  • David Archuleta – His Taste in Music – Published September 02, 2010 by Pamela Pike

    Promoting All Music

Arguing about taste is as fundamental as having it in the first place. We take for granted that different people enjoy different things–and that others feel as confident in their judgments as we do in ours.

Our choices in books, music, art, and design go to the core of who we are. Taste can offer us a doorway into people’s lives.

Even as a child, David Archuleta’s appetite for exploring music was insatiable beginning with Jazz from his father’s influence and salsa from his mother. Like many who seek out a wide range of art at a young age, David continued to be artistically open-minded. To this day he still seeks out new music.

David is high in openness, the characteristic of creative, curious, and imaginative people, constantly sampling new music. Openness correlates to a great range of tastes. These individuals have a greater conception of what makes great music.

He listens to other people’s music and pays attention to what is playing such as Oldies, Pop, Rock, and gives each song a chance. He goes to concerts and checks out opening acts that may not be well-known and recommends to his fans listening to their music.

His recommendation of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Misty” from his latest blog shows great taste not only in songs but great singers as well. Being a great singer involves the ability to stay on pitch and convey emotion, the message of the song. They also should be as good live as they are recorded. Hearing a performer in concert tells the tale. The voice should be distinctly recognizable.

Ella could not only make a song come alive, but she brought an element of sweetness to her songs. She was able to make you feel that you were right there with her in the emotion of the song.

David has that ability, he understands music, he is young but his voice sounds experienced. He has a smile that will knock your socks off and draws you right into the emotions he is emitting. He also has the ability to enjoy himself when he performs and allows others to share in that pleasure.

Music is his life, commitment, work, discipline, fun, sorrowful, joyful – it’s just all things in one, it’s the rhythm of life. Music is the link to his dreams. Music is also the thing that brings David the closest to God.

His pen has been a fountain of joyful songs and I am longing to hear the results of all his hard work and dedication on October 5, 2010.

  • Why the hype? 28-year-old male: Archuleta craze not irrational

  • TONY POTTER apotter@uvsj.com

    Posted: Monday, June 21, 2010 10:57 pm | Updated: 2:03 am, Tue Jun 22, 2010.

I'm a 28-year-old male. My musical tastes include Keane, U2, They Might Be Giants, Regina Spektor and Broadway soundtracks. I am not what I would have called a typical David Archuleta fan. And even though I have interviewed him twice, and met him twice more, I had never, until Saturday night, heard a single song sung by him.

I interview a lot of artists and bands, and most of these interviews come with the opportunity to attend their respective concerts, take photos for the paper, etc. I rarely attend these events, mostly due to time. However, I so enjoyed my interactions with Archuleta this past week that I decided to take my wife to his concert.

"Why did I do this?" I asked myself as I sat through a particularly not enjoyable pre-show. When the screaming started (true to Archuleta's own words, the loudest he's ever heard) I was even more outside of my comfort zone. Thankfully, I was "taking pictures for the paper," which made my front and center position less awkward and noticeable.

But what was my surprise when this "American Idol" star, an accolade I often scoff at, opened with what I can only describe as a fun, truly enjoyable song. And lo, the second song was even better. My expectations of weak vocals and cheesy, teen-pop lyrics fled, and I sat back to enjoy the show.

But more impressive to me than his performance were the traits he exhibited in our interaction during the week, the very traits that prompted me to attend his concert.

Trait No. 1: He's a regular, even humble, kid.

When speaking of the release of his new book, Archuleta had no assumption of his own great wisdom or experience. Instead, he said the publishers approached him, so he thought maybe, since he has been a teenager, his experience with trials and overcoming might speak to other teenagers and help them out. While I saw for a fact that many nonteenagers were buying his book, Archuleta held no illusions for himself of trying to be profound to an older audience.

Trait No. 2: He's loyal to his fans. When I asked the manager at Deseret Book how long Archuleta would be signing books last Thursday, he told me it started at 6 p.m.

"When does it end?" I asked.

"When all the books are signed," he replied.

The manager went on to say that Archuleta personalizes each book he signs, something most artists don't take the time to do. From the look of things, Archuleta has a strong enough fan base to get away with just signing books from 6 to 8 p.m. So why go the extra mile? I guess he really appreciates those that have made him who he is today, and hasn't forgotten it.

Trait No. 3: It turns out he really can sing.

What's the lesson learned here? I guess it's that hordes of young ladies and women falling over the pop icon with dreamy eyes and a magical voice can't always be counted on to be irrational and lacking in real musical inclinations. It turns out, every once in a while, the hype is dead on.

  • In Pictures: 11 Teen Celebrity Entrepreneurs

Life as a teenage celebrity has its perks–hobnobbing with Hollywood royalty, traveling the world and free clothes, to name a few. But for those who strive for more, just singing or acting won’t do it. They have to be die-hard self-promoters with albums, theater gigs, TV shows, movies, endorsements and charity work. In short, they have to be brand-building entrepreneurs. Here are 11 who are pulling it off.

    David Archuleta, 18

    Musician, actor, author

Defeated in the seventh season of American Idol by David Cook, Archuleta went on to release a self-titled album on Jive records that reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts, and a Christmas album in October 2009. He even customized a Christmas singing game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. He has played more than 100 live shows since Idol. This year he released an autobiography, Chords of Strength, and last year toured with fellow teen star Demi Lovato. He's also guest-starred on Nickelodeon's iCarly and Disney's Hannah Montana.

    Hi Jane!

I couldn’t resist. The powers that be need to take notice…I like the Queen and Carrie…but not up to par with the Archuleta.

I just played all of these and tried to be objective but there is not one bad performance here. Not one! When David sings a patriotic song he gives respect to the song and to our country. He continues to fill me with so much pride.

    Thanks for posting these, dja!

To be fair, they both had some good moments. But David is superb from start to finish, always perfect pitch and never searches for the note and is just glorious. Hate to say it but Carrie had me shrinking away from the screen with my hands over my ears at the ending.

Thank you DJAFAN… wow.. all in one place. I can’t wait to listen to every single one of these again! I have loved Patriotic music ever since I saw my giant-of-a-man Daddy cry in church on a Sunday during America the Beautiful. For many years I taped the SSB performances from the SuperBowl on one tape, just because I love to hear people sing it so much. I think David’s Utah Jazz performance is my favorite because it was the first time I had ever heard a singer hit the high note- crescendo? on “WAVE.” first and then again on “FREE” It’s so amazing to me that with as many talents that have sung that song, they can all still creatively find ways to make it ‘their own.” When David sings Patriotic songs, the songs are not about DAVID but about the country. I can’t recall one other singer who has sung these songs with as much reverence, and as little ego , as David, and I think that alone puts his performances in a class by themselves.

  8. Angelica said

    Emi,

You put into words what I have thought about David’s performances of these patriotic songs that, aside from his amazing vocals, makes them so special. You can’t help feel that it’s not about him showcasing himself or grandstanding. It’s about the songs and what they mean and represent in blood and tears. Here is an Eagle Scout singing about America and it is obvious in every phrase and powerful note that he loves this country very much.

I love this post. Thank you, listening to David was just what I needed. After listening over again to Carrie and Queen Latifah it makes me realize just how amazingly beautiful and heartfelt Davids versions of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America are. Normally I think Carrie is great but. . . Yikes! Ok, i will try to stay positive. Once again, David’s performances are simply breathtaking.

  10. rapture said

Love the post – if not just to have all these here and now to revel in.

Dja, How did you know that we would all be craving this just right now. Were you watching the same mediocre performance this evening? Ha ha!

Angelica What a photo! It’s so sharp, it’s hard to believe it’s candid! Just beautiful. And – Congratulations on the victory!

I did like Queen Latifah’s performance with the children singing at the end – pretty nice twist. Carrie, however…yikes!

Off topic, but did you guys notice this:

In the Duet #1 above left (where Jordin’s in the red dress)there’s a time when David is whaling along with his eyes closed and doesn’t see Jordin closing in on him. When he opens his eyes, he’s a bit startled for a split second. It’s at 2:46 on the video above. It seemed more evident earlier on – perhaps on a different version. In any event, it’s pretty cute and the simultaneous howl, “Nooooooo Aaaaair!” that follows is just beyond amazing.

    Posting prayer for SF…

    Dear lord,

    Please take care of David.
Watch over him, protect him from all harm.
Cloak him with your love and give him the strength to endure all that is thrown in his path.
Give David the courage and guidance to say no to those who ask for more than he can reasonably give.
Surround David with loving and supportive people who love him unconditionally as we, his devoted Archangels do.
Separate David from those who have agendas other than for his well being.
Give him rest when he feels weary.
Give him stamina to sustain his hectic pace.
Give him assurance when he feels doubt.
Give him joy when he feels sad and never allow David to feel alone or lonely.
Give us the wisdom to always do right by David.
Help us support David so that it’s always in his best interest.
CLOAK DAVID IN YOUR PROTECTIVE ARMS always and please keep David and his voice healthy & strong as he fulfills his Destiny which was written in his Book of Life before he was born.
Though we may be unworthy Lord, we humbly pray. Amen

David, have a good & restful night’s sleep with sweet & happy dreams. Thank you for all you do and for who you are. Keep with you all our love, support & prayers always. Contigo siempre! We will be with you always! TAKE CARE!

And SF hoping and praying all is well with you…God Bless you.

    Spamming here…

That same magical moment – the simultaneous howl, “Noooooooooo!” is at 3:05 in Duet #2 (above left). Jordin taps David and then they let loose.

Oh what I wouldn’t give to witness that moment live – maybe even standing right on stage with them – wearing my invisibility cloak, naturally!

So now I’ve got to watch this one a few more times and put myself (and abrra’s wand) to bed!

  14. djafan said

So well put and I agree 100%.

That is my absolute favorite moment from that performance. I have to keep rewinding. The way their voices blend perfectly on that wail…I think what they actually sing together is “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!” To die for ear candy.

My thoughts below come after listening to David sing in all of the great videos Djafan has given to us.

I am certain that David is trying to teach me to be more patient as the days continue without word of his plans and rightfully so as he did have us completely spoiled.

But I am having to have additional patience waiting on the world to fully recognize and appreciate the value of the purity and perfection of his voice. What I see from all of the ‘talent’ that is presented to us is that the world is totally immersed in flamboyant fanfare (remember Pink upsidedown at the grammys, ribbons for clothes, with water running all over the place?).

I even find it difficult to read about David being compared to anyone (of the male species) right now as it seems quite out of place…I am going to continue to work on my patience…work on my patience!! Come on world…change.

Thanks for making this easy on us dja! Carrie has a heck of a voice, and I am sure she was very nervous, but nooobody does it like he does!

Emi, and he did that Jazz game after an exhaustive day in SLC, and exhaustive week!

Hey Rapture, don’t ya just love it anytime David can just let her rip!

Angelica, glad you heard “Ahhhh” in Duet 2. Thought I was hearing things. Duet #1 sounds like “Nooooo”, but I reeeealy like the “Ahhhhhh!”

Awww – really cool idea dja.
Remember back in September when he was getting ready to sing America the Beautiful? He was contemplating the meaning of the lyrics & feeling very patriotic. These aren’t just songs to him.

Still loving this “Tell me how ya gonna be without meeeeeee”.

  21. Pabuckie said

Haha – and duet #2 perhaps Jordin taps him at 3:05 so as not to startle him like she did in duet #1. Gave him a warning this time! And boy are they SPOT ON at 3:07!!

dja- Thanks for bringing these all together. Great idea!

David is THE VOICE to give our beautiful SSB and GBA the beauty and reverence they deserve. I believe David gives these songs the full appreciation that they deserve, the way he sings the words makes you think about what they are really saying and how we feel about this country. Just my two cents.

Me, too!! Some screencaps over at FOD. Not too clear but nice moves David. Don’t know how I missed these. Had to go to bottom of current page at FOD to “previous entries” on the left side at the bottom.

You think there will be a look, a phrase, a move, or a note from “No Air” we haven’t all memorized by the time the next tour comes? We have disected his clothes, his physique, his belt, his charm or lack of, his swagger, his dancing, his smile, his head bobbying, his puffy cheek, his tone, timbre, pitch and pronunciation of words and wails. I’m back & I’ve missed sooooo much this last week! My home computer which is used solely by my son was infected by a bad virus a few weeks ago so he started using my laptop when I was at work and any other time I was not on it myself. Anyway, I started having problems with my laptop as well until I couldn’t access the Internet at all. It seems to be OK now, though I still can’t access some sites. I wasn’t even and still am not getting any tweets on my phone which would have at least let me know a little about what was going on. ;-)

Then one of our cats, Bernie got sick and has been in the hospital since last Wednesday morning. :( He has a urinary blockage caused by an infection & has been catheterized while being treated with antibiotics. He will most likely need surgery when the infection has cleared. Without the surgery, the blockage will recur and will eventually be fatal. I wanted to make sure if he has the surgery, that he will have no more problems. The Vet assures me my kitty will be fine after the surgery. We’ve had Bernie since he was a few weeks old. He’s never been outside and has never wanted to go outside. He’s almost eight now and is not a typical cat. He has a personality and loves to be cuddled and petted. We were trying to ready ourselves to let him go to keep him from suffering, but he’s been sedated and is fairly comfortable. At least no longer in pain. Our other cat Joe, has been moping and missing Bernie. This has not been a good week at all. And now here in my city, it’s snowing and we are expecting about 6″ of the white stuff.

Wasn’t David in Florida? And now he’s in LA? I hope he has some warm clothing cause the high temps this week will only be in the 60′s, kinda cool for LA isn’t it? Looks like he had a productive day today. I sure have missed him. **sigh**

    Good night all, for David..

TAKE CARE!

Thank you Bebe & Djafan! I saw where you posted the prayer in my absence. :)

Hey SF! Good to see you back! Sorry to hear about all your grief with Bernie, but glad the vet says he’ll be okay :)

Computer malfunctions seem to be on the rise. Hope you’re in good shape now.
