Connections
Posted by Abrra on Wednesday, January 20, 2010
A huge snowstorm was looming in the gray skies over Newark as I boarded the train for Providence. My mood was resigned. I had made the painful decision to forgo David Archuleta’s last two Christmas concerts in Boston and Westbury. I stared glumly out the window, cursing the blizzard that had destroyed my plans to connect with David again. The train was filled to capacity with people heading home for the holidays. The seat beside me soon became empty and mysteriously remained that way through three more stops of passengers jostling to board. Suddenly, I looked up to see a tall young man in his early twenties. He smiled and politely asked, “May I sit here?” That was the beginning of a remarkable conversation that lasted until John Torrey got off in Norwich, Connecticut.
John is a student at Princeton University. As the train sped onward through the frigid landscape, he talked to me about his life at college and how he spends his time in summer between semesters. He does volunteer work in Bagamoyo, Tanzania in an AIDS clinic for women and children, teaching healthy lifestyle habits and disease prevention. No small task in an impoverished village where health care is virtually non-existent but for the works of good Samaritans, like John and other volunteers for UKUN. As John wrote in a subsequent email I requested since our meeting, “UKUN also provides care to over 5,000 orphaned and vulnerable children through coordinating support services….providing clients with nutritional assistance, counseling and testing, transportation to the hospital, physical therapy, ARV monitoring, income generating opportunities, referrals to social services in the community, AIDS education in schools, and much more. They serve as the eyes and ears of the Bagamoyo medical community because they actually enter communities and residences. At the moment, UKUN is facing a funding crisis, so I spent most of my time writing letters and grants in an effort to obtain funds. I also went on numerous home visits and helped to transport clients to the hospital. Along with other volunteers, I set up what is now a regular support group for HIV-positive women. Separately from UKUN, I also taught and played with children at a local center for orphaned and vulnerable children called IMUMA every weekday.”
As I listened to his story of the plight of the Tanzanian people, I immediately felt that John was a person David would be proud to know. Here was someone doing the hands on work close to David’s heart and fund raising efforts. They are connected in that way, he and David, strangers and brothers at the same time in their mission. I began to talk about David’s work with various foundations prompting John to exclaim that, “David certainly seems like my kind of person!” This was my opening to offer John a Christmas Tour CD. He promised to play it with his family when he got home. I showed him some of my videos with my IPhone that feature David singing “Save the Day” and “Falling”. My seatmate was delighted with the songs and the Voice. Then he told me that he was a songwriter! Was there nothing this charming young man did not attempt?
Before we parted, I asked John what his goal was in life. His answer: “To bring peace to the world by working to improve health care in poor countries. I want to write grants for funds to help the continuing effort to raise these people out of poverty so they can support themselves.” John, like David has a deep feeling of responsibility to try his best to make the world a better place. I am proud to call John Torrey my friend. I am almost sure David would be too.
The train pulled into Norwich and my companion got off with a wave and a promise to keep in touch. Strangers on a train, connected for a moment that would last forever. I sat back in my seat and felt the smile return that he had placed there; felt my spirits rise as the train gathered speed. I had missed my connection with David, but I had made the connection I was meant to keep.
Connections
How am I connected to you?
How are you connected to me?
How are we connected to the small girl who plays
With her doll on a porch in the summer in L. A.?
How is she connected to us?
How were you connected to your husband or wife
Before you first met later on in your life?
How were you bound to her joys or his strife?
How did this matter to you?
How am I connected to you?
How are you connected to me?
How are we connected to the farmer who plows
Out his small field of maize miles north of Callao?
How are his story and ours tied right now?
How are we connected to him?
How are you connected to the small child who dies
Of severe diarrhea in the slums of Mbuji Mayi?
When pennies from your pocket could have kept him alive
‘Till his fifty-first year when his grandchild turns five?
How are you connected to him?

Abrra, I’m so impressed, I can’t even find the words. Impressed with this young man whom you were meant to meet! How fortunate for the both of you.
I have to get ready for work now, but you have given me so much to think about today besides my own “woe is me” life I sometimes find myself wallowing in. Thank you for sharing this very wonderful and inspiring story of your friendship with this remarkable young man which started, when you come right down to it, because of David, another remarkable young man.
Have a great day!

Abrra, thank you for sharing that wonderful story! I could picture you on that train to Providence (where I have been many times, so near to Mass., my home state). That meeting with John Torrey on that train was one of those “appointments” you were meant to keep. There will be other meetings with David, and wouldn’t it be great if you some day could introduce the two? You never know, in this journey called “life!” And what an interesting journey it is!

Have you guys heard the recording of David singing “The Spirt of God Like a Fire Is Burning” in Spanish while in Honduras last week? The audio quality is not ideal, but I believe it becomes more and more beautiful each time I listen to it. I’m not sure how to embed on this site, but here is the link:

What a remarkable meeting with a young man… who is filled with a world of compassion.
After reading your story, I looked up some information about Tanzania.
Swahili is one of the languages spoken there, and in the place where John volunteers, “Bagamoyo” means: “Lay down your heart!”

Abrra, what an inspiration John Torrey is. What a blessing that you were where you were supposed to be at that moment in time, although it meant missing David. Was this a coincidence? I don’t think so. Could you have been on another train? Probably not–you were headed home. Could the seat next to you have been occupied? Yes, but it hadn’t been for three stops. Could you or John have decided to each just keep to your own thoughts (and you to your misery)? Yes, but you didn’t. Was this meant to happen? I, personally, think it was. Abs, you are such an ambassador of good will, that people are drawn to you like hummingbirds to sweet, red flowers on a sunny day. You are an example of good. I’m so glad that I “e-know” you. You bring smiles to my life. Thank you for sharing this event.
“Dali cujete sve djecje molitive?” (Croation translation: “Can you hear all the children’s prayers”?). Kurt Bestor ends the song with these words, when he sings it. The prayers of the children. We can be part of the answer they are looking for and needing.

Abrra,
I remember soon after this happened, you called to talk to me about it and about doing an article. You were so excited and (if you will pardon my telling), got choked up at one point. It was obvious that this young man’s story and his beautiful spirit had a profound effect on you.
You bring to this site and to fans everywhere a personal touch that is so special. How many CDs have you burned and mailed out to fans, given away at concerts and shared with people you meet? From your last article, “A Tale of Two Cities” to this, you tell the story of the ordinary (and extraordinary) man on the street that you eagerly share David’s music with.
You spend countless exhausting hours locating, cataloging, and uploading the best David videos out there for The Voice Unplugged Videochat room, connecting people from all over the world. In all the army of David’s many fans, you are one of his most selfless soldiers.
Thank you so much for everything you do.

Thank you all for taking time to read the article. It was truly an enjoyable experience talking with John. It’s heartwarming to know there are young people out there who take action where it is most needed without complaint. I got the impression John saw his volunteering as a privilege. He used words like “serving his fellow man” to make their lives better.
Angelica is right. I did get emotional when I tried to explain the impact this meeting had on me. I had this story in my head for 2 months. Unable to put into words how much talking with John reminded me of David and his charity works.
Again, thank you all for taking time to read and explore this wonderful charity that helps some of the most vulnerable people on earth. Our children.

There may be time when Livestream is doing maintenance which can cause the videos to not work. This is rare.
For you and everyone who come to the site here are some tips. I tried to make it simple.
1.)Please read the ticker scrawl for help with lag or stopped video
2.)For best viewing use Firefox. Be sure to have the newest ver of FlashPlayer here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (Uncheck that box for McAfee security scan)
3.)If there is a black video screen try the pause/play button a few times. It will reset the video.
4.)Last resort is to reboot. If your computer has been online for many hours it may need a fresh boot.
I will be around evenings for the next few weeks doing uploading. I am happy to help if you have any questions.

To me, It is beyond obvious that your meeeting with John Torrey was orchestrated by the Master Conductor Himself, and it is as beautiful a composition as any that David has ever sung! Thank you for telling this story again. I heard about it when it first happened and I was touched. The retelling has moved me to rethink my position on that “entitled 20 something generation” and encourgaed me to move myself from that comfortable position on my couch and do something helpful too.

Abrra: Thank you for sharing your experience! I find that there’s always a reason someone comes into our lives. Generally it’s to teach us or give us something we need, which hopefully enriches us forever, a la David Archuleta. From the way you described John Torrey, he has a heart of gold, like David.
Before he sings “Prayer of the Children” David says (paraphrased) “I don’t think there’s anything you can do that can make you any happier in this life than helping others and changing people’s lives.”
I see parallels between David and John. The world needs more like them.

I meant to thank you for this information earlier, so thanks! Seeing the faces of the children with John, I’m sure that would be very easy to do. Here is another photo Abrra sent to me that John took of some of them.

BTW, the Prayer of the Children video on the top left is a bit long, over 6 minutes, because it does not edit out David’s talking prior to the song about what the various children’s charities mean to him. His voice catches when he says “Invisible Children.”

Hey everybody, its John Torrey writing – I am so honored and moved that “abrra” wrote this piece about our chance encounter on the train, and by all of your comments! She, too, is a very special person, and this seems like a group of very compassionate people, brought together by the good work and mission of David Archuleta. I am very grateful for those of you who have checked out the charity website for IMUMA – both it an UKUN are wonderful organizations doing such amazing work with very little funding. UKUN saves lives, while IMUMA helps make them. Do not be turned off from donating to UKUN because it does not have a website (although I hope to make one this summer, which I will post the link to on this wall) – it provides absolutely essential, lifesaving care to poor people with HIV/AIDS, and Charles, its project coordinator, is one of the most competent, kindest, and most selfless people I know. If any of you were to get in touch with him about contributing, that would be so great! I know there are many good causes to contribute to (Haiti earthquake relief certainly comes to mind right now), but rest assured that these two local organizations are some of the best places money can go.

Abrra, you could have smiled and said “hello” and sat there with your ear buds in or reading, as so many fellow travelers do. But you didn’t. You reached out and opened your heart and made a connection with someone we would have never known about and this young man also was willing to share his heart. Your connection allowed us to make a connection. Thank you Abrra and John. Now it is up to me. Like David said, if we all do a little, we can make a difference. And, as always, thank you to David Archuleta for being the kind of person he is. GZO: Still waiting for my ‘Idol’ obsession
By JAMIE GRAHAM / Lincoln Journal Star | Posted: Thursday, January 21, 2010 3:30 am | 1 Comment
Where is the voice? Four episodes into “American Idol” season nine, and I still haven’t found my David Archuleta. (That’s right, I’m an Archie. Always and forever.) Thirty-one more hopefuls were sent to Hollywood from the Orlando round. Not a one gave me that warm, fuzzy feeling of harmonious joy.

I thought…but that would be perfect for him and I know he would love to be involved. Maybe that’s what the meetings he tweeted of were about. He’s so sly. 😉 If they really want to raise money, they should let David perform Prayer of the Children. The phone lines will light up like the 4th of July! I suppose SF will be posting the prayer tonight since he will be traveling far from home. All David said was that he was packing and couldn’t decide what to pack and wished he could wear the same thing every day. Then he said everyone was saying a simple “Hi” to him and everyone must be in a good mood. Still, he didn’t mention appearing on the Haiti Telethon. I think it’s a little strange since he told us about his pending trip to Central America BEFORE he left. We KNOW he’s involved in the Telethon, we just don’t know if he’ll be in LA (temps high 57, with showers or NY, high 44, sunny). LA makes more sense since his flight was so late. I still don’t get why he didn’t tweet about the Telethon…unless he is not scheduled to perform. Maybe he will man a phone instead!! WOW! Almost as good as performing but not quite. Hope he does both!
He’s in the air, so..
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to always do right by David.
Help us support David so that it’s always in his best interest.
CLOAK DAVID IN YOUR PROTECTIVE ARMS WHILE DOING GOOD AND CHARITABLE WORKS.
Keep David and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen
David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams when you get to your destination. HOPE YOU HAVE A SAFE & ENJOYABLE FLIGHT to wherever you are going.
Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always! TAKE CARE!

David has either arrived at his destination which would be LA, IMO or at a stop-over on his way to NY, but not likely. But who really knows, since he’s still not saying..why is he being so mysterious? Or has it even dawned on him that the inquiring minds want to know?

Oh gosh! Listen to this interview with Jordin Sparks that just got placed on twitter. She was asked what bible verse she has tattooed on her wrist. She said it was her favorite verse that she lives by. Look at the verse Emi chose to put in her article “The Power to Be.” (previous post) below bottom pic of David. hah! They also asked her who she’d like to duet with and she said David.

Well isn’t that something, Emifriend and Jordin same bible verse…didn’t know Jordin had it tattoed though.
The duet might happen during the Super Bowl Experience…what do you think?

hmmmmm….could be. I think their voices would blend very well together on a power ballad. The year Jordin won was my first time to watch AI and I voted for her. Once. I now know that was just a feeble preparation for what was to come. Got me interested in AI enough to watch it again the next year. But I was so NOT prepared for what was to come. You think I voted ONCE the next year? Don’t. make. me. laugh.

So…no performance. I had a feeling those slots were already filled. But you could call in and just hang up and call again till you get David. And you could talk to him and hear him laugh and get him to sing a bit before you pledge.
Just a thought.

IDK, there are a lot of performers and only 2 hours. Maybe a recording of Prayer of the Children on itunes with proceeds to Haiti? Well, lets be like Munkmusic and not give up hope.
I was just kidding about hanging up till you get David. But who knows, you might get lucky. 😉

I’m not sure if Clooney, who organized the telethon, realizes the impact and huge potential of donation calls coming in after or IF David sings POTC. It would be a huge mistake if David does not perform tonight. However, I don’t think David is concerned about it and I sincerely hope his fans DO NOT call, email, tweet or otherwise try to contact the producers or networks with complaints if he does not perform. This venue is not about David, but about what we can do to help David in his quest to help the suffering people of Haiti. That said, I do think it would benefit the telethon greatly if David sings this (or any song for that matter)…
note: The look on David’s beautiful face at the end of this video clearly shows the love and deep compassion for all the children of the world who are suffering and in despair. It’s a heartrending look that pierces my heart…

So true that it’s not about David, we his fans just know the impact it would have if he were able to perform and I hope it happens, but if it doesn’t I’m fine because he is fine.
I know this is the reason why he is in it for…

SF Thank you for that list! David is included in quite a lineup stars! Why do I have visions of hanging up after my pledge and thinking to myself, ‘hmmmm….that voice sounded familiar!’, not realizing that I was just talking to The Voice! As if! I hope that at least one of his fans is lucky enough to get him on the phone.

Djafan, when I saw that photo earlier, I thought the same thing about why David is there and not for any other reason.
What joy the Rescue Workers must have felt! It makes the sacrifices and dangers they face in their line of work worth everything and a feeling money can’t buy. It’s an epic award winning photo which will, I’m sure grace the covers of newspapers & magazines. I hope there will be many more photos like this coming forth, instead of so many photos of death, destruction, hopelessness, helplessness and despair.

The telethon, which starts at 8pm EST, will be broadcast on just about every major network: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, The CW, HBO, MTV, VH1, CMT, PBS, TNT, Showtime, COMEDY CENTRAL, Bravo and E!
Joining seemingly every gigantic celebrity alive–we’re talking George Clooney and Madonna sized celebs–will be former Idol contestants DAVID ARCHULETA, Katharine McPhee, and Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer is scheduled to showcase her Oscar winning pipes during the telethon, while Archie and McPhee are doing their part by answering phones and taking donations. David confirmed this last night via Twitter.”

So very proud of David. I don’t think he would ever ask them if he could sing. I can just hear it now, “I”d love to help in any way I can.”
I saw a tweet from Josh Groban. It seems his fans are wanting to hear him sing tonight as well. He was telling them that there was no room. Here it is – just found it again.
“thanks for asking if I’m singing on the telethon tonight…would have loved to help but there is only so much room. please watch and donate!”
(but I’d still love to hear David belt out POTC or Angels, a capella. the phones would never stop ringing after that)

David looks so happy in the 2 pics we were so very lucky to get (so far). Obviously, this is what he loves.
It is easy to lose faith when something like an earthquake which is called “An Act of God”, destroys and devastates much of a poor country like Haiti. It’s easy to lose faith when whole families are lost, or when children are left homeless & orphaned. It’s easy to lose faith when we can see no rhyme or reason for it. When we are finding it so hard to understand why these catastrophes happen to the groups of people who are already suffering in some way or another, from poverty & hunger to chronic diseases, or government corruption, David in his goodness and good works remind us that with love, compassion and prayers, miracles can & do happen. That from the ashes, there can be a new beginning for the people of Haiti. I pray that God gives them strength and hope and that they will know they are not alone & will not be forgotten.
I choose to call what David and all the other celebrities and everyone else involved in the Telethon, Hope For Haiti, and all the rescue & health workers in Haiti have done and continue to do, as the real “ACT OF GOD”.
Good night. For David, who is selfless & without ego…
Dear lord,
Please take care of David.
Amen
David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always! TAKE CARE!
