Counting UP – Are We There Yet?

Posted by MT on Sunday, May 11, 2014

Fullscreen capture 5102014 114458 AM.bmp

Well, our countdown is finally over. David Archuleta is home! Yay!!

Now what?

Do any of you feel a bit lost or confused right now? I do. David’s home. He’s not in Chile anymore. But what does that mean in terms of being a fan for the moment?

When he was gone, the countdown made sense. We knew the date he left so we knew approximately when he’d get home. I don’t know about you, but I never really thought much farther than that while he was gone. I had a return date. That was all I needed. I knew he’d be back by the end of March and that was good enough for me. I settled in for the long haul and knew I’d have to find ways to amuse myself. No problem. I did. For two years.

But….he’s home now.  I don’t know what I was expecting but I don’t think this is it. I feel like I’m still waiting for him to get back. And I guess I am because, while we’re no longer waiting for a return, we’re still waiting for something else. Something more. The Music. Because to us, David = music.

Two things are making it difficult for me. First, I’m not really sure what I’m waiting for. There are so many variables, so many unknowns. Will David’s music be the same? Will it change? What type of music will he record? And in what language? Will he be heading to the Philippines? Will he do a concert here in the United States anytime soon? Will he vlog soon to introduce us to “the man he has become?” (I hope we can get reacquainted soon.)

Second, we don’t have a date. We’re no longer counting down, we’re counting up! But up to when? It’s the not knowing that makes it hard.

It’s like being on a road trip and not knowing your destination. If you know it, then you can anticipate if it’s going to be a long trip and be prepared to sit back and relax knowing you won’t be there for quite a while. When you know it’s going to be days in the car, you prepare for it.

A half hour trip is nothing. Just your driver’s license and the car will get you there. If you’re going to be driving for a really long time, you pack an ice chest, you bring iPods and iPads, you pack a bag and book a hotel. The problem is that (even though we don’t mind waiting) we have no idea where we’re going or how long we need to be prepared to wait.

I want him to take as long as he needs; forever if that’s what he needs for HIM.  But for ME, I hope I don’t have to wait that long.

*sigh* It’s the final countdown (or count UP). If only we had a clue.

Dear David,

I’m trying to be patient but can we get a hint? Pretty please? Should I pack an ice chest? Will I need my iPod and iPad?

Thanks,

MT

PS: If you tell me I need to pack a bag and book a hotel, I hope it’s for a concert. ;)

Saying Goodbye To Chile ~ David Archuleta

Posted by bebereader on Friday, February 21, 2014

PicsArt(5)

I’m convinced that time will pass more quickly if I would only stop watching the calendar and counting down the days until David comes home. It’s kind of like a pot of water that won’t boil if you keep watching it. Yet I still wonder how he might be feeling as he finishes up his time in Chile, his home for the last two years. The reality is that I cannot make any assumptions nor can I imagine how he feels about saying goodbye to Chile.

However, I do believe that you leave a little piece of yourself wherever you visit. Perhaps there will always be a part of him that will remain in Chile, the part that came to life with every gorgeous sunset he witnessed, every glance he took at the Andes Mountains, every bite he took of the fresh-baked pastries and with every person he encountered along his journey during his mission, some who may have very few physical possessions yet are full of joy and grace.

I couldn’t be happier that the wait is almost over but I realize that it’s sort of a goodbye for me, too. How is it possible to love a foreign country that I never visited except by doing research online to write articles for this site? For me, chili had always been a delicious beef dish, eaten during the winter. Chilly was always a reason to put on double layers of clothing.

Through David, the country, C H I L E came to life for me, instead of just being a speck on the world map. In addition to his beautiful voice, everlasting friendships and computer skills, I have David to thank for yet another thing, for opening my eyes to this beautiful country with its historical sites, extensive landscape of mountains, volcanoes, rainforests, glaciers, deserts, waterfalls, beaches, lakes, rivers, forests and islands.

It’s not just the countryside that I admire; it’s also the people, who are passionate and fun-loving. I’ve even become fond of their music after doing some research on what’s playing on their airwaves. I picked up a few songs for my Ipod; Alberto Plaza’s “Bandito”and “Amiga” by Alexander Acha. But that’s not all. I found a little Argentenian bakery not too far away that makes the most delicious empanadas. If I ever get the chance to visit South America, Chile would be my first stop.

Soon, David’s time spent in Chile will become part of his past. He will be busy with all sorts of plans for new music, touring, family, friends, catching up with fans and going out for Pad Thai. If he feels sad about saying goodbye to Chile and the people he met there, I hope he also feels content that he made a difference in their lives.  He has certainly made a difference in ours.

Desperate for David Archuleta

Posted by ronaleem on Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Fullscreen capture 1202014 91408555 PM

Although David was already on his mission and out of the public eye when I first became aware of the amazing person he is, I sympathize with fans who are desperate to have him back.

How does our desperation feel? I think David can tell us. The other morning as I was listening to my iPod, Desperate came up on the playlist. Although I had listened to this song many times, this was the first time I really heard it. And what I heard was incredible. David actually conveyed the feeling of desperation through his voice!

This is how I think he did it, but I want to mention two things before I get to David’s vocals. The first is the instrumental background: piano, throbbing drumbeat, and electronic sounds which are mostly loud, and frequently relentless and chaotic. This does not give David much opportunity for subtlety in dynamics or tempo.

Second is the lyrics. Desperate is not a profound song. The word “desperate” is used 13 times, 14 if you count the title. The chorus is repeated four times, leaving only three short sections of narrative to describe the subject’s emotional state. The first two sections convey his isolation and absolute despair; the third, his realization that he can change. Because David always strives for a positive message, despair actually turns to hope at the end of the second section when he sings, “It’s your life; it’s time you face it.” This line divides the song into two parts.

So, how does David do it? How does he express absolute despair, then the possibility of hope?

In the first part of the song, he keeps his voice in its lower register, which communicates a feeling of seriousness and heaviness, and contributes to the idea of despair. By staying in the lower register, his voice cannot soar into higher, brighter notes. Also, David clips the notes, and even exhales a little breath as he ends some of them. These clipped notes distinctly separate the words from one another, suggesting isolation, which in turn reinforces the sense of despair. The only time there is even a foreshadowing of hope is in the words “believin’” and “light” in the chorus. When David sings these words, he holds the notes instead of clipping them, thus entertaining the eventual possibility of hope replacing despair.

This possibility of hope is evident in the second part of the song. As David sings, “it’s time you face it,” he leaves his lower register and goes into his higher register. In addition, he holds the note on “it” instead of clipping it. In the lines, “You know that things have gotta change/ You can’t go back, you find a way/ And day by day, you start to come alive,” David’s voice steadily ascends the scale and his dynamics increase. When he sings “alive,” he holds this very high note for several beats and puts some runs into it as well, providing a bright sound. Ironically, “desperate” is sung ten times in this “hopeful” part of the song, but sung near or at the top of David’s range. In addition, he extends these repetitions of “desperate” by holding them for several beats. All of these vocal techniques contribute to the sense of despair, followed by the sense of hope, that David conveys through his interpretation of the song.

I always thought this song was a first-person account of desperation, that the lyrics were those of a person talking to himself. Thanks to some YouTube comments, I realized the lyrics could be addressed to a second person. I believe either interpretation holds up, although I prefer the first-person interpretation because it makes the intensity of the desperation more immediate and personal, which David definitely does.

Kirailah rolon:  Lol Why Would He Be Desperate He Is Hot

HeartSettoLove:  Because hot people have crap in their life happen too :p

And NarutoPHC replies to Kirailah with the third-person perspective:  Lol he is singing about the girl being desperate :P

I love becoming aware of aspects of David for the first time, as in this example of Desperate. I find it remarkable that a 17-year-old was able to convey feelings of desperation and hope so convincingly. David’s musical abilities and exceptional character continue to astound me.

And because I’m still learning about him and from him, I’m not utterly desperate to have him back yet. And no one else should be either, because David will be back soon!

Every year since this site began, we have celebrated David’s birthday.  We have celebrated birthdays 19, 20, 21, 22 and now 23.  That just makes my mind wobble.  How did this happen?  Maybe we were just having too much fun to notice how quickly the time has flown.

David Archuleta ~ Caught in His Web

Posted by Angelica on Sunday, October 13, 2013

webda1

ennui  (French) noun:  a feeling of listlessness and general dissatisfaction resulting from lack of activity or excitement.

This is what I’ve been feeling lately. I know a year and a half has passed. I know that means we have only six months left to wait. But I also know why this song by the Kinks has been playing over and over in my head lately.

There is a struggle going on in me. Sometimes I don’t play his music for days that turn into weeks. Sometimes I try to listen to other music for a while. I ended up placing my used copy of Sara Bareilles’ CD, The Blessed Unrest in the card I was mailing to him. It was a spur of the moment act. “Maybe you can listen to it on your P day,” I scrawled as I waited in line at the post office. The fact is, I’m tired. Tired of the same songs on the same albums of his. Tired of listening to anyone else because he has me ruined. So most of the time, I just don’t listen to anyone at all. Maybe I’m crazy, (pro-ba-bly) but I think I know something of what Teddy must have felt in the play Arsenic and Old Lace.

Reverend Harper: Have you ever tried to persuade him that he wasn’t Teddy Roosevelt?

Abby Brewster: Oh, no.

Martha Brewster: Oh, he’s so happy being Teddy Roosevelt.

Abby Brewster: Oh… Do you remember, Martha, once, a long time ago, we thought if he’d be George Washington, it might be a change for him, and we suggested it.

Martha Brewster: And do you know what happened? He just stayed under his bed for days and wouldn’t be anybody.

I just sit in my car in silence and don’t listen to anybody. It’s quite pleasant, really. I think a lot about stuff. Like a few days ago, I was sitting quietly in my car, waiting for the heavy wrought iron gate that sits at the entrance to our little lake community to slowly open. At that moment, I was wondering what the heck I was going to write about him next. It gets harder the longer he’s away. And then I saw them. A dozen spider webs had sprung up on the iron gate over night to adorn the bleak bars with a delicate, intricate beauty. I took out my phone and snapped a picture of it and drove on, thinking how like those webs his hold on us is. How we are caught, as securely as any prey was ever held. And how struggling only makes the cords of love grow tighter.

canvas444

Looking back, I realize why I did not see it coming. How was I to see those gently spinning diaphanous threads wafting toward me as I watched and listened each week in wide-eyed innocent wonder? What was there to fear while waiting on the world to change into imagining angels shopping around for smokey mountain memories along that long and winding road to heaven? By the time he strode out to Apologize it was too late. I was already tightly, hopelessly ensnared. With each concert that followed, each video uploaded, I became more captivated and more his captive.

In time he could walk away with confidence, knowing we were securely tethered until his return. When he does, the vibrations will be felt all over the web and across the wide world the net will tremble and our release will come. But we will never be free.
