US. I know the extra effort you go to in the chat room to use a foreign language(English) when Spanish would be so easy. The day you said you were going to become a lawyer in order to help the less fortunate in your country, I knew David would be so proud to know he has fans like you. ODD isn’t always a disease. It can be the Path.

Looking back, my full-fledged ODD started when the AI tour began and I saw the first videos. Before that I was in awe of David. Something happened when I first heard him sing “Heaven”. His voice reached out to me and started mending my broken heart. He reached right into my soul and I felt alive for the first time in a very long time. At that time I thought surely this beautiful young man with the voice of an angel had to be an Angel himself. Then the more I watched him and read about him, I knew he was very special, but little did I know I would soon be committing my allegiance to him. That I would be an fan for life, unconditionally. The AI tour just sealed the deal for me. By the Utah concerts, I was a goner. I had a severe case of ODD, although I didn’t know it at the time. I knew then that David was not really an Angel..I mean, an Angel wouldn’t, couldn’t move across the stage LIKE THAT! A Celestial Being wouldn’t, couldn’t make all these women (& men, too) swoon & catch a breath at the very sight of him. Suddenly I began to see him differently. But He’s only 17!! WTH! And I cried after the first time I saw him up close. I was so pathetic. It was pretty bad. Then he turned 18! Then 19!! Problem is, we are all having birthdays too. And I envied all the fans under 35-40. They will have so many more years with David than I. 😦
I always wondered if there would ever be a 12 step program for ODD, cause it is an addiction. A sweet addiction to be sure, but an addiction just the same as any other addiction. We are all addicted to David, to The Voice. It is truly a phenomenon simply because of the age & gender variance of David’s very devoted fans. I’ve just never seen anything like this before. 😉

#11 Gladys I love the story of Edgar Allen Poe’s moombean yet I spend my days trying to figure out all that makes David, David. Those thoughts flow thru my days like a melody. Somehow I just know that David has so much to teach us that he hasn’t even said, or shown, and that we have not heard yet, and yet I am so thankful for all we have seen and heard and been shown. It seems like everyday there is something more.

I remember first meeting you at Rickey’s, along with so many others, and being so glad that I wasn’t going crazy with these feelings I was having for this amazing young man. How in the world was he touching us in this way with just being him? I may never know, but oh how I love having him in my life.
Question: Does anyone else, during church services, wish you could hear David sing the songs being sung?

Just dropping by to give a great big {{{CYBER HUG}}} to FG for this terrific post! Good golly, if you didn’t nail my EVERY emotion, EVERY thought, EVERY gobsmacked whattheheck just happened to me since first laying eyes and ears on the Archulicious during Hollywood week. And now, two years later, I am even more obsessed with the kid…thankfully due in no small measure to the steady supply of goodies on
the awesome fansites that flame the fires. I am convinced that I will be taking this ODD with me to the grave.
More than a few times my family has threatened to have me hauled off in a straight jacket. My hubby has questioned my devotion to him (“babe, it’s just his VOICE that I love” lol), and most of my friends just roll their eyes when I so much as mention David’s name. I, too, have learned to be careful when to speak his name, although for the most part I really don’t care what the unenlightened think of me anymore. I do believe that sooner or later they will come to their senses.
“I don’t know what it is about that Voice, coming out of that face, that hurts so good.” “Hurts so good” is sooo right on!
So thank you FG, and all the Admins here at The Voice and Unplugged (gotta also send love to ALL the David sites), for keeping me sane in the midst of my insanity, for the brilliant articles, for the laughs and the friendships and the pics and the videos and the chats. It is nourishment for my soul, and an absolute HOOT to be a fan of David’s in cyberspace!

Since there seems to be new names today I would like to remind everyone that ODD stands for Obsessive David Disorder. When I finally found these web sites about a year ago, I kept seeing this ODD thingy talked about. I kind of guessed it might have something to do with how I had been acting, but it took some investigating to pin it down. Yep that was me and I didn’t even know it!
My experience with ODD began during the last couple weeks of AI. My daughter and I would phone each other each week after the performances. We both liked the two Davids, I, of course, prefered our David and she the other David. It was all just fine until one night when she said,,,,, “David Cook is just a lot better. He is more creative!!!”
I couldn’t breath. I jumped out of my chair and began to pace the entire house. “Don’t you see this kid has a voice like no other person in the world? Can’t you hear it? Can’t you see how adorable and beautiful and funny and amazing David is?” I went on and on, totally out of control! I happened to glance in the bathroom mirror and saw a big red face and wild eyes! Hmmmmm, I thought,,,, this is odd,,,, I think I am insane.
And so it goes……

Yesterday, I told my husband that David Archuleta called me on my cell phone and told me to tell him that I loved him and Happy Valentine’s Day. (I even let him listen to a part of his singing, haha). My sweet husband just did one of his eye rolls and with a smile said “ummmm, okay, thanks! He knows I have ODD but he has no idea how bad! Yeah, things like looking so closely at those lips…I keep that to myself, and how I love those church slacks in the No Air video…uh hum…Anyway… It’s nice to know I’m not alone. David Archuleta grabbed my soul with his beautiful voice and spirit 2 years ago, and now it’s even more intense! How is that possible? I do know it is impossible not to love the guy!
Sure, I probably connect with that mic stand more than I should, but I’ll pass on the ODD Lifestyle Maintenance Guide. I’m very happy where I am. It might be a good idea to start a support group for our husbands though, haha.
All kidding aside, I greatly respect and admire David. He has made my life better, and I will be his fan forever!

Angelica, I would like to add my vote to Emme’s for keeping the hip swizzle on the front page forevah and evah pleeeezzze.
I will never forget David’s shoulder shakin’ moves on Guitar Hero. It was then that I knew without a doubt that the soul man was in there. If anybody out there has some footage of the feet moves on the swizzle move, I am not above groveling to see some of that.
We’ve been getting some sunshine down this way and it just put me in a spring “lurv”ly state of mind. Here’s the Four Tops “Sugar Pie Honey Bunch” for your entertainment (will need to suspend gender and a few of the lyrics don’t quite apply) but otherwise this just makes me smile. Couldn’t remember if this had been posted before.

I dropped coffee on the laptop keyboard while trying to post here yesterday. Thank goodness we have a netbook as the laptop is off to be repaired (maybe). David Archuleta is a fine hobby. He is the reason my child ate nothing but microwave foods during the AI tour and why I nearly burned the house down with the toaster oven while watching You Tube. Frozen pizza does not normally need 2 hours to cook. It is powerful stuff, what he does to us. I even stooped so low as to consider duct taping my child to a pole in the basement so I could watch the premiere of Crush on Z100 in peace.

Hello everyone!
FG I’m feeling you…so busy with family the last couple of days that I didn’t have a chance to visit David and my online friends. This ODD actually seems to have intensified and I don’t see any signs of it going away. To actually feel anxious because you can’t get to the computer is something foreign to me, but very real…lol

Fifty-three sets of youtube vids later with no prospects of ever seeing it again and suddenly *kabaaam* I could see in my mind’s eye every crease and sparkle. How it moved during the Beautiful Girls dancing part in SBM, how it fell during the hunkerdowns in Apologize…..*sigh*
Remember when *GASP* *vomit burp* *whhhhheeeez* the other David put the jacket on? HERETIC, demon seeeeed. Then the next show the jacket was MIA???? Every religious leader in the state of Florida was called in to exorcise it. That’s right, the show sans jacket was Sunrise, Florida – I know this without checking, cuz that’s how momma rolls.

It’s been snowing here in NY all day. Just got home to find myself stuck in the WYSYLM vortex, thanks to {{FG}}. Since I was deprived (robbed?) of going to one of the AI7 Tour shows I’m obsessed with hearing anything and everything about it including the fans’ reactions to David and his set. From all the youtubes it seems that fans went absolutely wild during David’s set! For anyone who was there, is that true?
FG, that vimeo/video of WYSYLM is terrific! Sometimes ODD takes hold and you can’t help but tune everything else out. The phone may have been ringing but I didn’t notice. About that silver jacket, can we pass it around the site so everyone can get a turn?

I went to two AI tour shows. David was next to last and Cook was last. At both the crowds cheered and applauded loudly for all the contestants. But when at last David and the piano came rising up from the floor amid all the smoke, it was pandemonium. The screams were deafening. It made all the cheering that had gone before seem like a mere smattering of applause. Men, women, teens all got to their feet and yelled like Apaches on the warpath! I was proud to be one of the tribe. 😆

Oh Angelica! That is just what I wanted to hear! It shows that despite where David came in the running, the fans showed their love and devotion in a huge way!
Of course David would never admit, even to himself that the screams were deafening for him and that pandemonium broke loose when he arose from the pit, playing “Angels”. But I have to ask one more question. By the look on his face, was it obvious to him that he got thunderous applause?
I’ve seen the tears in his eyes on the youtube videos but it’s not the same as being there to witness it live. Anybody who knows me is aware of my obsession with this question. LOL

After singing Angels, he reacted to the applause by smiling briefly but never said a word. He just got up, losing the smile and dramatically walked slowly up the stairs to the top. Slow turn at the top of the stairs and then the deep, sadness in his voice as he launched into Apologize. Down the stairs, stopping on the second to the last step for a moment and then the anger building as he stomped down to the floor and wailed and stomped some more. Like he had had enough and was putting his foot down and ending a relationship that had caused him too much pain. I took that tweet in a completely different way. I copied and pasted it to keep. I was excited to hear he had just discovered the word catharsis because I think it’s a wonderful word too. His music is a definite catharsis for him and in a much smaller way, what my videos do for me and the emotional roller coaster of ODD. I don’t know how people deal with ODD without a creative way of achieving that catharsis…

I was watching Fox 13 news tonight (local station here in Utah), and at the very end, they said that they’ll be airing a special about David tomorrow night! It’s going to be an hour long (I’m pretty sure that’s what they said…I was kind of spazzing inside, so I might’ve heard wrong), and it’s going to showcase his journey on AI, as well as talk about how his fame and success has impacted Murray High. They also mentioned something about “tips for teachers.” I have NO idea what that means, but I’m guessing it might be advice to teachers who have famous students? I have NO idea, lol. But anyway, they said it will air Wednesday (I’m assuming tomorrow, since they didn’t say “next Wednesday”) at 9 pm MST. I have no way of recording it, but I’m thinking it can be streamed live from the site, just like other broadcasts. Let’s hope this is the case! If so, here’s a link to the Fox 13 site:

I’ve been through the Angels videos for Tulsa, Sacramento, Tacoma, Hartford, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Houston, Philadelphia and Portland and I’m not having any luck, so far. But I don’t give up easily. There are 44 more cities to check on the AI7 tour, providing they are on youtube. Hey it’s a tough job but I’m loving every minute of it!

I just called the local Fox affiliate and was told the segment featuring David is actually about how schools deal with high-profile students. Evidently they interviewed people at Murray High with respect to how David’s fame has affected that institution. He also told me it is a two-part report by a new reporter at their station. Unfortunately he was unsure of the details and everyone else who might know of this were out to lunch or not in yet, but he says if there was a teaser about it last night on the local news it should be broadcast tonight. They stream all their news broadcasts. He did not know exactly what time during the regular broadcast (9:00 PM to 10:PM MST) this segment would air. I just set my DVR!

here is an excerpt from the article about Spanish version of We Are The World..what is confusing is that they are supposedly recording tomorrow in Miami..David is in LA. Unless he is recording his part in LA, so that would mean HE would not be singing with the group??
“The recording will take place tomorrow, Friday at American Airlines Practice Court in Miami, Florida taking advantage of the situation of the Premios Lo Nuestro and will be released on March 1 on the Cristina Show on Univision. I think this Latin remake will be better than the English remake. I like the company David is keeping — Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan and Jon Secada!!
I was thinking maybe David recorded his part already — he was up until 3:00 a.m. this morning! Or, it says the “Final Recording” will be on Friday — in that case he can make it to Miami!
It will be aired on the Univision channel on March 1 and they are making a video of it!!
Spazzing….what a great opportunity for David.
Don’t forget tonight at 11:00 he is on the Fox 13 Utah channel (sorry don’t have the link) talking about Murray High School and the effect famed students have on it.
