Y’all Ready for This? ~ The Wait is Almost Over!

Posted by Angelica on Monday, September 12, 2011

@StevenJRob: Just finished rehearsal with the boss! Y’all ready for this?!!!! :-) :-)

Well are y’all?? Since many of us are driving or flying out on Friday, we have a launch window or just T-minus 4 days! I have officially entered spazz mode. This will be the final update post until the weekend so… excuse me for a moment, won’t you?

SPPAAAAAAZZZZZZZZINNNNNGGG!!!!!

Ah…that feels better. Where was I? Oh yeah. One more update post till we leave.

*Performance Time*

There have been published accounts of a 40 minute set but received this email from Djafan 9/10/11. “I heard back from Barbara and the performance time is 50 mins. If we make lots of noise we might get him back out.”

*Gifts*

The time is too far spent to email or send SweetonDA any cards or gifts. We are asking anyone who will be coming to please bring your cards/gifts to the restaurant for lunch or to the venue for placing in his bag.

*His Bag*

Here is a pic of the hockey bag SandyBeaches’s husband bought for David along with her description. “The sports bag is 31 inches long and much more deep than it looks, about 14 inches and expands, with different pockets that you can’t see and sporty features. There is room in an outside pocket for cards. Altogether it will take hundreds of cards. The outside will have an American flag and a Canadian tag, or something along that line.”

*His Flowers*

Two bouquets will be purchased…one from the fans who could not attend and one from those attending. SweetonDA has received enough from the fans not attending to purchase a lovely bouquet from them to him. Like I said, we will be collecting small, voluntary donations from those attending at the restaurant or venue. If there is any money left over, we will be getting an Edible Bouquet too from a place there in Gilbert. With Mangoes!!

*Wristbands*

They have all been mailed. If you are going, please email Djafan at thevoiceda@gmailcom and she will send you the time and place where you can get with her to buy one on Friday. She has to turn the remainder in to Barbara Stowell Saturday morning to be sold at the gate to the general public.

*Bracelets!*

SandyBeaches has generously purchased awesome silicone bracelets for gifting to everyone going to the event! Anyone who has a wristband will receive a bracelet, shown below. She has ordered a nice variety of sizes too, not just one size fits all. If you are not going, send her one American dollar to cover Canadian postage which you can not buy here. To get her address, email her at thevoiceschat@yahoo.ca Be sure to tell her what size you want: 7, 71/2 or 8.

*Lunch at Pei Wei Asian Diner*

We need to meet up in order to give out the bracelets and just to meet and eat! Please come to Pei Wei at 11:00 am and we will talk, chow in 5 languages and collect donations for flowers from anyone who wants to contribute. We will also accept any cards or gifts you want given to him. If you’d rather eat elsewhere, you can just come there and get your bracelet or we will give it to you at the venue, not a problem. If you have a wristband you will get a bracelet. No one will be allowed in the gates until 5:30 pm, so I hope we can spend some time shopping and enjoying the day!

Address of Pei Wei is 1084 S Gilbert Suite 601 Gilbert, AZ  85296. They do not take reservations and we have no idea how many will be joining us for lunch there anyway, so we will just invade the place and take possession.

Here is the link to Pei Wei with menu and prices and visual of its proximity to Civic Center/Town Square.

So, I guess that’s about it. Can’t wait to meet up with everyone going! Can’t wait to hear the Voice live again! Yes, Steven, we are so ready! For those not going, please know that we will be sending a ton of tweets, texts, pics and vids as soon as possible! Lots of awesome photographers and videographers attending!

Did you notice this post is all in red, white and blue? It’s a celebration of the US Constitution. Let’s represent!

You think there’s any chance?

Nah.

More Updates ~ David Archuleta Lands in Arizona Soon!

Posted by Angelica on Wednesday, September 7, 2011

*Performance Time*

Hi all,

I heard back from Barbara and the performance time is 50 mins.  If we make lots of noise we might get him back out :)   Djafan 9/10/11

*Gifts*

For the Gilbert, AZ event on September 17, SweetonDA will be accepting letters, cards, donation envelopes and gifts for David. Please keep packages small and no larger than a shirt box or large packing envelope. To get her mailing address, email her at

sweetonda@gmail.com

*Flowers*

Two bouquets for sure will be purchased…one from the fans who could not attend and one from those attending. If you are not attending and would like to contribute to flowers, contact SweetonDA at her email above. Indicate that you would like the donation to go for flowers. For the other bouquet, those attending will be shaken down on the spot. We are only talking 1 to 5 dollars. See links for florists in the town of Gilbert in the thread below if you are interested in making your own purchase. Bouquets should be brought to venue and hopefully we can get them to him after his set, along with the cards, gifts, etc; sent to SweetonDA or brought by those attending. One large bag should do it. SandyBeaches is bringing a Canadian Hockey bag. I have no idea what that is but it sounds really cool…and manly. Bringing her comment from thread posted 9/6/11 here: “Tonight I went shopping with my husband and we found the “Sports Bag” to fill with cards and whatever else that we have for David. It can be used for sports or for travel. You can carry it in different ways and there are hidden wheels for the airport! Let’s fill it!”  ♥♥♥

*Wristbands*

They have all been mailed. If you are going, you can get with Djafan by her real name at the Legado Hotel Friday night or at the venue before they are gone. She has to turn the remainder in to Barbara Stowell Saturday morning to be sold at the gate to the general public.

*Bracelets!*

SandyBeaches has generously purchased uber-awesome silicone bracelets for gifting to everyone going to the event! Anyone who has a wristband will receive a bracelet, shown below. Thank you SandyBeaches! Muwaah! A truer statement could not be worn. She has ordered a nice variety of sizes too, not just one size fits all. If you are not going, send her one American dollah to cover Canadian postage which you can not buy here. To get her address, email her at thevoiceschat@yahoo.ca Be sure to tell her what size you want: 7, 71/2 or 8.

*Meet and Eat*

We need to meet up in order to give out the bracelets. We will collect donations for flowers there from anyone who wants to contribute (totally optional). If you’d rather eat elsewhere, you can just come there and get your bracelet or we will give it to you at the venue, not a problem. If you have a wristband you will get a bracelet so find SandyBeaches. If you can’t find SandyBeaches, look for Silverfox. No one will be allowed in the gates until 5:30 pm, so I hope we can spend some time shopping and enjoying the day.  :)

So, after extensive research and using the latest in satellite imagery, “like a satellite we’re flyyyiiiyin..” have decided with a little help from my friends on Pei Wei Asian Diner. (Pronounced Pay Way.) We will meet below at 11:00 am Saturday.

Here is the link to Pei Wei with menu and prices.

Location, location, location. It’s located in the Town Square really close to the Civic Center where the Constitution Fair will be held. So folks who came by plane and are without a car, when you get to Pei Wei, you are at the venue! Like I say, you don’t have to eat there if you don’t want, but we’d like to meet and get acquainted/reacquainted before the concert. I believe on the far end about a block away is Chipolte’s Grill and there are some other restaurants in the area too.

You can see how close we will be to the venue from these satellite photos.

The above circular space could be where the concert will be held or may be some sort of heliport or landing area for a space craft. We always suspected he was not of this world. ;)

That’s all for now. Ciao!

David Archuleta in Arizona ~ T Minus 12 Days and Counting!

Posted by Angelica on Sunday, September 4, 2011

May I have your attention please!!

Constitution Fair Site

Word. It is going to be very hot in Arizona (average temp this time of year 103 degrees). So please dress cool and wear red, white and blue.  The most important thing is to be comfortable in the heat. Dress code is optional. You have to dress, but the colors I mean. Por favor don’t make him have to get after you with his sharpie. Now. Time is growing very short and we have a few updates to post and discuss. I hit publish last night and then took it down to work out some fine details. Sorry for the confusion. Oh, BTW…

*Update for Gifting*

For the Gilbert, AZ event on September 17, SweetonDA will be accepting letters, cards, donation envelopes and gifts for David. Please keep packages small and no larger than a shirt box or large packing envelope. To get her mailing address, email her at

sweetonda@gmail.com

*Wristband Update*

Over a hundred wristbands have been mailed out by Djafan. She has extended the time for ordering to the 6th which gives the mail 8 days to get back to you.  Any left will be sold at the gate by the venue for fans who want to donate and get reserved seating but didn’t hear about it online. Some wristbands have been generously purchased for gifting. Thank you to you know who you all are! See me about that. I will be wearing a red hat. Or possibly a straw colored hat with red, white and blue scarves tied on. I can’t decide.  :?

*Update – We are getting Bracelets!*

:)   I will let her post more on this in comments.

*Flower Power*

Two bouquets for sure will be purchased…one from the fans who could not attend and one from those attending. If you are not attending and would like to contribute to flowers, send a small donation to SweetonDA at her email above. Indicate that you would like the donation to go for flowers. For the other bouquet, those attending will be shaken down on the spot.  ;)   We are only talking 1 to 5 dollars. Leftover money will go toward possibly having an Edible Bouquet (which would melt in the heat) delivered to his hotel room. <<<<This last would be delivered via event coordinators for obvious reasons. Here are some links for florists in the town of Gilbert if you are interested in making your own purchase. Bouquets should be brought to venue and hopefully we can get them to him after his set, along with the cards, small gifts, etc; sent to SweetonDA or brought by those attending. One large bag should do it. SandyBeaches is bringing a Canadian Hockey bag. I have no idea what that is but it sounds really cool…and manly. A little aside inside note..Djafan said Barbara Stowell (event coordinator extraordinaire and super nice lady) was surprised that we actually wanted to GIVE him stuff!  BAHAHHAAAAAA!!!  smh.

Lena’s
Country Blossom
Karen’s

*Meet and Eat*

We need to meet up in order to give out the bracelets and take up donations for flowers. Donations are optional. Lots of options in this post! “Free your mind.” lol. At 11:00 am Saturday (at someplace yet to be determined) we need to meet and get reacquainted cause that’s half the fun of a David event, riiight? ♥ No one will be allowed in the gates until 5:30 pm, so I hope we can spend some time shopping and enjoying the day. :) I will let you know where we are meeting for lunch asap. I have talked to 4 places so far and will narrow it down to one in a day or two and post that info here.

Getting so excited! Can’t wait to see everyone and of course, see and hear the Voice again! That is the one thing about this trip that is NOT optional. Da man is mandatory! Feels like the 12 days of Christmas! *Goes to listen to Glad Christmas Tidings* :)

How Much David Archuleta is Enough?

Posted by Abrra on Monday, August 29, 2011

I was reflecting on the recent twitter explosion when David’s account was compromised. Words were said that threw the twitter fans into disbelief. Sometimes a celebrity’s online identity is “stolen”, with  resulting fallout that can expose them to losing fans. There is a phrase: “the power of the printed word” that  rings true in this case where some fans fell for the hoax. Does reading it make it so? Much was made of the fact that there were three separate sources that were sending “David’s” tweets. A hacker was exposed! The true David Archuleta came back after adjusting his password. The fan world was at peace again!

As I read the drama unfolding on twitter, a question came to mind.

How much David is enough?

We all have are own answer. In a manner of speaking, we all have are own relationship with David, the artist. I put this question to some fan friends to see what kind of responses I would get. I simply asked the question without explanation. I wanted to see how we are alike or different after three years of history with our favorite singer.I was interested in understanding what boundaries they would set on their relationship as a fan.

Let me share with you the replies.

¶”I think there is something in every fan, a natural  curiosity in us, that wants to know everything! but there is such a thing as too much information.”

¶”For me, I could never get enough of his music, never. I love and respect him enough that i am fine not knowing any personal stuff.”

¶”I haven’t gotten nearly enough of him performing live and I want to shake his hand and meet him face to face’

¶”He is like part of my family now, because i have integrated him into my daily life.

¶”In our “fan-tasy” world, no amount of David is ever enough. We would love to watch his every move and know his every thought, at any given moment. However, he is a human being not just an object of our fascination.  He has a life to live and his  purpose in life is not to amuse or entertain us. Therefore, although I check Twitter diligently in the hopes of catching any morsel of news, story, sighting, however minor, of  him, I am fully aware that every tweet, vlog, off-stage fan-picture, is icing on the cake and a gift to us. For me, I truly just want him to put out as much as music as his heart desires; as fans we are entitled to anything more.”

¶”When I know I can get as much David as I want, I am more content and maybe need him less. As far as a concert goes, I would go see him in a heartbeat, anytime he comes near.I still want to read about him every day, still want to listen to him every day. So if I can do that, and maybe see him a couple times a year, that would be enough.”

¶”I think David and his messages, meant to come through his voice, is needed so badly in this world right now. He is meant to do great things.Of this, I am certain. So how much David is enough? There can never be enough.Never. “

My take on this topic is that while I hope to have David and his music in my life to my last breath, I know that some things in his life could change that could either remove David from the music scene, or cause him to be less available to perform. Would my role as a fan change? Not really. I respect that any such decision made by him would be well vetted.

As long as he wants to make music, write songs or endorse charities, I am there. Whatever the future holds or decision he makes for himself, I will be a fan. If he needs to take time away for personal matters, I will understand. Judging from what he has said over the years, music is something he plans to continue doing as a career. Life can get complicated at times, but keeping your eye on the prize is what matters most.

His role as an artist is just one part of who he is. It is the public part of his life that we fans have shared with him. Being overly invested in his success as an artist could lead to  heavy disappointment for some. David operates on his own time schedule. At times this seems slower then we like. In the past 6 months, events have settled into a calmer routine. There are stretches of time that appear to those not inside his inner circle that he is taking a break. We find out later that he has re-recorded his CD with bonus tracks and planned a tour to Asia! He is busy even when we think otherwise. I trust that he can find the right balance in songwriting, performing and touring to maintain himself in the business.

Fame comes with a price, a Catch-22 of sorts. To be a successful singer you must to give up your anonymity and with that comes a certain loss of privacy.  David has done exceptionally well at preserving his privacy. He tells us just enough to allow us to feel a connection to him beyond his celebrity. I am content knowing just enough to keep me interested in who he is as a person as well as an artist

Whatever David wants to share with me as a fan, is enough David for me.

David Archuleta ~ Grace Under Pressure & Arizona

Posted by paulafod on Monday, August 22, 2011

I have heard of Type A personalities and Type B personalities, extroverts and introverts, the Myers Briggs personality test, the four temperaments theory, and tests that tell me I’m a turtle. Actually, I’m a turtle-monkey, at least according to one test that I took. I don’t have any real theories of what type personality I may be, or if one is better than another, but I once heard someone ask the question “What do you get when you squeeze an orange?” The correct answer: Whatever is in an orange is what will come out of it when pressure is applied.

I came to think about what I am like under pressure last week. As usual, I was pretty hard on myself, always thinking I could do more, I could have done better, that I have so much to do and I don’t want to let anyone down. I feel as though I have been AWOL from The Voice and from other fan sites and people who have become very special to me. My responsibilities at work, at church, in artwork commissions, with family responsibilities and deadlines all put pressure on me but in fact, no one puts as much pressure on me as I put on myself.  This has not made me unhappy, just reflective.  Life under pressure is normal and life under pressure reveals what is inside a person.  Whatever is in me is what comes out when pressure is applied.

David is amazing under pressure. I cannot begin to fathom what it is like to have 729,938 people (at this writing) hang on your every tweet.  He was thrown from a quiet existence in Murray, Utah into a world of decisions and expectations at the age of 16, and at the ripe old age of 17, he was signed into the business world of music. He carries a lot of weight on his shoulders, because, as he said in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, many of his decisions affect a lot of people.  He refuses to take his family or his faith for granted regardless of  the pressure for him to do so. One radio interview (not worthy of recognition) tested David’s integrity in every way, but he never allowed someone else’s behavior to determine his own. He handled it with dignity and grace and I was so proud of that young man! I was also “madder than a wet hen” (as we say in the south), but I decided to follow David’s example and let it go.

David has the generosity of heart to always see the worth of a person, to respect people for who they are without changing who he is. He never seems to harbor a grudge or carry the weight of anger. He cares about people. All of these amazing qualities come through that smile of his.

Occasionally, we get a glimpse into the fact that he feels the pressure like when he tweeted this face :/ when he was running late, or when we see the sleepy David trying to answer questions during an interview. “Who I Am” from TOSOD allowed us to see the side of David that feels the pressure. He may or may not have known about the upcoming release of Jive and management when he wrote this it, but the song was prophetic and gave us a glimpse of the traits I love about him. He has a quiet confidence in who he is, yet he knows he still has a lot to learn. He is grounded, yet capable of flying. Fresh from his tour in Asia, a huge undertaking, we witnessed again by tweets, videos and fan accounts, the way he handled the pressure of schedules, expectations, responsibilities and fan frenzy with astonishing composure.

I know it sounds as though I have put David on a pedestal. I haven’t really. I know he is not perfect nor do I expect him to be. I am grateful for him, for the truths that he has reminded me of, for the people he has brought into my life, and even for the pressure that being a fan has placed in my own life.  Some people don’t understand…and I’m OK with that.

Thank you David Archuleta, for staying true to who you are, even under pressure. You have been an inspiration and an encouragement to all of us who stand behind you as fans. Thank you for reminding me to say hello or good morning to at least five people with the same enthusiasm as when singing in front of thousands while on tour in Asia. Thank you for being willing to take on the pressure of sharing yourself in a skeptical world. Wherever there is pressure, there is grace. We’re ready for the next step….when you are.

I Remember When ~ Three Stages of David Archuleta

Posted by SandyBeaches on Monday, August 8, 2011

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

~ Arthur Schopenhauer

I have a story for you in three parts. I have just come to realize that there are three stages that David has stood on that have made his career spectacular. The first was a time that I would remember as a landmark before he left to fulfill his dreams. It was a stage in which 84,000 people in the audiences along with directors, conductors, the Tabernacle Choir, family, friends and fans witnessed the introduction of the most beloved voice. A voice soon to be heard and felt more intently on the American continent and around the world. That stage has a special place in my memory as being the stage that confirmed to him who he could be, and it was one of the proudest moments that I would ever remember.

Months went by, and then one day I realized stage two delivered itself in the song “Crazy,” an amazing story of someone who had stepped back and taken a long, methodical look at the oftentimes controversial world of music. The lyrics of the song and the emotions that were introduced for the first time are telltale that the story is about him.

The crowd was anxious for David to sing to them the night of the Idol After Party. While he was preparing to sing, “Alright, let it go!” was called out excitedly by a fellow in the audience and captured on video. The song “Crazy” is the most divulging of songs bearing the brunt of emotions that enabled him to sing it so magnificently. This may very well be his ultimate song that became a turning point.

The words with his expressions, tell us everything that we wanted to know about him months before. So now let me tell you quite possibly the story that unfolded.

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space

A simple walk on a California beach with the warm sun on his face and wind at his back could have opened his mind to absolute clarity. It was a time that let him give up everything that was steering him in the direction he did not want to go in and directing him to where his heart wanted to take him.

And when you’re out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just knew too much

What a wonderful feeling that he must have had to be giving up the concerns that tormented him for so long. The Albatross was gone.

The third stage has been empowering for him, with his fears subsiding and shyness all but gone.  “Heaven” took us by storm and left us in awe with a bounty of emotions. The songs themselves are a progression by stages: of realizing who he is, of taking command of himself and now, with this final stage, allowing him to perform with absolute perfection. With his hand oftentimes reaching outwards, his grasp extends beyond the audience to touch Heaven itself.

From the very first word of the song his spirit soars with full intent. He has scaled a lofty summit toward his goals. You can see it in his eyes. We feel it in our hearts. He comes face to face with the One and everyone, who has loved him and stood beside him, giving him all the trust and courage he has ever wanted or needed.

David, from your fans everywhere, bravo and thank you!

David Archuleta Finishes Off Asia with Malaysia

Remember Malaysia? Yeah, somehow I just can’t let go of that concert. It was April 2009 and I almost started smoking again.

Speaking of smoking, how fitting that his autograph signing this morning (for us) will be held at a place called Fahrenheit?

I predict temperatures in the upper hawt regions in the tropics of Malaysia for the next couple of days. Precautions should be ignored. Why bother? He ain’t even trying, folks. That’s what makes it so maddening. And irresistible. Face it, he’s our toast and we’re jam.

Speaking of jam, he will be jamming out, not at the Sunway Lagoon Resort Park for 5,000 fans, oh no, but HERE, at Negara Stadium to a vast multitude of jam…uh fans. At least there will be air-conditioning this time.

Get ready Malaysia cause… ♫ we’re having a heat waaaave, a tropical heat wave, the temperature’s rising, it isn’t surprising, he certainly can…can.  ♫ On second thought maybe we’re toast and he’s jam? However you serve it, this breakfast has gone “Continental” and you know that always leaves you wanting more!

On the menu this morning, his arrival in Malaysia! Watch here.

Tomorrow’s concert will be served here.

Alternate dining here.

Dinner at 8. (am for us) Dress: casual.

BON APPETIT!

David Archuleta and The Keys to Longevity

Posted by bebereader on Friday, July 8, 2011

The unguarded truth is that very few artists deserve fame. Very few have the ability and the vision to impact society for years to come.  The way the Beatles have. The way Elton John has. The way Michael Jackson has. Very few have that magical brilliance that will make a difference in people’s lives the way David Archuleta already has.

After David sang “Falling Stars”, the Good Things Utah co-host asked if he even understood ‘the extraordinary gift and talent’ that he is. Talent helps but unfortunately, it isn’t a prerequisite for success in the music business as evidenced by some of the artists out there today. Talent alone does not assure longevity. With clever marketing, a savvy promoter can mold mediocre talent into success. If talent alone does not assure a solid career, what does help build one? Does longevity in the music business only mean making music that tops the charts or is it something of exceedingly greater worth?

The above artists have been around for decades. Their careers have stood the test of time. What has sustained their careers? Is there something similar about all of them that made their careers endure? Most have been inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame and/or The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Paul McCartney is the most commercially successful songwriter in the history of  popular music, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.  He also has the most successful solo career because his music is VERSATILE. His songs range from pop to rock to jazz to pop rock. He is in his sixties and still remains current. He is responsible for 32 #1 singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. He has composed film scores, classical and electronic music and released a large catalog of songs as a solo artist.

Versatile

Elton John‘s music encompasses every genre including rock, pop, blues and classical.  His POWERHOUSE SONGS and PHENOMENAL PIANO PLAYING make his live shows huge crowd pleasers. His career has spanned for four decades and he has sold more than 250 million records making him one of the most successful artists of all time. He has had more than 50 top 40 hits, won six Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Tony Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked him Number 49 on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

Powerhouse songs and mad piano skills

Madonna is known as the world’s top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records.  She became popular because she PUSHED THE BOUNDARIES of lyrics in pop music. She had many number 1 hits including “Like a Virgin” and “Like a Prayer”, sold 300 million records and is continually REINVENTING HERSELF AND HER IMAGE.

Pushed the boundaries of pop music and reinvented her image

Michael Jackson was extremely talented and a recording artist/singer/songwriter/dancer/musician and philanthropist. He is known as the most successful entertainer of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records. His career spanned four decades as he made CONTRIBUTIONS TO MUSIC AND DANCE. The videos for “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and “Thriller”, helped make MTV famous. He popularized the dance step, the “MOONWALK”. His album “Thriller” is the best-selling album of all time. He won 13 Grammy Awards and  26 American Music Awards. He had 13 #1 singles in the U.S. and sold over 750 million records. He PERSEVERED despite being publicly scorned for his personal life.

Perseverance, contributions to pop culture with dynamic music videos and innovative dance moves

Sting was the bass player/songwriter and lead singer of the rock band, The Police. The band broke up in the eighties but Sting PERSEVERED by being the only band member to continue on with a solo career. He still remains current as a musician, activist and philanthropist. His VARIED STYLE, which incorporates jazz, reggae, classical and new age music won him 16 Grammy Awards.

Perseverance and varied style

Carole King is a brilliant singer/songwriter and a legend. In the sixties and seventies she WROTE  SONGS FOR OTHERS TO SING, songs that became hits for many including Aretha Franklin. Her album “Tapestry”, released in the early seventies and on U.S. album charts for over six years, marked the beginning of her solo career and produced huge hits. In 2000, Billboard named her the most successful female songwriter for five decades because she wrote or co-wrote 118 pop hits. She won four Grammy Awards.

Wrote numerous songs that became hits for other artists

Bruce Springsteen is known for his heartland rock songs and songs about the struggles of daily life. His songs are completely ORIGINAL.  He has sold more than 65 million albums in the US alone and garnered 20 Grammy Awards and two Golden Globes.

Originality

Bob Dylan, one of the most influential rock artists of all time, is known for his songwriting more than his voice. Writing songs since the early sixties, he‘s most well-known for “Like a Rolling Stone”. In the sixties, radio stations would not play songs over 3 minutes long. Bob Dylan TOOK A RISK and made the song six minutes because anything less wouldn’t tell the story. He PUSHED HIMSELF WAY OVER THE LIMITS and got the radio stations to play the song.

Took risks and pushed way over the limits

John Lennon – The other half of the Lennon and McCartney songwriting team, John Lennon WASN’T AFRAID OF TAKING RISKS with his songwriting and used freedom of speech to write songs like “Imagine”. His other songs are about love and hard times. An icon for the last 40 years, even after his death his songs live on.

Wasn’t afraid of taking risks

Billy Joel, singer/songwriter/pianist/composer. Since his first big hit “Piano Man” in 1973, he’s had top 40 hits in the seventies, eighties and nineties, amounting to 33 top 40 hits in the United States, ALL OF WHICH HE WROTE HIMSELF. He won six Grammy Awards, and sold over 150 million records worldwide. He remains current and continues to tour.

Wrote all his own material

These artists did not get to where they are today in a hurry. It took decades of hard work, staying creative and taking leaps of faith. They continued to evolve by pacing themselves, staying true to who they are, trusting their instincts, persevering and by not rushing for the hit. They took risks in their songwriting and performances and stayed original and versatile.

It’s still very early in David’s career but he’s already showing some of the tendencies of the above artists. He took a huge risk by walking away from a demanding major label to try to find his own sound with his own vision. One might say that he is reinventing himself. In a short time, we’ve seen changes in his performances that lean toward his goal of becoming the artist he envisions. He is owning the stage. He is relaxed and in charge. He shows the sensuality of someone twice his age, one of his trademarks. Some say that since David is twenty, he should shift his focus to more mature songs instead of continuing to sing pop songs. But David is versatile. He has demonstrated that he can sing all genres from pop to rock to R&B to ballads to Christmas music and more.  His repertoire in one show can consist of mature songs like “Blackbird” and “Everybody Wants to Rule The World”, to a pop song like “Crush”. David’s voice is unique; it is original. When I turn on the radio, if I’m not familiar with the song, the generic raspy rock sounding voice I hear could be a number of different artists including  Nickelback, David Cook, Lee DeWyze or several others. How many other artists sound like David? I cannot even name one.

David wants to discover his own sound, away from the pressures of anyone telling him how he should sound. He wants to further develop his songwriting skills. It doesn’t matter if David writes it or if someone writes it for him. My hope is that he has good material to sing. My hope is that he gets a smash hit that will enable the rest of the world to hear and comprehend his worth. And whether he sells out arenas or not, I hope for David a solid career in the music industry so that generations to come are exposed to the “extraordinary gift and talent” of the Voice.
