Historical Colonial Theater

Colonial - Deep Love

Built by C.A. Spath, cashier of the Farmers and Merchants Bank; Dr. C.M. Cline, physician and S.K. Mittry, contractor: the Colonial Theater opened on November 10, 1919, at a cost of just over $175,000. It boasted one of the largest stages in the Intermountain West, a modern ramp (in lieu of stairs) to the balcony, a ventilation system, which circulated fresh air every five minutes and superb acoustics. Traveling vaudeville acts and minstrels entertained, as well as musical acts like John Phillips Sousa.

In 1929, it was renamed the Paramount Theater and began showing moving pictures. Sadly, it fell into disrepair in the late 1980’s and was closed.

In 1994, Dick Clayton, Sr. and his son Steve donated the theater to the Idaho Falls Arts Council, a private nonprofit organization.

The Idaho Falls Arts Council launched a capital campaign, known as the Phantom project. An anonymous donor challenged the community to raise half of the total cost and the Phantom would donate the remaining. The successful $4.2 million dollar campaign renovated the Colonial Theater and the adjacent buildings into a beautiful visual and performing arts center for the region.

Renamed for the Phantom donors, Miles and Virginia Willard, who also chaired the campaign, the Willard Arts Center now contains a visual arts building with galleries, classrooms, artist studios, meeting spaces for events, and much more.

Today the 988 seat Colonial Theater is one of three large theaters of historical significance which still remain in Idaho. In 2014 alone, the Colonial Theater played host to over 25,000 patrons.

I’m still in awe of the way “Don’t Run Away” smashed it’s way to the top of my listening list since Sat. night. I looked at the lady that was standing next to me taking pictures also and just dropped my jaw! It was a ‘Wow, what is happening here!’ moment. I just stood and shivered when he ended it.

I was so intent in watching his moves with ‘Nunca Pense’ that I really didn’t realize when he ended. :) My Gosh! He put the moves, the swag, and miles on that stage. He hasn’t forgotten how to work the crowd. A little more stage time and he’ll have that fire in his soul, and feet, burning up the stage in a 3-alarm fire!!!

When he did a perfect slide into the high notes on “Mirrors” it was chilling (the good, blueberry ice kind). That’s a fast moving song with a lot of words to fit into a single breath, but he mastered it. He just smooth moved his way into ownership of this song.

And, of course, ‘Glorious’ was glorious. Stephanie Mabey had no idea, when she wrote the song, that somewhere in the future a man would come along and make her song come alive. It’s happened, and we are all witnesses of it!

David had the crowd in control and barely breathing. This man, in finding himself, has created a new crowd of followers. There was no screaming and hollering during his songs, afterwards was a different story. It’s what we’ve dreamed of, and discussed in the past. Let us hear ‘the voice’ and feel the music while he is performing. In slowing himself down and nurturing his needs and his talent, he’s gained the real respect that he deserves. I just can’t get over what I witnessed Saturday night. It was so beautiful.

Yeah, it was worth the squished in the crowd moments…. you have to understand where I’m coming from on that. At my tallest, I’m under 5 foot tall, and large, fast moving, crowds can cause some real apprehensive moments. There are times when I just won’t deal with it. But, then there are those times when I just suck it up and go with the flow. Saturday was one of those times. :D

David Achuleta Begins Motivational Tour in Mid East for Troops With Dan Clark, Jason Hewlett, and Dean Kaelin

Posted by djafan on Wednesday, July 9, 2014

eveningLRG TroopsCredit AFE

They have arrived! Unfortunately, their luggage and Dean’s keyboard did not arrive with them. We have reports on the ground from both Dean Kaelin and Jason Hewlett that they have all checked into a hotel in Bahrain and are being treated well. Heat is almost 100 at 9:30 in the evening! Landed in Bahrain instead of Afghanistan. Jason writes there may be some changes on the schedule but we will be updated as things happen. I will keep this a fluid post for now to add more to it as time goes by and we will post updates and pics/vids in comments.

Just to clarify, David said they will be doing shows for the Air Force in his vlog and some thought that meant only performing on Air Force bases. According to the Fact Sheet on AFE, since,

1997: The U.S. Air Force was assigned the Executive Agent for providing celebrity and non-celebrity programs to troops serving overseas, creating the jointly-manned office, Armed Forces Entertainment.

The Air Force is in charge of coordinating entertainment for all 4 branches. So, keeping them all in our hearts and prayers, especially our brave soldiers…Let the show Begin!

David Archuleta ~ Invisible Children 25 Hours Of Silence Event

Posted by djafan on Monday, April 25, 2011

Invisible Children

How it Started

In the spring of 2003, three young filmmakers traveled to Africa in search of a story. What started out as a filmmaking adventure transformed into much more when these boys from Southern California discovered a tragedy that disgusted and inspired them, a tragedy where children are both the weapons and the victims.

After returning to the States, they created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers.

The film was originally shown to friends and family, but has now been seen by millions of people. The overwhelming response has been, “How can I help?” To answer this question, the non-profit Invisible Children, Inc. was created, giving compassionate individuals an effective way to respond to the situation.

Read the rest of the story here

The boys filming in 2004

Before becoming a celebrity, David Archuleta was a supporter of Invisible Children. His involvement  introduced me to this cause. I remember the leather bracelet he wore on the Bonnie Hunt show, the Invisible Children t-shirt Dawn gave him that he wore on several occasions and his willingness to share with anyone who asked what they stood for.

‘Break the Silence’ Details from INVISIBLE CHILDREN on Vimeo.

Event Details:

After 25 years of war waged by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army, Invisible Children is getting loud… by shutting up. But after the silence ends at 8:00 PM on April 25th (in every time zone), it’s going to get even louder.

Break the Silence is happening in 18 cities across the U.S and will mark the end of the Invisible Children community’s 25 hours of silence for 25.

Break the Silence will unleash the voices of the thousands who are going silent and who have raised at least $25 to fund The Protection Plan – Invisible Children’s work to protect innocent civilians from LRA violence. (More information can be found by clicking here: Protection Plan.)

We’ll end this with two quick acronyms: RSVP ASAP. The cities will fill up, so now that you’ve raised your money and committed to 25 hours of silence, get your name on this list and we’ll see you at one of these cities.

Schedule of the night’s events:

April 25th, 2011

6:30PM – Doors open

7:30PM – 30 Minutes of Silence Begins

7:55PM – Break the Silence Video Begins

8:00PM – Silence is Broken

8-9PM – Celebration with new IC Media, Ugandan speaker, IC Roadies and musical performances

This message from Lauren Bailey (Invisible Children Team) via AFS

Come Monday—you name the price $$ for the event, all goes to ending a 25 year long war.

I just flew in to sunny Nashville, the birds are chirping and sky a’ clear blue. While taking in the scenery I hopped over to Allen Arena to check out the set-up for Monday’s Nashville 25: Break the Silence Event and got PUMPED.

This event is happening in 3 days, and it’s going to be amazing, I promise.

I want all of you to be able to come and experience Evelyn (our Ugandan speaker), performances from David Archuleta & Landon Pigg, as well as IC’s newest media…released yesterday.

But I know some of you are a little concerned about the raising $25 part. So, here’s the deal. Those of you who raised the $25—we love you. Thank you for your commitment, support and trust. You WILL be honored at this event.

However, I know a lot of you are college students with minimal incomes and maybe some with debt. We still want you to come be part of this monumental evening.

So, all of that is to say: You’re invited, don’t freak out about the $25. It’s suggested, but your attendance is more important.

YOU CAN STILL COME IF YOU HAVEN’T RAISED $25.

We will be taking donations at the door. If you haven’t RSVP’d then you can just drop your money in the donations bucket, and enter. You name the price ($5, $25, $100, you decide).

Just come, soak in the bliss of people coming together for a just an honorable cause—plus some sweet music and media.

However, do us a favor and stay silent. We’re breaking the silence at 8PM—please don’t be that kid who tries to do so beforehand. Thanks and can’t wait to see you there!

-Lauren + the Invisible Children Crew

David has been tweeting about his participation and support for Invisible Children.  There are 18 cities who will be hosting this event and the concerts to break the silence tonight at 8pm Central Time.  Three of those cities will be live streaming and one of those is Nashville where David is scheduled to perform.

This from PRNewswire:

David Archuleta “Breaks the Silence” with Invisible Children in Nashville, TN

100,000 young people have pledged 25 hours of silence to conclude Invisible Children’s national ’25’ campaign; the organization is hosting events in 18 cities across the country where partnering musical artists will “break the silence”

SAN DIEGO, April 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Invisible Children is excited to announce David Archuleta as the most recently added headliner for their event: Break the Silence, which is the end of their campaign ’25’ that launched earlier this year. The former American Idol contestant, one of the youngest ever, will take the stage at Lipscomb University’s Allen arena in Nashville, TN, on Monday, April 25th, to raise awareness and funds to end Africa’s longest running war.
