Easter Reflections and a Question from David Archuleta

Posted by Angelica on Saturday, April 7, 2012

My mother and I shared a love of two things: books and flowers. Easter Sunday would find me at her door with a pot of Easter lilies and we would take time to admire them again, as we did every year, the same way. We would praise their pure whiteness and clean fragrance, like good expensive soap. My mother has been gone many years, but every spring when Easter lilies make their appearance, I think of her.

“How would you explain to someone if they asked “How do you find peace in a crazy world?”

David Archuleta, 4/5/12

On this Easter and every day, this is a good question that deserves reflection. What gives you peace? Amid all the chaos and calamities that may befall, what stills your soul? For me it is the fact that I know that my Redeemer lives, and because He lives, this life is not the end. One day I will walk through fields of Easter lilies as far as the eye can see and on the horizon will be my mother and others I have known and loved, beckoning me home.

“If Christ lived after death, so shall men, each one taking the place in the next world for which he is best fitted. Since love is as eternal as life, the message of the resurrection is the most comforting, the most glorifying ever given to man; for when death takes a loved one from us, we can look with assurance into the open grave and say, ‘He is not here,’ and ‘He will rise again’.”

President David O. McKay

“We are born for a higher destiny than that of earth. There is a realm where the rainbow never fades, where the stars will be spread before us like islands that slumber on the ocean, and where the beings that pass before us like shadows will stay in our presence forever.”

Edward Bulwer-Lytton

So, how do you find peace?

Anyone who doubts that forces greater than this world guide David’s destiny should consider this: what would the past 2 months have been like without this mini-series? On the heels of his mission announcement, he arrived in the Philippines in mid-January, setting off a daily avalanche of updates, mall appearances, photo shoots, interviews, and performances. Once rehearsal got under way, cue a plethora of pics and tweets from David, Kari, the cast, MyDearWriter and director, Mac Alejandre. I don’t think Nandito Ako was a coincidence that serendipitously came together at just the right time. I believe Somebody up there knew, not only that David needed this experience, but his fans needed the distraction during the run up to his mission departure. I believe Somebody prompted the events that unfolded and that we are the recipients of a multitude of tender mercies for standing by this young man these past four years.

Relates Perci Intalan, TV5’s, Creative and Entertainment head, “It started back in August 2011 over a casual conversation with Sony Music Philippines’ head honcho Narciso Chan, following David’s sold out concert in Manila. It was just an idea—a proposal out of the ordinary—but I told Ciso, ‘I’m serious’ if you are’,” Intalan recalled. “Before we knew it, we found ourselves negotiating with David’s lawyers in New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and Hong Kong; and by December, we were told he had accepted our offer.”

The Manila Times

Asked how much TV5 was paying David, Perci was mum, saying, “Mahal but it’s worth it.”

Fearing that David would be mobbed during the mostly outdoor shoot, TV5 offered to assign a few bodyguards to him but David declined.

“He arrived with only one companion,” added Perci. “Walang entourage.”

After the shoot, David said that he wouldn’t be doing any other showbiz-related projects since he would buckle down to his mission to serve God.

“I made the promise even before I decided to come to the Philippines,” assured David.

The Philippine Star

“He arrived with only one companion,” is not precisely accurate. Somebody else was with him. Somebody he made a promise to and when David gives his word, he keeps it. He’ll be back. He has other promises to keep.

Salamat po, Lord, for tender mercies and the promise of happy endings and new beginnings. Meanwhile, on with the show!

Nandito Ako and the Audaciousness of David Archuleta

Posted by MT on Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Author: MT

When David accepted the offer to do a mini-series in the Philippines, I think it was one of the best moves he ever made. Not just because I have enjoyed this mini-series more than I could have ever imagined, but for David himself. This project gave him the opportunity to stretch himself, and he didn’t waste it. In Nandito Ako, he was asked to portray a character that is similar to him in some ways but very different in others. And he did it. He gave a performance convincing enough that the line between David Archuleta and Josh Bradley began to blur. That is truly an amazing feat for a novice actor.

David had no real acting experience to speak of when he began this project and only one day of acting classes before arriving in the Philippines. Once he got there, he had to jump right in and begin working while getting an on the job crash course in acting. I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it was for him, and how daunting. He was expected to reply to other actors’ lines, with the proper emotion, while they were speaking another language. Normally, there is a two-way conversation. One actor shoots his or her lines and the other responds to what they are saying. But, David didn’t have the luxury of understanding the other half of his conversations. He could only go by what he was told others were saying and react to the emotion they portrayed. On top of that, he must have had to memorize the last few words of the other actors’ lines so he would know when to come in with his. Even a veteran actor would find that very challenging.  For someone who’s never acted in a drama of any kind before to be able to do it, and do it well, is quite an accomplishment.

In addition to the language barrier, David himself admitted that he has gone way outside of his comfort zone to do the scenes in this production since he’s not one who usually shows extreme emotion in public. And that’s exactly what the scenes called for. We have seen him angry, defensive, pleading, fighting, crying, and even a little sassy and snarky. And we’ve seen him do romantic scenes.

Most of us don’t stop to think that the two involved are not alone and there is probably no romantic song playing in the background while he does the scene. Instead, there are lights, microphones, cameras, cables lying on the ground, a whole crew watching, and a director critiquing his every move. This shy young man is expected to do a romantic scene with an entourage watching, possibly having to do it over and over until the director gets the shot he wants.

And yet, he was wonderful! No one could have asked for more. If David can pull this off under these difficult circumstances, I think he has great potential for future acting projects if he decides that’s what he wants to do. Is he an award-winning actor? No, not yet.  But with some lessons and a little more experience, who knows?

I’ve always said that there is no end to what David is capable of in regards to artistic talent but I was usually referring to music. Since watching Nandito Ako, I have revised that opinion. I now sincerely believe that David can do anything he sets his mind to.

It’s staggering to watch him learn and adapt so quickly, with only three weeks from the beginning to the end of this project. And I haven’t even begun to talk about how in the midst of it all, he was doing mall appearances, interviews, performances, dealing with new contract negotiations for the Bench endorsement and the album, photo shoots, commercials, music videos, and recording! How did he not go insane from the pace of it all?

Benchtm

To say that what he accomplished in the Philippines in just one month is amazing just isn’t enough. And he’s only twenty one years old! Can you even imagine what the future might hold?

David Archuleta is Josh Bradley (almost)

Posted by bebereader on Friday, March 9, 2012

credit JoAnn Banaga – from singing, to drama, to action…Falling for Josh Bradley

Fifteen episodes down and ten to go. We are now past the midpoint of the “Nandito Ako” miniseries. We’ve seen David stretch and grow right before our eyes as he takes on new challenges way out of his comfort zone in his newest endeavor.  The man’s got acting chops; he’s a natural down to his comedic timing. Who woulda thought? *Raises hand* Me! With an expressive face like his and a deep, introspective nature, he has all the attributes necessary to succeed in acting.

The story seems appropriate for someone like David who is family-oriented. It revolves around three main characters who come together from different backgrounds. Anya is raised by a loving single parent but lives an impoverished life. Holly, on the other hand, has all the riches anyone could want except that of her mother’s love. Josh has a successful career but is haunted by the memory of a fire where he allegedly lost his Mother. And three are caught in a love triangle that has me hooked.

Like a good novel that I can’t put down, the characters are captivating and have grown on me. I don’t want this fast-moving story to end. I hope to see some heart-wrenching scenes between Josh and his Mom when they find each other. And I hope his plans aren’t destroyed by his vicious uncle. I love how Josh talks about his parents, “When my Mom & Dad fell in love, it was…magical, like in fairy tales. Do you believe in magic, Anya?” David’s, I mean Josh’s  flirty “You’re looking at me.“ sassy line he spoke on the bus to Anya is now a classic!  Josh is as almost as irresistible as David Archuleta. Almost. ;)

I wonder if Aladdin will be the one to put the pieces of the puzzle together since he saw Josh’s watch strap?

In any case, MyDearWriter’s latest tweet has me **spazzing** for more Nandito Ako:

@MyDearWriter
LOL! All the things you’ve seen so far are nothing compared to the ultimate Romantic Bradley in action.

Yikes!

Dear DA From Bluesky

Posted by djafan on Monday, March 5, 2012

“I said he’s kind of like me. No two people are the same, and Josh is not me. He’s Josh Bradley.”

(Caveat: I am using this statement merely as an example on its own, with no reference to or implication concerning the words that may have prompted it.  ^_^)

Dear DA, Welcome to stardom:

You have to deal with people who care about you in varying degrees wondering who you are, discussing your motives, your dreams, your decisions, your future. Now you have cute Josh Bradley to cope with! THAT is a testimony to your talent. When we see you as Josh (or Josh as you?), you know that you have done a good job, that you succeeded in your effort to communicate Josh Bradley to us and bring the story alive. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. I agree with Holly: You are amazing. (She got to say it for all of us. ^_^)

About the downside: well….. I guess it is no different from family: I worry, guess, suppose and project with those I love. And it doesn’t change a thing. They just go ahead and live their lives without checking with me first to see how much better my ideas are. How grateful I am for that!

As for you (and Josh… and all the DA’s I may have concocted in my own brain…) I think you were born with and have continued to develop a great sense of self, which only you can define. I am even more grateful for this! It means I will continue to be surprised with you just as I am with my own family. You just have a really big family to contend with. Thank you for loving us and letting us love you – no matter how imperfectly.

And I will say that I am more impressed each day with your efforts and also those of many of the other actors involved. For me, it would seem a bit like doing a movie voice-over (like Lion King) to have to respond and interact with a language not your own. Thank you so much for taking this on and trying your wings. May you find them ever lifted by the strength of the power that holds you up and carries you onward.

A Picture Inspires a Thousand Words ~ David Archuleta

Posted by Angelica on Friday, February 24, 2012

I find this ex-treeeemly interesting. You would have to know the small town of Vernal, Utah, to really know why I’m amazed. It’s famous for it’s Dinosaur quarry, but that’s about it (well, and now Betty’s Cafe). It’s about a 3-4 hr. drive from SLC on the central-eastern side of the state. I just really wonder what David was doing out there in this small rural, farming town. They have a LDS Temple there that is a beautiful one, perhaps that’s why he went out. Because, then later, he tweeted about being in the ortho’s office and watching a movie on the ceiling screen. He just keeps his motor humming, on that fine tuned and well oiled machine, all the time. :)

“Betty’s Cafe head chef Lynda Oaks held up a menu that former American Idol contestant and soon-to-be missionary David Archuleta signed on his stop in Vernal on Thursday. A server at the cafe Dave Everett said he was impressed by Archuleta, and said he doesn’t see too many celebrities in the cafe. Regular customer of Betty’s Nancy Jensen Birchell said she spoke with the singer during breakfast and he admitted that he had visited the Vernal Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his visit. Birchell said he was dressed in Sunday best and very nonchalant. “Who knew you’d see David Archuleta in Betty’s,” Birchell said. The pop singer later sent a message to his more than 2,200,000 followers Facebook about the Roosevelt and Duchesne restaurant China Star. Archuleta announced in December that he would serve a two-year proselytizing mission for the LDS Church.”

Tawna

Tawna:

That picutre (in the link) of him at the table, with the sun all hazy around him, there – in the middle of nowhere – … it has a surreal feeling to it. Especially if you know how off the beaten track this is. Waaaaayyyyy out there in the middle of going to or from somewhere else.

He just sits there. Eating. Nonchalantly, as they say.

I don’t know of any picture or setting I have seen recently that so captures the elusive essence of DA like this one does.

Bluesky

He blows me away with all that he does. Grateful for his music and example. :D

MunkFOD

I find it so interesting that he is there alone and yet not alone. He is so enveloped in the light of goodness that it makes my heart pound and stand still at the same time. The photo is of value. It is so David — in this world, but not of this world.

Tawna

For me, it is like the out-of-focus image that I see here, matches with crystal clarity his image in my heart. He is, and always will be, just David.

Bluesky

That is the quality that I love most about him.

As I said above: I don’t know of any picture or setting I have seen recently that so captures the elusive essence of DA like this one somehow does.

“Beam me up, Scotty.”

Somehow this silhouette, in silence, without seeing the good-looks, without hearing the voice or being (benignly) beguiled by his open manner and ready smile, speaks volumes — If by “screaming” you mean it seems loud, I agree. Loud has never been so quiet.

Meditation on David:
I remember one time there was a picture of DA in a cross legged sitting pose that spurred us on to many a discussion about his qualities of spirituality. But this unassuming image seems to capture a feeling, an essence, a tide of color and light that quietly engulfs me.

Bluesky

Bluesky, yes loud, demanding my attention, bringing, no pulling me into his space, yes engulfing me. You’re good.

And that picture is good. And David is one of a kind.

Djafan

That pic is so out of this world. I was just thinking, if we didn’t know it was David in that pic, would we know it was him? Of course we would. He has the most strikingly beautiful and recognizable silhouette I’ve ever seen.

Bebereader

Check out the artist Jan Vermeer. This looks like one of his. (Except for the ketchup)

Poof

Bluesky, Thank you for being in my David world. This:
Somehow this silhouette, in silence, without seeing the good-looks, without hearing the voice or being (benignly) beguiled by his open manner and ready smile, speaks volumes — If by “screaming” you mean it seems loud, I agree. Loud has never been so quiet.
He knows he is never alone even though he is by himself. This picture speaks so much about him. For some reason, I am comforted by it. I’m not sad. I don’t feel like he’s about to be lonely. I don’t feel like crying looking at it. I’m gonna be OK. He’s gonna be OK. Phew!

Angelofdja

This picture had me gulping in air, and waiting to exhale. It is as astonishingly beautiful as the man himself.

Skydancer

The photograph, so soft and understated, reveals rather than conceals what lies within…a soul of pure beauty, brilliance and light. He gets up on a Thursday morning and drives to a Temple well off the beaten path. It is not the first time he has done this. For David, it is just another day in paradise.

David Archuleta Launches New Clothing and Hair Product Lines!

Posted by bebereader on Friday, February 17, 2012

credit @PinoyArchies

Singer/songwriter, best-selling Author, Humanitarian and Actor, David Archuleta can now add Endorser for clothing and hair products line to his resume.  Just a few hours ago at a musical fashion show at The Trinoma Activity Center in The Philippines, David launched both a new clothing line for Bench Clothing and a new hair products line for Fix Professional Hair Styling Products.

A huge thank you to Norms, who was able to make a Ustream available for the fans back home.  After an impressive slide show on a large screen, in which David modeled Bench fashions, he sang five songs, “Nandito Ako”, “Touch My Hand”, the “Good Place/Let It Be” medley, “Crush” and then “A Thousand Miles” after the fans chanted “one more song!”.

credit @lorms

David carried the entire concert portion of the show himself and the emotional connection he has with the fans was palpable.  There even seemed to be an element of  farewell and appreciation, in my humble opinion.  Maybe you’ll agree if we’re lucky enough to see the performances on youtube.

~David Archuleta ~ A Work Of Art – Inside & Out

A Masterpiece

By MT

When God created men
They were not all the same.
Each from a different palette
So many of them came

But every now and then
A special one is made,
Painted with touches of color
From the beauty that God gave.

From the dewy green of grass
He’s given him his eyes.
With the color of cherry blossoms
He painted lips to smile.

From the softly falling snow
He found the color for his teeth.
And for his skin, a special treat,
The dew and color of peach.

And from the blackness of the night
His locks of hair are hewn.
And then he gave him breath
So with golden voice he’d croon.

His heart was made with special care
From the garden of the rose.
In deepest red he fashioned it
With love and care and hope.

When giving him his inner light,
He reached into the sun.
He knew this one would shine so bright
He’d be known by everyone.

As he gazed upon this creature,
God knew he’d cast a spell.
He’d made this one a masterpiece.
He’d used his palette well.

Stay tuned this week for the final episode of: On the Set of the Bold and  Beautiful, Young at Heart and Still Restless, All My Chillin’ Fans of Nandito Ako.
