Return of the Soul Man from Utah?

I didn’t watch Star Search when David was on the show and only recently sat down and took a closer look at these performances of a much younger David. I find something in them I hope David will consider revisiting and reprising one day. There is a soulful, groovin, yearnin, on his knees begging, cause he’s a prisoner of love kind of vibe going on. No doubt he was just singing words without much meaning for him and going through the motions then. No one would take a twelve year old singing those kinds of songs seriously. It was safe and precociously cute. Now that he’s older and wiser, would he feel comfortable singing this way again? Perhaps now he is more conscious of what is proper and what could be considered too emotionally raw for a young man coming of age. I don’t know if he would touch lyrics referring to “pleasure” or ” the fire’s getting stronger.” But I would dearly love to see him bring his much more evolved talent and performance skills back into this genre again. We have seen glimpses of it surface in “Works for Me”, Reno and “My Hands.” Can you imagine what a mature David could do with this type of material now? Back then…no sexual charisimo at all, of course. Now? Have mercy he would kick major assumptions of what folks are dealing with when they are dealing with David Archuleta fo sho! I’m just masochistic enough to hope the next album he’s working on will show a reemergence of this soulful, baby-don’t-ya-do-me-no-wrong-cause-I-need-ya-too-bad kind of material. Not sure our hearts could stand David live on tour doing this… the growls alone could take you out of this world. But what a way to go! I’m willing to pack the portable defibrillator and O2 tank and take the risk. Who’s with me?

I caught bits and pieces of the grammy’s last night and tweets about it.. That’s entertainment I guess, but not music for me.

Dang, Angelica! You did it again!! I’m so totally in agreement with you about David reviving some soul work. He’s shown us little snippets of his ‘mature’ capabilities (Reno–heart stopping). Count me in, and I’ll bring my own defib and O2 tank.
I’m thinking I’m glad that I didn’t watch the Grammy’s last night. In reading the reviews and tweets, I’m glad that didn’t waste my time.

SB, Love that Steve Colbert quote. Link? I would love to see the day when singers have to compete on real ability and talent, not on some Gypsy Rose Lee gimic. What a bulesque show it has become. I didn’t watch but I’ve seen it all before and it matches the descriptions I’ve read from those who did. Is it asking too much that a singer actually be able to sing?

You are preaching to the choir Angelica! Would love to see the return of soulful David. Not that we haven’t seen glimmers of it, but I want to see him bust it wide open.
The cool thing about Works For Me in Reno is that David’s soulful intro. was completely spontaneous. They were having some technical difficulties (with someone’s guitar or the sound system, not sure which) so the whole band was improvising that intro. It just shows David’s skill and innate musicality that he was able to come up with such a groovy beginning, just spur of the moment.

Hoping and praying for the return of that soulful sound we know David can do at a drop of a dime. We’ve all seen it, some like you and beebee have done beautiful mgr’s of them. He once said that he was to loud when he was younger, maybe so but with all the learning and practice he’s done I think we are going to all melt with this next record. Several of the songwriters he’s been writing with scream soul to me.

I got David’s tweet on my vibrating phone hidden in my pocket about him not having time to eat breakfast and he was hungry! So I sat there for a full ten minutes so upset because he was hungry! Now that is nuts! Then he tweets how great & comfy the plane ride was and he got to sleep. I sat there thinking..yes, but did you eat, David? You have to eat breakfast! Then I just smiled cause he was able to sleep, then frowned cause he had to sit in “coach”. How the heck did he manage to sleep? The plane must have been fully booked flight. He should never have to sit in coach! Then he landed safely and I was happy…See? I spent almost the day thinking about David! Oh My Gosh! Good thing for the tweets though since it’s the ONLY access I have to David while I’m at work.
I hope David has a great time with Jordin doing what he loves to do..Charity work, especially if it involves children.

The above ’6′ cd suggestions are fabulous. I use ‘Silent Night’ and a few others from his cd for getting to sleep rather quickly…A 100% vote for a Lullaby CD because he has the vocal powers to help you get to sleep when he wants to…Every night I have my ipod and choice of sleeping songs by David…How many singers have that ability? Not one person at the Grammys except perhaps Andrea…Then there would just be David and Andrea, the best of the best.
