The Latino Connection

Posted by djafan on Saturday, November 28, 2009

David Archuleta recently replied to a tweet from me in Spanish.  *insert fan girl scream here*

David’s tweet – Finished an hour and a half of interviews this morning.  Now on the phone with mi madre.

My reply – @David Archie  awwww…mi madre…la mujer mas importante de nuestras vidas.  Que alegria me da de ver como aprecias a tu madre.  (Translation:  aww…my mother…the most important woman in our lives.  What joy I feel to see how much you appreciate your mother.)

David’s reply – @djafans  aw lol gracias!

On December 2, 2009, four generations of Latinas will be attending David’s Christmas concert.  My mother and sister, my daughter, my granddaughter and I.  My father is a musician and loves to sing, so there was always music in our home.  I grew up listening to Latino music:  Mariachi and Ranchera,  sung by great vocalists like Javier Solis, Pedro Infante, and Vicente Fernandez.  These wonderful singers all had a big influence on me, but none became a part of my very DNA until David Archuleta.

2009 ALMA Awards

After I saw him on AI 7, my seven years of watching American Idol came to an end, and my concert going days began.  My mom became worried about my sudden habit of attending concerts to see the same guy sing the same songs.  I tried to explain it to her, and played his videos, but she just didn’t get it.  Then he surprised us with the tease of Como La Flor from his solo concert.  She liked it; she said he was good, but she still didn’t get it.  Then I played it for my husband.

He got it.  He surprised me by declaring that if David were to put out a Spanish album, he would definitely win the hearts of the Latin community.

Enter the ALMA Awards.  I submitted my name at least five hundred times in the drawing to win a spot on the red carpet and won!  He was impeccably dressed and gorgeous!   As he signed my CD, I spoke to him in Spanish.  “Estamos muy orgullosos de ti.”  (Translation: “We’re very proud of you.”)  He replied, “Gracias.”  Then I told him to look up.

Little did we know what was in store for us that night.  David reached deep into his Latin roots and pulled off a performance that will go down in history as one of his best ever, especially for one so young.  Contigo en la Distancia.

I sent that YouTube video to everyone I know who loves Spanish music.  A coworker asked where she could get the CD of that.  I told her nowhere.  She said she needed it.  I made her one with some songs in English too, and put it on her desk.  I asked her the next day if she liked it and she said she had been listening to it non-stop.  Just Contigo though.  She said there was just something different in the way she felt when listening to David sing in Spanish.  Before our conversation was over, she had me in tears.  After hearing it, my brother, who sings in a choir, said that David is a vocal genius and at eighteen has more talent than Groban, Bocelli, Vincente, or Pepe.  He said too, that David stole that song from Luis Miguel.

My father told me that he had not heard anyone sing like that…ever.  He wanted to know if David has any plans to do a Spanish album and I told him he does.  We both agreed that now is a good time.  David has the youth factor on his side and mega talent.  There is Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, and Marc Anthony that have crossed cultures and been very successful.  Alejandro Fernandez and Pepe Aguilar all have huge followings and sell out arenas.  But, we concluded, none of these are in David’s league.

With the release of Christmas From the Heart, a sea change occurred in the rest of my Latino family.  My mom remembered Riu Riu Chiu as a song she sang as a child growing up in a little town in Mexico.

My mom also said she couldn’t believe it, that he was singing Ave Maria the way it was meant to be sung, the way it was sung in church when she was a little girl.  The Latin words came back to her as she sang along.  It was a surreal moment.

She then asked if David would be singing these songs in his Christmas concert.  I said probably and asked if she wanted to go.   To my surprise, she said yes!

And that’s how it happened, that on the 2nd of December four generations of Familia Latina will be experiencing the magic that is David Archuleta.

My father believes the connection to the Latino community and the inevitable passion it will ignite, will be something not seen since Selena.  I believe it has already begun.

djafan – How fortunate you are. I am sure if my mother were alive she too would love David. She was a big fan of those you mentioned. We grew up listening to spanish music in our house as well. The night you all go to see David will be so memorable and always live in your heart and in your soul. You will have gifted to your mom and other family members an incredible gift, “THE VOICE”

I wish I had gone with my gut and gone to CA. from the beginning – oh well.

What a beautiful article, dja. I can really feel the love in it. And how great to have converted your family and friends to David. I don’t have a smidgen of Latino blood in me, but I am as proud of him for his latest accomplishments as anyone could be. I don’t even speak Spanish, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling a very strong emotional tie to David when he sings in this beautiful language. The feelings and emotions in the music that comes from David are all one needs to be swept away to another realm.
He is such a pied piper.

Have so much fun on Dec 2 and tell us all about it–I can’t imagine the 4 generations of love will emanate that night!

    Bravo!
Four generations of David fans in your family! That speaks volumes about David’s appeal to every age! I’ve forever been a fangirl of musicians but have never before come across an artist whose appeal stretches as far as David’s. The combination of his voice and character attracts people to him like a magnet.

As you know, I’m not hispanic nor do I speak espanol but it doesn’t seem to matter when David sings songs like “Contigo En La Distancia” and “Como La Flor” because music is the universal language. David connects with his audience so well that he tells his story and gets his message across with emotions more than with lyrics. That’s why a CD of Spanish songs by David would sell like hotcakes!

It warms my heart that you are going to David’s concert with your mother, sister, daughter and granddaughter. Wishing you all a grand time!

I just love this story. Thank you so much for posting this! You are very blessed to have 4 generations in your family and then for you all to go together to experience a David Archuleta concert…….wow……how great.

How many musical artists can say they brought 4 generations of a family together for a concert each and every one of them will enjoy? Not many would be my guess, if any at all!

Thank you again for this great story! Just love it! 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story about your Latino family. I am Latina and I can so understand and relate to your experiences and feelings! I have been a David fan since AI7 and I follow him wherever and whenever I can. Being that I live in Europe – it makes it difficult. But I too am so proud of this wonderful young man! I love his talent but more so I love the pride he has in being a latino! Thank you for sharing your story!

    Hello everyone.

It’s been a busy week, so I’d first like to say thank you to Angelica. Wow, reading that last thread was like dreaming with your words and emotions reverberating through me.
“…and his voice is in the rain, and it will be in the sun, and the wind, and in everything…” ♥

Djafan, I saw those tweets and could imagine your fan girl reactions. I even felt a little fan girl scream creep out of me. 🙂 And four generations going to see David at one concert must feel fantastic! May I add to all of the requests for a follow-up article about the concert? I’m so happy for you that people in your circles are starting to recognize and appreciate David for his incredible talents. People around me let me speak and “sing” David’s praises, but then they change the subject and it just feels so flat.

THE BAKERSFIELD CONCERT I did get a friend and two of his nieces to go to the Bakersfield concert with me. When they arrived to pick me up, I could barely contain my excitement. They didn’t seem as excited, but were looking forward to it. At the venue while we were waiting for the concert to begin, I noticed that the auditorium was only half full. What? What’s up with that? My friend let me know that he had received another invitation for The Nutcracker for the same day but had to turn it down as he had already accepted my offer. I guess there were many other things going on this day/weekend. David even mentioned the hockey game taking place next door. Music is so subjective that I was now hoping, more than ever, that my friends would enjoy the concert.

They did! During Zero Gravity, we and most of the audience stood, jumped, bounced, and waved their arms in the air. I think David, after having no room to move at Ann Arbor, really let loose. He jumped and ran from one side of the stage to the other and did his famous twirl near the end. My friend commented that he got to see a pirouette any way, LOL! The happiness emanating from David was contagious. And the stage was festive too. During the first half, the colorful lights behind the curtain looked like the lights on my equalizer. They moved and danced to the tune of the music. During the second half, the curtains were drawn open to reveal white Christmas trees and these large Christmas ornaments hanging from the rafters. The lights were shining on these like huge stars in the sky. All of this gorgeous décor was behind and overhead the most amazing focal point on stage. Though the Christmas music was backed by a track somewhat, David made it real and heartfelt. My friend remarked, “He’s got a great voice.”

After the encore, Oh Holy Night, David ran from the left side of the stage to the other, high-fiving everyone in the front row. My friends surprised me by running up toward the stage to get closer. No, we didn’t get close enough, but hopefully there’ll be another chance. My friends did say they’d like to see more. Did I say David’s happiness was contagious. And did you hear that he tweeted about going to the hockey game after the concert? What a guy! The concert was fabulous and one I’ll never forget. But then, I’ve had that feeling after every concert I’ve attended. This one makes five.

    djafan,

Thanks for sharing your inside view of David’s Latino connection with 4 generations of your family. Yes, you will certainly have to tell us all about that concert on the 2nd. Hmmmm…that’s pretty darn soon isn’t it? Excited much?

I really believe David’s connection to the Latino community will, in the words of raelovingangels, “translate to superstardom.” The idea of an entire album of Spanish songs is just too much to wrap my heart around. I don’t understand a word but when he caresses those soft consonants, sigh…………I almost pity those who can understand the language and can only compare it to listening to him moan and wail and riff. If he were to use words there it would diminish so much of the power.

desertratt – thanks for the suggestion about the time. We have tried that with no luck. Still working on the problem and hope to get it fixed soon.

lct – Welcome all the way from Europe! Hope you come often and talk!

Pam05 – Welcome to The Voice! Hope you feel the love here.

That goes for all of you.

djafan, my mom was a fan of all those artists you mention. I have to be honest though and tell you I was never a fan of Mexican/Spanish music. I was into Rock & Roll which are now “The Oldies”. David has made me appreciate how beautiful the Spanish language is set to beautiful music and sung by The Voice, can be.

I also am very grateful I can share my love & admiration with my sister! And I like to think that if my mom were still here, she would also admire The Voice. Not as lucky as you, djafan. My daughter will never be a fan of David’s music, even though she thinks he’s got a great voice.

How wonderful you get to experience David with four generations of beauties in your family. David will be very touched when you tell him!

    Good night, and for David…

    Dear lord,

    Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to always do right by David.
Help us support David so that it’s always in his best interest.
A SPECIAL REQUEST LORD…CLOAK DAVID IN YOUR PROTECTIVE ARMS THROUGHOUT HIS WINTER TOUR, KEEPING DAVID AND HIS VOICE HEALTHY AND STRONG as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen

David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always.

Review of the Santa Rosa concert:

An Archuleta concert is all about “the voice”
    by pinella

David Archuleta Sunday (Nov. 29, 2009) at the Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa, Ca.
Concerts have a certain sameness to them – merchandise table, slightly late start, opening act you wish would hurry up, grand entrance of the main act. You know the routine.

Then comes the star of the show and one of two things occur after the obligatory 90 minute performance – you soon forget the act on the way home or you don’t.

    You don’t forget David Archuleta.

    Why?

    Pretty simple – his voice.

Although as one of the judges on American Idol proclaimed two seasons ago when Archuleta finished second – “David, you could sing the phone book” – his 90-minute, one encore show Sunday night at the Wells Fargo Center was anything but songs from the Yellow Pages.

Dubbed David Archuleta’s “Christmas from the Heart” tour, it was really a combination of about half pretty pure pop Archuleta and half Christmas.

The venue wasn’t full, but it was close; the crowd wasn’t all screaming teenage girls, but it was close; and the songs weren’t all perfect, but they were close.

If you came just to hear for yourself if what you were hearing on Idol was real, well you found out – yes, and moreso.

At times, it was hard to fathom that you were listening to an 18-year old kid from Utah because the voice is something most singers take years to cultivate. And although he has been at this singing gig for much of his young life, the voice is still natural.

They just don’t teach what Archuleta projects.

The first half of the show hit a peak with Zero Gravity and then Crush. The latter being his first mega-hit off his initial self-titled album.

Archuleta and his four-piece band took a mini-break to change clothes, alter the stage and change the mood to the holidays.

“It just seems so odd that we are really into the holidays now,” Archuleta said. “I’ve been working on this album for six months and now it’s finally here.”

He sang eight Christmas songs and if ever there was a voice holiday-appropriate it is Archuleta’s. Every song he did just seemed to get better.
Ave Maria sung in Spanish was then topped by a song in French – Pat-A-Pan. Then he went back to Spanish and a song titled Riu Riu Chiu, then Silent Night and finally an encore of O Holy Night.

He wasn’t perfect. Someone on Idol had given him the advice to not close his eyes while he sings, but he did that often. And his connection to the audience between songs was a bit scattered.

But who came to see his eyes or listen to him speak words of wisdom?

We came to hear the voice. And, oh, my, did we.

    http://idol.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/10612/an-archuleta-concert-is-all-about-the-voice/

THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!! IT’S ALL ABOUT THE VOICE. But we already knew that, didn’t we? 😉

Haha! The same guy just posted another review, this time about David’s fans.

Not quite ready for Archuleta’s fanatics
    by pinella

David Archuleta performs at the Wells Fargo Center in Santa Rosa on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009
This scene should have been expected but I must admit there was some shock to it.

If you have ever been to the beach and witnessed a bunch of sandpipers walking near the water and then seen how they scurry off in a pack when someone approaches … well, you kinda get the picture.

The opening act – Benton Paul – for David Archuleta had finished and he was out in the lobby signing autographs for a line of fans that had snaked its way around for about 250 feet. That line was composed almost entirely of teenaged females.

At about 7:55 p.m. the lobby lights flickered a couple of times indicating that the main event would commence shortly. Well, the sandpipers took off. They were orderly, but my oh my did they scurry.

During Archuleta’s performance the screeching was deafening at times. I was around when the Beatles emerged on the scene, but I only saw that love-fest on television, never in person. Of course, those Beatle throngs were much larger than Sunday night when about 3,000 Archie fans showed up. But I doubt that the Beatles’ followers were any more passionate.

The crowd was an interesting demographic – 95 percent teens; 5 percent boomer. Not much of anything in-between and very little diversity.

Maybe the most interesting scene was while Archuleta was in full jumping about on-stage mode, there was a gray-haired gentleman standing in the midst of a pack of teenagers rocking away to “Crush.”

    Good for him.

    Hi Angelica,

Nice review. What’s interesting is that the tweeters were tweeting that the audience was so diverse, opposite perceptions. Maybe because the teens are loudest that’s what he noticed.

My sister n law attended her first David concert in Bakersfield. She called me during the concert and cellcasted a few songs for my listening pleasure and also soon after the concert. Words out of her mouth….fresh, penetrating eyes, genuine, honest, the voice, great concert… maybe VIP next time….

lct!! Thanks for such kind words. This is a very new site and we so appreciate it when people let us know how they feel about it. We really welcome everyone’s input on what you would like in a fan site. Because David has made so many of us feel emotions so deeply, I’d like to follow his lead and do something like that with this site as well. Mostly laughs, but a few tears too.

I put the slide show up late last night and closed it for comments cause I didn’t know if I’d be opening up a can of worms. haha. I’m gonna open up that can of worms and ask everyone to RESPECTFULLY fangirl, thud, and sigh. Any comments deemed disrespectful will be deleted. The slide show will be changed everyday so as not to cause any of you to get bored. lol. As if.

I enjoyed your story about your family and how they are connected to music. It’s a natural progression that they would come around about David’s music. Sometimes it take just one song to change peoples hearts and minds about an artist. David reached them with his Spanish songs! Loved that the men appreciate him. Sometimes the men are the hardest to allow themselves to feel the message.

I viewed some of the videos from Santa Rosa. He was fantastic, however he looked very tired. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it. I guess it’s because his fatigue has not affected his performances. In fact, he just looks kind of dreamy…Thank God he has a day off tomorrow and I sincerely hope he uses it for complete physical & vocal rest, but that’s just wishful thinking on my part…

I just happened to tune into the re-showing of Oprah’s Christmas show. Mary J.Blige & Bocelli’s rendition of WCIT doesn’t hold a candle to David’s. Oprah was falling all over herself, praising their performance. But has she EVER listened to David? What is with her anyway? I just do not get it.

Apparently Bill Pinella of The Press Democrat/Idol Chatter wrote in his review that David sang “Ave Maria” in Spanish. Several of David’s fans wrote in to correct him that it wasn’t Spanish; it was Latin. Hence his newest comment:

“To several of you “Archies” out there who commented that David Archuleta sang Ave Maria in Latin Sunday night and not Spanish as was noted here, I can only say that my high school Latin teacher when I was a freshman would be stunned at that error.

And I say to you: “Mea culpa.” I wonder how one would say: “You go, David!” in Latin?”

haha Mr. Pinella is a fan!

Tell me, why do I love this so much?

David Archuleta is the first artist to customize a XMAS singing game for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Sing along to all your favorite holiday songs including “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” “O Come All Ye Faithful” “Joy To The World” “The First Noel” & “Silent Night.”

The game lets you select one of four difficulty levels to challenge your pitch and rhythm accuracy. You can post your scores to the leader board and see how you measure up. There’s also a special exclusive video tutorial with David giving singing tips.

Well, here’s the good news and the bad news for David Archuleta on his first visit to Santa Rosa.

My people tell me he found a lovely Mormon place of worship Sunday morning. That’s the good news.

    The bad news?

He was recognized by the youngsters in the congregation and he had to hustle out another exit to avoid the crowd.

    Welcome to Sonoma County, David!”

Angelica, thanks for The Riddle vid … I had the unique pleasure of hearing that song for the FIRST time in Ann Arbor. Computer “issues” at home meant that I couldn’t watch the SLC vids and now I’m so glad for that. Hearing a brand new song from DAvid live … esp. THAT one … Oh. My. Heck. no words.

I wasn’t familiar with The Riddle until David sang it in SLC so I was surprised in Ann Arbor that my daughter knew the song, in fact she was swaying in her seat. She listens to a local station here in Hamilton which often plays that song by Five For Fighting. She thought David did a ‘really good job’. I’d say she’s becoming a fan.

Angelica, Thanks for the audio of the Riddle from Ann Arbor. I have not recovered from the experience of sitting at the third row right in front of his mic and hearing David — showing so much emotion in his face — singing these words “… We are smaller than small. In the scheme of things, well we’re nothing at all…When you get right down to the reason for the world…WHO AM I…”
Before he sang the song, he said something like the song is about why we are here on this earth at all. This being a Christmas concert, I expected to hear beautiful Christmas songs but have not expected to hear him sing an “existential” song like this. I have not been the same since…

Just my humble opinion – so don’t throw tomatoes. BUT, I wish who ever made out Davids concert schedule had to sing the some of the very demanding songs that he does, many nights in a row. He sure isn’t getting much vocal rest. I mean four in a row, with interviews too. As much as we love to hear OHN and Ave Maria, they have a lot of demanding power and high notes that I’m sure are taxing on his voice. I wish he would alternate songs and leave those two out of some shows–he has a lot of beautiful songs to chose from that would be easier on him.

Because his voice does get tired and strained, he can’t perform these songs to his capabilities or makes booboos in them, he is leaving himself wide open to the critics , who so dearly love to find any little fault they can with David.

I so much dearly love this young man, I don’t want to see him hurt over something that could be rectified. I think he has several more times he has many shows in a row. Egad!!

I have to say I agree with you 100%. When I read that he would be singing Ave Maria at each show, I made an audible gasp. We know that he spent 5 1/2 hours getting the song perfect for the CD and he has said it is a very difficult song to sing. Now, very early in the tour he is tweeting that his “voice is shot.” Knowing David, he will continue to soldier on, but I worry about his voice holding up under the demand.

Have an absolutely radiant time tomorrow surrounded by the love of your family and the voice. We will be thinking of you and eagerly waiting to hear all about it when you return.

And everyone else going to a concert, please tell us about it, how you felt, what you saw, who you met, how he sounded..etc. There are many people in the Southern US and around the world who will not get a chance to attend a Christmas concert. So in the spirit of the season, share this gift with others. And remember the motto of this site, “Don’t worry about being eloquent or articulate. If you speak with sincerity and passion, you speak with the tongue of angels.”
